On November 4th 1864 Robert Stodart Lorimer was born.
The son of a law professor, Lorimer was educated in Edinburgh, but left university before graduating in 1884, to join the office of the Scottish Revivalist architect Robert Rowand Anderson. In 1889, he moved to London, where a spell working for G. F. Bodley helped shape his Gothic style and fired him with enthusiasm for the Arts-and- Crafts Movement. Here, he developed his commitment to the unity of art and nature in architecture, and his delight in materials and the richness of textiles and colour. Among his friends in London were young architect Walter Tapper and fellow Scottish architects J. J. Stevenson and James MacLaren. After the latter’s untimely death, Lorimer worked for his successors, Dunn and Watson, their influence left a strong impression on Lorimer, as seen in his roughcast cottages at Colinton, and other small houses in the Lothians of the 1890.
His first big commission, from 1891, was the restoration of Earlshall in Fife. In reviving this tower house as the atmospheric setting for R. W. Mackenzie’s collections, Lorimer was greatly influenced by his boyhood experiences at Kellie Castle, which his father had sensitively repaired as a summer home. At Earlshall, Lorimer designed fittings, furniture and a garden inspired by that at Edzell, all in harmony with the spirit of the old house.
He went on to do many more tactful restorations, his favourite being Balmanno, Perthshire (1921), with furniture and an elaborate compartmented garden also to his design. Lorimer’s earliest new houses were English (such as the Lutyens-like High Barn at Godalming), and in Scotland, too, early works such as Wayside in St Andrews (1901) absorbed English influences. But, in 1903, he started work on Rowallan in Ayrshire, the first of three country houses that gave full expression to his love of the Picturesque forms and romantic qualities of 16th-century Scottish architecture. Ardkinglas (1906) and Formakin in Renfrewshire (1914) followed, the architecture of the latter echoed by its outstanding group of ancillary buildings, which incorporate playful carved monkeys and humorous inscriptions. Lorimer’s gate lodges were his ‘happiest inventions,’ wrote Hussey.
As seen in the pics, the twin-turreted gate lodges at Formakin are characteristic, with their ogee roofs echoed by the garden pavilion, another favourite structure of Lorimer’s.
By 1919, Lorimer had been appointed an official architect to the Imperial War Graves Commission, and in this capacity designed over 300 memorials in villages, towns, and schools in Scotland and England as well as cemeteries in Greece, Macedonia, Italy and Egypt. The largest, and perhaps the best known of these commissions, was the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle.
My favourite memorial designed by Lorimer is the one in Paisley, which looks more like a memorial to the old style wars during the struggle for Independence, and reminds me of Pilkington's statue of The Bruce at Bannockburn, it depicts soldiers from the western front accompanied by a medieval knight on horseback and having noticed he did some work with Pilkington I can see where the influences came from.
It wasn’t all simple designs for Lorimer, one of his most famous work was the Thistle Chapel in St Giles, Edinburgh, the other pic is a memorial to Lorimer, also in St Giles.
Sir Robert Lorimer died at 12 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh in 1929. He was cremated at the newly opened Warriston Crematorium and his ashes were thereafter buried with his parents at Newburn in rural south-east Fife, close to the family home of Kellie Castle. The grave (which he had designed himself at the death of his father) lies in the extreme south-west corner of this tiny and very remote churchyard, overlooking rural Fife towards the Firth of Forth, as seen in the last two photos.

June 11th, 1939 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt and King George VI at St. James Episcopal Church in Hyde Park, New York.
Two of my favourite photos of Bertie - just LOOK at that shy, goofy grin in the first photo... and his perfect hair :')
During the British Royal visit to America in 1939, King George VI and President Roosevelt enjoyed each others' company as if they were old friends. After a long, late night of intense but diplomatic discussion, Roosevelt patted the King’s knee and said, “Young man, it’s time for you to go to bed.” George VI set off towards his bedroom, but before settling down to sleep, mentioned to the Canadian Prime Minister, Mackenzie King, how impressed he was with Roosevelt, who was "like a father," giving him “his most careful and wise advice.”

Hello! Happy Valentines day! I love your blog, and I’m wondering if you have recs for books with really solid friendships for the heroines? I’m rereading the wallflowers rn (my first historical series i ever read!) and I’m just delighted by how much the four of them like each other, and also how they get to do kinda silly stupid stuff together bc friends DO encourage each other to be deranged sometimes lmao
Yes! (And thank you.)
Offbeat rec, but I really love the way Lucia and Regin love each other in IAD--specifically Pleasure of a Dark Prince (Lucia's book) but in general. They're *technically* sisters, as all valkyries are, but they're really best friends and so ride or die for each other. When Lucia is like "I need to go on the run so my werewolf fated mate can't find me" Regin is all "I'm ON IT" and goes with her and helps her like, push Garreth down a ravine and attempt to crush him with cars. It's great.
The Mating Habits of Scoundrels by Vivienne Lorret has great, funny friendships. The girls are really supportive of each other, but they're also like... encouraging one another's worst fears. I think Wallflowers fans would really like this series--my favorites are The Wrong Marquess, How to Steal a Scoundrel's Heart, and Never Seduce a Duke.
Oooh The Fifth Avenue Rebels by Joanna Shupe has fabulous friendships. This is definitely a "friends encourage friends to go goblin mode" series, especially on Nellie's part. Nellie is like, always steering Maddy to cheat on her fiancee with Archer (to be fair, Nellie had.... a conflict of interest there, but she was Right) and taking Katherine to French balls to go hook up with masked men and stuff. And in her book especially, I think you really see how much she adores her friends, and how much she feels that "everyone is getting married and growing up and moving on without me" thing, which leads to a lovely friendship moment between all four.
Hell's Belles by Sarah MacLean OBVIOUSLY has an amazing girl gang that encourages women's wrongs.
Grace Callaway's Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series by Grace Callaway has a group of crazy young vigilante girls, led by a much calmer, but secretly insane, Lady Charlotte. I just love how these girls will be like "LET'S KICK FLIP VILLAINS AND KISS BOYS".
Jennifer Ashley's first four Mackenzie books especially have really lovely, supportive friendships between the Mackenzie brides. Beth and Isabella are probably the closest, but they're all really tight and understanding of one another.
Adriana Herrera's Las Leonas series is only two books in thus far, but I've been LOVING the female friendships in that series. The women really GET each other, and I super enjoy the fact that there is like... an acknowledged bonding that goes beyond them being women in the 19th century, and goes into them being woc in a predominantly white European society especially.
And for books that have great friendships between men and women, I looove Frannie's relationships with the Scoundrels of St. James, especially Jack. Like, all these guys are a little in love with her (Jack least for sure because he actually gets that their love is platonic lol), but it's pretty quickly clear that it's like, this trauma bond situation where they actually just really GET each other and where they're coming from. So it's not like, objectifying in any way and she's more like the heart of the group, while also being great at forging things and such as that lmao.

Snowflake Book Review’s
Title: Dublin Falls' Archangel's Warriors MC #14 Capone's Wild Thing
Author: Ciara St. James
Pages: 294
Snowflake Rating:❄❄❄❄(4/5)
Synopsis: Capone never expects to be knocked for a loop when he enters the MC’s new business, the local gym. However, that’s exactly what happens when he lays eyes on Mackenzie Mathews, aka Mac. A woman has never affected him like she does, only she should be off-limits. She’s an employee, but Capone can’t seem to forget about the feisty amateur MMA fighter. Too bad for him, she isn’t an easy woman to get to know, despite his best efforts. She’s determined not to let him or anyone else in. Mackenzie doesn’t have time for men, other than those she spars with at the gym. She’s too busy trying to keep a roof over her and her little brother’s heads, and keeping him away from the clutches of a street gang leader intent on having them both. She’s a fighter both in and out of the ring. What in the world would this hot biker want with her? How can Capone convince her that he’s looking for more than a good time or to make her life more difficult? Capone is determined this woman will be his, no matter what or who stands in his way. Come hell or high water, he knows Mackenzie is destined to be Capone’s Wild Thing.

"HALTING TO FREE MEN CAPTORS ARE TRAPPED BY ST. PIERRE POLICE," Toronto Star. December 8, 1933. Page 23. --- French Authorities Waiting on Rocky Shore as Boat Pulls In ---- NOW HELD IN JAIL ---- Halifax, Dec. 8. Four Canadian coastguardsmen carried away yesterday aboard the rum-running vessel Kromhout are safe at St. Pierre.
While every available craft of Canada's preventive service combed the Atlantic for the four captives, they were landed on the rocky little island off Newfoundland's coast at nine o'clock last night.
Captain Ross Mason and the crew of the Kromhout were arrested immediately and held in jail at St. Pierre.
The motor vessel was seized yesterday morning by the patrol boat Stumble Inn after a long chase in which the government ship fired several times on the suspected rum-runner.
Four men of the Stumble Inn's crew were placed aboard the seized vessel as a prize crew, and they were carried away when the towline linking the ships was cut, and the Kromhout escaped in the morning mist.
Chief Officer Milton Mackenzie of North Sydney was in command of the prize crew; under him were Second Engineer James McIntosh of Sydney Mines and Able Seamen Raymond Oxford and Murdock McDonald of North Sydney.
Search for the speedy craft carrying the four captives began immediately. The wireless carried a warning to all ships to be on the watch for the Kromhout; and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who administer the customs preventive service, concentrated their ships in the waters about Cape Breton.
From the North Sydney base the Stalwart and Tenarity steamed seaward. The Bay Hound sped from Charlottetown to join them. And the Stumble Inn - officially patrol boat No. 4 - took on provisions and fuel hurriedly at North Sydney and put to sea for St. Pierre, where the Kromhout was believed to have taken on her cargo of 1,500 kegs of liquor.
It was while the Stumble Inn was driving hard for the little French island that the Kromhout slipped into shore under cover of darkness to land her prisoners. Advised to be on the watch, authorities there immediately arrested the Kromhaut's crew and lodged them in jail.
Now International Problem Ottawa, Dec. 8. - With the arrival of the rum-runner Kromhout at St. Pierre, and arrest of its crew, the sensational case involving the kidnapping of four Canadian coast guardsmen becomes one of international significance.
Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the departments of justice and external affairs were to-day considering the next steps in a drama which must now, in all probability, involve the exchange of communications between the Canadian government and the government of France.
"It looks like a straight case of extradition," an official of the department of external affairs said to-day when informed of the arrest.
Extradition would involve the transmission of a request by Canada to the government of France through the Canadian minister that the men be returned. While steps along this line have not yet been taken, it seems probable action will come without delay.
At R.C.M.P. headquarters it was stated to-day the department of justice would be consulted as to the next step. The Kromhout, it was explained, was in charge of a prize crew, and consequently the question of mutiny was involved. A special international law applicable to mutiny is in existence, and this may be invoked.
Departmental wheels were turning and it is probable action will be taken shortly.

Romance novels with maximum angst/pinning that are not the Earl Takes it All or Waking Up with the Duke (have read and loved those)?
Well, definitely check out more of Lorraine's backlist! When the Duke Was Wicked and The Duke and the Lady in Red are also super angst. WtDWW has a heroine who was infatuated with the hero as a child and watched him marry another woman, only for him to begin to fall for her after his wife dies when she asks him to help her find a suitor. I describe it often as "What if Romancing Mr. Bridgerton was a lot hotter and also good?" The Duke and the Lady in Red is fucking agonizingly sad at points in the best way.
Other Heaths if you haven't tried them: Between the Devil and Desire (TW: discussions of childhood sexual abuse) in which we get one of my favorite rogue/uptight widow pairings I've ever read; Once More, My Darling Rogue (same TW) which makes an amnesia plot work and wrings it through for max angst (it's a retelling of Overboard! starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, lol); Surrender to the Devil (again, TW childhood sexual abuse). The entire Scoundrels of St. James series is very angsty as it's basically about a group of kids who experienced immense trauma and then grew up and became successful friends; the Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James is a sequel series about THEIR kids.
Elizabeth Hoyt gives great angst. My favorites include Thief of Shadows (TW: miscarriage and infertility), Scandalous Desires, Duke of Midnight, Sweetest Scoundrel (TW: childhood sexual abuse).
Indigo by Beverly Jenkins has a great "rake falls for sensible virgin" story. Both the hero and heroine work in the Underground Railroad, and the heroine was enslaved as a child. I really love the pining in this one.
Peak pining and angst can be found in The Dragon and the Pearl by Jeannie Lin, a star-crossed villain as hero story in which a warlord kidnaps a former concubine to get info out of her, and ends up falling in love with her. There's an incredibly angsty scene where he tattoos her with his mark (on her request) because they believe he's going to go off and die soon... ugh, I fucking LIVED.
A Rake's Guide to Seduction by Caroline Linden has FAB pining and angst. Hero is the rakish best friend of the heroine's older brother and realizes he loves her, but when he goes to ask her brother for permission to court her he's too late--she's engaged. Four years later, she's a widow and depressed after a bad marriage, and they meet again at a house party. He tries to cheer her up............. and then shit happens.
Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas is a supremely angsty read about a married couple that has been separated for basically their entire 10-year marriage. She wants a divorce so she can marry her lover, and he's like "yeah sure whatever, but first give me a baby". It's not YEAH SURE WHATEVER as it turns out.
Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret begins super funny and then gets angstier as time goes on, complete with a multi-year time jump!!!
The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (widow heroine falls for hero who's on the spectrum and was once literally locked up by his family) and Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage (second chance romance for married couple that separated after tragedy and incompatabilities) by Jennifer Ashley give you big Scottish angst.
How to Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid--friends to lovers with a heroine who desperately wants the hero, while he thinks she can't deal with his life (he's very scandalous because he claimed his illegitimate child). This girl literally like. Almost dies on the moors.
When the Earl Met His Match by Stacy Reid. Pregnant heroine seeks a marriage from the hero, who she's never met before in person, after her lover abandons her. He's mute and agrees to claim the baby and marry her. It's really gorgeous because she learns sign language, grows close to him, etc, but there's some REAL good angst, complete with an "I love you" mid-sex.
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe has enemies to lovers, a heroine who doesn't want to fall in love, and a hero who falls hard--while having a heart condition that will significantly shorten his life if it's never mended.
Ever Yours, Annabelle by Elisa Braden. Heroine was in love with the hero in her childhood, he got seriously injured and they separated for years. Book deals with them reuniting, lots of angst, especially for Elisa Braden.
Elizabeth Lowell's medieval trilogy (read in order) has peak 90s romance angst! Untamed has an arranged marriage plot with a super alpha hero who wants a son and a heroine whose family line only yields boys if the mother is iN LOVE; Forbidden, amnesiac hero paired with a heroine who knows who he is but keeps it from him; Enchanted, the darkest of the three, heroine is recovering from a sexual assault and intense trauma while in an arranged marriage to a man who has no idea. Read wisely, again it's 90s era.
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall. The heroine is a trans woman who faked her death at Waterloo in order to transition, reunites with her best friend years later because he's suffering from severe depression and survivor's guilt. But what happens when he recognizes her???
Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas. Hero and heroine fall in love as teens; she's a fine lady and he's a servant and she's forced to reject him. He comes back years later BENT ON REVENGE!!!!
If you're down for non-historical angst, of course Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole for PNR (especially Dark Needs at Night's Edge and Dreams of a Dark Warrior, GOOD GOD), the Kings of Italy series by Mila Finelli (mafia angst), Give Me More by Sara Cate (throuple angst when a husband and wife invite their best friend into the marriage), Kiss an Angel by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (90s contemporary arranged marriage CIRCUS angst), Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid (m/m hockey hookups secret lovers illicit affairs angst).
