This was my contribution to the year of seasonal mixes, which started with the Winter Chill series. Where the first series was about ambient and beat free mixes, Chilled Spring was about transitioning from that to something that felt a bit more upbeat, just as moving from Winter to Spring does.

This mix wasn't initially meant to be a guest mix for anyone, it was just a mix that I did for fun, but I shared it and was asked by Simon Cox at Saturo Sounds if they could use it for one of their shows, which I was happy for them to do.

One of the things I'm enjoying about this process of updating the blog with older mixes is that I'm listening to them as I go and rediscovering some of the tunes I've used through the years. I've got a huge library of music, in both physical and digital format, so it's really easy to lose track of things and forget what's there through the course of time. There's some great house tracks on here, and that is something else I'm finding, a fresh enjoyment for some genres I've listened to less in the last few years. Not that I lost my love of house, but it's nice to reacquaint myself.

The title came from a post I saw on social media of someone that had lots of cool and interesting tattoos, 'Vide Cor Meum' was one of them and it was done in a really nice, ornate font, which caught my eye. When I looked it up I learned that it meant 'See My Heart'. It stuck in my mind and pairing it with music and a photo of my turntable seemed like a good match.

For a more complete back story to this mix, you can find out via Winter Chill 1. I put this particular mix together as a back up mix, just in case any of the contributors to the Winter Chill series didn't pull through and there would be a gap in the programming for the radio show that was hosting them. As it turned out, everyone showed when they needed to and this mix went unused. Unfortunate really because I really enjoy it. The idea wasn't to be a strictly ambient mix, it was that it needed to be 'beat free', so I tried to be a little wider ranging with the genres used. Even though this wasn't used on the radio, and although it doesn't matter hugely, it was nice that this mix got the Number 1 in the weekly chart on Hearthis.

Just as an FYI... The word 'Peractio' is latin and it means 'completion' or 'the last act'. That seemed fitting given there had been 10 Winter Chill mixes throughout the course of the Winter months. The image is a photo taken by me on near Braemar, on Royal Deeside on my way to Edinburgh. It was snowy, cold and atmospheric, so it also was a good fit for the project.

This mix was one that I put together for Simon Cox (who I had as a guest on my Different Strokes show on Box Frequency FM). He had some heavy involvement in the early days of Saturo Sounds, I'm not sure if he had 'a show' as such, but more that he helped get other involved and providing content for the station. I'm also not sure if he's still involved with them, I did have a dig around their site and socials but didn't see any mention of him, so perhaps not.

Anyway, this was aired in late December, 2015 on a Sunday morning. I will try and add some of the tracklist, or at least what I can figure out of the top of my head. If I remember, I'll try come back to it and see if I can make it more complete.

This mix is from December 2015 and is just an off the cuff mix; one of those hit record and see what happens. One unique thing about this mix is that is was given a play by Bill Brewster, the man who is not only a well established DJ but  co-authored 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' and also the long running website DJHistory.com. He's also a man who hails from the town of Grimsby, a town I've had a genuine affection for since I was young as I have family that live there and I spent many a summer holiday there. Having said all that, I don't know how much he listened to, whether he loved / hated / felt indifferent about it. I'm just going to pretend he loved it and keep the feather in my cap! I don't think I've had any other well know listeners, though I guess you never know!

There is a bit of a back story to this Winter Chill mix, which developed into a series that grew arms and legs. This initial mix came about off the back of a comment that I made on my personal Facebook page (when I had one), where I said something along the lines of wanting to do a purely ambient mix, something I had not done before. I'd been picking up the odd ambient record, or there were tracks I was enjoying on compilations, or b-sides of records and within artist albums, but it wasn't a genre I'd spent a lot of time in at this point. Andy Pye, the man behind Balearic Social, posted a reply on my post suggesting that if I did one, he would like to do a second part and that he'd air the mixes on his Balearic Social radio show. We agreed the mixes should be entirely beat free and I set about digging through my collection. A short time later, Matthew Foord suggested he'd also love to join in and do the same, and before we knew another seven people followed. 

So, a series of weekly ambient mixes was born during the Winter of 2015 in to 2016. Towards the end of the winter series, someone suggested we carry it on and do seasonal mixes throughout the year and at the end of the year I suggested doing a Back To Mine type run, and that also grew into a year long series. At the time I thought it was great, I enjoyed being a part of something and really put a lot of effort into things, especially when posting everyone's mixes to the blog, making sure the artwork was consistent, that tracklists were accurate (they often were not), sourcing links to the tracks like I do with my own mixes and writing a little about those who were taking part, plugging their own projects and socials etc. It's time consuming. I don't think any of that really mattered to the majority that were taking part, but to me it mattered. I think most were just excited at being on Purple Radio, which I think was the station the B.S show was hosted on. Gradually, over the course of the year, my involvement / input was sidelined by one or two people who seemed to just assume control of things and I just felt a bit disappointed come the end of it. I'm not sure disappointed is the right word, I'm not sure what is, but considering how it started and the time and effort I'd put in, I did feel quite flat about it and I think it added to me feeling like I shouldn't really engage on Facebook, or involve myself in projects with lots of other people in the music world; it's rarely straight forward or easy in my experience.

Anyway, that's a bit of the back story. I'm only going to be posting my own mixes on here. If you can find them, the Faction mix was a particular favourite, as are a lot of his mixes, and worth hunting down.

Back to the sounds of funky and disco tinged house for this mix from 2015. It's another of those 'On Vacation' mixes, you can check the previous 'On Vacation' posts for an understanding of where these came about. The image for this one was taken on the West coast of Tenerife, which away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist hot spots is an island I love… especially during the winter months!

This mix was from around 2015, though I'm not 100% certain on that, it won't be far off. I had been asked to provide a mix for a radio station, and when I submitted it to them they decided they didn't want to use it. I'm not sure why, no explanation was given. I actually really loved the flow of this mix myself, so it was a bit of a kick in the teeth. Not to mention that life had been really starting to get on top of me around the same time, and I'm not sure it's ever really got back on track from here (or a year or two before) to be truthful.

Anyway, the title comes from a combination of the mix being rejected and how I felt more generally. I thought an abstract photo of my face, taken after a long night dealing with care issues at the hospital would be a perfect accompaniment, though looking back perhaps not. I don't dislike the concept enough to change it though because it does reflect a period of my life and that's no bad thing to document in my own way. Somewhat ironically, though these things don't matter to me at all, this mix reached number 1 on the weekly chart on Hearthis.

I think this mix was from around 2015, and as the title suggests it was the tale end of Summer. This was an off the cuff mix, I had taken my controller with me on a weekend break to a house near Beauly in Inverness-shire, a stones throw from where I used to live; would it be a double entendre to say it was where I also used to "live"? Anyway, I digress. It's a beautiful part of the world and it was a laid back evening with a beer and chilled out tunes. The image is the sun rising over the Beauly firth, the view from the house and the photo doesn't do justice to it. 

It's fair to say that when I listen back to mixes of my own, I pick out the mistakes, the tunes I might not like as much now or the mixes where I think the flow isn't right. I have some where I think 'this one's not too bad actually', and this is one of those.

Network was a show that was similar to the Down The Rabbit Hole concept, in that a few DJ's had a show on weekly rotation and each would host a guest alongside a mix of their own. On this occasion I was sharing the platform with Matthew Foord, one of the most genuine and friendly people I've encountered through the hellscape that is the online universe. One of only a couple of people that have kept in touch with me, not only is he a great person, but also a fantastic selector and it's worth having a rummage around on his Mixcloud or the Box Frequency archives that are hosted on Hearthis... there's a lot of quality and a few big names on there!

For my own part, I tried to pick tracks that might compliment the person I was appearing aside, not always but mostly, and certainly in this case. Matthew's musical taste is very eclectic, and mine has become more so over the years. I think my involvement with Box Frequency and the amount of time listening to the various contributors opened me up to a lot of things I wouldn't have come across otherwise. For that I thank them all, though my bank balance does not.

I think this one is from the tail end of "summer" of 2015. Really, it was just an urge to have a wee mix and is one of those 'hit record and see what happens' moments, using the Traktor controller which was still very new to me. The title was plucked from thin air, based on the fact it had been a very wet summer and the image was as simple as point my phone at the window and pressing 'click'. There's really no back story, but that's the back story.

I can't really remember when this mix was made, I think around 2015. What I can say is that it was my first time ever using a controller and software, in this case a Traktor Kontrol S4 and the Traktor software that comes with it. Hence the name and the cover image… Traktor = tractor > house music…. Traktor In The House.

It was a case of just hitting record and seeing what came out and this was that. I didn't write down the tracklist as I was recording, but I've filled it out as best I can.

This mix is around 10 years old now and there's no real back story to it.

As with the other 'Off The Cuff' mixes, it's exactly that... an impromptu mix, normally after a few libations, not something that happens very often.

Some of the mixing is terrible, but they were just me having a little fun and  the tunes are good regardless of transitions. I'm The Baddest Bitch is undoubtedly an all time classic but the Johnick vs First Choice track is a particular long time favourite of mine after hearing it in a Daft Punk Essential Mix, a mix that I haven't been able to find online, despite numerous attempts through the years. Back in 2014 I was invited to put together a monthly show on Box Frequency FM. I was so excited and happy to have the platform to do something and Different Strokes was born. I spent time creating jingles and getting in touch with some people I'd formed relationships with through the Soundcloud community and via this blog, mainly with my weekly feature Soundcloud Sunday, where I'd post the highlights of music I'd found during the previous week. So everyone I was getting in touch with were people who were putting things out that I genuinely loved, whether it be original tracks, edits or dj mixes.

I had 3 hours each month to fill, give or take, so I thought splitting the show into two mixes was the best way to go, one from a guest and one from myself, and to this day I still can't believe the calibre of guests I was able to share a platform with, including, of course, Softmore from my previous guest slot on Down The Rabbit Hole. 

One thing I did really want to try and do with this show was to bring a mix of styles and genres, and first up to the plate was dl, aka David Latte. David had been a regular to appear on my blog with his excellent edits, including one of Minnie Riperton's track 'Reasons' which he gave a gentle extension to, just for me to share here. If there's one person I've met through this, I would most like to be let loose in Davids record collection, I've had a flavour of what's in there from chatting, from his edits and mixes he's put out.

Unfortunately the show only ran for 6 months. I had a lot of ideas and people lined up that I wanted to bring in, but it was at this point where dealing with my Mum, her care, housing, health, divorce, my Sister and lots more besides started to become overwhelming and I didn't have the energy or time to devote to the project. It's something I wish I could turn the clock back on because I really lost focus on my own needs and life and doing this really gave me something to look forward to. We live and learn.

I have actually thought (many times) about bringing this back. Not necessarily for radio, maybe just through the blog, but I've really lost the vast majority of connections I had made and it seems like people have moved on from DJ mixes, blogs, radio shows etc. Everything seems much more limited and condensed into smaller pockets of the online world; spotify, tik tok, 1 minutes attention spans, viral video, dances and music that are forgotten about in a flash. I thing so much has been lost and devalued; perhaps I'm just getting old.

Anyway, back to the music. Part 1 from dL is a mix of hip hop, funk and soul. Part 2 from myself is a bit of slo-mo house and edits.
