"LABOR GROUP PLANS CONTINUED PROTEST TO CITY AND OTTAWA," Toronto Globe. August 4, 1933. Page 9. --- Labor Representative's Inclusion on Relief Commission Urged -- RAIL WORKERS BACKED --- At last night's meeting of the Toronto District Trades and Labor Council in the Labor Temple, the delegates decided unanimously "to continue to protest" alike to Mayor Stewart and the City Council "at the non-inclusion of a representative of organized labor on the Civic Commission inquiring into relief and welfare work in Toronto," and also to the Federal Minister of Railways and Labor in Ottawa "in regard to railway workers being asked to bear an undue proportion of the load arising out of the shrinking transportation revenues on Canadian railways." Described as "Deadwood." In the latter connecton, Delegate A. Evans, Ontario Lodge, 619, Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America, drew attention to the fact that "during the depression years there have been over 23, railway workers put out of service, and the wages of those retained reduced by 1 per cent., many of whom are working part-time. A recent newspaper cartoon dealing with that situation intimated that the systems were getting rid of that much 'dead-wood." Apparently the welfare of those workers takes second place to that of the bond holders and the preferred shares. These economies may or may not have been effective, but certainly they have reduced the purchasing power of the people."
Vice-President Dan Noble supplemented that statement and declared: "The position of rail shopmen today is something like that of certain firms in Toronto, to whom Mayor Stewart referred recently, when he pointed cut that the wage-levels were deplorable that, if not raised, the Control Board might have to name them, in the light of the fact that the Welfare Department felt compelled to permit certain employees to continue to draw relief supplies, in addition to their wages. "If care is not taken," concluded delegate Noble, "the railway mechanics will be in a similar plight."
Musical Group to March. John Sutherland, of the Demon--- on the forthcoming annual Labor Day Parade, intimating that a fifty-piece band of the Musical Protective Association will march this year. In same connection, delegate Charles Bal stated: "It should be distinctly understood that this annual parade is conducted by the international trade unions of this city; that the marchers are headed by the Mayor and the civic authorities: and that we will tolerate no contact of any kind what-ever with Communist or near-Communist groups that are not native to nor will they thrive on Canadian soil."
Applause greeted this latter assertion.
Three delegates to the forthcoming Labor Congress of Canada (Windsor) are to represent the Trades Council.
The pre-delegate expenses must not exceed an aggregate of $100, and the representatives will be chosen next meeting from the following nominees: W. Genovese, J. W. Buckley,J. Noble, D. W. Kennedy, C. Locks,C. Ball. W. Dunn, J. Jenkinson, and E. E. Woollen.

For anyone who is unaware, the bill for this (H.J.Res.100) has passed the house, but NOT THE SENATE. The strike will only be illegal if the bill passes both the House and Senate (because Biden has already said he'll sign it).
If you care about this issue, please contact your Senators and ask them to vote NO when it comes before the Senate. One phone call or email usually won't sway them, however, a number of Senators are currently undecided on this, and even those who aren't may change their vote after hearing from enough people with the same opinion, especially if they represent a swing state.
#its really the only thing we can do so I say its worth doing#I think a legal strike is a better outcome#the railway unions probably agree#illegal strikes tend to come with big fines or legal consequences#labor#railroad#railway#union#railway union#railway strike

In a first for Canada, freight traffic on its two largest railways has simultaneously ground to a halt, threatening to upend supply chains trying to move forward from pandemic-related disruptions and a port strike last year. In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC) locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers after the parties failed to agree on a new contract before the midnight deadline. The impasse also affects tens of thousands of commuters in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, whose lines run on CPKC-owned tracks. Without traffic controllers to dispatch them, passenger trains cannot run on those rails. Pressure from industry groups and government to resolve the bargaining impasse has been mounting for weeks, with calls to hash out a resolution likely to ratchet up further now the work stoppage has begun.

Darlington (Chilchuck x GN!Reader)
Summary: First Meet With Chilchuck <3
If the Island Dungeon was known for one thing, it'd be danger. Then again that was the same for most Dungeons, but well...Lately, it'd gotten worse. Rumours of a Red Dragon prowling on a higher floor than usual and even the Dungeon Lord appearing higher than normal!
As a traveller to the island, you'd chosen to stay out of the dungeon. You'd be either an idiot to enter without a reliable party and most of those wouldn't take a new adventurer like you... Although, you had made a "business contact" which turned out to be a friendship. Chilchuck Tims, the head of the Half-foot union, was said contact.
The rumours you'd heard didn't paint him in a very good light, per se. Other half-foots called him greedy, demanding his pay upfront and taking union dues from members. Parties without a half-foot called him uncooperative and stubborn in terms of pricing, even if he was a skilled and tenured locksmith.
So by the time you'd met him, there was a small impression forming in the back of your mind despite your better judgment. Yet...he wasn't at all the way.
Chilchuck was mild-mannered, with a voice in an even tone and despite his race's common features, it was easy to tell he wasn't all that young. His hair was grey in places, and visible tear-throughs (wrinkles just beneath the eyes). Despite his professional demeanour, there was a sense of tiredness to him. Languished sighs and irritation at his fellow party members.
But he was kind enough to you. A bit of a smile while talking to you, or a careful piece of advice. Unlike everyone had said him to be, he seemed to have a good heart. From what you could tell, who knew, maybe it was just how professionals were on the island.
It'd been about a week since you last talked to him, his party had gone into the depths of the dungeon and not returned. It was concerning, but you weren't that close anyways...no use for your worries. A hope that he would come back safe is what you kept as you went on with your business.
Sorry this is so short! tbh I kind of forgot where I wanted to go with this </3 Buuut, promise I'll make a continuation sometime so you can get some romance content chil fandom
#for anyone wondering! the title Darlington is based off one of the first industrial railways which lead to the creation of the first unions#also this is here because I am a transport nerd <3#and as he's a beautiful union man...#if yk you know#dungeon meshi chilchuck#chilchuck tims#chilchuck tims x reader#chilchuck x reader#chilchuck delicious in dungeon

"WON'T ACCEPT CUT RAILMEN DECIDE," Toronto Star. July 4, 1933. Page 1. ---- Montreal. July 4. - The Canadian branch of the railroad employees' department of the American Federation of Labor, division No. 4. comprising 35.000 shop tradesmen, has informed the Railway Association of Canada, representing all Canadian railroads, its members have undergone enough sacrifices in point of reductions in pay, lay-offs, and reductions in working hours, and will not accept the proposed additional 10 per cent cut in basic rates, it was learned here to-day.
The workers announced their willingness to continue working for another year under the 10 per cent. cut now in force, but stressed the fact that any new wage cuts are not justified.

You like trains, I like trains, I wanna share with you a train that connects us more than one would think!
This little adorable 2' Českomoravská Kolben-Daněk locomotive, built in 1940!
One of the final locomotives built by CKD before it became BMM during the occupation.
And somehow, it made its way from Europe, to California, then over to Indiana. And when it arrived at the Hesston Steam Museum in Indiana in the 80s or 90s, they checked it over and found chalk marks on the inside of the boiler from when it was built.
It had never been steamed before!
Anyway hehe wanted to share an adorable little loco Ive seen and ridden behind
RIDDEN BEHIND?? I'M INCREDIBLY JEALOUS!! AND SUCH PRETTY LIVERY....
And it was THAT fresh? Sounds like a successful attempt at saving it from use/dismantling by the nazis, though I see that the story behind it is a complete mystery with only speculations around...still, very interesting!! :3c
#reminds me of the Siemens/Halske MillFAV* unit which i think after '89 when we parted ways with the soviet union was transferred to#the Brno museum of technology but then they decided to only keep n show czech stuff and they transferred it to the Kennebunkport#trolley museum which actually wanted to get ahold of one for a long while#as far as i know though its not yet operational#*MillFAV(and many other spellings) is kind of a catch-all name for the old and 'new' units on M1 of Budapest though the one#i mentioned has a nick: Old lady!#and one still operates on nostalgia events! theres also 2 displayed at Deák Ferenc tér in the underground railway museum#Postaláda#mutuals#trains

Union members at CN and CPKC railways have voted to reauthorize strikes at both companies if negotiated settlements can’t be reached.
Teamsters Canada said in a statement Saturday that union members at both railways voted almost 99 per cent in favour of reauthorized strike action.
The union said members previously voted in favour of strike action on May 1, but the 60-day time limit on the vote expired.
It said that meant it had to take the “unusual step” of holding a second strike vote.
