AND THATS ON HEAD BABEYYYYYYYY
imagine if you were a 15 year old who was absolutely obsessed with One Direction and one day you found out that One Direction was writing and producing and starring in their own movie and you were SUPER excited because you just LOVE One Direction so you go to the theater with all your friends who also love One Direction and you watch this scene where Liam from One Direction opens up a medicine cabinet and sees this disembodied unblinking eye that represents the eternal and inescapable audience. and there’s also part of the movie where they show you actual genuine footage of a guy getting shot in the head. In the One Direction movie.

THIS IS HOW I FIND OUT YOU CAN READ THEIR FBI FILE?!?!
It is kinda insane how wild the Monkees are when you look into it. They were hired for a TV show but started an internal revolution where they kicked out their music supervisor to have control of their own music. They made a movie deconstructing their image and Hollywood in general. Their music spanned several genres including some very experimental stuff that would influence later music. They met and befriended the Beatles. They wrote and/or directed some of their episodes. One of them is the son of the woman who invented liquid paper (white-out) and then he would go on to basically invent MTV before he sold the concept to those who made MTV. They have some of the first music videos. They fucked. One of them even was known for his orgies. They sometimes hated each other but still loved each other as brothers. There is an FBI file on them allegedly spreading communist and anti-american propaganda at their concerts. They had a song that had to have its lyrics changed because it was too intensely political, even alluding to JFK’s assassination not being done by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1969. Their TV show was revolutionary in structure and content. Disney stars and boy bands would not exist without them. They had Jimi Hendrix open for them. One of them was a member of the Hollywood vampires. And that isn’t even all.
And yet most people don’t take them seriously.

“[Post-Monkees, Peter Tork was part of] a San Francisco-based rock band named Osceola. ‘That was a name full of significance,’ he said. ‘Osceola was chief of the Seminoles, the only tribe never to have surrendered to the federal government.’” - The Daily Oklahoman, November 11, 1983 “Thorkelson played in a band called Osceola, and sang in the Fairfax Street Choir, a 30-voice choir that performed with rock band instrumentation. In neither venture was he billed as ‘Peter Tork of the Monkees,’ but he later did concert work (‘fourth on the bill’ said Thorkelson) performing folk, rock, classic rock ’n’ roll, and some Monkees material under the Tork moniker.” - article by Michael J. Gueulette, The Bowling Green News Revue, May 24, 1979

I actually doodled the thumbnail sketch for this piece in my German notes during class (I basically never do thumbnail sketches so they really was a special occasion), although I can't find the note now so I can't get a photo of it to post. :')
Timelapse, sketch and alternate version below the cut!

Dolenzmith moments touring in 1967:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mike giving Micky his hat and
Mike grabbing him/escorting him during his 'James Brown' routine in I Got A Woman. (post w bigger images for both by savebatsfromscratch From the Live, 1967 Album:
Micky stalling as Mike tunes his guitar on The Girl I knew Somewhere, Mike teasing 'We tune because we care', and Micky giggling at him.
Mike and Micky having a bit teasing each other during Mary, Mary, where first Micky gives several false starts for the song, then Mike gives several false endings, including Mike playing a 'neener, neener' tune on his guitar.
Mike thanking the crowd for not being unruly by saying 'I think this is the first night in 22 years I've ever been able to hear Micky. It's really nice.'
Mike then immediately introducing Micky's solo with 'Baby, you oughta see what we're gonna do next-- ALL RIGHT, and now here he is, the hardest working man in show business, the man who brought you such hits as The Last Train to Pottsville and I'm a Deceiver, Columbia Pictures and Screengem is proud to present his royal majesty, Micky 'James Brown' Dolenz. (the most fanfare for any of the intros, and leading to their 'James Brown' bit). From their KDWB recording:
Mike and Micky planning the only bit that was obviously prepared/not improvised for on their KDWB stint, leading to Micky being the Carlisle Wheeling character (sharing the name of a love song written by Mike).
Mike making a joke about piloting the plane and 'crashing Sam (Juste)'s seat' when Micky comes into where they're recording for KDWB with her and tries to bring her in on/make her a part of Mike's joke about finding the Secret City recording studio.
