Nobody is listening. Rose has been in places — rather, a single place in particular — like this before, and she knows how quickly word travels. She knows how people's ears perk up at the first sign of something exciting, out of the ordinary.
So she smiles knowingly, but she doesn't say much else. She sips at her tea and, accustomed to the Georgia heat, does not sweat or recoil.
Finally: "I try to love my brother, and I know part of love is respect. But I just can't take him seriously after he did what he did. He took us from the happiest place we've ever known — the only place where I could really call somewhere home. I had to make my own way without him. Don't you understand?"

something something noodling on buck and eddie and forced boundaries. this is word salad btw with no real argument but hopefully its a side that not too many people have written. (written before 8x03-06 airing. so if im completely wrong there will be egg on my face and that is okay because almost nothing is unequivocally true in creative media analysis world.) and also this is super long sorry
i keep thinking about the way they merge buck and eddie's storylines in 7x05, not just on screen in their encounter at the restaurant, but thematically.
first, a really important part of the buck and eddie dynamic is that the two are having an intense emotional affair, and have been since season 3. but, they've always operated across the lines of plausible deniability and they're both likely oblivious to this. they're both "straight." so, anything they do can be chalked up to normalbestfriendbehavior, because there's no way they'd ever physically cheat with each other. they both consider that to be the threshold for cheating, as evidenced by buck and eddie's agreeance that he is not cheating on marisol with kim because they haven't had sex.
7x05 is titled "you don't know me," and that's the central theme for everyone. the episode is mostly about hen and karen, but also continues to weave buck, eddie, and tommy together.
there's the "eddie doesn't know about buck's sexuality exploration and buck feels guilty about this" aspect, but this applies to eddie's solo storyline too.
eddie finds out that marisol used to be a nun. he claims that this has unearthed his catholic guilt, but we know that it never really went away for him, it just became easier for him to repress himself. eddie, even though he claims to not be actively a believer, knows that he is lying to himself about being into marisol, and thinks that god has sent him a reminder that he's watching him. even if he doesn't consciously understand that it's because he's not into women as a whole, he realized his tendency to stay in relationships where he's not happy from his breakup with ana. so he Has to know that he's not genuinely in it. this is also why buck's pointing out that she voluntarily left the convent doesn't bring him any comfort- because he's already decided that marisol is a direct link to god and His disappointment in eddie (as evidenced by his vision of marisol as the virgin mary)
eddie can't have sex with her anymore, the one activity that, to him, proves he's at least attracted to his partner. he's fully prepared to break up with marisol over this, and even hides out at buck's.
buck doesn't realize this at the time because he's too focused on his own guilt, but eddie is looking for his approval to break up with marisol. eddie always does what buck thinks is best for him. he makes the excuse that it's because they're best friends and he trusts his opinion, but i think he knows there's something more to it.
but buck can't give him his approval. because buck cannot fathom that eddie is offering himself up because the idea of marisol is standing between them. the two of them are similar in this way, and that's why they're so fascinating: they're both extremely passive in their romantic pursuits because they lack 1. self esteem and 2. awareness to pursue what they actually want. buck because of his childhood/past relationships and eddie because of his upbringing/grief/repression
buck (and also eddie, but specifically buck) is a huge flirt. however, he'll rarely cross the boundary of platonic activity before the other person does (i genuinely think the last time was abby, but that was his first relationship so its weird hybrid of active and passive tendencies).
he'll flirt and flirt until the other person makes a move, i.e. asking him out or kissing him. he wants them to prove they're choosing him. once they do, he clings. they broke this pattern with his breakup from taylor (even though i consider that a special circumstance) and natalia by having buck leave them, but T may be a return to form. more on that later...
eddie offers himself to buck by letting him choose if he should break up with marisol. buck is oblivious to it because he's too focused on his own guilt of keeping a part of himself "unknown" from eddie. buck confesses about tommy. eddie does not comment on buck's sexuality, he is only surprised at tommy's. buck looks for reassurance there: is it weird that i was on a date with a man? eddie, in his attempt to offer comfort, re-draws the line between them: "this doesn't change a thing between us." what he means is that he's not weirded out, but what buck hears is "i'm straight, so don't even try it."
so, when eddie, who is subconsciously looking for buck to step over the line, asks him about what he thinks he should do, buck doubles down on wanting tommy. eddie, hearing the message, encourages buck to try again. eddie goes home and hits the restart button on his relationship with marisol. he convinces himself that maybe if they start over, it'll work this time.
he tells her that he feels like he doesn't know her well and that they moved too fast. normally, people in this type of situation would just move on and find someone else. but instead, eddie is desperate to stay in this relationship with marisol because buck has stepped over the line of plausible deniability in their relationship, and drawn a new one. buck is officially attracted to men. if eddie's relationship falls apart and buck is not with someone else, the lines start to blur.
later, buck and T get coffee. tommy points out that the two of them don't know anything about each other. they agree to start their relationship and do it "right." the same way eddie and marisol agree to reset theirs.
and the two of them cling to these relationships. marisol ends her and eddie's relationship after finding out about kim. buck remains with tommy despite awkward dates, likely because he is also excited to explore himself (as he is one to do) but also likely because he walked close to that line when he came out to eddie, and felt like he was pushed back.
but i think the sentiment of "you don't know me" really applies for buck and T's relationship as a whole. again, they started with buck flirting and toeing the line until T stepped over it by kissing him, then asking him out.
there's a whole lot of discourse on here and twitter about t's awkward flirting, flippant attitude, and dismissive comments. the thing about this is, likely none of it is tommy purposely trying to hurt buck. tommy does not know buck. he doesn't know that these are things that he is sensitive about, or that hurts him. and buck doesn't communicate when he's uncomfortable. he just internalizes it and focuses on trying to make his partners stay. and tommy will not know buck. buck ingratiates tommy in his life by inviting him to family events, but he doesn't actually open up to tommy or tell him when he's misreading him. it gives both of them a sense of false intimacy.
they're three months in at least, and tommy and buck are still, as oliver said, "getting to know each other." but they both agreed to "get to know each other" and go for it at their coffee date, and here they are months later. not having moved... i hope that holding back his own baggage is going to bite buck in the ass just as much as tommy's past is.
(and by god i hope it is tommy's racist past that gets revealed because FUCK him. but based on what oliver said about buck weighing if he should make it work im not sure they're going to address it. bc if buck found that out i do think he'd end the relationship w little/no debate)
but this is all very interesting to me.. personally i want to see buck explore his sexuality on his own for a little because i think it would be beautiful and he deserves that but i do think he is going to be a little desperate to stay in this relationship if they don't go the gerrard/tommy past route.. but god buck and eddie are so awesomely freakish about each other sometimes

Spotted: The first round of arrivals for my Halloween party! I gotta say, all the looks are amazing so far and I can't wait to see what you all bring for this marvelous event! Bonnie giving everyone with arachophobia chills with her Spider Queen-esque costume. Patrick bringing the chills with his frozen Mount Everest Climber costume. Emersyn looking hot as hell with her Wilma Flinstone costume. Tanner looking dashing as the Pahnton of the Opera. Juliette looking like she'll leave a bite mark or two on someone (Damon) with her Rosalie Cullen costume. Paco looking like he's about to get his bed rocked in his matching costume to Emersyn. Did the two plan it or is it just a coincidence? Damon looking like he'll match Juliette's bite with his Emmett Cullen costume. Mariana looking very hot in her pirate costume. Rosalie looking exactly how you'd expect a college girl to look if she dressed up as a fiary. Alexa bringing a whole new meaning to the name 'Darling' with her Wendy Draling costume. Marisol bringing all the nightmares by dressing up as Pennywise. Emma looking beautiful as Morticia Addams. Atlas, of course, matching his fiance as Gomez Addams and we're not surprised by this couple's costume at all. Brooke looking like a zombie I would not want to face at all. Pogue rounding out the first round of looks as another scary zombie.
Keep the looks coming!

“Was this a lifelong dream?” Birdie’s well acquainted with the idea of wanting to run away to the circus, she’d been one of those kinds of children after all. Her sister and her had tried it, once, at the age of seven. They’d only gotten a few blocks before running out of snacks and having to return to their parents, though. “I mean - clowns are super cool but I always thought it was difficult. Being away from family is hard, isn’t it?”

God led Rose to the desert for a reason, and Rose thinks that reason is Marisol.
"I like sweet tea," she says, referencing black teabags steeped, gratuitous sugar added, and the whole thing poured over ice. "But you don't gotta make nothing for me. I just — wanted to say hey."
She smiles brightly. She wants to be here very, very badly.

She's IN!!!
But how will she mesh with the rest of the Up Late With Miss Piggy writing team, really?
Will she foster friendships with her new Muppet coworkers? Romance, even?
And most importantly: will Zoot EVER remember her name??
Stay tuned, dear readers... 👀

a few notes on the use of POV storytelling and how it relates to eddie in 704 and what i’m on the lookout for in 705—
i just can’t get over how SILLY eddie is in this past episode. and for a split second i was like, god this is so out of character for him like he’s usually not really like this. but it clicked for me when the B storyline was happening that we were watching athena/hen/chim totally normally, but the A plot was literally only happening through bucks eyes.
And then that made me think of SKAM (i’m always thinking of skam let’s be real) which is a TV show that uses POV storytelling to put us in the eyes of a different character every season, so sometimes certain side characters can act different or seem to have a change in personality during different seasons because we’re seeing them through another persons eyes.
and then i realized, this is eddie through bucks eyes. even when he’s angry and seething with jealousy, eddie is just this ball of sunlight and happiness. which makes sense !! eddie brings so much joy and light into bucks life it makes sense that buck would see him bathed in golden light and full of love all the time. when we watch the show from the audience side we see brooding ex vet eddie diaz who has a secret silly side sometimes, but when we’re thrown into bucks pov he becomes a ray of fucking SUNSHINE who is always smiling and cute.
this would also make sense because certain things eddie did seemed over dramatic, like how giddy he was on the phone call or just how angry he looked when he got hurt. eddie has been shot MULTIPLE times, i feel like the ankle sprain was overdone to show us how BUCK felt more than how eddie felt.
and then in terms of next episode, i think it will be very telling how the show chooses to portray eddie. from the promo it seems like we’re still getting buck pov eddie during the date because… in what world would eddie diaz scream like that in a public place akfjsk but when we see his scenes with marisol i would venture to bet that he’s back to totally normal eddie. i just love pov storytelling so much and i wish it was used in mainstream tv more so this episode was REALLY fun for me!

Reminder guys that just because Ryan calls Eddie straight in his current interviews doesn’t mean he is. In the first place Ryan can’t just give away stuff that hasn’t happened yet and as far as canon goes right now Eddie is straight. Let’s not forget that Buck was perceived as straight by the media and most of the general audience before he came out.
The fact that they are allowing Ryan and Oliver to continue to answer questions about Buddie at all is huge because they don’t have to. I don’t know if some of you were around in fandom years ago but we never got this much talk about Buddie and if we did it wasn’t always these continued answers of like “it needs to be a natural progression for them to get there”. It was more like “we appreciate the fans and we’re open to it”. Buddie is clearly in the works and they’re trying not give it away.
Also listen to how Ryan talks when asked about Buddie, he said he lives moment to moment with Eddie right now another clear indication that in this moment this is what’s going on with Eddie. Aka he’s straight and he’s dealing with all the Kim/Marisol stuff but by next season Eddie could be realizing he’s not as straight as he initially thought.
Most importantly remember that the actors don’t write the scripts. All that matters is that Ryan, Oliver, Tim, and ABC are all supportive of Buddie and are open to it happening and they’ve all expressed that they are.
It would just be really stupid for the show to not take advantage of a couple they know could garner them so much more attention and ratings. Not to mention the more important fact of just how groundbreaking a slow burn queer couple like Buddie coming together will be. I think everyone involved understands the gravity of all of it. They’re just trying to take their time with Buddie’s story and tell it right because they only have one chance to do that.
Also don’t pay any attention to what B/T shippers say about this interview because no doubt they’ll use what Ryan said as a way to try and prove Buddie is never happening and their ship is endgame. Trust and believe even if T*mmy sticks around until s8 Buck’s forever love is not going to be him. Buck is almost like the central character on this show, Tim is for sure going to give him an epic love story and was already trying to put Buddie in the works back in season 4. Buck might be dating T*mmy right now but it’s clear that his heart has always been with Eddie (and Chris).

Buddie? BT? Doesn't matter.
Maybe this isn't how the writers wanted or expected their work to be interpreted, but people pull from RL situations and experience to infer and understand.
As a rational woman of more than 20 years of life on this planet, I've seen and experienced a lot. (Some of that experience is being dated by someone without having a clue they were dating me. Eddie Diaz is not alone. Sadly.) So, here is my interpretation.
1- Tommy was trying to date Eddie. Tommy is not bi, confused, closeted, or shy. He is an out gay man who immediately began monopolizing Eddie's attention and time. Your middle class new friend of a week or two is not flying you to Vegas unless he is trying to get into your pants within the next two weeks. Tommy was trying to impress Eddie and show off. That is not platonic. Tommy wanted Eddie in the naked and moaning type way. You can see his attraction in the way he follows Eddie with his eyes while cheesing when they land after rescuing the cruise ship. Tommy never once looks at Buck until Buck grabs him. Which leads to...
2- Buck was trying to do two things, subconsciously, at once, but for different reasons. Buck was trying to get Tommy's attention off Eddie and get Eddie's attention back onto himself. Eddie had no clue because he didn't even see Tommy was courting him. (I read an A/B/O fic and that word has stuck. Sue me.) Buck couldn't see he was jealous of Tommy and angry at Eddie because he felt he was being tossed aside. Don't forget, this is a Buck who was fresh out of a relationship and watching Eddie get serious with Marisol. In Buck's mind, Eddie was already being taken by Marisol and now Tommy was poaching him, too.
3- Tommy was not into Buck. He took a convenient option that presented itself. That is why that kiss is so sudden, impulsive, and UNSURE. Tommy knew Eddie was a lost cause. But then Buck is begging for attention and right there. So, Tommy made a decision to test the waters and see what happened.
4- Tommy also figured out that he could lead Buck around easily. Remember how their first date was set up? Remember Tommy kicking Buck to the curb literally, but coming back quickly when Buck called begging for a second chance? To young people and people who have never been in relationships, those are classic emotionally manipulative power moves. You can say what you want, but Tommy has figured Buck out and knows how to control the narrative.
If the writers went with sexual identity crisis Eddie, oblivious Buck, and opportunistic and manipulative Tommy, they could easily support all three with canon. Not fanon. CANON.
Bonus: Eddie is shocked Tommy is gay but isn't phased by Buck liking a man. Sure, it throws him a bit when Buck confesses he was on a date with Tommy, but Eddie is completely flabbergasted by Tommy being gay. That explains why he didn't realize Tommy was trying to get at that glorious behind. (For the rest, go back and watch the confession scene. Look for the micro-expressions. Share what you pick up.)
NOTE: I chose not to tag anything in the BuckTommy fandom. Please do not add tags or reblog to that fandom.

Everything Ryan says is so considered and interesting I’m obsessed with him!
Tumblr media
His language is so loaded - and gives so many clues about is arc! Machismo and not talking about feelings - ties back to hero complex and his relationship with his father - but also his mother - especially his mother - because she was actually a big part of creating that culture in the diaz house - because Ramon was ‘never there’
Him saying Eddie has spent the last few seasons trying to re-navigate and take new directions but whilst still being the old version of himself - so loud and informative. The play on the Shannon of it all - and the repeating mistakes in new ways. The not allowing himself to actually move on and let go of his ghosts.
That’s also loaded in the other direction as well - this idea that it’s not just him still stuck as this old version of himself - it’s not just him that’s not allowing himself to move on - that the people who represent his past are still holding onto the old him as well - his parents - it’s a statement about how they view him - and ties into the theme of Eddie begins - the idea his parents think they know best and want to dictate how he lives his life - the insistence he should come home or that they should take Chris. Something that’s been brought back into focus with Chris leaving to stay with them. It’s the idea that Eddie us work to do about getting them to recognise and accept the person he is and wants to be - and not to keep treating him as they always have done.
reworking his idealisations of the past brought up with his learnings of the present - and the earlier reference to the 118 and the firefam teaching him stuff. This especially implies what he’s learnt about love - and that what he sees of that with the firefam is vastly different to his experiences of it back in Texas - and with Shannon as well. The Shannon part of it Particularly - it all speaks to Eddie having been wearing rose tinted glasses and putting his relationship with Shannon up onto a sort of pedastal.
Implement is an interesting word choice as well in connection with this. It indicates slow change rather than drastic change - the idea of growth and of not rushing to be fixed and healed.
Idealisation is a direct play on the catholic faith - it’s a play on idolism and
Learnings of the present is also a choice - present can be taken to read all of Eddie’s time in LA - but it infers especially the more recent past - so season 7. Why would Eddie be prepared to implement learnings of the present now at this point. It’s not just the loss of Chris from LA and his home. It’s a big part of it yes, but Season 7 is when so many things converge. It’s the glasses being removed when it comes to Shannon - the break through that’s been brewing. It’s also being confronted with religion and its long lasting impact on who he is. I’ve always found it to be particularly interesting that they chose to have Eddie start dating a diy-er who was a former almost nun. The idea of faith being something under construction (yes the construction on sunset metaphor never goes away) and something you build for yourself rather than how Catholicism is a prefabricated and built by others faith. The juxtaposition of the church - something with the weight of history attached to it and an inability to move with the times and change - and the concept of diy faith being something you construct and build to suit you - the updating of something so that it fits with where you are at now. Marisol is a lesson in choosing to not stick with the status quo if it doesn’t fit, and instead building what you want your life to look like from the foundations that pre-existing faith has given you. It gives rise to the idea that eddies present learning is in part that he can construct a life that fits him and he doesn’t have to mould himself to what someone else prescribed. That he can take the bits of his faith that he does like and build those into something that suits him.
But it’s also Buck - Buck making his own break through and figuring out this big part of himself and choosing to embrace it in season 7 is a part of giving Eddie the confidence to do that for himself. It’s not just about the buddie of it all. The very deliberate decision by the writers to have Eddie be the one Buck is the most concerned about coming out to - the one he intentionally tells in a 1-1 situation and have that be much of the focus of bucks arc in the immediate aftermath of his bi awakening is as much about Buck as it is about Eddie. Buck coming out to Eddie allows the spiral he’s in about his catholic guilt to take on a different direction and ultimately spiral out much further into something that blows up his life. It’s Eddie’s subconscious - his repressed inner self beginning to break free.
Tumblr media
This quote also backs this up - the implication being that his relationships have all failed because they were built on a version of religion and spirituality that doesn’t fit with who Eddie is at his core. Referencing that Latino culture is built on Catholicism and that isn’t the actual bedrock of Latino culture is interesting. He also references the Mayans when talking about this and pre colonialisation mesoamerica. (This shows that Ryan is well read and thinks deeply on his heritage). That in combination is interesting as a concept for Eddie. The idea that who he is at his core is actually different to the person he has ended up becoming - implying that the true Eddie is hidden beneath a history that has been imposed on him - in the same way that the culture and faith of the mayans was buried and repressed when the Spanish invaded and conquered Mexico and much of South America.
Using the word ‘wrongly’ infers that Eddie is going to choose to reveal and embrace that repressed version of himself - the version of himself that is his truest form. I already made a post about the Mayan aspect of Ryan’s interview, but I will point it out here as well. The Mayan culture embraced homosexuality, it was an accepted way of life and largely viewed in favourable light and it was in fact a major part of many religious ceremonies and in the healing of people by shamans. So along with everything else I’ve said above, that’s hinting pretty heavily at Eddie’s arc leading to him embracing his queer identity.
