Note
How did Kay and Victoria attend Dartmouth if the college was male only then? Dartmouth’s sister school would’ve been Mount Holyoke which was female only
I honestly have no idea. I went off on the idea since Mario Puzo wrote Kay attended Dartmouth with Michael so I assumed women could attend at the time but like... 💀 Wow. I mean, ah well! Who cares?! Fiction is fiction. 😂 That's a stupid rule anyway... 🙄🙄🙄 The girlies have attended!!

Meet the Fossil Detectives in the Basement
by Suzanne Mills and Albert Kollar
Gray metal storage cabinets march in rows across the concrete floor. The collection space has no windows and there is a constant hissing sound from the overhead air ducts. No matter, the staff is looking for clues of the geologic and paleontological past, or History of the Earth, through the vast collection of fossil invertebrates. The staff and volunteers of the Section of Invertebrate Paleontology (IP) is tasked to reorganize, preserve, and curate fossils through the leadership of the Collection Manager Albert Kollar.
Tumblr media
Collection Assistant Kevin Love at the doors of the Invertebrate Paleontology section.
On any given workday, you’ll find us hefting drawers full of fossil-bearing rocks and playing specimen-box Tetris to make fossils fit in the available cabinet space. We examine century-old inventory books, search out (usually Google) maps to find absconded valuables (historical fossil sites), and decipher written scripts in unfamiliar French and German for valuable geologic data.
Long-term volunteers in IP include Rich Fedosick, a researcher assisting in the project to document the Carnegie building stones; John Harper, an expert on fossil snails taxonomy, Roman Kyshakevych, who is deciphering the famous Coppi collection from Italy; Tamra Schiappa, a paleontologist at Slippery Rock University who is updating fossil cephalopod identifications; and Vicky Sowinski, who performs collection support. Student researchers include collection assistant and graphic artist Kay Hughes, a 2021 Mount Holyoke College graduate who coauthored four peer-reviewed scientific publications produced by IP; and collection assistant Will Vincentt, who researched two Bayet collections, the Hunsruck Slate of Germany and Lyme Regis of England. Tara Pallas-Sheetz, a part-time assistant, has worked on various projects over the years.
Hear from some of our newest staff and summer volunteers in their own words below.

Lizzie Begley with large fossil corals
Name: Lizzie Begley
About me: B.A. Anthropology Penn State 2021; masters candidate in Museum Studies and Non-profit Management certification in progress at Johns Hopkins University
Why IP: Working “behind the scenes” in IP has helped me develop a better sense of what it looks like to work in a museum such as the Carnegie. As an aspiring museum professional, experience behind gallery floors is invaluable as I work to find my place in the field. For this experience I couldn’t be more grateful and, honestly, couldn’t be having more fun!
Tumblr media
Katie Golden with fossil ammonites
Name: Katie Golden
About me: B.S. Biology, Juniata College 2023 (expected)
Why IP: When I was in preschool, I told people I wanted to be a paleontologist when I grew up. Here in IP, I like exploring a part of the museum that most people don’t get to see. I particularly enjoy puzzle-piecing together fossils that need repair. The intricate ammonites, trilobites, and insects preserved in amber are especially beautiful. My favorite fossil organism is Anomalocaris.
Tumblr media
Tori Gouza with fossil corals
Name: Tori Gouza
About me: B.A. History and Anthropology, University of Pittsburgh 2023 (expected)
Why IP: I love working in IP. It is so exciting to be able to interact with others in the section and to learn what projects they are currently working on. Albert Kollar has encouraged not only discussion but also collaboration. It is great to converse with others who are passionate about their work.
Tumblr media
Kevin Love enters data about a fossil eurypterid
Name: Kevin Love
About me: IP Collection Assistant; B.S. Geology and Ecology & Evolution summa cum laude, University of Pittsburgh 2021
Why IP: I like solving puzzles at work. I find invertebrate fossils aesthetically appealing, but the main reason I like this job is that I get to understand little enigmas from Earth’s past. I like solving historical questions and compiling more information about fossils in the collection.
Tumblr media
Suzanne Mills with fossil trilobite Isotelus gigas
Name: Suzanne Mills
About me: IP Collection Assistant, Professional Geologist, mom
Why IP: Every day is different when you work with a collection of 800,000 specimens. I may come across a 100-million-year-old ammonite sparkling with crystals inside, or a drawer full of trilobites acquired by the museum in 1903, when Andrew Carnegie was alive. I love that my work requires me to learn more about fossils which are beautiful, historical, and scientifically significant.
Tumblr media
Ellis Peet with fossil crinoids
Name: Ellis Peet
About me: B.S. Environmental Geoscience with Geology concentration, Slippery Rock University 2021
Why IP: The management and staff of IP are smart, kind, personable, and they take paleontology seriously. I also like the environment at IP because it smells like a library and limestone dust, which reminds me of the geology department at Slippery Rock.
Tumblr media
Joann Wilson with fossil trilobite Paradoxides spinosus from the Baron de Bayet collection
Name: Joann Wilson
About me: Interpreter for the Department of Education, Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Why IP: Fossils inspire awe.  I enjoy unravelling the stories behind the individuals that discovered, studied and collected these breathtaking specimens.
Suzanne Mills is a Collection Assistant and Albert Kollar is Collections Manager in the Section of Invertebrate Paleontology at Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Museum employees are encouraged to blog about their unique experiences and knowledge gained from working at the museum.

SPRINGFIELD — More than 10,000 people attended Red Sox Winter Weekend and the Hoophall Classic in Greater Springfield in January, and their economic impact on the region was significant, according to the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (GSCVB), which calculated that approximately $7 million was injected into the local economy as a result of these events.
Economic impact is calculated using a tourism-industry tool, inputting spending figures in categories like the number of attendees, room nights sold, venue rental, and the cost of food and beverages during the period.
“Hoophall Classic and Red Sox Winter Weekend are high-profile events that put Western Mass. on the map,” GSCVB President Mary Kay Wydra said. “We are delighted to welcome these visitors and show them all that Western Mass. has to offer, and we know that many of these sports fans will come back and visit us again.”
Visitor rooms were booked in downtown Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke, and West Springfield. Red Sox Winter Weekend occupied space at the MassMutual Center and MGM Springfield, while the Hoophall Classic was held on the grounds of nearby Springfield College.

Puritan’s Obsession with Superstitions
Puritans believed that God was present everywhere in the world and they needed to strive for the grace of God. Spiritual warfare presented itself daily, so they needed to determine which they were facing, God or the Devil. They also relied on almanacs to conduct their everyday life; when to plant, slaughter animals, the best days to build, etc., yet colonists demanded they include “Anatomy” and zodiac signs associated with astrology. Comets and earthquakes were believed to be indications of an angry God. Puritan Ministers played on those fears to get colonists to repent and turn from their wicked ways before destruction came. Another belief was that stars, planets, and eclipses had a direct influence on their lives. The religious duties of the Puritans combined with their superstitious reliance on Almanac’s, astronomy and astrology made it difficult to separate their faith from natural events.
Tumblr media
Picture 1:  John Winthrop aboard the Arabella 1630 www.gerard-tondu.blogspot.com/2014/11
John Winthrop stated in his famous essay aboard the Arabella creating a covenant with God, “to establish a truly Christian community, in which wealthy were to show charity and avoid exploiting their neighbors while the poor were to work diligently. If they abide by this covenant, God will make them an example with the world—a “city upon a hill.” But if they broke the covenant, the entire community would feel God’s wrath.” (Winthrop 1630). What separated a Puritan from other religions during Colonial America? Puritans believed in reform, not separation from the Church of England. Everything in life was predestined. They also believed that one could not choose salvation, that was God’s doing. Just believing there is a God isn’t enough and just practicing the sacraments wasn’t sufficient to be saved. The English Literatures of America, 1500-1800, states, “Sanctification is evidence of salvation, but does not cause it.” (p. 434). Kay Kizer at the University of Notre Dame said it best when she wrote, “While repression was not encouraged in principle, it was evident in their actions. God could forgive anything, but man could forgive only by seeing a change in behavior. Actions spoke louder than words, so actions had to be constantly controlled.” (Puritans). The Puritan colonists were constantly looking to be found pleasing in God’s eyes, ultimately to receive salvation. One of the ways to accomplish this was to know their enemy and the many faces the Devil presents in the world. Sun Tzu wrote In The Art of War, “It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.” (ch. III). Puritan’s needed to be strong in their faith to know whom they are fighting or they will eventually sub come to the wiles of the Devil. Birth defects, sickness, even unexpected death was considered signs God cursed a family or individual.

  Picture 2:    Edward Holyoke's 1742 Almanac http://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/drs:47006029$13i
Puritan’s relied daily on the Almanac which served serval purposes. One being for the astronomical information, for example, eclipses of the moon and sun, and moon phases. Astrological signs were included, “Anatomy” with zodiac signs marking each part of the body and how it relates. With the astrology information, Puritan’s knew the best days each month to plant their fields and gardens, when to harvest and build, even slaughtering animals. The almanacs were also used as diaries to log daily events, travels, even household spending. These were printed yearly, primarily in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Almanacs became reliant on by the Puritan’s that they “outsold the Bible” according to Jon Butler’s Journal Magic, Astrology, and the Early American Religious Heritage, 1600-1760. (p. 328).
Tumblr media
Picture 3:    Comets www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/cph.3b36267
According to Edward Holyoke’s 1743 Almanac, comets were believed to be “planets at one time that had a rich variety of necessities for animal life. As a punishment for their guilt, the planet fell like a blazing star.” (Holyoke, 1743 Almanac). Puritan ministers like Increase Mather who incorporated comets into his sermons as “God’s warning to a sinful earth that transgressors should repent their sins or prepare for disaster.” (Yeomans, p. 419). To capitalize on the saint’s fears that comets were a precursor to a natural disaster and “the comet’s tail to arrows drawn in the bow of an avenging God.” (Yeomans, p. 419). Picture 3 gives us a visual of what the Comets looked like to the colonists.  The website differencebetween.com defines astronomy as “a scientific study of the motion of celestial bodies.” Astrology as the “study of the movement of celestial bodies, astrology is a set of beliefs and thoughts that movement of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, etc. have an effect on an individual’s personality and also have a bearing on his present and future.” (Difference Between website).
Tumblr media
Picture 4: Astronomical Characters  https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/drs:45561503$58i
Picture 4 is a page from the journal of an unknown student of John Winthrop’s at Harvard College (now Harvard University). In this picture, it shows us the symbols of astronomy and the zodiac signs that are found in the almanacs. Astronomy and astrology are very different yet intertwined at times, especially in the Almanacs. So why was astronomy accepted and astrology not? Puritan ministers were also scientists who studied the celestial movements, it was science based and rejected astrology because it was used to predict horoscopes, a person’s future, specifically fortune telling, which went against the word of God. Increase Mather, a Puritan minister, believed “that the stars, planets, and comets all had an influence on man’s life was undeniable” and went on to condemned William Lilly, an astrologer, by writing, “a blind but insolent Buzzard of our own Nation.” (Yeomans, p. 420-421). In the journal Astrology in Colonial America: An Extended Query it states that Mather had little patience with astrology when he wrote: “If men did with understanding read the Scriptures more, they would mind Judicial Astrologers less.” (Stahlman, p. 558-559). Picture 5 is another page from the same student of Winthrop’s showing us a Solar and Lunar projection. This student was meticulous with details in his drawing.
Tumblr media
 Picture 5: Solar & Lunar Projection  https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/drs:45561503$54i
Tumblr media
Picture 6: The Solar System www.archive.org/stream/treatiseonastron00phil#page/n7/mode/2up
Picture 6 is a map of the Solar System with the orbit of a comet around Mercury. I’m not sure of the year for this particular map. However, if you look closely, there are only six planets, Jupiter, Earth, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Saturn, which I found interesting.
Puritan’s had to be mindful of their spiritual faith yet was not able to separate it from natural events. In my research, I have reached the conclusion that Puritan’s justified some of their superstitions through moral reasoning and rejected others. Jon Butler agreed when he wrote, “English society simply did not clearly divorce Christianity from magic, astrology, and divination. They adopted eclectic beliefs about superhuman powers and beings in their quest to understand the world and master their lives.” (p. 323).

HOLYOKE — Holyoke Mall marks its 40th anniversary today, July 5. Since opening in 1979, Holyoke Mall has established itself as the largest shopping destination in Western Mass., currently offering more than 150 dining, entertainment, and retail destinations.
Throughout the last 40 years, Pyramid Management Group has continued to adapt, evolve, and thrive in an ever-changing market. In 1995, the shopping center expanded, adding an additional 500,000 square feet, and welcomed big-box tenants such as Best Buy and Target. Traditionally located in free-standing or strip-mall locations, the addition of these anchor tenants began an industry-wide trend.
Over the years, Holyoke Mall has welcomed Massachusetts’ first Hobby Lobby, and the Xfinity Store, Toys R Us, and Christmas Tree Shops’ first in-mall locations. The center also continues to attract and expand its dining and entertainment options, most recently adding 110 Grill, Flight Fit N Fun, Round1 Bowling & Amusement, and Sumo Japanese Steakhouse.
“We are happy to grow and change with our shoppers. Forty years is a testament of our success and dedication to providing the highest quality and in-demand dining, entertainment, and retail venues,” said General Manager, Bill Rogalski. “We have more to come and are excited for our next 40 years.”
Other stores celebrating 40 years at Holyoke Mall include American Eagle, Foot Locker, Gap, GNC, JCPenney, Kay Jewelers, Motherhood Maternity, and the Greek Place.

HOLYOKE — #MeToo has galvanized a national reckoning about sexual harassment — but girls have been downplayed in the dialogue. “Speaking Out: For Women and Girls,” an event presented by Girls Inc. of Holyoke on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at the Delaney House, is doing its part to change the exchange.
The need is dramatic. Sexual harassment doesn’t begin in the workplace, but starts much earlier: studies show that seven of 10 girls are harassed before they leave high school, and one in four girls experiences sexual abuse and assault in childhood.
This is why “#GirlsToo: Respect Starts Young” inspired the night’s theme. #GirlsToo is a new viral media campaign launched by the national Girls Inc. organization that adds girls’ voices to this essential conversation.
“After witnessing a global year of women being brave enough to speak out, I think our ‘Speaking Out’ event is more timely than ever,” said Debra Vega, the event’s chair. “It’s just one of the ways we’ll continue striving to cultivate a world where women and girls can feel they can be heard.”
The moderator of “Speaking Out: For Women and Girls” is Victoria Ann Rodriguez, a litigation assistant at MassMutual and committee member of Springfield’s Puerto Rican Parade. The three featured local authors are Latoya Bosworth, Magdalena Gómez, and Crystal Senter-Brown. They have long advocated for women and girls and promise to present a lively, thought-provoking evening.
Bosworth is an educator, author, motivational speaker, self-esteem expert, and consultant. At age 21, she dubbed herself “Brenda’s Child,” in honor of her late mother, Brenda Kay. In her adult years, Bosworth has learned to reframe the tragedies and issues of her childhood through seeking out mentors, using writing as an outlet, and giving back. She has a Ph.D. in social services, and has consulted with the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Youth Services. Her latest book is The Right Amount of Sunshine: Cultivating Little Girls into Young Ladies.
Gómez is a teaching artist, performer, playwright, motivational speaker, workshop facilitator, and author. She is a recipient of the 2018 New England Public Radio Arts and Humanities Award. Her plays, performance poems, and monologues have been performed everywhere from UMass to Off-Broadway to the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater to Teatro Vida, Springfield’s first Latina theater, which she founded. She is also a commentator on NEPR, the author of poetry collections such as Shameless Woman, and the co-editor of an acclaimed anthology on bullying.
Senter-Brown is the director of Employer Relations at Bay Path University, an author, and a justice of the peace. She has written seven books for children and adults, led writing workshops in the community, spoken at local schools, and taught in the Women as Empowered Leaders and Learners program at Bay Path. One of her novels, The Rhythm in Blue, was adapted into an award-winning feature film. She was named a BusinessWest Difference Maker in 2018.
“Speaking Out: For Women and Girls” takes place from 5-7 p.m. Event tickets are $100 each and include an open bar and hearty appetizers. To purchase tickets, visit bit.ly/SpeakingOut2019. The authors’ books will be on sale at the event. All proceeds will benefit Girls Inc. of Holyoke.

HOLYOKE — The Greater Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau (GSCVB) and the Economic Development Council (EDC) of Western Massachusetts announced ‘West Mass’ as the region’s new branding identity Tuesday night at Open Square in Holyoke, the Republican reported.
The EDC and GSCVB spent $80,000 from member businesses on the rebranding effort. The goal was to replace Pioneer Valley, a name widely used for the past century, but one that doesn’t resonate with people from outside the region, said Mary Kay Wydra, president of the GSCVB.
The groups hired Cubic Creative, an Oklahoma-based rebranding agency, which met with area businesses, government officials, and residents, in addition to creating a survey that drew 300 responses.
