Digital Good Omens 2 Sountrack is coming out in 4 days! 🥳 CD version in October! :) ❤ Coming soon on vinyl…
Out to Stream/Download from 25th August. Out on CD 13th October. Coming soon on vinyl…
David Arnold’s ‘end of the world’ complex and multi-genre soundtrack.
From the Award-winning composer of Sherlock and Casino Royale comes a follow up to the hugely successful, Emmy nominated Good Omens soundtrack.
Good Omens series 2 premiered on Prime Video on 28th July. The series follows the odd couple, angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) in their quest to sabotage the end of the World. The six-episode sequel to the popular adaptation of the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, concerns the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) arriving without his memories to Aziraphale’s bookshop. Aziraphale and Crowley attempt to find out what happened to Gabriel, whilst hiding him from Heaven and Hell, both eager to find him.
The Soundtrack
David Arnold’s soundtrack to Good Omens was first released in 2019 to favourable reviews, with BBC Music Magazine calling it “a rollicking trip to hell and back. Blueprint Magazine described it as “a great listen” and Sci Fi Bulletin commented on “plenty of memorable themes” to conclude that “This is another work of art from Arnold”. At times nostalgic and eerie but always varied, beautiful and full of excitement, the Good Omens 2 soundtrack showcases Arnold’s every skill from his composer arsenal. Featured here are orchestral arrangements with sprinkling of Sugar Plum Fairy pizzicato and percussion, jaunty strings and mighty choral sweeps from Crouch End Festival Chorus. Added to the mix are rock guitar riffs, and psychedelic 70s sounds and all together they create a haunting otherworldly feel, complementing the fantasy and the quirky humour of the show. The spirited Waltz of the opening theme is also present in the second series and it wonderfully sets the scene for fantastical mayhem. In series 2, this robust, evocative, and funny music entity, becomes yet again another character in the story. Award-winning composer David Arnold is well known for his blockbuster scores, including Stargate, The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Hot Fuzz, Paul, Independence Day, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Casino Royale as well as for his TV work such as Sherlock and Dracula. Also available: The original soundtrack to the first series of Good Omens >

Peter Tork and/or Release, 1969.
“After quitting [The Monkees], Tork tried to launch a new band called Peter Tork and Release. The fact that he’d been in the Monkees may have made it harder to gain respect, he said, but his fame also gave him advantages over other new bands. The pluses and debits of being an ex-Monkee balanced out, Tork thinks. Release failed, he says, because ‘I didn’t know how to stick to it. I ran out of money and told the band members, “I can’t support us as a crew any more, you’ll just have to find your own way.”’ In hindsight, Tork says, he should have asked the others to help support the band and hang with it after he could no longer afford to be its sugar daddy. But at the time, Tork says, he lacked the self-esteem to ask for other people’s help.” - Los Angeles Times, October 20, 1992 “I had a group called Release, which I couldn’t keep together because I didn’t know enough about management. [We recorded] just a few basement tapes. Actually they were attic tapes.” - Peter Tork, Goldmine, May 1982 “[Judy Mayhan] had played the folk circuit and worked as a waitress at New York’s famous Gaslight Club when she met Peter Tork […], who helped her along in the business.” - The Columbia Record, December 18, 1971 “According to Judy, Peter is another one of those good guys. It seems he frequently opens his doors to needy guests.” - Star-Gazette, March 7, 1970 “That [‘Peter Percival Patterson’s Pet Pig Porky’] was taught to me by Judy Mayhan, who was a singer that I worked with and managed for a time — she had an album on Elektra. It was just a thing she had heard at a nursery school. I got credited for it [on the album] because Screen Gems never asked me who wrote it. It’s actually public domain.” - Peter Tork, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. CD liner notes, 1995 “[There were recording] sessions that Peter produced himself BEFORE I got that opportunity [at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio]… and it was Peter that made that opportunity possible to begin with… He was a very important person in my life and did his best to guide me… […] Peter told me many years ago that he had no clue as to what happened to all those recordings.” - Judy Mayhan, via Forrest George on Facebook, February 21, 2019

APH America "Ethnography" and Headcanons (SFW)
The United States of America, Alfred F. Jones, Mr. Stars and Stripes, 'Merica, Pretty Boy, um... or just simply America.
Here is a list of data I have gathered from this country and oh boy, what an interesting specimen we have here....
Ethnography
You will find this find this mythological creature at your local Walmart superstore during the evening hours on a weekday, sporting flannel loungewear pants (The plaid kind), a cotton t-shirt that definitely has been worn no less than two (2) times, Old Navy $1 flip flops, and a gray jacket.
When asked about his late night runs to the popular supermarket chain, his answer is just simply:
"There's nothing else to do and no where to go."
America's Cart Inventory for March 22nd:
One (1) package of "Mega Stuf Chocolate Oreos" for $5.97, One (1) 6-Pack of "Starbucks Frappuccino Chilled Coffee Drinks" in Caramel Flavor for $7.98, One (1) Family Sized Bag of "Flaming Hot Cheetos" for $5.94, One (1) "Furby Interactive Toy" for $39.19, and One (1) Stick of " Axe Apollo Men's Deodorant Stick" for $4.97. Total of purchase was $64.05 before tax.
When questioned about the "Furby Interactive Toy", he replies:
"Yeah dude, there's this thing I wanna make that's called a "Long Furby". Wanna come by my place and check it out?"
I agreed to the invination as it would give me a better look into his living space and lifestyle. He's very friendly person.
Living Space (Home):
Oh dear god, why did I agree to come here?
House is a what you would expect from a typical American college student such as:
"Saturdays Are For The Boys" banner flag, Marvel and DC posters, a very unsettling looking blue leather couch that looks like it has been through hell and back, random dumbbells and untouched exercise equipment, every game console from the 1972 "The Magnavox Odyssey" to the PS5, action figures from various popular TV shows and comics, an old KFC bucket with half eaten chicken on the coffee table and a shelf with a huge vinyl record and CD collection.
Conclusion: What a fucking gross nerd.
America offers a cold can of Coca-Cola, I accept it.
He shows me a very long light blue "Long Furby" from his collection, further proving how much of a dork he was.
When asked what kind of music he liked (in regards to his music collection), he replies:
"That's hard to answer, it changes every week. Because of my diverse music, I pretty much like everything. One week I could be listening to 1980's classic rock, 2000's techno-pop, Bluegrass Country, 1990's Hip Hop or anything. But, if I had to give you this week's favorite artist, it would have to be Taylor Swift and Doja Cat."
"Interesting..." I replied.
I have recorded enough data for today (the smell was bothering me) and left his home to do further extensive research.
Headcanons:
America has a deep love for cars and trucks, he can be seen working on his vintage 1968 Dodge Charger R/T called 'Thunderbird' (an absolute speed demon that can reach at top speeds of muthafuckin' 156 mph), and his enormous 2019 Ford F-150 'Big John' that he loves to drive to world meetings because he is a total stud muffin showoff.
Oh yeah, he defiantly modded 'Big John' horns with airblasters. So when he parks his car and he sees other nations come out of their vehicles, he pounds on that horn and scares the living shit out of them.
He totally does 2 am donuts in the Thunderbird the front of Walmart parking lots with his brother Canada to freak him out.
Other than seeing him work on his cars while listening to "Waking Up in Vegas by Katy Perry" on the radio, he's in his room sorting out his action figure and comic book collection.
Damn, what what a geek.
He has an eBay account where he buys, trades and auctions his collection as his interests constantly change.
If you think him being a geek, dork and a nerd is gonna save him from getting a basic ass Stanley cup, you're wrong.
He has a navy blue one that he takes to meetings and he would get dirty looks from the other nations.
"Goddamn it America, you do not need that much coffee."
"Fuck you, you scone sucking twink. It's not coffee, it's the Panera Super Charged Lemonade mixed with Redbull."
"I beg your fucking pardon..."
He gave Canada a red one for his birthday that he also takes with him to meetings.
"Canada, mon ami~. That better not be that merde American drinks that makes your heart explode."
"No, it's Tim Hortons iced coffee."
"Well.. that's better than what America drinks..."

I saw a community production of Legally Blonde the Musical over the weekend! Will share my rambling thoughts below the cut:
so I judge lbtm productions by THE DOOR(TM) bc door discourse so let’s talk about that first:
so I've been analyzing the show’s sizzle reel a bit too much haha, but from the staging I figured that there wouldn't be a door during the ballad. I said this to my friend but then she pointed out that the program literally says elle's door so I got excited
however I was right and there was no door :(
so what happened instead was that they wheeled out elle's desk and bed and luggage for her room. (oh and before that they turned on little lights that made it looked like a starry night while elle was singing the first part - very pretty). emmett comes "into" elle's room with the two champagne glasses, they sing, she cries, elle then takes her suitcase and exits through the main stage doors (these doors are the same ones used for harvard, callahan's office, courtroom, paulette's salon etc - it’s the doors seen in the video above)
so we have emmett in elle's room and elle out of her room
emmett sings *what about love* and THEN elle comes out of one of the side doors (like closet doors) and starts singing. so I guess she is still outside?? very hard to tell
but there are some steps so elle is singing from the top step, emmett on the bottom
and by the end of the song, elle has come down the steps and elle and emmett sing the ending back to back (but not touching each other)
also I would like to note that emmett tries to touch elle (to stop her from walking away) but elle flinches which I thought was a good touch
so yeah tldr: no physical door (but elle did walk out some doors), emmett is singing from inside elle's room(?), but at least he didn't confess his love to her face so yay?
——————————
now from the beginning:
there was a lot of the barbie movie soundtrack playing during the preshow haha
so they definitely updated the show to the present day - there was a selfie circle light thing, everyone had iphones and ipads but I feel like they updated it in a very organic way. didn't feel forced or fake which sadly I feel like happens in a few updated versions (say regents park). also the ways they updated certain moments was quite clever - will get into it later
so the beginning has the girls doing the tiktok dance in front of the light circle for elle and then there was no candle lighting instead they said something along the lines of "find your light"
the store manager is a guy
okay clever modern day update! elle gives her phone to one of the restaurant customers so that they could film the "proposal". but then after seeing that warner didn't propose yet, she took her phone back
at "does look like the face of harvard law", the admissions guy is addressing the audience! there was a pause so we all shouted yeah! and he looked at us like we lost our minds haha
the admissions guy saying *ethnic movement* was followed by a pause and a big gasp from the audience for some reason
there was no marching band just cheer leaders and there were two guys in skirts
oh one of the guys has a character called kiki later (the gay guy in paulette's salon) and he is basically the best background character - he had the best outfits and omigod walking around in heels and later wore the cutest boots. yeah best background character
emmett is now a class of 2019. also he hasn't slept since 2016 (it should have been more haha)
aaron tries to shake enid's hand when she introduces herself but then she gets very enid and then he just backs away haha
bruiser watches rupaul drag race. oh yeah they had actual dogs on stage! very small very cute
elle pulls out a hydroflask and an E statue thing to put on her desk
emmett didn't sing along during blood in the water which I really like
paulette has a playlist instead of a cd. vivienne came into the salon and paid kiki for a gift bag of sorts
elle has a hello kitty toy and emmett threatened to throw it in the trash haha
no more redbull they drink celsius now. also I love that they drink from the same can
another clever update! elle texts warner during chip on your shoulder. so things like *and grandma bootsie!* is sent as like a second text. (we can hear the text sound). and the christmas message is a voice memo
oh yeah and when elle introduces emmett to paulette, she takes him by the hand and walks him towards paulette which I thought was cute
omigod so during the part where elle and paulette try to communicate behind emmett's back - paulette holds the shampoo bottle like it's a dick and we all lost it hahaha
after elle gives callahan her resume, she walks towards emmett and circle around him and they're both silenting squealing and then elle walks off stage squealing haha
they did not have a handshake during chip on my shoulder. nor did emmett do any silly dance
so much better - callahan sends out the results by email so everyone is looking at their phone
also I didn't catch if warner gave his phone to someone to film or someone was just filming on their own phone but someone was filming warner's proposal to vivienne
emmett was on stage for most of so much better and when he left with the rest of the people he gave elle two thumbs up
brooke now has an app, callahan does not speak twitter or tiktok
brooke was doing the long jumprope at one point - I forget what it's called like two people are holding the rope and brooke is jumping
emmett: we are here to whip up your legal defense *does some awkward dancing* it was very funny haha
okay so emmett was wearing his bag during this whole time and during take it like a man, he gives it to elle and then she wears it for the rest of the number (I just love that addition haha)
also this emmett wears glasses and it took me a while to notice/realize but after his makeover, he no longer wears glasses for the rest of the show
this kyle had a lot of kyle swagger haha. he walks through the audience, he freaking adjusts his belt, holds the package like *that* obviously, bends over a lot - a lot of kyle haha
and then when he comes back for his stylist, and elle is like do it - elle and paulette look at each other, nod, and then jump and did a chest bump - I was totally not expecting that and everyone was laughing at that haha
during the bend and snap scene, elle says that it works on straight and bi men
the news reporter reporting the trial is now replace with the delta nus watching the news coverage on a phone (and the reporter is a voice over) - I thought it was a nice addition!
my friend said that a fun update that they should have done was paulette and kyle taking an uber instead of an ambulance to the hospital haha
when elle tests the bend and snap on nikkos, there is a guard standing next to him and the guard’s eyes bulges out (he reacts haha) every time elle does it (and nikkos doesn’t) and it was very funny
I didn't notice it but my friend pointed out that elle doesn't sing during gay or european. I figured that it was so she can rest for a song. my friend said that it's bc elle already knows that she's right and doesn't need to reason it out like everyone else. I guess both can be true haha
I completely forgot to look out for carlos during the song but there was no need bc he wasn't sitting with the cast - he busted in through the stage doors haha
my friend said it would have been funny if carlos was sitting in the audience and honestly now I want that to happen in a production now hahaha
also carlos and nikkos are both dressed in black
callahan actually pushes elle against the wall (side of the stage) when he kisses her - it is like a full on make out but then she pushes him off her and then slaps him
warner walks and sees them kissing and then immediately walks out. vivienne stays long enough to see the slap
okay talked about the ballad already haha
when emmett says *and I don’t have to hit on interns professor*, elle’s dad rises a bit but elle’s mom pulls him down and they talk - really like that detail. gotta love parents concerned for their daughter
oh instead of it being just like apprentice, the delta nus call brooke a girlboss
the scene of the crime now comes with pink caution tape - very funny seeing them pulling it across the front of the stage haha
the court stenographer is a guy! The way he sang back *omigod we rock!* was very funny haha
during find my way, callahan comes out and glares at emmett when it’s said that his wife hired emmett to handle their messy divorce
paulette gives her cards to audience members in the front row!
elle is in a pink graduation gown
elle gets the ring from paulette and then proposes to emmett. he spins her around
curtain call: they all stood in one line and sang while doing different poses
overall it was great!! better than we expected haha - my friend and I have our nitpicks haha but we had a great time :) (main letdown was no door haha) also yay for filipino elle :)
also! some random thoughts that we had from watching this production:
- how did warner get the internship? like he didn't work as hard as the other people (we're assuming). we now figure that it might be that warner's dad called in a favor
- callahan's wife getting a divorce - that means that elle and emmett must have told her? And they must have reported him to the school so did harvard fire him? does he still have his law firm? my friend thinks that he is a slimy enough lawyer - that he got to keep both positions. I like to think that he got fired
- patrick page would make a great callahan

You've talked a bit about your favorite centipedes and arachnids, do you have a favorite millipede? I get super tiny ones in my apartment in the PNW and they're always my favorite bugs to see.
I don't pick favorites, so here are some pretty millipedes from Earth

FACE
I love the way that Jimin is treating this just like a regular comeback, giving us a comeback map and image teasers. That makes me so happy. HE KNOWS WHAT WE WANT!!
The fansign call is such a typical Kpop promotional event. Not the call itself but the idea of the one-on-one interaction they used to do during fansign events. I think he is trying to make up for all those things that got taken away since 2019. They used to be able to do fansigns in person but that ended a long time ago, so I think it’s very personal to him and sentimental of him to do that sort of thing again. Also, it will be another thing that falls in line with the album theme as it will be FACE to FACE with Jimin.
There will be 70 winners (nod to the 7). Good luck to all of those who entered the raffle for that. I hope we get to hear about the winner's experiences meeting Jimin in person!
I am thrilled that we will get two music videos and I’m hoping maybe as soon as this weekend we will get another TikTok of maybe Lie...Serendipity... Filter... oh my God, what if???
I can't say much about Promise becoming an official release because I might start crying. Seems extreme but it makes my heart swell with so much pride for him. I know that song means so much to Jimin. Even Hobi knew how much that song meant to him and gave him a real CD of it in a case with a photo book.
I can't wait to see everyone unraveling all the symbolism, mysterious hidden themes and number puzzles he will have embedded in every part of his FACE. I also can't wait to hear him talk about it all with us. PLEASE UNIVERSE GIVE US JIMIN ON SUCHWITA!!
When I say hidden themes... supposedly on March 24, the moon phase will be waxing crescent...
This is gonna be a wild ride and we've been waiting so long for you, Jimin.
#omg i get to add Promise to my playlists#i'm really glad we don't have to call it pjm1 anymore#jimin face#everyone needs a ride or die friend like Hobi

🏅🧠 for the ask game!
Thank you for the ask!
What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).
I felt really proud that I finally finished posting Show Me My Silver Lining! The fic was started in March 2019, finished in May 2019, and started posting in November 2019 -- and it took me until July of this year to get my shit together and post the last chapter. The time lag did interesting things to how I feel about the writing itself, but I'm proud the fic is finally out there. And proud that I finally started posting Bilbo's POV!
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
I have an idea, based on a prompt from @greatestkindofcourage, for a Barduil fic tentatively called Country Radio. This is sort of how it starts:
Gimli swears loudly, and Legolas looks up just in time to see the box Gimli’s wrestling with disintegrate into a spray of cardboard fragments, spilling paper all over the floor. Gimli swears again. “This thing was stapled shut,” he says. “Like, really stapled.” “This one, too.” Aragorn hoists up another box. “It’s newer, though. Should we open it?” Get rid of it all. “Sure, Legolas says. He sets his phone down on the couch and wades into the mess of papers Gimli’s drowning in. Postcards. Sheet music – handwritten sheet music. Photographs. Opened envelopes, with the letters they contained stuffed back into them. A VHS tape. A rolled-up poster. A CD. Absolutely none of it looks familiar. Everything in the other boxes has been something Legolas could place, something he could recognize at least vaguely. But he’s never seen any of this stuff before. “These postcards are cool,” Aragorn remarks. They were bundled together, but the rubber band’s snapped from age, and all that’s left of it are a few pieces clinging to the front and back postcards in the stack. “They’re from all over the place, too. Italy. Sweden. Japan. When did your dad go to Japan?” “He didn’t,” Legolas says. “The first time he left this place was when he helped me move into my dorm.” “Then he knew somebody who was a big traveler,” Arwen says. She’s peering over Aragorn’s shoulder at the postcards. “These are all from the same person. Did your dad ever mention someone named – Robin?” “Like Robin Hood? No,” Legolas says. He holds out his hand for the postcards and Aragorn hands one over. Just one. He and Arwen are reading the others. Some part of Legolas cringes from the idea of reading postcards his dad got from somebody, but he gets over it fast. Fast enough to realize that this isn’t something he should be reading at all. Arwen comes to the same conclusion, at the same time. “These are love letters.”
Unfortunately, that's all I've got. Maybe inspiration will strike soon!

Rough Trade, 2021.
The pandemic has been a hellacious dice roll. Since last spring, all of our favorite businesses, diners, take-outs, arcades, specialty shops, record-stores, and venues had all shuttered with no telling other than the governor’s word when they’d re-open - if they’d re-open. I’ve been fortunate to see that all of my -stores on the island have survived with few hiccups. The last time I shopped at one? Summer of 2018 at Mineola’s Mr. Cheapo’s which capped off what was an unprecedented post-surgery record-store victory tour. It was so vitalizing that I promised myself I’d do it again.
For the record, I almost never done any city music shopping, save for when I purchased Sonic Youth’s Sister, Skinny Puppy’s Rabies, and Ministry’s Just Another Fix during a post-senior year city excursion. For one New Year’s Day at Times Square, my friends and I visit another record store and I passed up a chance to buy Anal Cunt’s Morbid Florist. Since then, it was nothing but mail-orders and island stores until now. I always owed it to myself to visit Rough Trade, New York City’s greatest record store for the longest time. Anxiety, scheduling, poor timing, and other personal insecurities kept me from going. New York State’s various business-closing mandates didn’t help either and I know the pandemic era has not been nice to anyone at all. Even my aunt Laura warned me not to take the train. At least, not yet.
And then a wake-up call: they’re closing down their Williamsburg store to re-locate to as-yet undisclosed digs. They announced their target date: March 21st, the final day before shutting their doors until this summer. So when a record store advertises 25% off CD’s, books, and other merchandise to say good-bye, you fucking go. I had bad luck being scheduled off of work on Mondays and Tuesdays, the two days they were closed during the week. Enough was enough. I spoke up and I finally won a Wednesday off at a price of working six-straight opening-and-closing shifts. Now, it’s on. This visit to Rough Trade is the prologue of my second-ever Record Store Victory Tour, which I’m still waiting to bank to make happen.
With a pending return to New York City / Brooklyn in the springtime, so did reminders of a certain someone from Brooklyn whose eclectic music and cultural tastes aligned with mine and a little more; someone I had a distinct connection with. She was on my mind intensely as it’s springtime in the boroughs. I had cut all ties with her not long ago because she slit me deeply and it’s a shame. It’s that time and place that holds her significance, and later visits made me wish I still had someone of her calibre to come join me.
The luxuries of living near the Long Island Expressway / Rt. 495 meant no time wasted getting there. Fifty minutes later with little traffic and only eight blocks remaining, I’m here. Driving through any part of New York City is signing your death wish, whether it’s rolling down the asphalt pothole fields of Junction Ave., or the start-and-stop traffic of 3rd Ave. during rush hour. This time it was the expressway, and driving over the new Kościuszko Bridge which I never seen before. No question that its presence would forever mark this perfect March day. Jumping off the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway / Rt. 278 and driving down the narrow 8th St. was not a harrowing experience as long as you slow it. I park it near Marsha P. Johnson State Park, and walk two blocks southeast to finally scratch Rough Trade off my bucket list. I had up until 7PM with a $160.00 head-start burning in my pocket since Christmas 2019. No time to waste…and go.
I walk in and I feel it. I look around, and right away I could tell we don’t have this on Long Island. Rough Trade was the kicker: everything I couldn’t find in other stores I found here. You wouldn’t find Garcia Peoples, Horse Lords, or Sweeping Promises in any too-kind indie store or mall that would rather worship The Beatles, Phish, Jimi Hendrix, "The Dead", "Floyd" or “Zep” as you call them, you fucking Bruce Villanch-Mason Reese cross-breeds. Think Pitchfork, Alt Citizen, Gold Flake Paint, Brooklyn Vegan, and Post Trash. Not to say I never found gold at my local stores, but Rough Trade had that special something-else because us islanders don’t have the same vibe the city stores does. Oh, much better. Even I hoped to see specific titles because this location was city-centric, and at times my wishes almost came true.
First up: the cassettes section. A small selection ensures that I’d already have four in my hand in the first three minutes digging. You sure wouldn’t find Birthing Hips’ Urge To Merge anywhere else but here, right? Clipping’s Visions Of Bodies Being Burned? Nope. What a relief to find Hesitation Wounds’ Chicanery as I blast half of those songs at the gym. To my amazement: finding Kedr Livanskiy’s Ariadne. Too bad it wasn’t the disc version because that would’ve also had January Sun, one of my favorite releases of the Tens, but at least I have her now.
Next up, the used vinyl section; a small tidy amount of it that’s reasonably priced mixed with rock, pop, jazz, blues, reggae, and Latin jazz. On the overheads played various selections of Nancy Sinatra (“These Boots Are Made for Walking”) and with Lee Hazelwood (“Sand”) as I looked for more wins there. Don Patterson’s Movin’ Up!, a summer memory, was finally scratched off the list. Marcio Montarroyos’ Magic Moment was something I wasn’t expecting to find. It featured “Pedro Bonita”, a springtime memory of walking through Central Park, so I took it. The expedition got better when I acquired Dual Action’s “Babe Beer Car Bar” compilation on clear red vinyl (!). That’s one of two Hospital Productions’ releases I took home with me.
On to their 7” section where it started to sting. A good number of these platters were priced at an average of $7.00 and up, even higher. I would’ve loved to take Martin Rev’s “Gutter Rock” home but at $17.00 for only two songs? No dice. Same with the Idles / Heavy Lungs split. But I got my hands on Gong Gong Gong’s “Siren” b/w “Something’s Happening”, another small victory and one of two I found of Wharf Cat Records. At least there’s some Raincoats and Pylon up for grabs, and if anyone wants Brandy’s “Clown Pain” b/w “Rent Quest”, it’s still there. The only normal piece I took home with me was a promotional copy of Maria Muldaur’s “Midnight At The Oasis”. Just the single because it’s all I ever need of hers.
Rough Trade had plenty of new vinyl with many titles going for $25.00-$30.00 each. That was the only section I stayed away from, personally. I wasn’t so much into The Body yet that I didn’t pick up I’ve Seen All I Needed To See, for example, or the many PJ Harvey records they had on display. But some good titles in my eyes were found such as Wharf Cat Records’ ACLU Benefit Compilation. To my surprise: Alan Parker & Madeline Bell’s The Voice of Soul from Themes International. It’s the very first time I’d ever seen a [TV / film / radio] library record; the stuff hip-hop producers look for.
But as mentioned before, all discs were 25% off. Aside from the Christmas money by my generous aunt and uncle from the Brooklyn-youth era, the discounted discs would at least cushion the blow to my wallet.
I started with the used hip-hop section. I immediately grabbed Madvilliany which was the soundtrack to my most vital days at Stony Brook. More Madlib to be had when I grabbed Bandana and Pinata with new favorite Freddie Gibbs. Then, how about two legends with Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures Of… and Eric B & Rakim’s Paid In Full? Saw a copy of A Tribe Called Quest’s We Got It From Here… and that was a must-grab. I found Death Grips’ The Money Store (featured on the very first Omega WUSB show) and I had to have it. The only time I saw Death Grips up for the taking was when West Sayville’s Vinyl Paradise (r.i.p.) stocked several of their titles but gave them up because I felt I spent too much. It’s a start. My final jazz acquisitions were two from Herbie Hancock: Headhunters and The Best Of…. I had a opportunity to grab Headhunters at West Babylon’s Looney Tunes and also Sunlight at Amityville’s High Fidelity but wasn’t too keen on Hancock back then. On a separate note: Lee Moses’ Time And Place caught my eye. It’s one you see everywhere posted on obscure samplist groups and forums. That’s when I realized the mood of the overheads changed from Sinatra / Hazelwood to children’s educational TV theme songs; going from Sesame Street to Reading Rainbow. That was a cringe moment and the staff felt it, too. So they switched it up to something better: Hailu Mergia. Speaking of Awesome Tapes From Africa, I paused to pull the trigger on Nahawa Doumbia. The music is from 1980, but I couldn’t make the judgment here not knowing her music beforehand.
I continued searching through the used disc section, and these next finds I felt not only defined this store but the entire experience as well. I kept going and spotted titles I didn’t expect. Know of Council Estate Electronics? You wouldn’t if you also didn’t know Mr. Godflesh himself (Justin Broadrick). Since I did, Arktika was in the bank. Profligate’s Somewhere Else, the final of two Wharf Cat finds, was nice to see. Then, I see Boy Harsher’s Lesser Man (Extended) in the corner of my eye and immediately I snatched it up. (I noticed that of three copies, two were priced at $21.99 and one for $13.99. Why would I not want the $13.99 copy?) I was happy to get Silent Servant’s Shadows Of Death And Desire but wished it was Negative Fascination instead. But any Silent Servant is better than nothing, and beggars can’t be choosers.
As I was still reeling from the Boy Harsher grab: two from Pharmakon (Bestial Burden and Devour) and two from Uniform (The Long Walk and Shame) all in the same gasp. I almost went into cardiac arrest and died from seeing them in stock. Would Rough Trade’s staffers cut from labeling their stock to find me lying on the floor and call for an ambulance to Maimonides Hospital is up for debate. One final round in searching still continued in the used disc section. Zola Jesus had her own divider and saw what they offered. Okovi featuring “Veka” was in my possession and that’s five Sacred Bones titles I’d purchased. In fact, I attempted to order from them online a few months ago but money issues made it a bad idea. Those five made up half of that order. Rough Trade’s shelves were littered with -Bones stuff and they're both from Brooklyn, so they’re really riding that golden stallion out towards the sunset, are they?
Other wild cards I knew enough to buy started with Mr. Elevator’s Goodbye Blue Sky, a personal favorite from last year’s pandemic blues. Here’s two titles rather to be found in city stores and not on the island: Lithics’ Tower Of Age and Deeper’s 2018 self-titled album (the latter for $1.75). Idles’ Joy As An Act Of Resistance was plentiful and a lauded release, so I found a copy that included a bonus disc of their live performance at the store. And as a general rule, you can’t pick up Idles without also getting the conflicting Sleaford Mods’ 2018 e.p. Plus, I loved Tame Impala’s Currents, so I got it to spite everyone who thought their psych-rock era was better.
More? Sure. Soundgarden’s expanded Ultramega OK (including the same-titled e.p.) was in my hands. During the new-vinyl round I was thrilled to find some Akitsa records but passed them up, so I got some black metal diet with Darkthrone’s A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Finally (or so I thought), I nabbed the Electric Dress album from Merzbow, Carlos Giffoni, and Jim O’ Rourke also for $1.50. Peak hipster era. I thought to myself that I may have gotten it with my previous RRRecords mail-orders, but thankfully I was wrong. As I thumbed through that side of the bins, there it was staring at me, literally: Tops’ I Feel Alive. Jane Penny’s green-eyed look of disbelief on her face was looking at me because I passed up on the cassette, and now she’s waited for me again at the disc bins. “I Feel Alive” was a great pandemic-blues tune for me, but I didn’t know them enough to go for it. Our apologies, Jane.
Rough Trade had a few other sections as well. “Cheap Thrills!” their shelves said. That was their lower-priced new vinyl section mixed in with other used vinyl singles. One quick peek and I found Long Island white-label heroes Q-Ball & Curt Cazal. It wasn’t “Makin’ Moves”, but I wish it was. To my right is their rarities box. That’s where the big money copies are. It was where I saw a copy of Albert King’s Born Under A Bad Sign for a painful $110.00. Another copy found in-store cuts the pain away by another $50.00 less. Also on that side of their store, you’d find their bar / cafe disused indefinitely. Their live space has been cordoned off and so has most of their listening rooms. What wasn’t lost, however, was another flight of steel steps leading up to their book section; the shelves spread evenly of well-categorized books about music history, art, New York City, gender / sexuality, The 33 1/3 Series, and no shortage of copies of Cosey Fanni Tutti’s Art, Sex, Music or Kim Gordon’s No Icon to go around. The most ironic thing printed on paper? Kara Simsek’s So You Think You’re a Hipster?; of course of all places in a Williamsburg / Bushwick record store. En route upstairs are where the box sets and staff picks are. With two weeks to go, get those licks in at their operational photo booth and then see the pics- posted of how much fun the best of Brooklyn are having...assuming they’re not dying inside by rising rent prices).
By then, I was spent. I felt like there was nothing else to comb over. So I packed it in and gave my stack to purple-haired Janie, dressed in a pink long-sleeve and purple felt pants. As she counted everything up, I had second thoughts. I knew it was now or never, so I decided to give two titles I originally passed up a second chance. I ran to grab J Dilla’s Donuts and Discharge’s Protest And Survive: The Anthology. And that was that. She said I qualified for a free tote. (Are you offering a credit check for a bank loan, too?) and dashed one more time for a shirt. That was also 25%, too. I wasn’t leaving here without a fucking t-shirt.
She thanked me for my purchase, and I thanked her for her kindness. I left Rough Trade feeling -$417.00 happier. That’s what music-shopping therapy does to you. This venture had made me forget all of the recent depressing ills and anxious troubles I’ve had because it’s self-maintenance, healing, and power unto yourself. The return to Brooklyn was a much-needed reprieve outside of the daily toxicity experienced on the island that offers nothing that I really want that the city has. That, my friends and allies, is what you call happiness. New people, new experiences, opportunities, and fun. That’s what brings me it. I never felt it in such a long time.
Not since last March was when I set foot in Central Park and immediately turned back because sundown approached. Two weeks later, most of the world shut down flat and I didn’t return until now. I wasn’t the only one affected by cautionary stay-at-home mandates and city-wide closures, but things are much better now than last year when people died everywhere left and right. People and businesses are slowly out and open again with more information, confidence, and vigilance to live their lives and keep the damage to a minimum. The time was right to take precautionaries, to breathe again, and get back into it. I know I’ll get back into Rough Trade when they re-open, likely as my city go-to for everything I practiced and preached on Omega WUSB. They were on a whole new level, a level I wished other island stores would follow. It might arguably top my final visit at Tower Records before their closure.
I drive home through the tight Brooklyn streets and start the nerve-wrenching path home starting at the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The movement panned to a cripple getting on Rt. 278, but seeing the colors change on the Kościuszko Bridge showed its’ new second life at night; a sight to behold. A chilly, mid-Forties coldness dominated the ride home as I said ‘goodbye’ to the New York City skyline of clear pitch-black skies and ‘hello’ to the wide-open L.I.E. roads.
I finally arrive home with the trace of lucky green transparent on my fresh cotton threads; the new notes that'll define the next couple of years. I unpack my goods and let everyone know how my day was as I wait for the flattery from my friends and allies at WUSB. Spring is finally here. It’s a chance for renewal. The vaccines are coming and so’s the money. I’m here to win it all. Place your bets.

The Utility Journey
I've had some time to sit on the past weekend of trialing. There are a handful of you that have been following me for the past four years as I trained and started trialing in Utility. Maybe a few of you from when we were working on Aayla's novice title. I'm terrible at keep records but the earliest record I have of Aayla in Novice A Obedience is in March of 2018. So five years of obedience.
The first time I entered rally I spent some time sitting outside of the obedience ring and watching for a bit. I remember thinking, nah. That's not for me. So I kept working on rally and hoping I could get into Agility. Then with a few nudges from my the people who were teaching me Rally to try obedience I started training and entered novice.
I remember then more intently watching all the levels. I though, I'll just get Aayla's CD, then maybe think about open. Forget Utility. Scentwork? Go outs? A class almost no one qualifies in? The dogs and people looked stoic and frankly no one looked like they were having any fun. I remember clearly telling myself "I'm never doing utility"
While training to enter Open I started thinking, why not train for Utility? If we get there we get there. Yet I started watching utility more and more. There was something about it, the difficulty, the challenge and the overall achievement of making it to a level that a lot don't get to. In 2019 I started training Aayla on scent articles. Thinking if I can get her to do scent articles, I can for sure train the rest.
Well we ended up training scent articles. It took us about two years but Aayla got solid enough that I started training for the other exercises. While I always thought that scent articles would be the hardest, we were heavily challenged by the go outs on directed jumping and more recently the directed retrieve.
In May of 2022 we tried for Graduate Open, so the baby Utility class. We NQed, but went home with homework and had an idea of what to work on. Then in June 2022, we tried entering the Utility ring for the first time. Both trial days we NQed. More homework, more things to work on. Then we tried three trials for a total of 6 days in September. We managed to barely scrape by with one Q. I was elated for that Q, it was a small glimmer of light that maybe we could do Utility. Yet the following 5 NQs showed that she was just not ready. I pulled out of trials and we worked on more proofing and confidence.
After 8 months of work we again entered but I thought I wanted to switch her to preferred. First day I entered her in graduate open again for the confidence building. She Qed, and then got 1/3 Qs for preferred Utility the following three days. She felt okay but was having issues with her directed retrieve. Overall performance was good but not great yet. Felt like our performance was shakey. I read more in preferred Utility and felt frustrated that it was going to be a longer road to get a POC or anything else because we would have to start over with preferred Open as well. So I decided to switch her back to regular, meaning that her preferred utility leg would mean nothing.
A few months later we entered another four day trial. Graduate Open and three days of regular utility. She Qed in Utility one day, but even the days she NQed felt stronger in the exercises. Like she was getting it. Two legs down and one to go. I was still unhappy with our Q rate and was really starting to wonder if we would get this class down well enough to even have a shot at UDX let alone OM or OTCH.
Then I ended up entering Aayla in a Wildcard Utility class for ASCA. (Regular Utility but it doesn't count for anything, since she didn't have her CDX title with ASCA yet) Out of two days she had a solid Q one day and a NQ the second with her directed retrieve being the issue. Yet this meant that Aayla's Q rate was increasing. She Qed in utility at least one day at the past three trial weekends. I was starting to feel better and hope was growing.
Then this weekend she was entered in Utility three days in a row. Day one she was very solid on all of her exercise. Only issue was with the cleaning I did on the articles. She NQed cause she didn't bring me the first one. She found it, picked it up and spit it out like it was gross, searched hard again but ended up not wanting to bring it to me. So handler error. Yet everything else was very very good. For the first time it was a confident and correct run on every exercise.
Then the following two days she Qed easily with minimal issues. Getting her highest scores and equally Qing in Open both days a well. She Qed 4/5 Obedience classes and it would have been 5/5 if I had not mishandled my articles. She was confident and so good! We had some little hiccups like an autofinish and a crooked go out. Yet overall the main components are there. Now just to chip away at the little errors. Yet her Q rate is phenomenal this weekend. I now am back to feeling like we can get her UDX, and we have a higher chance for both a OTCH and OM than I have ever thought.
Yet having a UD behind Aayla's name makes me want to tear up. This dog had done so much for me. She has tried so hard and learned so much. She has a Utility Title, she is my first Utility dog. My Novice A dog that got all the way to UD for me. I didn't think we would get here, but here we are. We've reached this goal and are now running for the stars. Don't know how far we will get before she or her body decides no more, but there is a part of me that is content now. Content that she has achieved this. Content that she has a title worthy of her. That my first dog to get all the way to a UD was her.
Now onwards and up to see what else we can do together.

Peter Tork and J&R Music World staff, 1995.
“The J&R Music World staff rallied around Peter Tork as the former Monkee visited the lower Manhattan superstore to promote his new album, ‘Stranger Things Have Happened’ on Beachwood Records. Shown, from left, are Loren Polans, J&R manager; Jim Drzik, J&R assistant manager, pop store; Jay Rosen, J&R assistant manager, pop store; Doug Diaz, J&R head music boyer; Rich Kueton, J&R indie buyer; Charlie Bagarozza, J&R store manager; Mary Jane Glaser, J&R video buyer; Tork; Sue Vovsi, J&R GM; Baby Rupnarain, J&R marketing; and Burt Goldstein, president of Big Daddy, which distributes the Tork album.” - Billboard, July 22, 1995
A fan shared a photo from this event on Twitter, here.
"[W]e would hang out, and I said, ‘Peter, I noticed that all the other Monkees have solo albums. Why don’t you have a solo album?’ And he said, ‘Well, I just never got around to it.’ I said, ‘Well, you know, I have a label, I have national distribution, and I have a studio.’ I said, ‘Why don’t we make a record and we’ll try, you know, we’ll shop it to the majors and if nobody picks it up, we can still put it out on my label. So there’s no doubt about it, we’re making a record that’s coming out.’ And he said, ‘Okay.’ So we worked on it about four months, and at the end of the four months, he said, ‘You know what, James? I don’t want to shop it. I want it on your label.’" - James Lee Stanley, Tales of the Road Warriors, March 2019 (x)
"‘I want some ambiguity — not straight moon-June-spoon-lovey-dovey,’ Tork says of his music." - Chicago Tribune, January 19, 1996 (x)
Q: “Why, after all this time, do we finally have the first Peter Tork CD?” Peter Tork: “I don’t know. Shouldn’t I have ever put one out? Oh, you mean why did it take me so long? I don’t exactly know… I needed James and he couldn’t help as long as I lived in the San Francisco Bay area. That’s one thing. I suppose, too, that until recently, I wasn’t equipped psychologically.” - Beachwood Confidential Newsletter, 1995 (x)
“My personal thanks to James, I have my first album, after all these many moons. How far freakin’ out, man. I waited a long time to work with him again. Thanks beyond words, buddy. Thanks, too, to those who stuck by me. Love to all, Peter” - Stranger Things Have Happened 1994 liner notes (x)
