Are there recurring tropes in Maribat fics that annoy you?

Not too much, really? I mean, I feel like the class trip fics are a little too repetitive, but I also don't get too annoyed reading them because I'm always trying to see how others wrote it differently.

HOWEVER:

I am actually in the process of writing a Daminette fic that centers all the Maribat tropes, but... I am twisting all the tropes upside down on their heads >:D

Tam’s Sub Secretary

Tam Fox wanted a brake, a small vacation, just a week. A week was all she wanted, but how was she supposed to have that if she was worried over Tim?

Tam had complained to her cousin in France, they were quick to recommend the best of the best. Marinette Dupain-Cheng, regular and executive secretary and assistant of The Audrey Bourgious, and a personal designer on the women’s team.

She was considered a standard in the business world, intern for her at 16, and her secretary by 17. Each year taking on more roles and making a team to help her balance out the load, to work with her was heaven despite Audrey being right behind her. The Style Queen Fashion House and Magazine had never been smoother nor popular.

Tam thought it too good to be true, to have the MDC temporally take over her position just so she could have a short vacation. She tried to say she couldn't do that to her, but her cousin insisted she could have a schedule set up for the company for the time she was off as she had in the past. All Tam had to do was come up with instructions and details that Marinette would need to know.

So there Tam was in front of Marinette Dupain-Cheng, explaining last-minute details she forgot to include.

“This is your email as my sub, any emails sent to me will automatically forward to you,” Tam explained, “and-”

“I understand Mademoiselle Fox, I assure you I have it under control. If Monsieur Drake needs me to cover for him I will. Go and enjoy your vacation,” Marinette soothingly stated.

Tam had one of the most peaceful weeks she had in possibly years. When she came back Tim had charged her wide eyes and grabbed her by the shoulders, “Where did you get her?”

Who is the cousin? My first thought was Alya, then I thought Max.

Some thoughts

As someone whose both into Maribat (even if I haven't been as involved lately) and BatPham/DPxDC its hilarious that people have come to the conclusion that yes;

The Bats are definitely getting involved with these tired teen heroes that just so happen to have black hair and blue eyes and totally Wayne Adoption Bait TM

Both end up needing the Bats' help because of the whole World's Greatest Detective shtick regardless of the premise (Anti-Ecto Laws and Uncovering Hawkmoth's ID)

If we're going to the Shit's Already Hit the Fan Route then both parties have concluded that the best place to lay low was definitely the crime capital of America; Gotham City

(Even if they do so they try to stay under the Bats radar because of his no metas allowed rule (thats fanon btw) even if neither actually qualifies as metahuman (magic and a medical condition really)

Jason definitely has something going on because of the Pit that can be cured/treated by means of magic or ghost shit

Constantine is probably involved or is getting dragged into this mess whether he wants to or not

(If involved Captain Marvel probably has passing knowledge about the GZ or Miraculous)

Both Danny and Marinette being smol and no one expects them to be Stronk

Same duo also has been thrusted into unwanted responsibilities apart from the whole Teen Hero thing at 14 (Mari's age is unfortunately still up in the air but I'm pretty sure that's her age during the origins eps, thanks Astruc)

(Speaking of pretty sure both fandoms disregard what the showrunners/creators say about the show also but thats besides the point)

(Ghost King Danny (fanon but v good idea) and Grand Guardian Marinette (canon unfortunately for her because sure why not give this girl more anxiety))

Government is corrupt and is probably the reason why these kids get no help from experienced heroes

I just find this all hilarious looking into it

Also the fact im like 75% sure that both group may have gotten hate from the main DC fandom because the crossovers were seeping into their tags too

There's something about Marinette turning into a thief stealing lost miraculous that's just so captivating, you know? Because you have a character that's kind, dedicated her teenager ages to save people and suffered due to that, who then had to turned into a thief to avoid people going through the same she did before then...

You just have a flashy hero who everyone knew about turning into a fugitive who tries to never be seen, who hides into the shadows. Her motivations are the same, she's still the same kind girl who everyone loved, and that would do anything to protect people, but instead of a beloved superheroine, she's a wanted thief who everyone hates...

Talon!Adrien AU

Another common Maribat trope I see is Marinette having ties to the League of Assassins, have it be biologically or through marriage.

Thus, I raise you this Adribat prompt: AU where Emelie & Gabriel are members of the Court of Owls. Wanting to gain more influence, they offer Adrien away as a Talon.

When Nightwing ventures to Paris to ensure the last of the Court was disbanded, the last thing he expected to find was a blonde kid with black veins & glowing green eyes camping in the catacombs.

Dick, holding Adrien like a stray kitten: Can we keep im'? I promise he doesn't bite.

LB: YES HE DOES.

May I offer another deconstruction of a Maribat trope? More specifically the one where a Batboy comes to Dupont, immediately hits it off with Mari & helps expose/ruin everyone and they live happily ever after!

You can't tell me they wouldn't take (1) look at Gabe & immediately have him as a prime suspect. Thus, maybe Tim, Jason, Dick or Damian goes for 'study overseas' & Gabriel graciously offer to let them stay with him for the business connections.

Cue them also immediately picking up on the rancid vibes of Lila, Bustier, Damocles BUT ALSO Marinette bcz surprise! They know how to spot a stalker! They also know how to remain objective & actually investigate. They point out to Adrien that the high road approach is wrong but still take into account that (1) his upbringing conditioned him to be passive & (2) Mari didn't tell him abt the threats and from what they've seen, Adrien definitely would've have let that slide.

And no, they don't bring Mari into the fold bcz they overheard her complaining to Alya abt Adrien's sudden divergence from the private schedule she somehow got her hands on? How she was going to sabotage a random girl for winking at Adrien teasingly?? How they're gonna have a family & hamsters??? And how she expects everyone to listen to her bcz she's their 'Everyday LB'???

Yeah, no. And if they find out she's the actual LB, still NO.

Bcz they see how much of a mess everything is. How she keeps CN out of the loop, expecting him to be the distraction, the goofy sidekick & meatshield. How that applies to the rest of her 'team' who aren't given consistent training. How she makes herself the lynchpin for everything.

More importantly, they see how underutilized CN is. So they take him under their wing in & out of the mask. Experimenting with his Cataclysm & enhanced senses, showing him the darker nitty-gritty places where the downtrodden go to be forgotten, how to act instead of react & assert himself in ways that matter. CN gains popularity as others note how proactive he is in stopping pettier crimes outside of akumas, how he takes the trouble to visit past victims & lend them an ear, etc.

How he & the other vigilante work even better than him & LB.

Naturally, she throws a fit, thinking they're trying to 'undermine' her. Nevermind that they've made more progress in the past month than she ever did in almost 2 years. When she tries to demand CN hand over his miraculous, he refuses, done with her bossiness, & she declares him a 'traitor'.

Cue Mari getting a restraining order & more blogs pointing out the unfair power dynamic of the hero duo. In the end, HM isn't even defeated with a bang but a whimper as CN & the Batboy knock Gabe out before he transforms, send evidence to the police and leave. LB is now left alone to explain to Paris what happened & deal with the fact that they now think she's either incompetent or a glory hound who purposely didn't do her job to milk the attention while Marinette is ALSO blamed for the fallout at Dupont bcz she's as complicit as the rest of them.

CN & Adrien disappear from Paris and maybe the Teen Titans gain a new member. One who's treated as an equal, a friend & after a while, family.

(Idk, for some reason, him joining the Titans sounds more plausible than the Batfam. Thoughts?)

I definetely think the Titans would be a better group for Adrien in terms of social growth because of the variety of people in that group, but the Batfamily is definetely a close second. It doesn't hurt that he's the closest thing to a Batfamily character outside of the costume (we'll just say that he's Selina's nephew ;) )

Constanstine starts acting sober on important missions/meetings for the JLD; he has a sanity-potion dealer

Zatanna reports this odd behavior to Batman, they interrogate him when his veins are swamped with alcohol.

C: … I-I know what yer doin’ [hiccups]

Z: We care for your well-being. You have bouts of sobriety that you seem to have control over.

B: Are you on something new?

C: M’yeah… is called a pwoz—piss—poise! Poise potion, yeah das it!

B: And who makes this “Poise” potion?

C: My dealah, my busniz. G’way! [stumbles out the door]

Z: … That went as well as expected.

Sober Constantine is actually more reasonable. Batman catches him after a meeting.

B: [observes his brushed hair and very high-quality, new trench coat] You’re sober… Congratulations?

C: Uhuh. Did you need something? I have some business elsewhere.

B: With your dealer?

C: [affronted] Wha—Who in their right bloody mind would dare call Celest that?

B: You did.

C: ….

B: Who’s Celest?

C: Oh, fuck me!

Constantine gives him an address - it’s in Milan, Lombardy (Region of Italy). He specifically instructs him to come as a civ along with Red Hood and Robin with the threat that he will erase their memories if they so much as go into detective mode.

Bruce Wayne and his two wayward children enters the teahouse and is led by the hostess to a private room. They are served with tea and light snacks that they know even Alfred would more than approve of.

A door opens - they didn’t even know it was one with the way the molding blends into each other seamlessly. And out came one of the most enchanting woman Bruce has ever seen. He’s seen his fair share of attractive females but he has never been star-struck like he should be - as if he were back to his pre-pubescent days.

M: Constantine said you’d be here.

B: [realizes that this person was Constantine’s dealer and was 100% magic] You’re his dealer?

*Jason and Damian who saw the look on their dad’s face snicker at his opening line*

M: [raises and elegant eyebrow at Bruce] And you must be his work associates?

J: Something like that, lady. I’m Jason, kid’s Damian, and the one who can’t stop staring at you is our Dad, Bruce.

*Bruce grumbles and Marinette smirks*

M: I’m Marinette. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

D: [gestures at Bruce] Pleasure is all his, Marinette.

B: [red at the ears] Their Grandfather thought them better, I swear.

M: Mhmm. I guess he didn’t teach them how to not die then?

The guys: ….

Jason gets a more potent version of the potion Constantine consumes - it’s a prescription that he has to come for every month. Damian gets a charm; ear cuffs because he does whatever her wants, a spontaneous orbital piercing is nothing. And Bruce gets Mari’s number.

(Tim also gets forwarded in his fave fashion label’s waitlist from the near thousands to the fourteenth - his first consultation coincides with Jason’s next appointment.)

AN: Some posts/fics call Mari Celestial Guardian. Idk where and when that happened - I have abandoned canon a long time ago. These are all pulled from my days in the maribat blackhole (still kinda stuck there). I basically pulled this out of my archives so they at least get the chance to see the daylight.

Addressing Brucinette: I have a whole re-written MLB plot in my archives where everything is more brutal and the miraculous aren’t actual pieces of accessories. Like there’s an initiation to the order and stuff like that. I normally don’t enjoy aging up characters in crossovers but Brucinette just works. I have a secretary AU somewhere (it’s tragic and I’m considering scrapping it if I find it). And I also have deep-rooted issues that wants me to write Good!Dad Bruce who has Mari breathing down his neck when he so much as raises his voice at his children (Muminette/Mominette is another breed scary). And those tropes where Mari sees right through Brucie? Has a second sense for the when the batkids are in/causes trouble? Love those. I WILL FIGHT FOR THIS SHIP. (Jk people are free to dislike this. I get it.)

The Alya Salt trend tends to prop up some pretty racist tropes. It makes Maribat fic nigh unreadable once you notice.

Tag Team Tournament 2024 - Tournament Top Dogs

All of our players this year were brilliant, dedicated, and creative, but some of them went above and beyond in the name of friendly competition.

The player who wrote the most words for our Tournament was @otome-wandering. You're incapable of short fics and we love you for that. Otome wrote 76,045 words in fanfic alone, plus two bullet fics on top of that. Wow. Color us impressed.

Of course, the bulk of that word count came from one submission in particular, which won our coveted High Score award!

Anyone in the Maribat Server knows that after briefly handing the lead to Book Design, @otome-wandering decided (with a little peer pressure) to grace us with the first seven chapters of Heirs, a 66k work of epic proportions that plays with all of your favorite Daminette tropes. This work also happened to be posted on Double Points Day, though Otome hadn't checked our blog to see that announcement until after submitting it, and thus earned a whopping 197 points for Art Couple.

This submission couldn't have won the Tournament alone though, which is why we also have to thank those players who just kept coming back to submit again and again.

With seven submissions each, it's no wonder that @tree-reads, @velveteenshadow, and @olivia-anderson-fanfic all won this award in addition to the MVP positions. Nice job to all of you for coming back again and again!

Last, but certainly not least, we have to shine a light on those of you who ensure that we have creators in the Maribat Fandom.

Maribat Menagerie Medallions

To specify, this would be community run. All the categories would be suggested by those here on Tumblr and on our Discord via a google form. This would be open from November 1st through November 15th.

Medallions would be any sort of fun or unique nomination. These can be tropes, rare pairs, bio-parents, and/or AUs. They would also include a section for underrated pieces and creators to show appreciation there.

Once the medallion ideas are collected, another form would be released from November 16th-November 23rd. This would be for fandom lovers to rate every suggestion on if they would like it to be included in the final version.

Finally, fandom lovers would be given from November 24th-December 8th to submit pieces for the medallions then all of those will be reviewed and voting would be from December 9th-December 31st. The reviewing process will be done by a group of volunteers to balance it so mods can also nominate.

Note: All date ranges are approximate and will be finalized if there is enough interest in the medallions.

So, I used to be apart of the Maribat/ Mlb x DC crossover fandom years back. And now I'm in the DC x DP fandom.

And let me tell you, my experiences between the two crossover fandoms could not have been any more different. These fandoms are literally on the opposite ends of the spectrum of DC crossover fics.

Here are my observations:

DC x DP (Danny Phantom)

Very Sweet. There's not a lot of hate for any of the characters most of the time.

Less romance, more found family + growing friendships

A whole lot less flanderisation of certain characters' personalities (in a way that's not overwhelming)

MLB (Miraculous Ladybug) x DC

Salt. Salt EVERYWHERE. There's so much salt it's dehydrating to read especially if you're a fan of certain characters. If you're an Adrien or an Alya fan, proceed with some caution, some fics don't tag who they're bashing/salting on. You could be reading a fic that you assume has Adrien & Marinette being wholesome friends but then get slapped with Adrien being an ooc spineless jerk/pervert to Marinette.

More romance oriented. Not to say there isn't found family because there certainly is but maribat definitely leans more into romance.

In certain salt fics, the characters are seriously flanderised to the point they're not even recognisable anymore. Adrien is the main victim of this along with Alya. Like some of y'all did Alya DIRTY. Adrien still got the worst of it though. And on the DC side of things, Damian is a little too sweet.

They do have one thing for certain in common when it comes to fics and that is that the Justice League had no clue that these teen superheroes are literally carrying a world-sized burden on their shoulders with no to very little adult guidance in their lives and honestly: my fave trope EVER! Mlb x DC fandom, continue to beat up Green Lantern for ignoring LB's calls for help. That shit is delicious.

I got a lot of criticisms for Maribat fics, especially on AO3. Authors please, for the love of all things Fandom, TAG WHO YOU'RE BASHING.

I used to like Adrien/Alya bashing fics back then but I've given them a lot of thought, especially since I began thinking about Adrien/Alya's characterisation and personalities and how some of these fics really butcher the characters. Which then just made me fall out of love with Maribat. The Fandom is too salty for me. Its unhealthy to have that much salt content in your system guys.

Anyway, just some observations and some criticisms I wanted to talk about regarding these two very different yet quite similar DC crossover fandoms.

To the Danny Phantom guys, keep doing what you're doing, you guys are amazing <3

To the Miraculous Ladybug guys, TAG YOUR SHIT

A while ago, some Justice League fans on Twitter who were complaining about some Maribat tropes, and they actually used pre-existing stories to come up with a kinda funny explanation for the “Justice League is banned from France” trope that, whether they realized it or not, sounds like something the show would have happen in an episode.

A running gag in Justice League Europe is that the Parisians disliked the JLE. So the fans on Twitter suggested that the reason for the ban should be something extreme petty, with the idea given being “Wally eating all the Happy Meals and some politician's kids not getting to have one”.

Like, I can totally see the show doing something like that with a 3-6 year old Chloe. And since she would’ve been 3-6 years old, none of the blame can really be pinned on her.
