Yk… I was just enjoying my morning in the arcane tag on TikTok when I stumbled onto this:
Tumblr media
Ok Firstly: UUUHHHGGG 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
Now that That’s out of the way.
Vi’s practically the Antithesis of a “Mary-Sue”. I bet the person saw Vi as “female who punches stuff and is badass therefore Must be a Mary-Sue” and put no deeper thought into it.
A “Mary-Sue” is unrealistically perfect and has no flaws, and to be honest that’s why a lot of people don’t like them. They see them as poorly written “author insert”’s a lot of the time. HOWEVER, the Point of Arcane was to show that EVERYONE is morally gray in some form or another (like I could make a college level essay on each of the characters and what makes them morally gray in their own way). There is no character where you could realistically say “they are perfect heroes! no flaws whatsoever!” (Realistically the closest person Id give that to might be Ekko but everyone else…)
However if I Am going to be honest for a quick moment, Vi is clearly based on the “basic hero” archetype which the creators expanded upon to explore such archetypes. Much like how they did with Jinx and the “manic pixie dream girl” archetype. But even Then that’s not what a Mary-Sue is. A Mary-Sue lacks any Meaningful flaw, and Vi’s FULL of them, it’s what makes her character so Interesting to the viewer. Vi’s whole story Hinges on the fact that she Can’t be perfect. Hell one of the First things the show shows us is her leading the others to steal from Piltover, which lands them in trouble with Enforcers (albeit accidentally however things not going to plan is something that should be planned for). And Vi is someone who’s Incredibly stubborn, something we see throughout the Entire season. In fact we see her making quite a few selfish decisions through the season as well. For example, her teaming up with Jayce had nothing to do with “Making the Undercity better” it was solely “I’M pissed at Silco, YOU’RE pissed at Silco. so let’s go over and destroy his shit.”
Like Maybe this was just a poor choice of words on the creators part and they just don’t fully understand what a Mary Sue is, or it’s a completely misogynistic take and they just see Vi as “female who punches stuff” (this is from a Reddit post after all…)
TLDR: Vi isn’t a Mary-Sue, please do your research on what these words mean before making takes like this. And now, I’m going to have a nap 😴

I am actually so serious I think it really messes with a childs creativity and joy to tell them to never make a mary sue OC. Like that unbridaled form of joy where you make a self insert OC who super cool and everyone loves them and they have every superpower in the world SHOULD be something a kid makes, it nourishes their ability to create things for fun and not be stifled by "oh but what if my character is too overpowered and cringey...". whatever

how mary-sue got her groove back
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've never really played Mary-Sue, because it just seemed so easy to keep her tied down. I added the secondary aspiration of Pleasure, moved her to katatty's downtown, and because she had no job, I just had her socialize. She really seemed to get along with the Infallibly Good Witch that she met at Cold Issue Clothing, so I ran with it. He invited her out on the town, she reconnected with her creative side, and now she makes bank as a musician.

This is petty fandom salt, BUT... I've been chewing on this phenomenon that I've been calling "Fandom's Darling". It is related to things like "Author's Darling" and "Mary Sue / Gary Stu" and "Protagonist Halo" and all that jazz, where one character gains a peculiar narrative weight in a story.
"Author's Darling" is when a writer has a favorite character, and the world and all other characters sort of get... warped to put the Darling in the spotlight. It's most noticeable in TV shows with multiple writers, when a character you personally like suddenly has their previous characterization destroyed to make another character look good somehow. Every other character might become weirdly incompetent. The Darling's feelings are treated as The Most Important Feelings in any given situation. The logic of the fictional world seems broken past suspension of disbelief in order to validate this one character's beliefs or skillset or some other fantasy. And so on.
"Fandom's Darling" is what I've been calling the pattern where a fandom essentially crowns a New Protagonist for their fanfiction stories (it's often a side character rather than the original protagonist, but it can also happen to protagonists). This character becomes the self-insert for all sorts of indulgent fantasies, gaining special powers or backstories, and/or becoming the focus of extreme whump, and/or hooking up with all the various hotties, starring in all sorts of tropey AUs, and so on. They're not always an obvious Mary Sue version of themselves, but the character's original personality and interpersonal relationships tend to get warped or dropped completely, and other characters tend to become a little flat around them. I call it "Fandom's Darling" because it's not just one self-indulgent fantasy fic (you do you! Have fun!) with characterization choices that I don't vibe with (I have neither the time nor the desire nor the authority to police anything, I am just venting), but rather a prolific mini-fandom of sorts revolving around this empty doll / fanon version of the chosen vessel character, so it becomes a little unavoidable.
I am salty about this (mildly frustrated) (imagine a soft sigh of disappointment before I just go do something else) because you are FUCKED if you actually liked the canonical version of this character and their interpersonal relationships. It's almost worse than liking an obscure character that no one cares about. There's about a thousand fics starring your fave, but maybe only about a dozen of them are actually rooted in any kind of recognisable canon.

Is the power of Mary-Sue an inherently bad guy power?
Okay, let me explain. I know that the Mary-Sue is usually on the side of good, but I got to thinking about something; if a Mary-Sue was the villain, would care quite so much that they seem to have these near reality bending powers?
How often have you seen the big-bad evil guy seemingly pull a fast one at the last minute in order to one-up the good guys? Just a complete, out of nowhere act that justs forces a story into overtime? Have some secret, unknown ability, artifact or trinket that seems to the point of breaking immersion?
Ongoing villains are notorious for this. Carmen Sandiego did more unbelievable things and escaped in more unfathomable ways. Have a mini helicopter that can turn into a rocket to escape the aircraft of the law? We would slam a Mary-Sue for having such a hairbrained device, but Carmen Sandiego? Oh yeah, perfect sense.
Dr Claw from Inspector Gadget? You'd expect someone of that level of wanted would so easily get detained. (Inspector Gadget isn't a Mary-Sue, just a cyborg Maxwell Smart (yes, that's the reference), the bumbling fool with near Mary-Sue powers, but their wacky hijinks makes up for it.)
How many times has a bad guy pulled a fast one to escape capture, death or worse, through seemingly near impossible means, but we don't care they're doing it, just so long as they get defeated in the end.
And I think that's it. As writers, we want our heros to overcome obstacles and it can't be overcome too easily or quickly, as that spoils the fun. (First act defeats are rarely permanent and are often either deliberate acts by the bad guy for some larger plan, or just a plot set-up for someone else to break them out.) The heros need their big bad evil to fight against, or else we're just watching them take down some ne'er-do-well and then get back to their boring life between these sporatic bursts of activity. Do you want to know how the main character folds their laundry? Not after the epic robot fight.
The size and scale of a hero is directly proportional to the obstacles they have to overcome. If the villian isn't gifted the powers of the Mary-Sue, then they may be overcome too quickly and the heros won't be as legendary as we want them to be. This is, seemingly ironically, why Mary-Sue heros suck so much. If the villian has no real threat, then the hero doesnt seem that amazing; the Mary-Sue problem in a nutshell.
So don't throw out your Mary-Sue characters; cast them as the villians and see what your non-Mary-Sue heros need to do to defeat them.

To answer the right question for people Ginger highly referenced my art. It doesn’t matter if she had a video if you add them up perfectly, you can see she highly referenced it. I’m ashamed she would do this and try to get away with it she’s not the only person she’s ripped off from as well. She’s ripped off from wintermoonlilies too.

Gideon Nav casually climbing twenty-two (22!!!) flights of stairs to get to the landing field in chapter 1 is yet more evidence that her legs are actually very strong, thank you very much, BUT it is also very funny to imagine her sweating and wheezing hands on her knees dizzy whole body burning thinking what if instead of escaping the Ninth she simply laid down and died

CALIENTE + LOTHARIO = BEAKER When Don got a date with the Caliente sisters, he thought he won a jackpot. What he did not expect, though, was to wake up next morning on an operation table in their basement. Will this test subject last or the sisters will have to look for a replacement soon?
GOTH = SPECTER Turns out not only relatives are buried in local oligarch's graveyard. Ever since Mortimer's wife Bella mysteriously disappeared, he became more reclusive than he already was. She was not the only victim - all of his daughter Cassandra's fiancés seemed to disappear one by one. Will Alexander get used to living with ghosts? Can Cassandra ever find love again?
BROKE + DREAMER = GRUNT Brandi and Darren found comfort in each other after a terrible tragedy struck their families, however it seems this comfort is about to crumble. Darren is determined to reach the stars someday, and Brandi would rather stay close to the ground. Will Dustin and Dirk ever get along? Will little Beau follow his stepfather's footsteps?
PLEASANT = SMITH
Daniel has been fascinated with space ever since his father's Mars expedition hit the news. Good thing he found a woman whose eyes reflect the beauty of the universe itself. Will Mary-Sue get her long-awaited promotion, and can Angela and Lilith make the right choices when it comes to love?
BURB = CURIOUS Jennifer is interested in the vastness of universe, but for a different reason her brother is. Where is she from? What really happened on her father's Mars expedition? Was it anything like the experience her husband went through during his abduction? Maybe the answer is much closer than she thinks.

Will Herb realize that the result of his last mission as a Pollination Technician is somewhere nearby? okayyyy i had so much fun making this. the idea hit me literally yesteday and i was on the rideee hope u enjoy ^_^
