Exclusive Interview: Rez Ball filmmaker Sydney Freeland "it was really important that we were able to shoot on the Navajo reservation - there's a texture & spirit to the land"
Over the last decade, Emmy-nominated writer, director, and producer Sydney Freeland has forged an impressive film and television career centering marginalized characters and diverse voices. Earlier this year, Echo, the Marvel limited series that she directed and executive produced, premiered at number one on both Disney+ and Hulu. Back in 2014, her debut feature, Drunktown’s Finest, inspired by…

On your Writing Queer Characters post, when you said to not write queer people as serial killers, that's basically an extension of portraying queer people as bad, right?
In a story where most, if not all, of the characters are queer but everyone is morally gray, would that be kosher?
(Asking as a non-binary bi)
To your first question, no, not necessarily.
Queer people can be bad people, because we're people. Just like we can be good people too. What's problematic about the 'queer serial killer' is that it's a stereotype that portrays the act of murder/serial killing/crime as inherent to the queer identity. It says, "due to traumas that queer people tend to face, they become serial killers."
Obviously that's not true--but for someone who may not know queer people in real life, or has a very weak grasp on the concept, they may take this as the truth.
If a story has only one queer character, and they are the villain, that's also problematic--another stereotype.
However, in a story with multiple queer characters, I believe what you're describing is just humanity. I don't see an issue with that.
I hope that helps!

Meet The Parents - An LGBTQ Student Short Film 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈
(Please donate or reblog if you can! The goal is to reach $3000 CAD by December 30, 2024! Right now it’s at $435 CAD)
“In the heartfelt dramedy, Damien, a trans man, returns to his family home for the first time since his transition. He manages both excitement and nerves about the dinner, with the help of his supportive older sister, Victoria. However, the evening turns unexpectedly when his parents, not recognizing him, mistake him for Victoria’s new boyfriend. Damien navigates this awkward situation and easily wins over his parents. Amid laughter and shared stories, Damien’s identity is revealed. While his mother’s acceptance comes swiftly and with open arms, his father initially reacts with shock and anger. Damien is left grappling with the fear that this may be the end of his hope for reconciliation.
Meet The Parents explores themes of acceptance, love, and the intricate dynamics of family, portraying a heartfelt journey of reconciliation and understanding.”

SUBLIME CINEMA #681 -KOKOMO CITY
D. Smith was homeless when she started shooting this documentary about the sex industry, and we can sense the fury and rawness of the conditions under which this film was made. Art can sometimes be a savior.
But not for everybody. Koko, one of the main subjects of this movie was murdered soon after filming - the victim of a hate crime. The film is dedicated to her.

AAAAAAAAAAA I can't believe we did it, the webseries entirely made by trans people, Transplant, released the pilot episode and had a full house for a premier showing in Minneapolis. It was amazing to see so many people come out to support trans filmmaking, the reaction we got was amazing.
We poured a lot of energy and tears and blood into this project, 24 amazing and talented trans individuals who have never done something like this really killed it. Please watch the episode and consider donating to help us make more trans art and narratives
