Sunset on the Sunset Route A westbound train on the former Southern Pacific between Owl and Colfred, Arizona. It was built in 1880. Prior to that, this land was inhabited by the Yavapai Apache, O'odham Jewed, Maricopa, Cocopah, and Hia-Ced O'odham peoples. The mountains one sees in the background here are located within the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range, established in 1941.

A Maricopa County Correctional Officer was arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison system.

Sheriff Paul Penzone announced the arrest of Officer Andres Salazar at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. Nearly 100 pills that tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl were found on Salazar, who works at Lower Buckeye Jail, according to Penzone. Maricopa County detention officer accused of smuggling drugshttps://t.co/1gdnu5FRBT@AP — AZ Capitol Times (@AzCapitolTimes) January 11, 2023 Salazar was convicted of possessing or using narcotics, promoting contraband in prison, and transporting it for sale. Penzone says the theft charges were added because the officer allegedly forged overtime sheets.

Investigations:

Salazar has been with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office since October 2019. He has been under investigation for more than a month, Penzone said. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had a lawyer who could speak for him. Penzone said the officer's actions were particularly "enormous" due to the risk of exposure to fentanyl by other officers or detainees. The sheriff also announced that his office is considering using body scanners to keep drugs out of jail. The scanners looked for foreign objects on every entrance: law enforcement officers, other personnel and detainees. They would be paid for by savings from the current budget. Read the full article

Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman actor, denounced her sister’s campaign for a competitive seat in the Arizona House, telling Mother Jones on Friday that she wouldn’t support her for any elected position.

The actor’s statement was included as part of Mother Jones’ exposé on her sister, Pamela Carter, the far-right Republican running to represent part of Maricopa County in the Arizona House of Representatives.

“On her website, Pam claims to have her ‘family’s full support,’” Lynda Carter told Mother Jones. “I have known Pam my entire life, which is why I sadly cannot endorse her for this or any public office.”

Pamela Carter did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment. Her platform includes being opposed to same-sex marriage, abortion in nearly all cases and transgender inclusion in sports. She supports arming teachers.

Lynda Carter, a vocal supporter of reproductive rights, also offered her support to the Democrats running against her sister in Arizona’s Legislative District 4.

“As a native Arizonan, I am proud to endorse Kelli Butler and Karen Gresham to represent LD4 in Arizona’s State House,” she told Mother Jones. “Kelli and Karen are both strong, experienced candidates, born and raised in Arizona. They are working mothers fighting for the rights that matter most to Arizonans, especially every child’s right to a quality education.”
