Movies watched in 2024
Monolith (2022, Australia)
Director: Matt Vesely
Writer: Lucy Campbell
Mini-review:
Monolith is pretty different from what I expected, but it's still a solid, low-budget sci-fi offering. The central mystery kept me hooked, even if it didn't give me any easy answers, and Lily Sullivan's committed performance elevates the material and carries the movie when it threatens to buckle under its own weight. It also tries to touch on some social issues here and there, but it never ventures too far into that direction, choosing to focus instead on the main character's descent into obsession. It won't enter my favorite sci-fi movies list, but it definitely helped me pass the time.

Erin Reed at Erin In The Morning:
On Wednesday, viral posts on Facebook and Twitter falsely identified a transgender person as Trump’s shooter. These posts, shared by right-wing disinformation accounts, gained millions of views and were amplified by major far-right figures. The individual in the image has now come forward, stating she is not the shooter. This incident is the latest in a series of attempts to falsely claim a shooter is transgender by using the picture of a random trans person from social media. The major source on Twitter for the image appears to be Paul Hookem, a right-wing disinformation account. According to the account’s profile, it was previously banned for four years before being reinstated by Elon Musk. In a post by the account, the transgender woman’s picture was used along with the caption, "Anyone wondering why they aren't using this photo of the shooter?" The image of the person bore little resemblance to the shooter. The post received 7 million views, with many quote tweets gaining additional millions of views.
Now, the person depicted in the photograph has come forward in an exclusive interview with Erin In The Morning. Her name is Rose, and she learned about her picture going viral after a friend alerted her to a now-deleted Facebook post. Rose was alarmed to see her image, stating, “I’m just an artist, I enjoy drawing and writing, and occasionally playing video games. I’m literally the most average random person…” This is not the first time mass shooters have been incorrectly identified as transgender by right-wing accounts. In the Uvalde shooting, an unrelated transgender woman’s pictures went viral and were shared by major right-wing influencers and sitting United States representatives. Fact checks later corrected the disinformation: the person depicted in the photos was Sam, a transgender woman who lives in Georgia. In Texas, a megachurch shooter was also incorrectly identified as transgender. Similarly, right-wing influencers like Libs of TikTok and sitting congresspeople shared the disinformation before it was fact-checked.
The far-right disinformation machine is playing their “trans shooter hoax” games by baselessly insinuating that a trans woman was the shooter who tried to assassinate Donald Trump. The trans woman in question spoke to Erin Reed to debunk the far-right disinformation machine’s “trans shooter hoax” propaganda.
In reality, the shooter who tried to assassinate Trump was a cisgender male by the name of Thomas Matthew Crooks.

From Matt Haig´s instagram
Anyone who has followed me over the decades knows my thoughts on book snobbery. (It’s narrow-mindedness masquerading as superiority.) But just when it looked like it was waning and the internet seemed to be a force for good, the reverse is happening. Book snobbery is rising again. And now people don’t just disparage books they don’t like but the readers that read them. As a writer of thirty books that have had different reactions I have quite a unique insight into this. For instance, I once wrote a book called The Possession of Mr Cave which no-one read, had endorsements from highbrow writers and the London Review of Books and was nominated for a prestigious prize. I have also written The Midnight Library, which has found many readers and nice reviews but has also been called ‘the death of literature’ by one vlogger and ‘the worst book ever written’ by another. It has even - according to Slate magazine - started a new genre for people to be snobby about, called ‘therapy lit’. (It’s just a story. And a better one than The Possession of Mr Cave.) Anyway, that’s not the problem. People liking and not liking books makes life interesting. There are books I love and books I too like to think are the death of the literature. It’s cool. Less cool is the new element of attacking readers. Snobbery is not taste. Taste is what you like and don’t like. Snobbery is thinking that what you like makes you better than others. It used to be solely sexism. That is why the Brontës and George Eliot pretended to be men. Post Virginia Woolf and modernism it became subtle. Books mirrored class. High, middle, low. Difficult = good. Easy = bad. Sexism remains. Chick lit derision becomes BookTok derision. If movies can be fun why not books?Story is harder than style, anyway. Books aren’t members clubs. Books are keys to other worlds. The very act of turning a page feels like opening a door. Snobbery is the enemy of that. This is personal to me. I used to be a book snob. I did a Masters in English where I was taught that difficulty equalled value. Then I became ill and all I could read was The House at Pooh Corner. I still think that is the best book ever written.
