Profile
Early Life
Anaxagoras was born in Shambhala in 1165 as the only successful experiment in the assignment of the Artificial Crest "Crescent Moon", created by her father, Myson, and Odesse. Her mother, Cornelia, died giving birth to her and was replaced by Cleobulus, who took the newborn to Fhirdiad in 1167.
There, she was raised in secret in the castle dungeons, deprived of food and water for long periods of time to prevent rebellion, and robbed almost daily of her extremely precious blood. Because of her semi-immortality, "Cornelia" often inflicted terrible tortures on her for the sole purpose of entertaining herself and passing the time. Anaxagoras, severely weakened, had no way to protest, suffering in silence every abuse protracted by her false mother.
In Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes or if Byleth chooses to teach the Black Eagles, Anaxagoras' past will be slightly different:
Instead than in the castle dungeons, she will be raised in the sunlight, but forced starvation and torture by her mother will still occur. Unlike when she was alone, however, in these timelines she can count on Prince Dimitri, to whom she will have the courage to confide several times. The two will then forge a strong bond and support each other in the events to come. He will be the one to give her the name "Ksenia", given her hatred for her real name.
In 1176, at the age of eleven, Anaxagoras was the main weapon for the regicide's success.
Months before the event, Cornelia forced her to gorge herself in order to gain weight and then produce more blood and magic. Once "ready," she was subjected to hyugulation and made to bleed like a literal beast. Her blood was later made to drink by soldiers who went mad and began killing innocents in Duscur, and then committed suicide when the mission was accomplished. She herself was secretly present and forced to cast magic attacks toward the king and his escort. She will never forget Lambert's suffering gaze on her a moment before he was decapitated.
War Phase
The burst of war resulted in a worsening of Anaxagoras' condition. Those Who Slither in the Dark's demand for blood increased exponentially, and Cornelia also began to use it to power the Titans, giant robots driven by unknown and advanced technologies.
Crimson Flower
After returning to Fhirdiad, Dimitri married Anaxagoras in secret, formalizing her name change to "Ksenia" and crowning her as his queen consort. After that, Cornelia was exiled to Arianrhod and, despite Ksenia's dissent, was provided asylum to Rhea and to the Church of Seiros.
Four years later, Ksenia got pregnant and, in late 1185, Prince Aleksei was born. The news was not spread, and only a few people knew of the existence of an heir to the throne.
A month later Dimitri left for Tailtean, and she, haunted by a terrible feeling, followed him to the battlefield, supporting him in the fight against the Black Eagle Strike Force. Ksenia was utterly disgusted by Edelgard's actions and, once she saw her husband die before her own eyes, she expressed this in words, but she was badly wounded in the back by the Empress and buried alive with her husband's head clutched in her lap.
Azure Moon
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amounts of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri offered to free her as well, but under the circumstances she was forced to refuse, making him promise that sooner or later he would kill her mother Cornelia.
Their reunion took place five years later. Once Fhirdiad was regained, Dimitri rushed to the dungeons in search of the girl who saved his life; he found her in the same cell, but in a dying condition. She had been left starving for months, reduced to a pile of bones and with a very deep wound that drew her Crest on her back, unable to heal quickly because it was inflicted by a magical blade. He decided to take her with him to make sure she received the best care, and when she finally began to get better, she offered to lend aid to the wounded, becoming essential in saving many lives. Before the end of the war, Anaxagoras took the courage and revealed to Dimitri her involvement in the Tragedy of Duscur, begging him to execute her because she could no longer bear to have been among the authors of the regicide. Instead, however, the new king was sympathetic and spared her, claiming that she too had been a victim of Cornelia. To leave her past behind, he gave her the new name "Ksenia".
If Dimitri marries no one at the end of the war, two years later he will take Ksenia as his wife and the two will live a happy and love-filled life. If, however, Dimitri marries another woman, Ksenia will disappear into thin air and all trace of her will be lost.
Verdant Wind
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amounts of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri carried her off as well by force and the two fled Fhirdiad together, living as vagabonds in absolute misery. They spent the last five years fighting imperial soldiers, but she could not stop the prince's fall into oblivion; she ended up being treated as a mere medium for the success of his plans, yet she did not have the guts to abandon him. She was later badly wounded and due to malnutrition ended up becoming badly infected, causing a glow of sanity in Dimitri, who began to protect her again as at the beginning of their journey. Shortly thereafter they were both found by Gustave and she saved.
After Dimitri's death in Gronder, Ksenia left the group and followed the Alliance army to Garreg Mach. She spoke with Byleth and Claude and offered her assistance both in battle and with the wounded, asking for hospitality until they reached Enbarr. After Edelgard's death, she rejoined Dedue and left the capital with him.
Silver Snow
Anaxagoras met Dimitri when he was accused of assassinating Rufus and imprisoned in Fhirdiad. There, they both witnessed each other's torture and ended up offering each other support, holding conversations in the middle of the night. Although she was weak and extremely starved, she did her best to alleviate the prince's wounds by sending him small amount of magic to the opposite cell; this little help was crucial to his escape once Dedue broke in to free him. Dimitri saved her as well and they both took asylum in Fraldarius territory, forging a strong bond, but this did not prevent the prince from falling into oblivion. She continued to support him, despite her opposition, even on his suicidal march to Enbarr.
After Dimitri's death in Gronder, Ksenia left the group and came alone to Garreg Mach. She spoke with Byleth and Seteth and offered her help both in battle and with the wounded but did not reveal her identity, declaring that she was pregnant and asking for hospitality until they reached Enbarr. After Edelgard's death, she reunited with Dedue and left the capital with him.
Bloody Lightning
Ten days after being buried, Ksenia was exhumed together with Dimitri by Those Who Slither in the Dark and taken to Shambhala. Although she was still alive thanks to her Crest, she completely refused to leave her husband's head and looked like a corpse herself.
After a long rehabilitation and regained sense of self, she spent the next two decades segregated underground with the only company of her father and Dedue, now transformed for eternity into a demonic beast.
When she saved Sera's life because of a premonitory dream, she realized that the protagonist of the vision was indeed her son, but Myson forcibly brought her back to Shambhala.
The moment Aleksei himself showed up at the City Without Light, the two were finally able to reunite and she revealed to him the truth about her origins. She later followed him to Itha and became the mastermind behind the plan to reconstitute the Sacred Kingdom of Faerghus and give her son his rightful inheritance. She died after Aleksei's coronation, with a smile on her face and peace finally achieved.
Personality
Ksenia is a woman with a good soul, always ready to help others even going so far as to diminish herself. At first glance she seems shy, very closed and of few words, with a perpetual veil of melancholy in her gaze, but getting to know her in depth will reveal a jovial, outspoken and at times sarcastic personality. She enjoys saying ambiguous things without thinking too much about it and possesses a keen sense of humor.
However, she has several feelings of guilt for what she was forced to do under Cornelia's command; she feels guilty for everything bad that has happened in Fódlan since her birth, so she will repeatedly plead Dimitri to execute her and take her life because, according to her, she exists only to bring misfortune. In Bloody Lightning she is in her most precarious state of mind, where she is reduced almost to a ghost who spends her days talking to the mummified corpse of her husband as if he were still alive, consumed by a steadily growing anger toward Edelgard that is eating her up from within.
Ksenia's love for Dimitri and Aleksei is extremely strong, and for them she would not hesitate to give her life, going so far as to take advantage of her semi-immortal condition and severely injuring herself so as not to see them in trouble. Her sense of protection also extends to the entire Faerghus army, proving crucial in battle as support (especially in Three Hopes). Inversely proportional is her hatred, on the other hand, for the woman who replaced her mother, not so much for what she did to her, but for all the evildoings she did against her people; when she dies, she will be the only person for whom she will celebrate.
Etymology
It takes the name of the xenia (in ancient Greek ξενία), which among the Hellenes was the sacred concept of hospitality (as well as being an epithet of the goddess Athena), and is thus interpreted as "hospitality" or as "hospitable"; etymologically it is derived from ξένος, xénos, "guest," "stranger."
Anaxagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher. He is a pre-Socratic philosopher, counted among the pluralist physicists along with Empedocles and Democritus. He was the first philosopher to "import" philosophy to the Greek peninsula, more specifically to Athens.
