MASSIVE FARMER'S PROTESTS OUTSIDE INDIAN CAPITAL AND ACROSS THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY
📹 Massive protests are confronted with teargas, armed police with rubber bullets and drones as thousands of farmers, mostly in India's northern Punjab region, protest on Tuesday demanding a Minimum Support Price or MSP for all crops to raise farmer's income.
Dozens of Farmer's unions participated in the strikes, calling for a "Delhi Chalo" or March to Delhi.
Police in and around the capital have erected barriers on highways surrounding New Delhi, and have begun firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the approaching farmers.
Tractors, along with thousands of farm hands, are seen in footage nearing the outskirts of New Delhi, in the northern Haryana state, being confronted by officers with gas and smoke bombs, including some dropped from buzzing drones overhead.
Authorities have shut down Internet services in some areas where protestors approach, and have erected concrete roadblocks and barriers, while local officials have banned public gatherings and are deploying extra security personnel.
Officials in New Delhi emphasized that sufficient police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to all entry points to the city.
Farmers are demanding dozens of changes, including a new MSP or floor price for crops to increase and guarantee farmer income, as well as a full debit waiver, according to local union officials.
Political officials in New Delhi say they're open to talks, with Agriculture Minister, Arjun Munda telling reporters on Tuesday that the Federal government already is "bound to protect the interest of farmers."
"Farmers also need to understand that inconvenience shouldn’t be caused to the public,” Minister Munda said, adding the government was always ready for negotiations with the Farmer's unions.
“We are ready to do everything possible to find a solution to this issue,” he said.

Minimum Support Price (MSP)
Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a key component of India's agricultural policy, designed to protect farmers' interests by ensuring a minimum price for their produce. During the Green Revolution, this policy was implemented in 1966–1967 with the intention of protecting farmers from market price swings. MSP is essential for resolving issues with food security and stabilizing the agricultural economy.
What is MSP?
MSP is the minimum price at which the government agrees to buy specific crops from farmers. Even if market prices drop below the cost of production, it acts as a safety net to guarantee that farmers get paid fairly for their produce. Before the planting season, the government releases MSPs for particular crops, enabling farmers to choose crops skillfully.
Tumblr media
How is MSP Determined?
The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) recommends MSP based on several factors:
Cost of Production (CoP): Includes expenses for inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and labor.
Market Trends: Considers demand, supply, and price fluctuations.
Profit Margin: MSP ensures a margin of at least 50% above production costs, following the Swaminathan Committee’s recommendations.
Consumer Impact: Balances farmer interests with food inflation control.
Objectives of MSP
Protect Farmers’ Income: MSP shields farmers from distress caused by price crashes.
Encourage Crop Production: It motivates farmers to grow essential crops, ensuring food security.
Price Stabilization: MSP helps maintain stable agricultural prices, reducing economic shocks.
Support for Rural Economy: It contributes to poverty alleviation and economic development in rural areas.
Benefits of MSP
Income Assurance: MSP provides farmers with a predictable income, encouraging investment in farming.
Market Protection: It prevents exploitation by middlemen during periods of surplus production.
Boosting Production: Guaranteed prices motivate farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices, enhancing productivity.
Rural Development: Stable farm income drives consumption and economic activity in rural areas.
Challenges of MSP
Despite its advantages, MSP faces criticism and challenges:
Limited Awareness: Many farmers, especially smallholders, are unaware of MSP or unable to access its benefits.
Skewed Procurement: MSP primarily benefits rice and wheat growers, leading to regional and crop imbalances.
Environmental Impact: Overemphasis on water-intensive crops like paddy strains water resources.
Fiscal Burden: Large-scale procurement and storage impose financial pressure on the government.
Market Distortions: High MSP can lead to food inflation, affecting consumers.
Tumblr media
Way Forward
Expand Coverage: Include more crops in MSP procurement to support diverse farming practices.
Strengthen Infrastructure: Develop better storage, transport, and cold-chain systems.
Promote Awareness: Educate farmers about MSP benefits and procedures.
Digital Platforms: Implement online systems for direct farmer-government transactions to eliminate middlemen.
Environmental Sustainability: Encourage MSP for eco-friendly and climate-resilient crops.
Conclusion
MSP is a crucial tool for helping farmers, maintaining agricultural market stability, and guaranteeing food security. Millions of farmers have profited from it, but changes are required to make it more efficient, inclusive, and environmentally friendly. MSP can continue to boost the agricultural economy and improve farmers' livelihoods in the years to come by tackling current issues.

GOT ACCEPTED INTO A LOCAL CON.. BABY'S FIRST ART MARKET
#Boothing#Going to have a new tag now.. What a beautiful day.#Excuse the tone switch. The description is us being blurry but I (Chara) am truly the one in front.#Wow! What joy. =) Haha. Patron of the Arts do not worry about us not having inventory yet...#But I am very excited to wake up tomorrow to pay for the booth fee and finally get our gears running for our inventory and displays.#This is what we have been doing our Pride animals for. It has always been for a dream like this:#Which is to say‚ selling them physically at an art market.#Oh. Oh my goodness. The Wheelchair sticker will be real.. The Pride Animals will be real everyone.#Not just a redbubble idea. An actual design that has coloured borders or borderless designs because WE want them to.#Sitting there with other artists and making friends. Accepting tips and making jokes with everyone.#Joy joy joy.#We plan on turning the whole thing into a small documentary for our personal self that we will upload to Youtube after PotA is over.#If anyone is interested in our future highs and lows...#The funny thing is.. I wonder how everyone will react to our art style changing every now and then in our booth. Haha!#“Why is your art style for this print different from this other print”#Well you see.. I have something called.. Dissociative Identity Disorder my friend.#Oh also! We are going to be selling Palestine related stickers for people to buy in a PWYW system with a minimum price.#So it will be our way of giving as well as other people can knowingly support the people in Gaza in an easier way.#We haven't posted anything related to this yet because we want to finish the entire set. We have ideas in mind since we wanted to avoid#using text/words and instead use symbols like animals and plants or objects.#Haha our catalogue will hopefully be varied enough for people.#I wonder if it will be too diverse... We also worry about the opposite problem where people might not 'follow us' because our style changes#too much to 'follow for'... hm.. Well that is a problem for them‚ not me‚ I should say. =)#From Chara#Mod Stuff

plenty of people have said this better than I will but I love it (read: it's very annoying) when people suggest turning a craft hobby into a side business. There is no succinct way to explain to non-crafters, in a casual conversation, that for high-quality handmade goods, the amount of physical labor required already puts the cost of those goods far beyond what regular people would be willing or able to pay for those items. the cost of materials alone is sometimes more than what people would be willing to pay. not to mention the labor required to market yourself, especially if it's a fairly niche thing.
I told a friend about the horseshoe crab backpack I'm making and he made this comment about turning it into a side business. and. I know it's intended to be encouraging and supportive, but like.
Tumblr media
Including materials, and given a very optimistic assumption that I will finish this project in another ~3 hours of work,
Charging at the federal minimum hourly wage of $7.25 for my labor, this backpack would cost approximately $203.
Charging at the somewhat more "acceptable" $15 hourly wage, it would cost $395.
Charging at $25/hr for a wage that actually values my labor beyond simple survival, it would cost $615 or more.
I'm not going to finish it in another 3 hours. And I am undeniably an amateur– the finished product isn't going to be perfect and crisp the way something "should" be to cost that much, so it won't be "worth" the amount it's technically worth.
Projects like this that I do for fun I am absolutely willing to replicate for close friends at a significantly lower price as a "gift" (asking for cost of materials and/or only a partial cost of labor). But there's no reasonable way to actually monetize a hobby like this.
Anyway, look at my crab.

Are banks operational in Gaza? And how do we deal with cash flow?
The targeting of the occupation against the banking and financial systems in the Gaza Strip, the destruction of dozens of exchange offices and ATMs, the prohibition of financial transfers to Gazans, and the absence of regulatory oversight from the relevant authorities have led to chaos and the dominance of banks and exchange offices, resulting in an increase in the financial discount as commissions on the amounts that Palestinians there seek to obtain in cash.
Tumblr media
So as not to get away from the main topic of this post, let's focus on answering these two questions directly.
Yes and no.
How is that, Mahmoud? Explain.
Yes, all banks in Gaza have shut down their headquarters since the war broke out, and it's not possible to contact their employees to complete certain transactions.
But banks operate digitally through some official apps, mainly Bank of Palestine since its headquarters is in Ramallah and not Gaza, so it operates normally.
So you're saying the banks are closed does that mean ATMs are, too? How do you withdraw your money?
Through traders in Gaza.
How does that work?
Let's say Mahmoud needs to withdraw 100 dollars in cash. He goes to one of the known traders in Gaza and says "I need 100 dollars in cash, how much is commission?"
How much is commission?
Commission differs from one trader to another. It comes down to their personal desire. For example on the day of writing this post, dated 4/12/2024, commission for cash withdrawal has reached 30% of the amount withdrawn.
In other words, if I had 100 dollars in my bank account, I need to pay 30 dollars to the trader, and receive 70 dollars in cash. So, the price of converting bank credit to cash is 30% of that amount.
Meaning if I had 1000 dollars, I receive 700 dollars instead. Imagine that level of injustice, despair, and despotism.
When you receive money from outside of Palestine, the trader also keeps 30%.
But there's nothing we can do. We have no choice but to accept these terms, just to be able to eat and drink and go on with our daily needs.
On the other hand, prices of goods are astronomical. I am not exaggerating when I say that if a person in Gaza has unlimited money it still wouldn't be enough.
The smallest of families need 100 dollars a day just to get by with thebare minimum.
Help us to provide food for today and feed our children in the midst of this famine.
Only $350 left to reach the short-term goal of $22,000
