A New Wave of Maribat

So, there has been talk for some time about how Maribat as a fandom is dying, or at least, people within the fandom can feel that it is not as lively as it could be.

Pondering the question, what if, a rather peculiar idea arrived. There are plenty of places on Tumblr with blogs dedicated to Maribat. Ao3 is a rather popular for content as well. However, is there not another place that people frequent quite often that could give the fandom new attention?

The answer is simple. Instagram

Now, you might be saying, "seriously? Instagram? No one goes on Instagram for Maribat."

That is exactly the point. Tumblr takeovers can be effective and gain attention, that's for sure, but why not try a different route? Instagram is a place where people share irl things yet within it is an incredible world of artists and storytellers.

Instagram could provide what the Maribat needs. A new light. People could discover this fandom for the first time in a place no one would expect.

Below is going to be information about this page for those that are intrigued by this idea, it will also allow those who do not wish to hear more the ability to continue on their scrolling.

There are a couple ways to bring Maribat to Instagram and Maribat Media is here to help with it.

Creators can either make their own Instagrams or use their existing ones to post content. Any sort of Maribat content is amazing. Get it out there for the world to see.

Understandably, not everyone is going to want to make an account or post on Instagram. Why go through the effort if you don't use the platform. Valid.

Maribat Media is here to help. We encourage people to help promote others' works across platform to get them the attention they deserve. Any piece of artwork, writing or art form, takes a lot of time and energy. @ this account in the replies of a piece shared here on tumblr and we will get in shared, only under the following conditions.

This needs to be made absurdly clear. Maribat Media will not cross post a piece of content solely by being tagged. When tagged, the creator of the post will be reached out to see if they would like their piece to be shown off on the Instagram. No means no and the creator will not be pressured to allow their piece to be published. That is rude and the exact opposite of what the admin hope to accomplish.

The best thing to do if you want a post to be placed on the Instagram is ask the creator themselves within a reply to their piece about if Maribat Media can post it. It saves all parties time, and you can easily @ this account when the creator's written permission is present.

That also goes for creators themselves! If you have a post you want to have put on Instagram but do not have an account yourself, @ Maribat Media with a request to and the admin will gladly see to it!

Events can also be requested for sharing! It is highly encouraged to have event runners who want their events to be seen to either @ or leave a request. Events are an amazing way to gain traction.

Any and All sorts of content that have been given permission to post with have proper crediting. Within the top of the description and in an extra slide of the post (unless there is not a slide available).

Ask Me Anything is always open for any questions surrounding this whole Instagram thing as well the comments to this very post. You can leave requests for content sharing in the AMA (the process will be the same as if @'d in a reply).

Finally, this is all one big attempt at trying something new. There is no knowing if this will work at all. However, there is no harm in trying. Perhaps we can give this fandom new light together.

Events of all kinds The server features an event exploration forum for members to suggest events. Events are run to give a spotlight to the rarities of Maribat. Event suggestions with high engagement are given a chance to be run through the Menagerie. (Considering limitations)

Member Contributions Emotes are left to the members to design and decide on. Server banner (if unlocked) is also left to the members. Creations of rarities that come from the incredible minds of members.

In Server Features A menagerie of themes. Main ones are Rocks/Gems and Zoos. Forums for brainstorming, other fandom focus, personal interests, artwork and crossovers. Authors channels with a combined theme of gems and animals. Ping roles to join in on sprinting (focused, timed writing) and beta reading. An in-server Miracle Box of roles to collect by completing certain tasks. This also has its own channel/role focused on it.

Server Environment Positive, motivational space. One of the main goals is to foster an environment where members can help each other create the pieces they have been wanting to. Fresh, but ready to flourish

How would you handle a crossover between Miraculous Ladybug and DC/Batman?

pic tangentially related To be completely honest—I'm not sure, since I'm not super familiar with the DC sphere lol! I think in order for any good crossover to justify itself, there needs to be a lot of active communication between each piece's magic systems/lore/etc. (Does anyone in Gotham have a miraculous? Are they common? Does The Order have history in Gotham? Does the Justice League have history with The Order? etc etc.) Otherwise, the premise will just feel like characters are being transplanted into another piece of media rather than a genuine crossover. I played with the idea a little in the pieces I drafted for The Miraculous Chat Noir, but I feel like there's definitely a lot of room for minor miraculouses to be used by antagonists for non-Wish-related ends. Crime lords, oligarchs and what have you. In fact, since it's been established that the main miraculouses we see in the show are the most powerful ones, I'd love to see how objectively weaker miraculouses can still be used in creative ways to demonstrate a threat to the main duo! But if I have to specifically use only Marinette and have to make her specifically interact with Batman and the batfam, as is convention for Maribat, then I'd use Sillynette and basically do what I showed above! I doubt she'd be allowed to have the Ladybug where the Cat can't go, so we're taking it away from her. Luckily, she will more than make up for it with incredible violence. She uses her creativity for maiming goons now... what a win for feminism...

🖤 Proportion of Crossover fics

At the time of posting, Crossover Fics accounted for 13% of the total fanfics on Ao3 (9177 works) (Fig 1A). They were predominantly featured in Batman All Media Types (5097 works) or DCU (1034 works), accounting for 68% of all crossover fics (Fig 1D). The majority of the works were rated for General (39%) or Teen Audiences (39%) (Fig 1B).

To see changes in crossover fics in the ML fandom over time, I have tracked the number of crossovers posted to Ao3 per year.

Data was filtered by the date the fic was last posted, between 01 Jan - 31 Dec for each year.

Note that older fics may get updated, this data is only a reflection of the fandom at one moment in time. This analysis was performed 06 Jan 2024.

Note that I have followed the Ao3 definition of a slash representing romantic relationships and & indicates platonic relationships.

Marinette got through the first few days of living in her apartment with relative ease. She ordered a bunch of furniture on express delivery and spent a day just putting it together. Then she went out and found her local grocery store and filled her fridge, freezer and cupboards with food she knew she would be able to eat, even when exhausted. After that, she spent a couple of days designing and emailing clients that she had officially set up her base in America.

And through all of this, the nagging sensation in her gut continued. It intensified the morning she went to a coffee shop a little further away from her apartment while checking out local businesses that were hiring. The thought of working at the coffee shop part time went through her mind but was dismissed when it didn't feel right.

Fate seemed to intervene as she was paying for her coffee. The guy behind her was getting into a fierce debate with his friend about whether or not Jagged Stone’s designer really had relocated to the US or not. The first guy - older, sounding a little exasperated and looking like he'd rather be discussing anything else - was sure that the designer was still living in France and a commission was nothing but a pipe dream. The second guy - early twenties, cute and passionate - was adamant that Jagged's cryptic social media announcement meant that she was not only stateside, but in Gotham. 

She stifled a grin as she stood back from the counter and waited for her drink. She debated whether she should say something the entire time she was waiting but settled on acting oblivious when her name was called and waiting for their order to finish so she could drop her card next to it. Who knew? Maybe this was the opportunity she was being nudged toward.

If it was, she was going to be having words with fate because it was definitely doing things in the worst way possible. She managed to slip her card between the men's drinks as she reached past then to grab her own but then her sleeve caught on the lid of the second. In seconds the drink had fallen and spilled both of the other drinks.

“Oh no,” she said, horrified. Coffee went everywhere and she desperately tried to set the cup right and detach her sleeve. She felt herself going bright red as the men stared at her and she apologised profusely. Why did this keep happening to her when she needed to seem professional?

Finally she was free of the cup but it was too late. Everyone in the café was staring at her as she paid for two new drinks for the gentlemen. They seemed to brush off the awkwardness and assured her that they didn't mind waiting a little longer for fresh ones to be made.

“I'm Bruce, and this is Tim,” the older man said as she cleaned up their side of the counter. “Bad luck with spilling the coffee, you didn't hurt yourself, did you?”

“Oh, no, just made a giant mess and embarrassed myself,” she muttered, flushing again when the cute one snorted. “It's my own fault, I should have taken my drink when she called it the first time.”

“Why didn't you?” Tim asked, eyeing her. 

“I was trying to be clever,” she admitted, pulling a new card out of her purse and handing it to them. She watched as Tim's eyes widened and allowed herself to grin at them both. “I normally keep it pretty quiet but since you were both arguing about it, I thought I could just leave my card with your drinks.”

“Oh my God, so I was right?” Tim asked excitedly, clutching tightly to her card. “This is amazing! Bruce, this means I can finally get an MDC original! You have no idea what this means to me, I've been looking for you for the last two years!”

“We should sit down and discuss designs sometime then,” she said with another bright smile before checking the time and realising she still needed to check out places to get steady income. “Well, I have to go, but message me and we'll work something out, okay?”

And with that she grabbed her drink and headed back out into the dreary Gotham weather to job hunt.

The more Tim looked into Marinette Dupain-Cheng, the more she seemed too good to be true. She graduated top of her class at lycée, was the class president from her last year of collége and apparently ran a tremendously successful business as MDC. The only thing that he could find that maybe made her seem less perfect was an expulsion that was reversed in her last year of collége - but with some digging, he found that even that spoke to her credit because the girl who had had her expelled had ended up being the second Hawkmoth!

It was concerning and intriguing. When looking into her background he also saw that she had never been akumatised. Not even all of the Miraculous Team could boast that! So was it because she was a positive person, or because she was working with either of the villains? 

He wondered whether he was just being paranoid - it was certainly something others had commented on - or if it was something he should be following up on. It was a fine line to balance but, truth be told, he was a bat. Bats did the research, they planned for any outcome and they stayed alive because of it. The previous Robin hadn't and he…well

Anyway, clearly his only option was to foster a friendship with the woman and investigate her from there. And if that meant he would be in possession of an exclusive MDC original, well…

Picking up the business card, he started a message.

Across the city, in her apartment, Marinette was working on a small piece for Alya when her phone lit up with an incoming message. She finished the seam she was on before opening her phone and smiling as she read it.

Hi there, this is Tim from the coffee shop. If you're still interested in meeting for a consultation, I have an office at Wayne Enterprises and would be happy to organise something soon. Let me know if there are any dates or times that aren't suitable.

She grinned as she wrote back, stomach no longer tied up in anticipation. Tim and Bruce were definitely the people she was supposed to meet. Now it all depends on whether it was a professional opportunity or…something more.

One of the best quotes to come out of the talks in this server:

"All fandoms are gonna have negative aspects, it's impossible not to, but I believe a fandom can show it's strength by those that replace that darkness of negativity with a strong light of positivity. It's the flame of passion that burns brighter than the black ashes of hatred"

Those are words I standby, yes that quote is of my own, but even if it wasn't I would. There is also a cheesy but fitting quote from the Lorax. This fandom is one of my favorites and I know there are amazing people in it so I think we can improve if others join in on bettering things.

Do you think the Maribat fandom has any problems?

Of course it does. All fandoms have their own issues. It’s to be expected really.

But that doesn’t automatically mean the fandom is “bad”.

There are bound to be toxic people in the fandom, that’s just life. But it be such a waste to only focus on them.

Rather, within our server, we like to focus on how to better the fandom and make it more inclusive, improve events, focus on small creators rather than give all the attention to big names, and give our members a voice.

So maybe the fandom does have problems, but we work to fix them and create a place that allows you to escape from them and fix them.

“How long are you going to keep it a secret?” Jason asks, taking a seat in the corner alongside the figure. “As long as I can,” they stare down at their hot chocolate. “I want Ladybug to keep the positivity she has. Look at how happy she is. I cannot reintroduce her into it all and have her possibly remember.” “You cannot control if she remembers. You need help. If there is a miraculous problem, you need to get the earrings back, Adrien.” Jason places his hand on the other’s. Adrien pulls his hand back from the touch. He spares a look to Marinette and Tim as he stands. He hands Jason money. “I can figure this out without it. Keep using Plagg’s miraculous where you can. If that can stay balanced, I can work around it.” Before Jason can say anything, he leaves. Marinette skips over to Jason, placing her arm on his shoulder. She studies his face. “Who was that? They seemed nice.” “A past memory is all.” Jason sighs as he leads Marinette back to Tim. Now was not the time to tell her. That time will never happen if Adrien could help it.

Notes: This started as just an acoustic poem of "The Author Prefers Hot Choccy" but then I felt the potential calling to me. I had to end on to the end. The false sense of comfort and perfection can be one of the harshest things to face when the truth is revealed.

Rare Pairs and Poly Ships are an overlooked part of the Maribat fandom, so this is an amazing opportunity for Bugbats to try their hands at something new.

Welcome to Maribat Menagerie's 1st Event! Malachite Milestones

Malachite Milestones runs through the entirety of June. It is focused on rare pairs and poly ships!

How does it work?

Malachite Milestones works in 3 waves. Each wave is to properly gauge what ships Maribatters would like to see in the event. They will also have their own posts as they commence.

Wave 1:

The ship suggestion form is released. This form explains the specifics within. Any and all ships that you want to see potentially featured in the event must be suggested here.

This form will be open from May 22nd - May 27th, 11:00am EST.

Wave 2:

The previous wave 1 form closes, and all of the suggestions are compiled into another form. This form is the ship selection form where Maribatters will choose from the lists which ships to feature in the event.

This form opens May 27th, 12:00pm EST - May 31st, 9:00pm EST.

Wave 3:

This wave is the true start to the event.

Wave 2's form closes, then the top ships voted for in each section will be determined. These ships are the ones featured in this year's event.

The ships featured in the event are dubbed the 'Active Roster'.

The Active Roster gets revealed on June 1st. Afterwards, creators are free to run while in order to hit milestones.

What are the Milestones and Rules?

The rules of the event are fairly straight forward.

Every submission must be through Ao3.

Every submission needs to be sent through the submissions form in order to count toward the points.

If anyone would like to still create for the event without it going towards points, please feel free to do so! The 1st wildcard is earned via the ship who receives the most pieces via this method.

All pieces will be reblogged (Tumblr) or shared on stories (Instagram), as well as included in the submission tracker to give proper recognition to the work.

Milestones:

The way the milestones work is that every fic (or submission) gets a point. Afterwards the following chart is awarded as a ship hits that many submissions.

5 Submissions = 3 Points

10 Submissions = 5 Points

15 Submissions = 7 Points

20 Submissions = 10 Points

25 Submissions = 15 Points

30 Submissions = 17 Points

35 Submissions = 20 Points

After 35 submissions, the points awarded per milestone remain a mystery until a ship achieves that threshold. For further explanation, check the google doc for the event at the bottom of this post.

What are the aforementioned 'sections' of ships?

Brilliant question! In order to give a wide variety of rare pairs and poly ships, three sections have been created.

Garnet Guardians:

Garnet ships are those 2-member ships that are ‘popular’ or would come to mind by the average Maribatter.

There will be 5 ships in the roster.

Rhodonite Ravagers:

Rhodonite ships are all other 2-member ships in Maribat. 

These ships can be anything so long as it is DC Character/Miraculous Character. Ships from one parent fandom are amazing, but not the focus of this event.

There will be 7 ships in the roster.

Alexandrite Avengers:

Alexandrite ships are 3 or more member ships aka poly ships.

There will be 5 ships in the roster.

Is there any sort of prize or incentive for winning?

Absolutely! There are two main reasons for participating as well as trying to get a ship to win.

Firstly, the top ship of each section will get its own channel within the discord!

To help other ships still have a chance at a channel, 2 wildcards are implied through the event. These will be announced through a tumblr post as well as added to the doc. Wildcard 1 is featured above under the rules.

Secondly, someone has graciously offered to draw for the event!

The drawing will be of the ship that has the most points overall by the end.

It is not something that is won by one person or for one person specifically. Please do not expect it to be.

Final Thoughts

This event in its first year running so if anything goes weird or funky, please feel free to politely point those things that are confusing.

One maribat fanfic I read has Guy Gardner be the guy who answers the call and thinking it a prank, dismisses it completely. That one also had a magical media ban centered around Paris along with warnings to tourists about HM. I think another had Diana declaring it a Miraculous problem that can only be handled by the Miraculous group

God fucking damn it Guy Gardner.

One nitpick that I have about the Danganronpa Another fandom is how many people mischaracterize Utsuro and Akane's complicated relationship, especially on Utsuro's side.

Like, one side of the mischaracterization writes Utsuro like he was Damian Wanye in a MariBat fic, and the other side writes him as such an abusive asshole towards Akane (Who is written as a flawless victim to be shipped with someone else) that it makes me hard to believe that that version of him would would do the entire thing of "Giving the Divine Luck to save her life at the end of the Proto Killing Game" that happened at the credits of DRA.

Like, can someone care to write them as the beautiful dumpster fire of manipulation, blind devotion, and twisted, but genuine, care that their relationship truly is?

One of the best parts of Danganronpa Another is how amazingly toxic and destructive Utsuro’s and Akane’s relationship is. As it boggles the mind on how these two both care for each other greatly, but at the same time constantly fuck each other over, to the point it becomes an art form.

I don’t think I’ve seen such a paradoxical relationship in anything else in media, and unfortunately because of how unique it is, it means a lot of people tend to misunderstand on what it means.

From Utsuro’s POV you have understand aside from distant memories when his parents weren’t corrupted by his power, he has spend a life of being exploited by others. Even the other Children of Utsuro, wound up misusing his gifts for personal gain which he’s jaded him greatly, and the fact so many people seek him out for greedy purposes. Coupled this with the fact Utsuro never has to work or grow for anything since Divine Luck does everything for him, and it’s little wonder he becomes a hollow shell.

And then he meets Akane Taira, the only Child of Utsuro who to his knowledge took his blessings and used them for good as she became a maid to serve and help others. And the fact Utsuro is the reason Akane even has a life to begin with means she’s totally devoted to him. However since Utsuro isn’t used to a positive interaction, or someone who just wants to be with him for no selfish ulterior motives means he doesn’t really know how to process it. This is why he constantly tests Akane’s faith in him, and why he doesn’t seem surprised when she does turn on him in Chapter 6, because in his eyes, Akane was never gonna be loyal in the first place. And that paranoid part of his mind was never gonna quieten down.

At the same time though, there’s no denying that his existence was a rather lonely one, so having someone by his side is better than nothing. So he does enjoy Akane’s company, and the fact he gave his Divine Luck to her to save her life, is proof that he did genuinely care for Akane. I do think that had Junko not come along and do as she always does and that is make things worse, eventually Utsuro would have learnt to let go of his paranoia and be more trusting of Akane. And maybe at the same time Akane might learn to not take Utsuro’s viewpoint all the time, and that he himself has flaws as well. The fact that she’s the only one who knows of Utsuro’s past though is proof he does have some element of trust in her. Heck and Despair to Future Arc suggests this, she might even known what his real name is because no one will call their child Utsuro.

After all if you had one spot of happiness in your life, you would fight tooth and nail to make sure it’s always there. The dynamics are way more complex than that. Most people don’t tend to think critically, and as such when presented with a complicated and four dimensional relationship like Utsuro’s and Akane’s is, it’s very easy to misinterpret it.
