Brain Curd #193
Brain Curds are lightly edited flash fiction - practically first drafts - posted daily (haven't missed one yet!) and sometimes written with the express intention of being terrible… but, you know, in an endearing way. Please like and reblog if you enjoy - the notes keep me going!
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr!
“Ladies and gentlemen…” Frank was focused intently on his hands and the desk. “Welcome back to The Frank Program.”
Big Mike had slept in the studio the night before - ostensibly. But he didn’t really get any rest. There were dark bags under his eyes. “Frankie… you’re rolling your own cigarettes now?”
Frank cleared his throat. “Ah… yeah, that’s right.”
He took the ‘cigarette’ and put it in his mouth to light it. He inhaled deeply, held it for a moment, and coughed. In fact, he coughed for a full five minutes before he was able to catch his breath and continue the show.
“Right, uh… our guest today is none other than…” He checked his notes. “Esteemed astrophysician, Dr. Terry Constantine Vernon. Welcome to the show, sir.”
“Thanks.”
Frank took another hit, and handled it much better this time. His eyes were a bloodshot and he yawned, reclining in his chair and stretching his muscles. He said nothing. Dr. Vernon said nothing. Mike broke the silence.
“Dr. Vernon, is there evidence to suggest that there is life after death?”
“No.”
“What about reincarnation?”
“Also no.”
The clock continued ticking, almost seeming to get louder with each tock. Frank seemed oblivious to the fact that he was recording a podcast, and Vernon sat there, just waiting for someone to ask him a question that wasn’t yes or no. Mike began to sweat. He wasn’t used to this length of dead air in his profession. By his count it had been thirty seconds now since any of them said something.
He leaned over to speak to Frank. “Hey buddy, do you have any questions prepared?”
“Eh, who needs that? I usually just ask whatever I’m wonderin’ about.”
“I tried that, Frankie, it’s not working.”
“Then wonder about something else and leave me be.”
“What’s gotten into you, man? Is this about your kid?”
“You don’t know what the fuck you’re talkin’ about, Mike. Go interview the damn guest.”
Mike shrugged and leaned back into his seat. “Uh, alright… are soulmates a thing?”
Dr. Vernon shook his head.
“You gotta answer out loud. This is an audio podcast.”
“No.”
“What makes you say that?”
“There is no scientific evidence to suggest soulmates - or souls - exist. Pair bonding is a chemical reaction in the brain. Ever heard of oxytocin?”
“Yeah,” Frank said. “I got prescribed some of that after my back surgery.”
Mike glared at him. “Not oxycontin, you idiot.”
Frank rolled his eyes.
“Oxytocin,” Vernon explained, “is often called the ‘love chemical’. That’s absurd of course. That’s quite a complicated function of the brain. But it has been found to correlate with such feelings, notably with romantic couples and between parents and children.”
Frank burst out of his chair and leaned on the table. “Doc, are you saying all I gotta do to get my boy back is dope him up with this oxy whatever?”
“No. I am in no way saying or endorsing that.”
Mike raised his hand. “Would it work on my wife?”
“Absolutely not.”
Frank shook his head. “What good are you, then, anyhow?”
“Why doesn’t one of you ask me something about astrophysics?”
Mike and Frank looked at each other and silently agreed.
“Nah.” Frank said, then took another hit. “This…” He coughed a few times. “This has been… has been The Frank Program.” He started giggling. “Isn’t it funny that I always say the same thing, Mikey? Thanks for letting me be Frank… with you.” Frank’s lower lip quivered. Daryl came up with that…”

Summary of the Emerald Ring in this au:
Mr.Vernon : Evil, he feels like the rest of the ring turned on him because one of them told the authorities that he started the fire. He was sent to juvie but got out early because of “good behavior”. He’s a really good actor and manipulator. Isn’t married to the Other Mr.Vernon in this au, but he does have a huge crush on him and send him expensive gifts from an “anonymous admirer”
Lyle: is alive and helps Mr.Vernon, having become a famous magician and having more influence in the magical community. While Mr.Vernon handles things from behind the scenes Lyle is the face of the operation meeting eager up and comers and indoctrinating them. He’s mainly with Mr.Vernon because he believes family should stick together no matter the circumstances.
Mike: Still neutral in this au but instead of being obsessed with not involving himself and keeping himself and his daughter far away from magic he’s the opposite. He encourages Emily to learn magic and learns some tricks of his own. He also thinks that the rest of the Emerald Ring can come together again, and they just need to talk and everything can be like old times. He also instills this value in Emily.
Sandra: Is the one in love with Kalagan in this au, she finds out the twin situation and falls in love with Kincaid. He actually isn’t interested in her because he realizes he loved the idea of her and would rather be friends. She’s also the closest to Mike out of all the others because she agrees with him wanting for things to go back how they were. Having a career as a fortune teller for a traveling circus.
Bob: He runs a magic themed zoo and volunteers at dog shelters. His zoo is a few towns away. He’s still in contact with Mike and Sandra.
Kilory: Is the good guy this time! He goes against Mr.Vernon not believing his “redemption” after juvie. Turns out he’s right and he starts the organization that Mr.Vernon started in the original books. He’s like a bit more morally questionable Mr.Vernon in this au, doing good thing for good reason, but with the occasional “for the greater good” decisions. Travels a lot and realizes his parents were actually bad people.
Kincaid: Is still pretending to be the old bellhop but this time it’s to keep an eye out on Mr.Vernon who has stayed in Mineral Falls. Kind of wants to join Mr.Vernon’s side low-key but that’s because he feels lost now that Kilory isn’t as around, he’s not use to being his own person and kind of just wants someone who will tell him what to do.

So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)
In today's review, I find that an axe can stop true love. As I attempt a #positive review of So I Married an Axe Murderer. #MikeMyers #NancyTravis #AnthonyLaPaglia #AmandaPlummer #MichaelRichards #BrendaFricker #MattDoherty #CharlesGrodin #PhilHartman
Dating is hard, which you can forget if you’re already in a relationship. Two unknown strangers with their little worlds come clashing together, their hopes, dreams, and secrets are going to have to cohabit to ensure bliss, if all goes well, the rewards can be worth it. In 1993, after Wayne’s World redefined the world, Mike Myers showed us what romantic life is like when your partner has a deadly…

Shrek 2 (2004)
Tumblr media
If there's a kind of movie that's rarer than a good sequel, it's a good sequel to a comedy. That alone makes Shrek 2 noteworthy. Better looking and funnier than the first, this follow-up is a must-see.
Newlyweds Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) return from their honeymoon to find an invitation from Fiona’s parents, who live in the kingdom of Far Far Away. As Shrek predicted, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews) are shocked by their green-skinned son-in-law and their daughter’s appearance as an ogress. With the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) under the assumption that her son, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), would be marrying Fiona and King Harold none too pleased with the situation, an assassin (Antonio Banderas) is sent to deal with Shrek and his friend Donkey (Eddie Murphy).
Visually, Shrek 2 blows Shrek out of the water. It's a little shocking, actually. The human characters, in particular, look much better but it's more than just that. Peel your eyes away from the foreground and you’ll see many subtle jokes thrown in the background: funny book titles, posters on the walls, and more. There’s always something on-screen to keep you laughing.
Over and over, Shrek 2 displays perfect comedic timing. A joke will lead into another and then come back with a snap that catches you off-guard. There are so many great, quotable, memorable moments you’d be tempted to list them all but then you’d be simply writing a synopsis of the whole movie. These are not cheap, throwaway gags either. They tell you about the relationship between Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and her parents. They serve double duty by advancing the story and the same can be said about the songs. The soundtrack is no mere collection of top-10 hits; they have been carefully selected to establish the mood, make you laugh and emphasize what you see on-screen. You can feel and hear the enthusiasm the cast and crew had for Shrek 2 in every frame.
It's now time to address the film’s one flaw: the pop culture references. Spider-Man, The Fellowship of the Ring, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, Garfield, Cops… the list goes on. Some will say it gives this great film a limited shelf life. Let me counter with this: from the beginning, Shrek has been built on comedic references. Did the first picture explain who Robin Hood was? Did we pause to clarify why there were three blind mice, or a wolf dressed up in ladies’ pajamas? Anyone unfamiliar with the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales will see dozens of jokes fly over their heads. Why criticize the film for having a mix of winks to old and new stories? The gags are still funny whether you get every aspect of them or not and they come so quickly that it doesn't even matter. Alternatively, if you don’t get the Zorro reference, go watch The Mask of Zorro!
Shrek is so good, so funny and full of so many good moments you almost don’t want to say Shrek 2 is even better. You feel as though saying you like this sequel more than the first will diminish the success of the first. Let’s just say they’re both the best. It’s a perfect choice for the whole family and with time, you only grow to appreciate it more. (On Blu-ray, March 22, 2019)
