i know most people follow me for my fanart, and at times i do get too concerned about the numbers on my posts, but drawing my ocs is the most indulgent, and self healing art i could ever make. probably only a handful of people would ever care about the art i make of them, but that's okay since i had fun drawing them and that's more important to me :)
anyways, these are updated sheets of rael and reyna after 6 years lmao.

is there any way to get storyboard pro as a one time purchase? it was literally a thing. like, about $1500 or almost $2000 but now they only have subscription based stuff. like, seriously??
yeah, piracy.
otherwise if you want to stick to the legal, official version then there's no other option but to use their subscription plan

The fourth illustration is a fun art swap challenge we did where I did the line art for this one and Xuune did the coloring :) do check out xuune’s post to see their amazing illustrations too!

I feel like my artworks turn out pretty meh because there's so much to memorize, and my concentration is pretty shit when I gotta listen to tutorials 🤦
unfortunately, i can't offer you a different solution besides dedicating the time, practice, and patience into drawing. it can feel frustratingly long to see some improvement, but so long as you're kind and patient with yourself, then you'll start to feel better about yourself and your art. drawing isn't necessarily about memorization, it's much more about proactively engaging and doing the drawing rather than having a mental checklist of xyz.
i'm not entirely sure what your workflow/process is when you're trying to learn, it sounds like you're trying to tackle too many things at once? if tutorials aren't cutting it out for you, then i suggest doing more observational sketches of what you see irl to get into the practice of drawing. do master studies/copies of existing work, be in active engagement with critically thinking about deconstructing and analyzing other artists' works. select one thing you want to focus on first and study it, take notes on what other artists are doing with how they use color, light/shadow, lineart, etc.
you definitely will be able to develop your visual library, draw based on intuition, and see improvement the more you're simply doing the drawing. it's far more productive to reframe your mindset on acknowledging what you need to learn/study more on, and being aware that this is a journey of improvement. no one ever hits a "peak" at drawing and stops there, there's always room for improvement for everyone and its up to the artist if they can acknowledge that and be patient with themselves.

Hi xuune, I have a question.
I want to study specific elements of many different artists, but their art styles are so different that I’m not sure how to combine them to make it my own. Any advice?
tbh it takes a lot of experimentation and study to find an art style that you can call your own. my response is kinda long since i'll be showing you a process with how i think about this.
i like to ask myself these questions when looking at different artists' art styles:
1. what makes their art style appealing? figure out 1-2 specific element of each artist that's the most appealing to you (linework, color, stylization of anatomy, etc). depending on how many artists you're looking at, i would try grouping them based on those categories.
2. what do i observe with each artists' style? typically a lot of artists have their own "rule" of how they use a specific element in their artwork. if you want to study how someone else makes an appealing piece of artwork, make some observational notes of what they're doing to break it down. 3. start two at a time when combining styles. say you like artist A's use of linework but also artist B's use of color. try combining those first and mixing and matching anything else slowly.
it might be helpful if i got to see which artists you're looking at as well just so i understand what might be troubling you in trying to combine their styles? but either way, for example purposes, i'm going to reference napp (lineart) and ggdg (colors). here's what i notice about their artworks that i hyperlinked: napp's linework:
use of solid blacks/crosshatching on shadows
form/textures defined by line weight
uses a textured brush
Tumblr media
i more or less attempted to be similar to napp's linework style with how they choose to define forms and shadow.
moving onto colors, here's what i noticed for ggdg's:
primarily flat colors/rendering style
hair is shaded stylistically in black texturing
has a preference for lineless
uses a textured brush
Tumblr media
i decided to follow along with most things i observed except for having the colors done in lineless. i did make some creative liberties to add terminator lines to shadows since that's my personal preferences with rendering.
but i also decided to combine one more style and it's the graphic elements from urana's artworks:
Tumblr media
that's typically how i would think if i want to try combining styles to find something i like! after doing this exercise i was pretty satisfied with how my art came out.
don't feel discouraged if it takes some time for you to figure out what you want your artwork to look like! tbh even now i still don't feel like my pieces have a distinguished art style since i like studying off of other artists a lot. my pieces tend to vary time to time so ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
at the end of the day, i think it's most important to observe closely and break down why an artist's elements are appealing to you and is working for you, and see if it's something that you actually like seeing in your own artwork. there's a clear difference between appreciating someone's style because it speaks out to your aesthetics vs actually incorporating it into your own art. there's plenty of artists whose styles i like, but some of them aren't ones i want to combine into my own style.
either way, i hoped my advice and seeing my process helped in some way! maybe you might've been already thinking in this way but i hope my explanations were still worth reading :)

Unprompted loving art ask this afternoon, what keeps you going with your art, about the creation aspect more than the finished piece? What’s fun about the pursuit of improvement or the community you get from being an artist? Is there any certain part (linework, sketching, conceptualizing, etc) of the art process that you consider your favorite or most fulfilling, even and especially if it’s not the easiest part for you or the one you’re best at?
Love your art always, Kai 🙂
hey jeremy! what an incredibly loaded question LMAO??? it took me awhile to think about how i wanted to answer this, sorry for replying so late!:
1. What keeps you going with your art, about the creation aspect more than the finished piece?
tbh i bounce back and forth between enjoying the creation aspect compared to the finished piece and vice versa. with what you're asking, its mainly when i'm figuring things out in my work and then seeing the vision come together in the bigger picture. its basically the kronk meme with him saying "it's all coming together" for me, lmao. but in terms of what keeps me going in general, it's mainly bc i'm personally driven to make art for myself first and foremost, so i like seeing my works being finished through to the end, even if it may take awhile. other circumstances, i end up abandoning certain ideas/wips if i cant see the vision for it anymore.
2. What’s fun about the pursuit of improvement or the community you get from being an artist?
there's no deep answer for this one, i just like knowing that im learning and improving my skills. there's always something to learn from art that exists around you and i like taking that opportunity rather than keeping my skill set and visual library limited. in terms of the community, when it comes to online spaces i'm actually really bad at that lol. im hella introverted and being on social media overwhelms me a lot. i'm bad at keeping up with other people's posts and commenting all the time. busy with my own life and all that, yknow. but in the rare chances that i do engage with communities i'm involved with, its enjoyable to see whenever my art successfully connects with someone else and engaging in conversations whenever someone's art speaks out to me.
3. Is there any certain part (linework, sketching, conceptualizing, etc) of the art process that you consider your favorite or most fulfilling, even and especially if it’s not the easiest part for you or the one you’re best at?
unfortunately all parts of the process can be a pain in the ass for me lmao. all my works have situations where i end up preferring either the conceptualization, sketch (most common), linework, or the colors (very rare). sometimes the concept was more ambitious but the execution was mediocre; sometimes the sketch has more life and energy to it than the lineart; sometimes the lineart was far more appealing compared to when colors were added in; sometimes the colors in theory was imagined better than the actual execution of it. all of those situations has happened to me before in a lot of my artworks, art is genuinely hard! but i like pulling through and seeing the end product come together despite the hardships, even if i do end up being completely unsatisfied with what i drew. it's also kind of the reason why i rarely post sketches. i like having finished works and fully realized ideas ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
anyways, thanks for sending this in! i appreciate your curiosity whenever it comes to asking how i view my relationship to art, and i'm always grateful for the support you've given me for the past years :) hope you're doing well!

Hi! I love your art so much and think you’re so talented! I was wondering if would you ever draw more band themed fanart??
ty! i feel like atm the only band themed fanart im interested in doing is for sapphicflower's the art of falling. if we're just talking abt band AU art in general, idk it depends a lot on the vibes of the characters for whatever fandom im drawing for

jayvik storyboard sketches from the past 4 months
idk why but i'm interested in the idea of them getting teleported to ionia, so these sketches were about that. some of them are references to ionia's concept art
