You Won't Be Alone (2022)
Tumblr media
When you bring a child into the world, what does it mean to protect them? It’s a big place out there, with plenty of wonders and dangers, and how a parent views that space can inform their treatment of their child. When Nevena’s mother is visited by a vengeful witch out for blood, she makes a bargain with this “Wolf-Eateress” to buy time with her infant. But is that time so great? Nevena lives in a cave away from everything, with nothing but the dirt and leaves to keep her company. It’s a smothering sort of love, a guarded one. But when Maria comes to claim her prize and make Nevena a witch in turn, her worldview is colored by rage and a desire for vengeance. Maria doesn’t coddle the young witch, smacking Nevena around as she throws her off the deep end into this world of blood and death. Nevena must instead find a path for herself.
Now we have a better idea of what a Terence Malick version of Poor Things might look like, at least in part. The central swath of You Won’t Be Alone concerns Nevena’s journey of discovery and self-actualization as she comes to understand society and maybe even try to find a place within it for herself. Where Nevena’s mother fears witches and Maria loathes humanity for what was done to her, Nevena herself seeks a middle path. She hops from body to body, experiencing different facets of the human experience as she struggles to adapt to each new corpse. In this way, she is a sort of pre-modern Bella Baxter, characterized by toddler-like movements and a thorough set of encounters with “furious jumping.” This is much more serious and introspective, with inner monologue for the voiceless woman replacing Bella’s outspoken and frank assessments of things around her. It’s also got a sumptuous period setting with a boxy aspect ratio still able to gasp in awe at the countryside with its rolling hills, rivers, and rocky caves. If it is tragic in its core, there is the hope that in Nevena’s daughter this relationship of fear and hate between witches and humans can be attenuated.
THE RULES
SIP
God is evoked in some way.
Witch claws in a scene.
A witch takes on a new form.
Some exclamation to the effect of "my, my, my"
BIG DRINK
A color is named.
Maria shows up unwanted.

Film: HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS (dir. Goran Stolevski, Poland-Serbia-Australia-Croatia-Kosovo-North Macedonia-USA)
Forum: AMC River East  Format: DCP
Observations: Two other folks in the house besides us. If anyone doubts that the influence of Stanley Kramer is now a guiding light in world cinema, here's yet another example. It's a celebration of a blended, LGBTQ+ household holding itself together with falsified papers and a pasteboard marriage against the outside forces of reaction and oppression. The story is complicated by interpersonal conflicts, which nearly drive the characters apart, but the "happy" (if uneasy) conclusion is just around the bend. If that sounds like I didn't enjoy it, well, no, I really found the experience of rooting (sometimes cringing) for these people enjoyable and satisfying. Then again, maybe I like Stanley Kramer as a flmmaker more than the smart folks, too.

Autumn in Thessaloniki
Known as the “Bride of the Thermaic Gulf” to romantics and the “co-capital” to pragmatist Greeks, Thessaloniki bears the name of Alexander the Great’s wife and sister with pride. This city, founded in 315 BC, defies simple categorization.
How can one capture the unique energy of Greece’s second-largest metropolis, now emerging as one of Europe’s most dynamic urban centers? Or convey the rhythm of a cosmopolitan hub that cherishes its millennia-old heritage while embracing global trends? Thessaloniki is a destination that enchants travelers, whether they come for an experience-packed city break or a longer stay that never seems quite long enough.
Tumblr media
A journey to ever-relevant Thessaloniki is never just an escape or a change of scenery. It’s a multifaceted experience in a city that stands proudly among Europe’s most captivating capitals.
Thessaloniki’s love for the arts is evident not only in its domestic and international festivals and various artistic expressions but also in its fascinating museums and no fewer than 15 UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The 11 halls of the Museum of Byzantine Culture will transport you to the glorious era of the Byzantine Empire, revealing all aspects of private and public life of the period through rich collections of archaeological objects, relics, and works of art.
The War Museum presents the modern and contemporary history of our country, while the Archaeological Museum unfolds the entire history of Macedonia through masterful works of art and findings. At the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art – MOMus, you’ll admire works from the Iolas, Xydis, and Apergis collections among contemporary artistic trends from abroad and Greece. Two related and equally interesting cultural institutions will bring you to the Old Port and Pier A, a wonderful walk in any case. There, at the Museum of Photography, you’ll see unique images of a constantly changing city and get to know older and contemporary trends in the art of photography through a vast collection covering the period 1890-2015, while at the Cinema Museum, the magical world of Greek cinema comes to life.
Tumblr media
Thessaloniki’s shopping scene is also a major draw, where you can indulge in retail therapy along the three main parallel streets of Proxenou Koromila, Mitropoleos, and Tsimiski, but don’t miss their perpendicular alleys, which hide shops full of treasures. The famous covered markets are also a unique experience, such as Kapani Market, a true feast of flavors and aromas, where, following the locals’ example, you’ll drink Greek coffee at the corner traditional cafe Modigliani. Nearby, a stroll through the also covered Modiano Market, known to older generations as the “Central Food Market,” is the new must-stop on the list for foodies and non-foodies alike. The 75 stores housed in the fully renovated space, which still retains its historic architectural character, compose a unique kaleidoscope of culinary trends and proposals that has nothing to envy from similar markets abroad. After enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, you’ll stock up on select delicatessen products and indulge in one of the top sweet Thessaloniki temptations, the amazing syrupy sweets from Hatzis pastry shop.
Tumblr media
Thessaloniki’s emblematic monuments, scattered throughout the city, will enrich your walks between shopping streets, the waterfront, and up-and-coming entertainment neighborhoods with a historical dimension. Near Saint Demetrios, the city’s most important church worth a visit not only because it celebrates this month but also because it’s a monument of particular importance as the martyrdom site of Thessaloniki’s patron saint, the city’s Roman past comes alive in the ruins of the baths, square, and a gallery of the Roman Agora, dating back to the 2nd century AD. Also impressive is the nearby Kamara or Arch of Galerius, bearing the honorary name of a Roman emperor and detailed decorative reliefs from his victorious campaign against the Persians in the early 4th century AD. A few meters to the north, another recognizable landmark, the massive Rotunda from the same period, is preserved in excellent condition due to its conversion into a Christian church and is famous for its beautiful mosaics.

Movies I watched this Week #118 (Year 3/Week 14):
My 3rd re-watch of Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean’s magnificent, all-male epic and the movie that Steven Spielberg had seen more than any other film. It’s so grand that the nearly 4 hours spectacle opens with 4+ minutes of orchestral music prelude on a dark screen and includes an ‘intermission’.
It got me to realize that most all movies (maybe because of the economics of movie-financing) always show deference to authority; The influences they represent, whether government, military, religion, civil powers, or simply ‘the big man’, the rulers are always accepted as masters.
🍿
The Garden of Words, my second anime ever, and coincidentally also my second by Makoto Shinkai (After ‘Your name’). A melancholy and poetic story about a 15-year-old aspiring shoe-maker student who keeps meeting a woman skipping work on a park bench at the beautiful Shinjuku Gyo-en gardens during the raining season. Gorgeous visuals of nature and rain.
The Wikipedia page for this film is nearly as long as the one for Obama!
🍿
3 more terrific debut films by young female directors:
🍿 For some unclear reasons, I’ve seen a large number of Parisian high school dramas recently. Spring blossom is one of the best. A gentle drama of a shy 16 year old girl who falls in love with a 35 man she sees outside a local theater.
And like Quinn Shephard’s ‘Blame’, it’s twice as impressive, because it was written by the talented Suzanne Lindon when she was only 15, and she directed it and starred in it before she was 20. Je l'adore! 8/10.
🍿 The Hive, my first film from Kosovo. Another on my growing list of “Debut films directed by female filmmakers”. The “first film in Sundance Festival history to win all three main awards – the Grand Jury Prize, the Audience Award and the Directing Award – in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition”. Based on a true story, it tells simply but touchingly about a war widow who started a small business, making homemade Ajvar and empowering the women in her village. Highly recommended. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. And of course, reminiscent of the Macedonian documentary ‘Honeyland’. 8/10.
🍿 Rye Lane, a cute new rom-com about two young black South London strangers who meet at random and spend the day getting to know each other. Fresh and original.
🍿
My 7th by Finnish master Aki Kaurismäki. Every time I watch another of his movies, I get elated. There is nobody who make movies like him, he’s one of a kind. The man without a past, the second of his “Losers” trilogy, opens with a cinematic gut pinch and doesn’t let go until the end. My favorite of all his films so far?...
The trailer. 9/10.
🍿
The Hollywood Reporter Critics put out a new list of their ‘50 best films of the first 21 years of the 21st century’, and I decided to go through the ones I haven’t seen yet.
First was Far from Heaven, my 4th tragedy by Todd Haynes. A precursor to his masterful ‘Carol’, this is another Douglas Sirk-inspired melodrama of oppression and unrequited desire in middle class America of the mid 50′s. Drenched in luminous colors over all (except of the scenes of illicit dangers, in the gay bar and black cafe), and accompanied by another expansive score, it’s a devastating tale of the price of conformity. The husband who can’t control his homosexual urges, and the wife who falls for a black gardener are doomed, and their lives will be shattered. The poor players had simply nowhere to go. 8/10.
🍿
‘Today I learned’ about ‘Elite Panic’ describing the “behavior of members of the elite during disaster events, typically characterized by a fear of civil disorder” and the shifting of focus away from disaster relief towards implementing measures of "command and control".
New order, my third memorable film by Mexican auteur Michel Franco (after the terrific ‘Sundown’ and the disturbing ‘April’s daughter’) describes a society collapsing, the exact moment when the shit finally hits the fan, when the riots on the TV screen cross over and knock on your door. It’s a brutal and unforgiving story, ugly, violent and without any sentimental sympathy. Shocking anarchy escalates quickly when the pressure gets too much.
When the revolution comes down, it will bring some serious bloodshed. No wonder the greatest boogieman the ruling class warns us all about is “Class Warfare”. The most distressing film of the week - 9/10!
🍿
To catch a thief, Hitchock’s romantic thriller. The Good: Grace Kelly on the French Riviera, the ultimate glamour of the lifestyles of the rich and famous at Cannes and Nice, Hitchcock’s first (?) use of helicopter shots and modern car chases. The Bad: The genre roles & sexual politics of the husband-seeking unmarried young woman would not fly today.
I watched it solely because of this clip.
🍿
2 with Brigitte Fossey (of ‘Jeux interdits’):
🍿 “...The square is mine!...”
I forgot that she played the grown-up Elena in Cinema Paradiso, one of Ennio Morricone’s most popular movies. And yes, without his magnificent score, the 3-hour long nostalgic trip to the heart of cinema, would not be half as enjoyable.
The question that was not well-answered was: Why did he not bother to visit his mother for 30 year? (Re-watch).
🍿 The happy road, a mediocre 1957 children comedy about 10 year old American boy and French girl, who escape from a Swiss boarding school, and hitchhike to Paris. Directed by and starring Gene Kelly, falling for the girl’s mother. 3/10.
🍿
Inside, the new Willem Defoe survival thriller. He’s an art thief who breaks into a hi-end NYC penthouse of a wealthy art collector, intending to steal 3 paintings by Egon Schiele. But the security system traps him inside, and he’s unable to escape for many months. Captivating hi-concept and one-trick film, but a bit too long. 6/10.
🍿
...”Never forget how much he loved you, Kubo”...
After being seriously obsessed with everything ‘Coraline’ all of last year, Adora moved on to Laika Studio’s next stop-motion animated story Kubo and the two strings. A Japanese-inspired action story about a one-eyed Samurai son who creates magical origami figures from his 3-stringed shamisen. But it was as if all the pretty parts were combined by an AI-engine. 4/10.
I will introduce her next to ‘The Iron Giant’, and ‘Isle of dogs’.
🍿
First watch: The green room, one of the last few François Truffaut films I haven’t seen yet. In it, he plays a somber 1920′s journalist obsessed with death who builds a shrine to everybody he had lost. I love his human directing style, but this was a confusing mess. 2/10
🍿
RIP, Ryuichi Sakamoto X 2:
🍿 In remembrance of his passing I started re-watching Bertolucci’s ‘The Last Emperor’, but to be honest, I got bored after 30 minutes; I blame the less than HD version of my pirated copy. So maybe I’ll try it another time.
Instead, I went back to my of favorite ‘Black Mirror' episodes, and the only one he composed the score for, Smithereens. It was directed by the same man who did my other cherished story ‘Hated in the nation’, and was also about online media frenzy that spirals out of control. This ‘Tyranny of the Screens’ parable received mixed reviews, because it wasn’t futuristic enough, but for my money it is a tense thriller on par with the best of them. 10/10.
Sakamoto’s dark score is subtle and minimal. You have to strain to notice it. Perfect!
...”This is my last day!”...
🍿 Psychedelic Afternoon, a 2013 animated short, featuring David Byrne, and released to raise money for children who survived the 2011 tsunami.
🍿
‘Mad men’ is one of the few TV-shows I've seen, and I’ve seen it 3 or 4 times (including once last year). “Hazel” of YouTube ‘Dream Dimension Productions’ analyzes one “Perfect Scene” from Season 3 finale “Shut the door, have a seat”.
A terrific breakdown, which got me to watch it again, together with a few more.
Extra: Her ‘Netflix has a content problem’, which I also agree with, as I was attempting to avoid 90% of all their content.
🍿   Talk to her, my 3rd unsatisfying film by Pedro Almodóvar (after ‘All about my mother’ and ‘The human voice’). A twisted story about two unappealing men who befriend each other at a clinic where they both care for comatose women. His editing choices and scattered direction, constantly focusing on unrelated detail in every scene turned me off. Some artistic perversions (like a silent film clip of a tiny man entering a giant vagina) notwithstanding. I guess I’m not a fan. 4/10.
🍿   2 more by Noah Baumbach (both with Adam Driver):
🍿 The last film I saw this week was also the best one:
I started watching the new Adam Driver dinosaur fantasy ‘65′. but it felt so stupid the moment Adam Driver opened his mouth, that I had to switch it off within 5 minutes. Instead, I turn to Marriage Story again. An absolute masterpiece, so painful and so true, for all divorced couples and parents of children of divorce. (That 10 minutes long scene at the apartment was raw! - Screenshot Above). 10/10 deservedly and without any reservations.
(And now I must see ‘Two for the road’!)
🍿 (Actually, I ended up with his uneven While we’re young, which didn’t measure up to that. The milieu of hipster millennial poseurs and Brooklyn wannabe documentary filmmakers was uninteresting, and I also can’t stand Ben Stiller.)
Still I will look for the rest of his movies I had missed.
🍿

The Failures of the Pashas (The Three Swords)
Joe Chill: Joseph Chilton, was a successful Macedonian mercenary, for generations, during the Punic Wars; the wars against Carthage, over the control of the white bloodline, held as sport and rape by "blacks", those of Sub-Saharan blood. A "Chinee", a Chinese prostitute incapable of Islam, a true Sunni, held bed to Joseph Chilton, and birthed Joseph Chill, a "junior"; the opposite of his father, a Rosecrucian, the order of Centurions. Mithras, the seizure of women as prostitutes, for a night, a guaranteed orgasm, and a child and lands and pastures, to make them women off of the street, having lost their fathers through war. An inclusion into Rome. Jesus, tucked in his right thumb, called an "imami", the slur for a homosexual, and broke rules, within law non-legalized, the code of the Gauls. You called him "Jesus"; prizefights, police badges, and wine bets, the origin of the athletics leagues, breeding the constable. The origin of the military tribunal, to kill him.
Adolf Hitler: Adolf Hitler, was the son of a military engineer, having outed a Catholic Cardinal for pederasty, the conversion of one of the Hitlers to Rabbinical order; however, the Rabbinical having Romalian blood, an "Azaz", angels, having jumped and bounded, in a living agony, despite having all the attributes of the Stasi, the Huns and Uighurs and Boers and Amish and Americans and Germans, the sacred points against Napoleon Bonaparte. A "Sheriff", the term for a political deacon, hired by any international actor, a politician, under Realpolitik's rules, out of embassy, those of Bismarck. Fire marshal, the mark of the Swastika, on the left pectoral or breast, breast if a woman, the father of Adolf having slain one, his son gay, under Calvinist code, not replied in type print of law, but in fact of transvestite observation. A homosexual dominatrix. Adolf, tucked his in his elbow at court's oath, called a "Jewish doctor", under code of testimony, and created a movement of beer swillers, killing Ernst Rohm, the "Boelyn", an innocent panda fighter, the creator of all of German culture and ales. You called him "Fuhrer"; creator of film arts, cinema, and psychiatric film, the creation of the movie part to determine medicine, a cop's drama. The origin of the castration clinic, having been stolen of semen by prostitute.
Ted Bundy: Theodore Charlebois, was removed from the Bombardiers, Philip J. Morris, and born through the McMahons, the World Wrestling Federation, the sales of cigarettes and Atavan, for pilots and from cats, a High House of Enver Pasha; that of the Harpoon brewing fortune, microbrews and state universities, all of the State Police, the Reserve Officers Training Corps, and the COBRA cop and teacher funds and court date appraisals, at his fingertips. He was CIA from birth, a child soldier, as marked on his DMV license, but was a whaling expert; spotting his market declined, he wrote nautical penmanship as "Buddy", the blood of Booth, the actor's stage wright, hunted by Israeli intelligence services, "Meir", since birth, "Fillmore Lodge"; the Rotary Association associated with strip malls, malls, and prison labor, a proper cop among the households of United States Presidencies, the intelligence adjuncts of the United States. The criminal guilds, this one being CRASH. He supborned a book on Spider-Man, early in the publication's run, teaching writers how to write backwards, a past news edifice, instead of forwards, and intended pattern of treaty, and therefore, to create a predictable pattern, a procedure drama. This was a pedophile, by judgement of his family, the Charleboises, and he was expelled, hunted by MI-6 assassin Alice O'Neill, Army intelligence Jeffrey Dahmer, Catholic friar Steven Charlebois, and Los Angeles police detective Richard Ramirez. Ted Bundy mastered print, and with it, the Grand Ol' Party turned to pederasty, with international scandal breaking out at dozens of murderers running through prostitutes circuits at the writer's duels, luring them into his realm, the written pen. In the end, he was seized, having killed a child for NAMBLA, and was put to death, by his conjugal liaison, a beautiful temptress in his mind, however the sex unsatisfying. It was his first, and last sex, having refused to see a hooker. His mark was the "Spider", a Hopkins, the middle and ring fingers tucked in, but he wasn't a Ludlow; he was a Charlebois, the name meaning "Cain"; the first murderer, the Inquistor's Oath.

Housekeeping for Beginners follows a queer chosen family
Tumblr media
Macedonian-Australian filmmaker Goran Stolevski’s award-winning film about a rowdy queer chosen family, Housekeeping For Beginners, is out in Australian cinemas this week.
It’s the gay writer-director’s follow-up to his queer romantic drama Of An Age, and the brilliant new domestic drama is also getting great reviews.
Housekeeping for Beginners got the prestigious Queer Lion Award after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Shortly after that, North Macedonia picked the queer flick as its international Oscar submission.
In the movie, set in North Macedonia, lesbian woman Dita never planned to be a mother, but became one anyway.
Living in capital city Skopje, Dita finds herself as the matriarch of a very crowded and chaotic house full of queer folk.
Young Mia is a bundle of energy. Vanesa is a rebellious teenager who’s desperate to branch out on her own.
Gay man Toni also lives under Dita’s roof with his younger lover Ali, who moves in after a one-night stand.
The family is rocked when Dita’s girlfriend gets a serious cancer diagnosis. She forces Dita to promise to take custody of her two daughters after she dies.
Dita must convince a very reluctant Toni to help her fight the homophobic legal system that threatens to tear their entire queer family apart.
youtube
Goran Stolevski on the origin of Housekeeping for Beginners
Goran Stolevski said the idea of making a film about a queer household came from a photograph. He saw the photo online of a gay couple living with eight queer women.
“There was an image I saw of a group of queer people living in a warehouse, essentially, in the ‘70s in Melbourne,” he told Filmink.
“I updated it to present day Macedonia… I grew up in a two bedroom apartment, there were six of us living in it.
“And that doesn’t count the 49 cousins that came in and out of the house every single day.
“That was what reality was to me. I’m still close with all of those cousins. I go back all the time to Macedonia.”
But Goran said, this particular story could be set anywhere.
“Macedonia is small and obscure and barely anyone has heard of it. But in terms of the way people live day to day, it’s much more similar to the majority of the world,” he said.
In the film, numerous characters are not only queer but also Romani, further putting them on the fringes in their own country.
“I don’t give a s__t about the politics or making a statement. I never expect to ever change anyone’s mind about anything,” Goran told Filmink.
“But I do believe in preserving that feeling of what day-to-day life was like for a certain kind of person in a certain time.
“If we don’t do it right now, it’s going to disappear, without a record.”
Housekeeping for Beginners is in select Australian cinemas on Thursday (May 9). Of An Age is streaming in Australia on Prime Video.

There is a fixed flood of recent films on HBO Max, which is without doubt one of the many causes we have chosen it for the most effective streaming service. February 2023 brings a batch of nice new films, together with the Sandra Bullock/George Clooney house thriller Gravity, the 2023 film Empire of Mild and the acclaimed documentary Honeyland. The catalog of the most effective HBO Max films is stacked with outdated classics and new blockbusters. A number of 2023 Oscar-nominated films are streaming on the service, together with Inishrin and Elvis' Banshees.
