Dick was three when his father gave him his first survival lesson. He had been kidnapped by some creep in a Halloween costume, or so Dick had always been told. He didn’t remember much of the incident. He remembered a shot of pain when the asshole backhanded him. He remembered the man with only one eye, but that eye shone with such hatred and madness that Dick would never forget it. Dick also remembered a man wearing a bat symbol on his chest and a dark mask coming to save him. His partner, a kid maybe a handful of years older than Dick, cupped him close to his chest, his cheek resting upon Dick’s head. “You are safe now, Richard,” he whispered, surrounding Dick with his black cape and making him feel safe. “We will allow no more harm to come to you.”
