you probably have watched jreg before since that video's pretty recent with a low view count. i can name at least 3 women on different sections of radblr (not including myself) that have implied they are familiar with his videos which is weird number of occurrences for a internet microcelebrity with no especially strong ties to feminism or trans rights. is it because someone with a radfem blog is a lot more likely to be chronically online and also more likely to be interested in niche political ideologies considering radical feminism is not mainstream or popular? im not even sure where im going with this its just a weird phenomenon and i wonder why it's happened.
@magnetictapedatastorage shared one of his videos a couple years ago. you've missed the obvious: people on radblr follow each other

“Many Towns Voting Today,” Border Cities Star. December 5, 1932. Page 7. ---- Three in Mayoralty Races In Ottawa And Woodstock --- TORONTO, Dec. 5. - Residents of numerous cities, towns and villages and townships of Ontario go to the polls today to elect new municipal councils for the year 1933. Lower taxes, rigid economy and balanced budgets have been popular planks, upon which the multitude of candidates have appealed to the electorate. The exceptionally large number of nominees this year has created unusual interest and new marks in polling are expected to be registered.
In the majority of the larger cities the mayoralty contest has been waged between two aspirants. Ottawa, Windsor and Woodstock have three seeking the chief magistrate's chair. Hamilton, Chatham, Kingston, Kitchener, Galt and St. Thomas will see the vote divided among two for this honor.
Brockville, believing that money that might be spent on elections could be better used for unemployment relief, returned the entire municipal slate by acclamation with Fred Wolthausen as mayor. Stratford has accorded C. I. Graff another term as mayor by acclamation.

Join Hands Day
Help organize or join an event to benefit your community on Join Hands Day, a day dedicated to coming together with others to make things better.
Join Hands Day lights up the first Saturday of May each year, making it a day dedicated to volunteering and bridging the gap between different generations.
In 2024, this celebration falls on May 4th. It’s a special day, initiated in the year 2000 by the American Fraternal Alliance in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation.
This day isn’t just about offering your time for a good cause; it’s about bringing together the energy and wisdom of both younger and older generations to foster understanding and cooperation across age divides.
Why celebrate? It’s simple yet profound: volunteering strengthens communities by providing essential services and support and enriches the lives of volunteers.
Engaging in volunteer work can enhance mental health, boost social skills, and even improve job prospects, especially for young people. Moreover, Join Hands Day emphasizes the power of collective effort across generations, encouraging a blend of experiences and perspectives to achieve common goals.
The spirit of Join Hands Day is all about unity and collaboration. Whether you’re sharing knowledge through a skills exchange, participating in a local clean-up, or simply spreading awareness about the importance of volunteering, every action counts.
It’s a celebration of our shared humanity, highlighting how much stronger we are when we join hands and work together. Join Hands Day reminds us that every day is an opportunity to make a positive impact in the world, one good deed at a time.
History of Join Hands Day
Once upon a time, in the year 2000, a bunch of big-hearted people from the American Fraternal Alliance teamed up with the Points of Light Foundation.
Their mission? To spark a day on the first Saturday of May each year when folks of all ages could join forces and spread some kindness. And so, Join Hands Day was born.
This wasn’t just any volunteering day; it had a twist. The idea was to mix things up, get young guns and wise wizards to work together and break down those pesky age barriers.
The first year kicked off with a bang, and the excitement was just getting started. They wanted to make sure everyone got in on the action, so they threw in some cash and shiny awards for some lucky groups, celebrating their awesome projects at a fancy conference. Talk about a party with a purpose!
But wait, there’s more! Imagine fixing bikes for kiddos who needed them or sprucing up graveyards to honor the past. That’s the kind of magic Join Hands Day aimed for, turning simple acts into treasures of togetherness.
Even though it’s all about that first Saturday in May, there was this one time in 2001 when the celebration took a little detour to June. Guess they couldn’t wait to spread more joy!
Today, Join Hands Day keeps the spirit alive, making every first Saturday in May a day to remember. From book readings in nursing homes to planting new life in parks, it’s all about sharing skills, laughter, and a whole lot of love.
How to Celebrate Join Hands Day
Treasure Hunt for Good
Team up for Adventure: Gather friends from different generations for a community treasure hunt. Together, seek out hidden volunteer opportunities. It’s fun with a splash of kindness!
Skill Swap Extravaganza
Learning Across Ages: Host a day where everyone shares their skills. Young teach old, old teach young. It’s a learning party for all ages!
Community Garden Gathering
Green Thumbs Unite: Join hands to plant a community garden. It’s a celebration of growth, not just for plants but also for friendships.
The Great Cook-off
Culinary Time Travel: Challenge each other to a cook-off. Create dishes from various eras. Share food, stories, and a hearty laugh over the dinner table.
Time Capsule Creations
Preserve Today for Tomorrow: Craft a time capsule together. Fill it with memories, gadgets, and guesses about the future. Seal it with a promise to revisit it together.
Each paragraph brings to life a unique way to celebrate Join Hands Day, emphasizing fun, learning, and community engagement across generations.

Idk if you've seen this, but so many corporations withdrew from Ottawa Pride because of their pro Palestinians stance. CHEO, the mayor, many school boards, idk who else... They claim they did it because Ottawa Pride statements goes against community coming together. It just makes me so mad...
The Liberal Party of Canada dropped out too.

Scottish born abolitionist John Hossack died on November 8th in Ottawa, Illinois.
Hossack immigrated to North America at the age of twelve when he travelled to Quebec to work in an uncle's confectionery store. Upon becoming an adult, he set up his own confectionery store. He married Martha Lens in 1833; the couple would eventually have eleven children together. Soon after his marriage, Hossack left the confectionery business to become a contractor on the Long Sault canal being built on the Saint Lawrence River. Hossack then moved to Ottawa via Chicago, where he had done contract work on the Illinois and Michigan Canal. In Ottawa, Hossack was engaged in the lumber business and grain trade, and instrumental in the building of the first Illinois River Bridge.
Hossack's house, now named after the man, was part of The Underground Railroad, he was a strong opponent to slavery and hid as many as 13 fleeing slaves in this house until they could safely reach the next station.
By participating in the Underground Railroad, Hossack was violating not only the Federal Fugitive Slave Act, but also the infamous Illinois "Black Law," which forbade most African Americans from living within the State. In 1860, Hossack was one of several Ottawans charged and convicted in Federal Court in Chicago for violating the Fugitive Slave Law. The famous case involved Jim Gray, a slave who had reached Ottawa after fleeing slavery in a Southern state. During the trial Gray was abducted from the Ottawa courtroom and helped to freedom in Canada. The jury convicted Hossack, but recommended mercy, and Judge Drummond sentenced Hossack to only ten days in the Cook County jail and fined him $100.
Hossack addressed the court prior to his sentencing, in a speech subsequently published by the American Anti-Slavery Society. Hossack began "I am found guilty of a violation of the Fugitive Slave law, and it may appear strange to your honor that I have no sense of guilt" and then concluded
“ the jury have found me guilty; yes, guilty of carrying out the still greater principles of the Declaration of Independence; yes, guilty of carrying out the still greater principles of the Son of God. Great God! Can these things be? Can it be possible? What country is this? Can it be that I live in a land boasting of freedom, of morality, of Christianity? How long, O, how long shall the people bow down and worship this great image set up in this nation? Yes, the jury say guilty, but recommend me to the mercy of the Court. Mercy, sir, is kindness to the guilty. I am guilty of no crime. I therefore ask for no mercy; I ask for justice. Mercy is what I ask of my God. Justice in the courts of my adopted country is all I ask. It is the inhuman and infamous law that is wrong, not me”
During his ten days in prison, Hossack was taken out and banqueted by John Wentworth, mayor of Chicago, and greatly acclaimed by the people.

Less of a question and more of a comment, Im sorry if its in the wrong spot lol, I just had to say this. I promise it’s not a hate comment, and sorry for the length.
I have never in my life seen something that has made me feel so physically ill. I feel genuinely sick reading this, and mentally exhausted from it. I have never read anything that has ever made me want to do something about these topics so badly. I hate this comic, and feel every fiber of my body crumble that I can’t do anything to help these women. It’s such an uncomfortable and painful feeling to see such heinous acts being done to people who i know are just down on their luck and never deserved this. I hate to sound cliche, but this was the eye opener of the fucking century.
You should be proud of your work, you’re doing something that I haven’t ever seen work as effectively and as potently as this.
One question I guess; I unfortunately can’t donate, but what else could us readers do? This comic destroyed me and I’m genuinely desperate at this point to see some happy ending come out of this, and I don’t know what I can do.
Thank you for this question! And sorry for ruining your mood, I think... TL/DR: Giving a shit is free. I recall this one lady being interviewed by a local news reporter regarding her views on the homeless problem in her neighbourhood, and she said something that stuck in my mind: "The more I have to [pick up] human feces, the less empathy I have." I think that one comment really hit home why we're at this point in society. People connect with the characters on the Bunny Cruise because we see their backstories, how they got to where they are, what they've lost along the way, what they dream of for the future, and how they've suffered in trying to reach for that dream. But, even though we know the guy OD'ing on the sidewalk passed out in his own sick must have had a life, have dreams, it's not something we think of in the moment. The difference between the Cruise and real life is that the girls have each other to support them through it, but we will walk over or side-step the heroin addict on the sidewalk without a second glance. That "mentally drained" and "physically ill" feeling is the cognitive dissonance talking. It's when we're forced to confront an perspective that challenges our way of thinking, or in this case, face a fear that perhaps the only difference between us and 67, 10, the twins, or that guy on the sidewalk, is just pure luck. For a lot of us, this is something very uncomfortable, and it's much easier to put it out of our heads and move on with our lives. And politicians take advantage of this fear and apathy far too often. Famously, Mark Sutcliffe (Calling you out, asshole), the recently elected Mayor of Ottawa, campaigned on zoning land for more large, single-family homes rather than more compact, affordable housing. He called it "preserving the community and keeping it safe", but we all know what that really means by now. Or they will call for increased police spending and promise to be tougher on crime (which Sutcliffe also did). Because having bad luck or being neglected and abused by capitalism is a crime now... I think the easiest thing to do, is to just think about it, and speak up when the issue comes up. All too often, things like homeless shelters, affordable housing projects, and safe injection sites, don't get built because people don't want to think about the people living on the fringe of society. But the thing is, people with nowhere to go have to go somewhere.
I donate to a women's shelter because I've worked with women fleeing violence in the past, and it's an important cause for me. I also realize that I am in a very fortunate position to be able to pay rent and have a little left over to put toward charity work. But speaking up and spreading the word is free. The next time someone wants to veto a safe injection site project, speak up against them, ask them what millionaire real estate firm is lining their pockets. Vote for that city councilor campaigning to build shelters and affordable homes. Have a relative who says "the homeless deserve what's happening to them"? Shut them down, ruin that christmas dinner. They sound like a dick anyway.
It's not much, but I think if we can all treat our fellow humans a little better instead of kicking them to the curb, we can make a bit of a difference in the world.

Ottawa friends - as you may know our Pride parade is being heavily attacked for taking a principled stand on Palestine. Through deliberately misrepresenting the statement (shown below) on Palestinian solidarity, the right wing mayor has led a charge that has stripped them of all corporate or government sponsors.
Sadly, our school board was pushed to pull out by extremist trustees. This is very personal to me as I know what it's like going to school without feeling support, and I truly believe that the kids getting a chance to participate should take precedence over petty politics.
If you are from the area please consider signing this letter asking them to reverse their decision.
first link is to add your voice, second is the original statement.

it should be said that when protecting against both state actors and non-state actors against doxxing, it is important know your enemy. and not just generally, because the police in every city has their own tactics.
more details and info.
(these are loosely based on the experience of various comrades in other cities) in mtl they are prone to tear gassing protesters, this doesn't really happen in ottawa, toronto, or vancouver, etc. mtl is prob the most outwardly aggressive cities toward protesters and i heard j Trudeau's riding is an absolute shitstain with little social resources LOL
in toronto and other cities in ONT, protest arrests are the primary way in which they identify protesters so it is ESP important in that city to have a lawyers number on hand, to hide your identity, and to avoid arrest. they also do this really insidious thing where they move protesters from one precinct to the next in discreet civilian black vans when people protest outside of their buildings. they do this so that they can announce that the prisoner in which protesters are seeking to be released is no long at that location. they will be buying time for HOURS to do this. it's a divide and conquer strategy. it's meant to disrupt protest and organizing but it's primary purpose it to ID + impose restrictions rather than actually incarcerate anyone.
winnipeg has the second highest police budget in canada, they have a helicopter that they fly over a predominantly indigenous community every night, and they frequently racially profile so that they can beat any native man or women or child without impunity. they do not use tear gas, because they don't need to. they can mobilize white supremacist communities to commit crimes instead. i learned in like 2018(?) that most of the employed police in winnipeg are undercover and that many of them have never even been seen in uniform (since they're duty is as plain clothes officers) i also learned from s worker community members that it is a common occurrence for police to send reports of all the details of their surveillance something that not even my communist student organizer friends at one of the universities didn't know in terms of their deep level of surveillance. the police their are more likely to straight up steal from you too.
in vancouver, the police show up in huge numbers to intimidate. their mayor is sponsored by fucking white supremacists ?? and i have heard about SO many bad faith actors within the movements like more so than the average chauvinism issues... the police presence in vancouver is actually insane. like a public park without protests happening are filled with officers looking to hit homeless people. vancouver police are notorious for wrecking property and acting violently in hopes of baiting protestors and then lying about who did the damage. the entirety of north vancouver is so racist that you will get kkk level hostility there.
also if you are worried about doxxing, similarly with stalking, it is always going to be someone who knows you or has access to you in some way! like yeah you can lock down your social media and be relatively anonymous. but the ppl who are most likely going to fuck with your life by is going to be like a bad faith actor/devil's advocate, zionist, or white supremacists you went to school with or has worked with you in some capacity... and the scary thing is that it is all too easy for these people to access your full name, email, phone number, and address. like there is so much to think about in terms of security and privacy but mostly you need to know what you are up against, and figure out the best preventative and safety measures.

OTTAWA, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Six people, including a 73-year-old suspect, died and one person was seriously injured in a shooting at a residential building in the city of Vaughan in Canada's Ontario province on Sunday night, local police said.
The York Regional Police Department said it was working to confirm the identities of the victims and inform their families. Vaughan, which is less than 50 km (31 miles) north of downtown Toronto, is located in Ontario's York region and has a population of about 320,000.
Authorities have not released more information about the victims, the suspect, or the suspect's motive.
York police responded to a call about an "active male shooter who had shot several victims" at a condominium in Vaughan at about 7:20 p.m. local time on Sunday (0020 GMT on Monday), the department said.
The suspect was shot at by police and pronounced dead at the scene, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a statement on Monday.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca expressed condolences to the families of the victims at a press conference on Monday and said the wounded person was recovering at a hospital.
"Everybody is horrified ... to wake up to this news this morning, to hear it last night. People are just in absolute shock," Del Duca said.
The SIU, which investigates deaths involving police, said it was looking into the death of the suspect and that a post-mortem was scheduled for Tuesday.

"LABOR GROUP PLANS CONTINUED PROTEST TO CITY AND OTTAWA," Toronto Globe. August 4, 1933. Page 9. --- Labor Representative's Inclusion on Relief Commission Urged -- RAIL WORKERS BACKED --- At last night's meeting of the Toronto District Trades and Labor Council in the Labor Temple, the delegates decided unanimously "to continue to protest" alike to Mayor Stewart and the City Council "at the non-inclusion of a representative of organized labor on the Civic Commission inquiring into relief and welfare work in Toronto," and also to the Federal Minister of Railways and Labor in Ottawa "in regard to railway workers being asked to bear an undue proportion of the load arising out of the shrinking transportation revenues on Canadian railways." Described as "Deadwood." In the latter connecton, Delegate A. Evans, Ontario Lodge, 619, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America, drew attention to the fact that "during the depression years there have been over 23, railway workers put out of service, and the wages of those retained reduced by 1 per cent., many of whom are working part-time. A recent newspaper cartoon dealing with that situation intimated that the systems were getting rid of that much 'dead-wood." Apparently the welfare of those workers takes second place to that of the bond holders and the preferred shares. These economies may or may not have been effective, but certainly they have reduced the purchasing power of the people."
Vice-President Dan Noble supplemented that statement and declared: "The position of rail shopmen today is something like that of certain firms in Toronto, to whom Mayor Stewart referred recently, when he pointed cut that the wage-levels were deplorable that, if not raised, the Control Board might have to name them, in the light of the fact that the Welfare Department felt compelled to permit certain employees to continue to draw relief supplies, in addition to their wages. "If care is not taken," concluded delegate Noble, "the railway mechanics will be in a similar plight."
Musical Group to March. John Sutherland, of the Demon--- on the forthcoming annual Labor Day Parade, intimating that a fifty-piece band of the Musical Protective Association will march this year. In same connection, delegate Charles Bal stated: "It should be distinctly understood that this annual parade is conducted by the international trade unions of this city; that the marchers are headed by the Mayor and the civic authorities: and that we will tolerate no contact of any kind what-ever with Communist or near-Communist groups that are not native to nor will they thrive on Canadian soil."
Applause greeted this latter assertion.
Three delegates to the forthcoming Labor Congress of Canada (Windsor) are to represent the Trades Council.
The pre-delegate expenses must not exceed an aggregate of $100, and the representatives will be chosen next meeting from the following nominees: W. Genovese, J. W. Buckley,J. Noble, D. W. Kennedy, C. Locks,C. Ball. W. Dunn, J. Jenkinson, and E. E. Woollen.

Ottawa's night mayor's council has been released and... it's entirely business owners??? mostly bars and restaurants
shouldn't there be community representatives on there, too? like, representatives of the people who can advocate for what residents are actually looking for in an active downtown nightlife instead of just a bunch of business owners catering to their own self-interests and profits?
downtown Ottawa needs reliable transit before you can improve the nightlife and you're gonna have to get the day mayor to understand it's a public service, not a for-profit business, before that happens. so...never.
and once that's sorted, bars and restaurants and occasional concerts aren't going to change much. Ottawa already has that and there's only so many times you can go to the same mediocre, overpriced businesses. there are only so many times you can go out for dinner and get drunk before that gets boring.
the city needs activities. activities where food and alcohol aren't the only point of going out. activities you normally have to go out to the suburbs or Quebec for because downtown is just food and alcohol.
turn one of the vacant government buildings into an indoor adventure mall: escape rooms, an arcade that isn't primarily a bar, bowling alley, an indoor soft play park with a kids' area and a grownups' area, roller rink, any other fun activity you can think of and can fit in the building, then turn the top floor into restaurants- one a family-friendly restaurant and the other a 19+ lounge with rooftop deck.
once-a-month after hours evenings at the museums and art galleries (even though that's the NCC's jurisdiction not the city's).
night markets
more night festivals like the Fire & Ice exhibit...just maybe in a slightly less residential part of downtown? it was cool, I loved it, but it is kind of hard to sleep when there's a light show directly outside your bedroom window
public movie nights in the parks
night picnics
third spaces that are open, accessible, usable, and safe at night
(I'd add evening/late night library hours or events every now and again, but there soon won't be a library branch downtown anymore)
during the pandemic, the city closed a portion of Bank St on saturdays, which was really nice. some restaurants extended their patios, but the "event" was that there were no cars. it was SO nice to run errands that way. the city could do something similar one evening a week on elgin street. extend patios and have live entertainment, string up some lights and create a really inviting atmosphere.
alternatively or additionally, turn part of the Market into a pedestrian-only patio area in the evenings like they did during the pandemic. the buildings are gorgeous and often play small european villages in christmas movies.
but the patios shouldn't only be for the restaurants. give them some of the space to extend their patios for sure, but have some open tables where people can bring picnic meals and enjoy the atmosphere and entertainment even if the restaurants are cost-prohibitive. or groups of friends who can't agree on one restaurant can all go grab takeout meals of their preference and then congregate in the public picnic area.
Ottawans take patio season Very Seriously, it's a legit cultural practice. lean into improving Patio Season while creating a pseudo-third space HAS to be a winner for Ottawa's night life. it just has to be.
#some of these ideas in ottawa's current state won't happen bc it wouldn't be safe (ie parks & library)#and this probably isn't representative of what the majority of current residents of ottawa want#(although i'm sure i'm not the ONLY person who would enjoy these things)#but this it what I would have loved to have had when i lived downtown#because I had everything I needed in terms of running errands within a 3-block radius#there were tonnes of bars and restaurants of all price points and cuisines with great reputations that i could have gone to if i wanted#(allergies notwithstanding)#but there was hardly ever anything to actually ***DO***#except for the rare street festival

Canada’s PM condemns violence at Hindu temple near Toronto
Leaders of Canada’s three major federal parties have condemned the violent clashes that erupted on Sunday during a visit by Indian consulate officials to a Hindu temple in Brampton, a suburb of Toronto.
Peel Regional Police said Sunday that a protest had broken out at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, and unverified videos circulating on social media showed demonstrators holding pro-Khalistan placards, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The videos show fist fights and people hitting each other with sticks in an area adjacent to the Hindu Sabha Mandir temple, the report said.
Speaking to website X, Trudeau thanked local authorities for their swift response to protect the community and investigate the incident. Trudeau wrote on X on Monday:
The acts of violence at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton today are unacceptable. Every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely. Thank you to the Peel Regional Police for swiftly responding to protect the community and investigate this incident.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa also issued a strong statement on Monday condemning the recent attack by “anti-Indian” elements on the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton.
The incident disrupted a consular event organised jointly by the Hindu Sabha Mandir and the Indian Consulate. In a statement, the High Commission said:
We have seen violent disruption today (November 3), orchestrated by anti-India elements outside the consular camp co-organised with the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton, near Toronto.
