This was a Secret Santa gift from @ryuko-rose that I got for Christmas over on a Lilo & Stitch Discord server we're a part of. Many thanks to them for making it!

Note that I'm not an artist, but the server allowed me to commission someone else to make some art for the Secret Santa. I was the Secret Santa for @mrnifflertheshiny and I commissioned Meliscellaneous Art to make a piece of his experimentsona Mr. Niffler and Christmas-themed fan experiment Stocking with a couple familiar faces.

Mertle Edmonds may not enjoy Niffler's carols, but at least her mother does! 🎶 But Niffler needs to learn a thing or two about sharing the holiday spirit with his red-and-white cousin.

As you previously mentioned that Lilo was the one who comforted Mertle when her father died, what was the kindest thing Mertle did for Lilo in return when they were in college?

Mertle didn't try to repay Lilo for her kindness. Instead, Mertle was faced with the reality that out of everyone she's ever known, Lilo is probably the most genuine, unconditionally-loving, and loyal, and Mertle decides almost overnight to make sure she never takes that for granted again. Rather than bully Lilo, feel threatened by Lilo, or misunderstand Lilo, she chooses as a high school senior to make a concentrated effort to befriend Lilo, and of course it works right away because that's what Lilo has always ultimately tried to be to those girls. And because they've all known one another since kindergarten, it's very very easy to be close friends. They're all practically sisters. After all, that's what 'ohana is! Mertle became Lilo's friend. Mertle dubbed Lilo her best friend. That was her response to Lilo's kindness on the worst night of her life in our fancanon here. She doesn't spend time in college or otherwise trying to do something in return as if Lilo just did her a favor and she needs to be polite - Lilo did the right thing, and it inspired Mertle to do the right thing. That's all! So the short answer is nothing.

Monsters scared bullies

The image you sent shows Sulley and Randall, the main monsters from the movie Monsters, Inc., looking scary. Below them, there are four young girls, including Lilo from Lilo & Stitch. It seems like Sulley and Randall are scaring Mertle and her friends because they were mean to Lilo.

Here are some things that make me think that:

* Sulley and Randall's expressions: They both have wide, open mouths with sharp teeth showing, and their eyes are bulging out. This is a classic scary monster look.

* The girls' expressions: They look scared and surprised. They are all covering their mouths with their hands, and one of them is even jumping back in fear.

* Lilo is in the group: Lilo is the main character from Lilo & Stitch, and she is known for being kind and compassionate. It's likely that Mertle and her friends were bullying Lilo, and Sulley and Randall are trying to scare them off.

Of course, this is just speculation. We don't know for sure what's happening in the image. But based on what we can see, it seems like Sulley and Randall are scaring Mertle and her friends for being mean to Lilo.

CATCHING MY BREATH, STARING OUT AN OPEN WINDOW

Mertle Edmonds is based on Mertle from Lilo & Stitch. She is a 23 year old human, mall employee, and uses she/her pronouns. She has no powers. Mertle is portrayed by Luca Hollestelle and she is taken.

CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDN’T BE SURE

Mertle wasn’t a very nice child. In her defense, she didn’t have an easy childhood. Her parents split up when she was in second grade and suddenly, daddy’s little princess didn’t seem to be the center of his world anymore. She went from having everything she wanted to the one thing she wanted the most, a happy family, becoming a distant wish. Her father moved out and she stayed with her mother, except for the occasional weekends he would pick her up, buying her everything she wanted to make up for his absence in her life; manipulating her into favoring him, though he all but abandoned her when it was convenient for him. As time went on, school also became a struggle for her. She wasn’t as smart as a lot of the kids. It took her much longer to learn to read than everyone else, she failed several exams, and she was the only girl in their grade with glasses. Feeling like the worst, she had to make everyone believe she was the best to get by, even if that meant turning them on other helpless students... or one in particular. It wasn’t hard to make friends when she had a big house for sleepovers, a pool in the backyard and anything she asked for at the snap of her fingers. Maybe they weren’t real friends, maybe they didn’t even really like her, but it was easier to fool herself into believing that than facing the truth. Somewhere in middle school, Mertle ditched her glasses for contacts, and she started to pay other students to do her schoolwork for her. She kept up with the newest trends and flaunted her daddy’s money. She had to stay on top. She continued to be too hard on Lilo, but all of her pent up annoyance came out when she came around. The girl that dared to be completely and entirely herself, no matter how friend-less and annoying and downright weird she was. The truth was, Mertle didn’t hate her. She was just sad. Her father eventually stopped coming around at all, her mother became stricter, and she didn’t know what she wanted in life. Evermore, in that sense, was a relief. While she acted annoyed on the outside, there was nothing holding her back when she woke up in a random town where almost no one knew her name. She didn’t have to worry about cheating her way through college to get a degree for a career she didn’t even want, or upholding a reputation she was starting to think she didn’t particularly want either. Working for a living sucked, but she there was a little bit of hope that for now, she could see what it was like to step foot outside of the box she’d built for herself.

I HAD A FEELING SO PECULIAR

❀ Berlioz Bonfamille: He’s hot and he can play piano... and he’s not interested in her in the slightest. At this point, it isn’t even that Mertle likes him. She just wants him to like her. ❀ Pacifica Northwest: Mertle absolutely idolizes the other girl. If she had gone to the same school, she knows she would have never been the leader, but would have been perfectly fine following in Pacifica’s footsteps. Whether she wants her to or not.  ❀ Chester McBadbat: What is it her that attracts the unpopular wannabes? She isn’t sure if he has a crush on her or he just doesn’t know how to talk to people, but she is running out of ways to politely tell him he disgusts her.

Hear me out...

Mertle is horrible to Lilo but they could have been friends before the car crash, Mertle is a horrible bully in the aftermath of Lilo's parents' death for sure but keep in mind that she's a child and probably ill equipped to help Lilo with the trauma of losing her parents. This doesn't excuse her actions but could potentially explain them.

Lilo punching when Mertle called her crazy about Pudge was 100% warranted, especially if they'd been friends beforehand, but the young adults in the room were saying and thinking the same thing, probably even knowing the circumstances. Lilo's biting is not really an age appropriate response and intensified the ostracization she was facing.

Mertle is not a super normal kid despite her calling Lilo weird. She fixated on the possibility of Lilo having her head cut off like the shelter dogs do if they have rabies. It's a gross indicator that they have similar sensibilities at least if Lilo's backstory for Scrump is anything to go off of.

Mertle also knew that Lilo didn't have any dolls before Lilo asked to join the girls, which could mean that they'd played together before.

Lilo goes home after this rejection and listens to Heartbreak Hotel on her record player at max volume. "Since my baby left me-" doesn't necessarily seem like someone interacting with someone who's always been a massive hater, and it's a ... unique choice when "hound dog" is right there and better suited to someone who's exaggerated their hurt in a situation to hurt another person. "Hound Dog" would not fit the moment tonally because it's an upbeat song about someone who ain't shit and by contrast Lilo cares intensely about Mertle and the girls' approval and feels heartbroken at this point.

Stopped from the above coping mechanism, Lilo uses her "practical voodoo" book to "punish [her] friends" as soon as she's not occupied talking to Cobra Bubbles.

So we have Mertle the toxic (ex)friend Edmonds who is horribly cruel to our really wonderful if behaviorally challenged protagonist of several movies and a TV show. Lilo gets better and finds new family and friends over the course of all that. But Mertle is still stuck as the mean girl, doubling down and turning her own friends against her.

There's some secondary shiz with Mertle's parents being divorced that goes to explain both her disdain for Lilo's nontraditional family and her being spoiled, as well as some of why people are ready to forgive her for being awful. It could be a thing that the two bonded over if Mertle were to get over herself.

So like, what if they were to crush on one another? What if they'd been important to one another but Mertle wasn't able to handle the change in dynamics with her friend and instead fixated on how much she hated her for being "weird" and giving her difficult feelings? And what if she were to age out of being the absolute worst and realize that she'd been awful to this really wonderful cool girl? And what if Lilo had been waiting for her childhood friend to do just that? Because she's always loved her, even when she was awful?

The upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch has found its Lilo!

Knight Edge Media reports that newcomer Hawaiian actress Maia Kealoha has been cast as Lilo Pelekai. Kealoha has no acting credits to her name but she has appeared in Little Miss Kona Coffee pageants as seen on Instagram. She joins Zach Galifianakis, who TheWrap previously reported that he will play Pleakley.

Furthermore, Knight Edge claims to have learned that Moana actress Auli’i Cravalho was approached by Disney to play Nani Pelekai, but she is currently unable to due to commitments to a film adaptation to the 2017 musical based on the 2004 film Mean Girls. Chris Sanders could also be returning to voice Stitch once again (he previously stated in an interview published in September 2022 that Disney hadn't asked him yet). Finally, a new casting call has been put out for the role of Mertle Edmonds.

Did Mertle's friends ever become friends with Lilo?

Yes, they did! Under the “lilo’s college days” tag, you’ll see more info. Mertle, Yuki, Teresa, Elena, Lilo and Victoria all became a group of friends after their senior year of high school, right before they graduated hula. It started for Mertle specifically when her dad died and Lilo understood her grief and showed her compassion, in spite of the way Mertle had treated her over the years. After that, they very gradually became friends, Mertle swearing Lilo is her best friend, and it wasn’t hard for the other girls to follow her lead (because they never really disliked Lilo as vehemently as Mertle had anyway). They jokingly call themselves the CHGH now (Current Hawaiian Girls of Hawaii), and though Mertle and the girls can still be rude and shallow towards Lilo and Victoria, they’re all buddies and it’s a tight-knit group by the time they hit college-age. After all, they’ve known each other since they were 6.

In college, they all go to Honolulu University except for Yuki, who went to a different school to pursue a sports career. Yuki visited Honolulu sometimes to catch up with the girls on her breaks from school. Zeke Lau, Ani’s dad, is technically part of the friend group too, but they don’t include him as in the “CHGH” term for obvious reasons. Zeke’s bandmates and guy friends, Neal and Kale, sometimes hang out with the girls also.

So yes! Friends! Ohana, even! It just took growing up to get it right.
