Omae: Complexity of Self-Expression and Intimacy with the Japanese “You”
(Update: I have written a follow-up to this post wherein I exhaustively examine Katsuki's "you" pronoun usage, including every time he uses omae. Please be sure to read both posts! :D)
The anime adaption of chapter 322 is rapidly approaching, so I wanna talk about something really interesting: as far as I can tell, Izuku is the only person Katsuki has ever used the pronoun omae (おまえ) towards in-canon. Furthermore, he has only used omae towards Izuku on three occasions.
The first time is after Deku vs. Kacchan 2 in chapter 120.
The second time is right after his apology in chapter 322. (Katsuki actually uses omae four times in a row in this scene.)
(We'll get to the third time later, just you wait.)
Why does Katsuki address Izuku differently in these scenes? To answer this, we’re gonna commit some language nerdery.
First, let’s be real about the fact that Japanese pronouns can be complicated. There are a ton of them. You learn the common uses—like you could say that, broadly, omae tends to be used by guys for their friends and romantic partners. But the reality is that in a high-context language like Japanese, pronouns can come across wildly differently depending on who uses it, to whom, with what tone, and in what context.
It is difficult to generalize real-life usage, so to be clear, I am talking about MHA as a piece of media. I could try to tell you that omae is rude but also friendly but also condescending but also comedic but also confrontational but also affectionate—and so on, but that wouldn’t help you understand what Katsuki’s omae to Izuku means and why it feels significant.
The thing is, Izuku and Katsuki can each say omae and mean completely different things, because their normal way of speaking tells us how to interpret their words.
When Izuku speaks, he is polite and considerate. He uses the boyish first-person pronoun boku (僕). In Japanese, avoiding second-person pronouns is the polite thing to do; you use the person’s surname and an appropriate suffix instead, and this is the tactic Izuku uses to address others. When he does say “you,” it is usually the familiar kimi (君) towards Katsuki.
We see Izuku use omae in only a few circumstances: he uses it towards himself during inner monologues when he is trying to figure out what to do or compel himself to act, and he uses it when he faces All For One.
Both of these involve what I think of as “tough talk”—Izuku talks tough to himself to push past his fears and be a hero. With AFO, he is talking to a villain, someone he has to defeat. From someone like Izuku who speaks with such politeness and humility, omae reads as aggressive and confrontational.
Katsuki, on the other hand, is always aggressive and confrontational. He uses the masculine, somewhat boastful first-person pronoun ore (俺) and the second-person pronoun temee (てめえ) towards just about everybody. Temee is an extremely rude, combative word; Japanese descriptions usually point out that it reads like fightin’ words—it’s what you’d call an opponent, someone you are confronting, challenging, or belittling. As mentioned, you’re supposed to avoid “you” words to be polite, so the fact that Katsuki whips out temee constantly and makes up insulting nicknames instead of using anybody’s real name is just like, damn, dude!
Unlike Izuku, Katsuki sounds like he is challenging everyone all the time. This means that, coming from him, omae actually seems gentler.
After Deku vs. Kacchan 2, he opens his sentence with omae, and Izuku looks startled by this.
They just had a huge, emotional fistfight, and Katsuki… isn’t addressing him as an opponent, like he always has before. For once, he is addressing Izuku not as his enemy, but his equal.
This scene is the first time Katsuki properly grapples with the truth of their mutual weaknesses and comes to an understanding about it. It leaves him frustrated and unsure, but he walks away seeing himself and Izuku as being on the same side.
Because he takes All Might's words to heart: they are two halves of what makes a hero. They need to learn from each other and push each other to truly reach their best—as rivals, not enemies.
In chapter 322, Katsuki talks Izuku through how he felt about him all these years. He goes over all the things he's had to face to see how wrong he was, to see his own weakness and Izuku's strength. The whole time, he uses the "you" word he always has: temee.
But when it comes time to tell Izuku his true feelings, he calls Izuku by his given name, apologizes, and then right away he says this:
This is a direct call-back to the core question that Katsuki posed to Izuku during Deku vs. Kacchan 2: "Is my way of admiring All Might wrong?"
The second half to that question has always been, implicitly, "Does that mean yours is right?"
Here, Katsuki acknowledges Izuku fully as All Might's successor and affirms that Izuku's path is not wrong, using omae to tell him so. And then he uses it three more times to convince Izuku to come back with them and fight together, "because saving people is how we win."
To me, omae in this scene comes across with such softness. He's speaking with more humility than we've ever seen, both in what he's conveying and his word choice. (There is a whole other conversation to be had about Katsuki's word choice for "I'm sorry," but that is for a different time.)
This omae is not just a sign that he sees Izuku as his equal, it's expressing care for him. Katsuki sacrificed his life for Izuku, telling him, "Stop trying to win this on your own." He is trying so hard to make Izuku understand: Come back, I was wrong. Come back, I care about you.
Which brings us to the third time Katsuki uses omae: chapter 362.
That's right, the infamous "Can I still catch up to you?" / "Can I still reach you?" line uses omae.
Here's the thing that's unique about this omae: it's in Katsuki's head. This is internal monologue; he isn't talking out loud to Izuku, he isn't trying to convey something to him face-to-face, he is just thinking about Izuku.
The word choice isn't for anyone else's benefit or any external purpose: this is just how Katsuki sees him.
I can't overstate how soft, vulnerable, and sincere this moment is for Katsuki. And what gets me about him thinking of Izuku as omae is, it makes me wonder, "How long has he thought of Izuku this way?"
When did Izuku stop being temee in his head?
Changing how you address someone is a big deal in Japanese. Whether it's a name or suffix change (Deku -> Izuku) or a pronoun change (temee -> omae), it represents a significant shift in the emotional dynamics of a relationship.
It crops up a lot in media as a dramatic moment of intimacy, sometimes even being a part of love confessions. This heightened drama is exactly what we see with Katsuki's apology when he calls him Izuku.
Katsuki addresses only Izuku with his given name and omae, and in the whole run of the series, he only uses omae in a few select instances. I would argue that this is really important, subtle character writing.
Looking at the scenes, at least to me, each omae reads as progressively more honest and intimate. Each time Katsuki uses it, he is reaching for Izuku. Each time, it means more.

I have an issue with the "the giga cover is likely fujobait" because I can't help but think:
if it was truly fujobait, why now?
Why try to get their attention if MHA is now in the 100M club? The series now so popular, hori/jump doesn't need queer shippers to increase its popularity.
Why try to get fujos and queer fans, if it's already popular in that group? Wasn't it apparently shown that MHA is more popular with women and LGBTQ+ fans?
Why try to get that audience when hori had the chance to do that back in 2016-2018 when Kr//bk was the popular gay ship? Wasn't there an interview where someone pretty much asked hori if he's for kr//bk, but instead of playing along, hori made it about bkdk (the ship that no one took seriously at the time) and said he saw the hand hold more about bkdk angst. Kr//bk was a popular ship, it had bones making official art of them. The smash parody manga had moments of it. Two heroes was their movie [I believe hori didn't really help in that movie. However, notice how in the second movie, (he was a part of that one), focused on bkdk (again, the ship no one took seriously)]. Hori had the ability to use that ship as bait, but he seemed to be the only one out of everyone else to not go for it. Instead he kept pushing for the ship that was thought to be too toxic to even become a platonic ship.
If horikoshi did not want bkdk to seen as romantic, why isn't he stopping jump for implying it? You really can't say that he has no ability to, the guy went to bones and told them the ending. Now, notice how bones suddenly stopped making iz//ch moments and added a bkdk moment in the recap episodes (something that they would never do 2 seasons prior). The assistant (whom hori is friends with) is a loud speaker of dkbk lol. Hori follows him on twitter, there's no way that hori hasn't seen his dkbk art once. Same for katsuki's JP VA (who is also a friend of Hori).
Why try to bait the audience when the manga is ending?
Idk, maybe there's a chance he is actually queerbaiting and make iz//ch canon, but again, after everything?
After the togachako arc? He had made ochako confess her crush on midoriya, only for seconds later to not only brush it off as unimportant (unimportant in the sense of it was more of way to relate to toga and speak with her, it wasn't really used as a "canon izu//ocha" moment), she tells toga that she could have ochako's blood for the rest of her life (and we know that's toga's love language of returning/accepting her feelings) and she told toga that she had the cutest smile in the whole world. Like, didn't hori say that toga was made for ochako's character? I feel like it wouldn't make sense for hori to do all of this, then have ochako end up with midoriya, it would feel like a middle finger to toga tbh.
After chapters 285, 322, 362, 367, 403, and 404? The apology? The "you're the closest one to midoriya izuku, therefore I need to kill you in order to make him go crazy". The heart shaped black whip after seeing bakugou's dying body? The "their feelings became one" double spread? this bullet point could be spread to about 2-3 document pages, but I'm just going to summarize for this post lol. But overall, these chapters (and a few more), show me (imo) that it the "fujobait" claim isn't really strong to use against bkdk.
Again, maybe this is queerbait, because I know that there are times where other media/anime have done simliar and still had the MC in a heterosexual relationship, and leave everyone dumbfounded lol. Once again, all I say to this is "let's see what happens."
P.S. Isn't this the same author who said that he thought that naruto was going to end at 698 (the implied SNS ending) lol? Idk if it's true, that's just something I've heard.

was reading some of your analyses and imo pikahlua (bkgo positivity warning(?)) did a compelling write up on what the philosophies of saving vs winning embody within mha’s narrative! the way they delve into it links to the self-sacrifice vs self-preservation themes that you mentioned could've been established /post/743885232524197888
and after searching the phrase(s) win to save & save to win on their blog to see if there was anything else of interest, these other posts also came up as an amalgamation of various aspects of the concept as referenced in chp 322+285 /post/659102230778183680 and /post/658912695886790656
ik you’re not super into the whole WtS/StW thing, nor izk-bkgo’s rship (which is fair! still appreciate your dissection of the story even if i disagree with some stuff) but i do find these posts to be a nice bit of insight to possibly consider re: hrksh’s intentions, if you ever have the patience/energy to look over them. just wanted try sending this in since you’re on the dkvbk2 chapters currently, apologize if i’m overstepping anywhere
Uh, if you want me to read a specific post, perhaps use the full link next time. Luckily, pikahlua's blog is pretty organized and I think I found at least the chapter based posts you were trying to send. Also, it's fine, I don't need a trigger warning for anyone's opinion on a shounen manga.
I'm not convinced. Unless there is some sort of nuance in the Japanese where there was something less self aggrandizing in that winning concept, it really doesn't work. Coming up with a balance between Izuku and Bakugou's approaches makes sense. I can see that was the intention here. But victory has no moral weight; it is not the equal and opposite to saving in heroism. Self respect, self-preservation, self-confidence, etc. - any of those overexaggerated traits in Bakugou could be morally righteous in more moderate doses. Izuku could find some improvement in his heroism by incorporating any of these into himself.
Maybe I'm a bit spoiled by other series that handle this concept of two characters who represent opposite extreme ideals finding balance from each other with far more grace than BNHA.

If you remember, what was your first mha ship and how did you find it?
Mine personally was bkdk, in fact it was how I got into the fandom in the first place 💅🏻✨
Bkdk comic dub on YouTube- my first introduction to the two gays
i watched mha when the show first aired, but i never shipped anyone until i read ch 285 LOL. that chapter and onwards really solidified my growing interest for bkdk
when i first started the series, i was more interested in seeing how dk and bkgs relationship gets repaired, but since its literal slow burn hell i fell in and out of the manga and anime a lot. i wasn't interested in these two as a romantic ship, but more that i wanted to see them becoming better friends. i also didnt see the romantic appeal in them until ch 285 and more so in ch 322 and onward
funny story: 2 yrs ago my older siblings were binging mha and i remember asking them "is bkg nicer to dk yet" and they said "he's getting there" LMAO. last year i asked one of my friends their opinion on mha and it led to a rabbit hole of me finding out that bkg getting great redemption arc and bkdk getting so romantic coded, so that piqued my overall interest in the series again :]

I was the anon on Pika's blog. Basically, from screenshots I've seen second hand, they had a post about the endeavor and dabi chapters, a third party made a snarky comment about it, and the official translator agreed with the third party and called the person an "asshole". The fan had previously made a lot of posts about Katsuki and BakuDeku interactions, which I assume the official translator had been linked too by other third parties and was frustrated with them and lashed out. Unfortunately, this gave dubebros (and the translator's friends in the industry) a license to harass this person, and they basically left the (English-speaking) fandom after 322 was published. The official translator also left twitter even before this, so I assume he also got a lot of harassment from the other side/maybe realized it wasn't a good idea to call out an individual fan on social media in a fandom like mha, but I don't think he ever apologized to the person he singled out either.
That's honestly very disgusting to basically "Oh, yeah, harass this person" all because "Oh, my ego has been hit" and anyone who actually went ahead and drove that person off their social media is just as bad and it's worse to not even apologize to the person.
It's just messed up.

I try not to hate anyone or anything because I see hate as a type of venom that kills both the target & the user.
So, if I hate someone, then it's because they, as an individual, did something that I am seriously not okay with.
Something that is diametrically opposed to my core beliefs as a person.
Not only that, but they'd also need to be entirely unapologetic about it & unwilling to change themselves as I try to be a forgiving person.
I try not to hold a grudge, but I can at times hold a bit of one sometimes. However, if a certain degree of penance is exacted & the individual truly does change their ways or at least tries, then I will go out of my way to try & forgive them because genuine effort deserves genuine effort in kind.
Because I understand that people change & they deserve to be allowed to change.
This is why I am so much more okay with Enji Todoroki & his redemption arc & am only just beginning to come around to Bakugou's arc.
(Spoilers) It was only because of chapter 322 in the MHA manga where he actively apologized to Izuku & admitted that the way he used to treat him was wrong that I am willing to put my past intolerance of him behind me, because to me, what matters most is the fact that he acknowledges his faults & is actively trying to change.
Like, don't get me wrong, I don't need Bakugo to become a goody-goody because part of why people like him is that he's an asshole.
Just to take accountability & not be an outright abusive asshole is all & it looks like that's where things are going, so I'm content. :D
