GUTS! GUTS! GUTS!

This is the first blog post for GUTS! GUTS is a graffiti and punk inspired short film set to premiere at the 2025 Maine Mayhem film festival. This project takes inspiration from movies such as Good Time, After Hours, and Repo Man to create a truly unique and surreal project.

Quick Summary:

Guts starts a graffiti project with his friend that quickly turns sour once their spot gets busted. This leads him on an day long trek with many out of the ordinary encounters. This includes an eccentric trip to a dealers apartment, a scuffle with local skaters, accidentally drugging himself with stolen LSD, and crashing a “house party”. Can Guts get back and finish the graffiti, or will his actions get in the way?

Who we are:

Guts is being directed by Max Noyes, and produced by Emerson Dolan and Ashton Everett. Each post will be made by one of us and signed at the bottom so you know who is posting. This is currently being posted by Max so I will write a little intro about myself.

The Director:

Hello, I'm Max. A Maine native who has been passionate about working in film since I can remember. I have been attending SMCC for two and a half years now and am just finishing up with this project. It has been an exciting past few years and lots of growth has happened in the area of filmmaking. I am very passionate about music, movies, and video games. Speaking about music...

PUNK!

This film is inspired by the punk genre and community. I have been a punk fan for a few years now and am excited to be working on an original soundtrack with my good friend and producer Sam Orlando. The soundtrack is inspired by 80's punk and hardcore mixed with some hip-hop elements. I think that this music adds a natural drive to the movie that will keep the audience on their toes.

Hello, Everyone!

I'd like to welcome you to the Were-Man blog! Here, we will be chronicling the trials and tribulations of making our short film! But first, a little about the story:

“Were-man” is a horror-comedy about a jaded private investigator, David, and Buddy, a seemingly abandoned dog he encounters on his evening walk home. After taking Buddy home for the night with the intent to bring him to animal control in the morning, David soon discovers that Buddy is a Were-man – a dog that transforms into a regular man under the light of the full moon. Will they discover the whereabouts of Buddy’s owner, and will they solve the mystery of… The Were-man?

...Sounds interesting, right?

Anyway, we're still in the early stages, but I hope you'll follow along with our progress!

Here is the office No Accounting For Taste poster!!! I had so much fun making it! I made it entirely out of craft construction paper and then brought it into photoshop to finish it off. I'm really happy with how it came out 😁😎🥹 I was really going for a Saul Bass, 60s/70s drama feel. Or like a pulp fiction novel from that time. Anyways, can't wait for premiere time!!

For years, David was haunted by a wisp taking the form of a skeleton.

When he was very young, he couldn’t put to words what he was seeing. He’d squeeze his teary eyes shut and turn away in horror, the little vocabulary he possessed locked behind his clenched teeth.

Always present for these spells, Gabe would urge him to speak, the soft rumble of his voice cracking with worry. But David never could.

As he grew older, he became almost accustomed to the wisp’s presence around his dad. Fear’s tight hand would still snake around David’s neck, but the ghastly sight no longer sent him spiraling. So long as he looked away, he could maintain his composure.

It wasn’t until David was thirteen that he was able to look at the wisp for more than a second.

David was sick. Really sick. It was something working through him so quickly that the healers could barely keep up. He’d been in Dahlia’s Hospital for Empowered Youth for almost a week, sinking in and out of a delirious consciousness.

On the sixth day, his fever broke. The unsettling chill of his sweat roused him. He blinked blearily against the light of early morning that was trickling in through the window and painting the room indigo.

Pain flashed in his throat as he tried to swallow. Desperate for something to drink, he shifted his aching head to the right, then to the left.

Gabe was sitting beside him, slouched over in a small plastic chair. One of his arms was propped on the arm rest, his hand covering his face. David couldn’t tell if he was awake or not.

He almost called out for him, but was cut short when he noticed the bony hand on Gabe’s shoulder.

David’s eyes flicked up and, for once, he didn’t have the strength to look away.

In the first moment, he saw what he always had in every glimpse prior—a silver skeletal specter. But as he continued to stare, David realized what he was actually seeing:

Whispers of hair clung to the top of her head. The sharp angles of her face were covered with a thin layer of skin, stretched tight over the bone. And her eyes, sunk deep into their sockets, were cast downward as she gazed at Gabe.

Despite her sickly appearance, she looked familiar, like a dream. Like a faded senior portrait tucked inside a wallet. Like an out-of-focus face in a home video. Like a tender smile floating in his memory.

His lower lip began to tremble. She’d been there the whole time, all those years? David raised his hand with as much strength as he could find.

“Mom?”

She didn’t look towards him, but Gabe’s head shot up at the sound of his son’s weak whisper.

“Oh thank goodness,” he breathed in relief, grasping David’s outstretched hand, believing he was reaching for him.

David blinked and the wisp was gone, her afterimage rapidly fading from his vision.

He wanted to tell his dad what he had seen—what he’d been seeing most of his life—but he couldn’t. Though this time, it wasn’t for lack of words or the halting effects of fear.

David didn’t know why, having no knowledge of wisps, but the unrelenting dread in his stomach told him to not tell anyone, especially Gabe. Somehow he knew that if he did, bad things would follow. David chose to protect him.

The final time he saw the wisp was a few weeks before Gabe died. Sometimes David thinks that maybe if he had known then, he would have tried to talk to her, or finally tell his dad.

But Gabe died never knowing.

Or maybe he did. Gabe sometimes caught David’s gaze lingering just to the side of him, his eyes wistful and haunted. David could tell he was curious but Gabe never said anything. Perhaps he understood what was going on and also knew better than to ask.

Ultimately, David didn’t know what Gabe had known. David didn’t know if the figure was really his mom or some figment of his imagination or some sort of projected grief from Gabe.

The only thing David knew was this: once his dad was gone, the visions of his mom were gone too.

Naddpod Patreon is literally priceless. Listening to them talk about a hypothetical psychological thriller movie about a guy who thinks he's getting sucked off by a rat through a hole in the wall. 20 minutes in and they've hardly talked about the actual episode at all.

GUTS Update 1

Hi all,

We are back with our first update! GUTS is now four weeks out from its film date and we are rolling along. We are 90% the way to our funding goal. That is amazing! I can't thank the community, family, and friends enough for all the support!

Location update:

We got our biggest location signed as of Monday! This is our location for the graffiti spot and we are very thankful to the Falmouth park and rec program for letting us use the location for the duration of filming. They were extremely kind and easy to deal with, very good people.

Soundtrack Work:

The soundtrack is being worked on by Sam Orlando and myself (Max Noyes). This soundtrack is heavily inspired by the genres of punk, hardcore, rap/hip-hop, and experimental. The soundtrack is a vital piece to the movie and has been in the works since the greenlight. Over this past week, Sam and I reworked a previously made track to include my vocals rather than a placeholder sample. This track uses vocals that are completely freestyled and it brings an emphatic energy to the track. Sam is a wonderful and creative person and a huge behind the scenes reason to why this movie is the way it is. Below I've added the track, which Sam did the production and guitar on. Vocals done by me. Check it out! (Not Mixed Yet, just a sneak peak)

Big Shoutout

Another week is down as we head towards the end of production. We only have one planned day of filming left before we wrap. We are all very excited and looking forward to post-production.  

There have been a few hiccups along the way but the same is true with any great film. Fingers crossed things go smoothly. That being said I am proud to have made it this far. To be honest none of it would have been possible without the amazing people working with us on set. 

Shoutout to everyone who has given their time to help us solve the mystery of the Were-Man. That is how films like this are made. So when I talk about being proud, I am talking about us and everyone who has worked to make this film possible. Thanks so much from me and the Were-Man team.
