Betelgeuse and Astrid "Death" Parallel

I'm not sure what else to call this observation/rambling, but I've been thinking a lot about the events of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and on my most recent viewing, I noticed something super satisfying about this scene. You know, other than the obvious.

We all know Beej is not one to turn down a deal, least of all when it involves his own self-interest. And of course, it's very advantageous for him to rescue the daughter of the woman whose heart he's trying desperately to win. But there's another delicious layer to him being the one to personally dispose of Jeremy Fraizer...

Betelgeuse knows exactly what it's like to be manipulated by love, only to then have your life taken from you.

Delores manipulated him under the guise of love to steal his life (and his soul) to gain immortality, the same way that Jeremy pretended to care for Astrid so that he could ultimately take her life for his own.

It's think pretty accurate to assume that neither Delores nor Jeremy felt anything genuine for their victims. They were a means to an end. But where Betelgeuse had to defend himself on his own, unable to reverse what had been done, Astrid was not alone. While she was preoccupied with running from the afterlife authorities, reuniting with her father, and getting some much-needed family closure, there was someone else looking out for her.

Enter our anti-hero.

We don't get any direct insight into Beej's thoughts on the Jeremy situation, but it probably struck a nerve for him. He would never admit it, but how could it not? We already know he's privy to Rory's manipulation of Lydia and is eager to expose him, but this is not about a toxic, gold-digging relationship. This is literally life and death. It follows that he would be just as if not more upset to learn that a murderous wolf in sheep's clothing was trying to kill Lydia's daughter, especially given the nature of his own death.

(I mean c'mon, he used his one PG-13 ordained f-bomb on the guy. I think it's safe to say he felt pretty strongly about Jeremy's villainy.)

We all know how it plays out in the end, but I think it's rather poetic that Beej is able to avenge his 'would-be stepdaughter' and save her from a devious scheme very similar to the one that he fell prey to.

He couldn't get his own life back from Delores (though arguably he does, at least metaphorically, in the finale), but he was able to give Astrid back hers.

So there you have it. Now that I see the parallels, it's ten times more vindicating that Betelgeuse was the one that got to send that slimeball to hell. And let's be honest: Beej would probably agree.

Headcanon: Betelgeuse somehow beyond their notice orchestrated the Maitlands finding the loophole that allowed them to move on. This gets them out of the way so that they are no longer obstacles on his path to Lydia.

My random Beetlejuice headcanons

It's taken me a few days to write the next chapter of my fic, because it has very heavy content. I'm breaking for a moment with some of my headcanons that I've used in my fics. Some are a bit spicy so be warned:

He's a dangerous driver because he doesn't respect laws nor fears death.

Don't you dare talk badly about Lydia online or he WILL troll you into the next dimension! His roasts are legendary, and his Twitter is fire.

Under normal circumstances, Beetlejuice is the kind of guy who views sex as a race to the finish where the woman loses. "A female orgasm isn't necessary for reproduction. If God doesn't care, why should I?" But when it comes to Lydia, he's a very generous lover and always wants to make sure she has a good time before he does.

He always views Astrid as his daughter, without a shadow of a doubt. And he's willing to do anything to bond and win her favor. Including going to environmental protests with her or scaring bullies at school.

He either sleeps nude or wears boxers with the Batman logo printed on them.

When he's at the urinal he drops his pants to his ankles so everyone can see his hairy, moldy ass and it makes everyone in the bathroom super uncomfortable.

Lydia makes him shower to wash the mold and grave dirt off him, but it grows back the next day.

His "juice" glows in the dark, is off green, and tastes like that Beetlejuice Fanta. He can make it taste like anything, but he thinks that rancid apple flavor is appealing to Lydia. It isn't.

One body part has sandworm stripes and measures at 7.5 inches. He can also change the curve and other wacky shit.

He has mommy issues resulting in letting dark haired fair skinned women dominate him in bed.

He has an eclectic taste in music, but if you ask him his response is "Honey, I listen to anything that gets me laid."

He prefers his women "all natural" since he came from a time where ladies didn't shave anything.

Lydia is absolutely CRAZY about his blonde body hair, and she jokingly calls him "blondie" which he hates.

If he's home alone he has no problems walking around the house naked. He views his body as "God's gift to women."

Totally willing to do it in public situations, like when Lydia's at work or in the backseat of the car.

Okay, I looked up the height difference between Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton... It's about 14 cm (~5,5 inches). This means that Beetlejuice is about half a head taller than Lydia. And I imagined cute headcanons.

Of course, when kissing you can just lean in/extend your neck, but that's too easy. But what about "Spider-Man Kiss"? Imagine Lydia going about her daily business with Beetlejuice following her around, constantly teasing her. At one point she can't take it anymore and throws her head back, dreaming of at least hitting him. And it turns out to be as close as possible to his face. Beetlejuice sees Astrid passing by, gives Lydia a quick kiss, and flies off into the air laughing. Astrid shakes her head, smiling involuntarily. Lydia can't help but smile, too.

You know that situation when you can't reach the top shelf? Beetlejuice is always ready to help Lydia and just lift her up, but she doesn't agree because Beetlejuice really likes to bury his nose in her neck and not let go. I don't know, but for some reason it seems to me that he really loves hugs.

Oh yeah, hugs. I don't remember if it was canon that ghosts themselves are cold? Because at this point Beetlejuice likes to warm up with her hugs. Sometimes Lydia has moments of fatigue when she just doesn't know what to do next. At first, Beetlejuice tries to amuse her with all sorts of jokes (okay, throwing Rory's things off the balcony was funny), but if that doesn't help, he snaps his fingers. A soft chair appears... and a bunch of flying candles in the shape of Beetlejuice himself. Okay, I think I overdid it. BUT IMAGINE HER SITTING AND HIS HEAD LAYING ON HER SHOULDER. Sorry, I love fluff too much and I'm afraid of misinterpreting the characters-

And a few more thoughts without reference to height. Astrid often jokingly refers to Beetlejuice as her stepfather, mentioning that they're quite similar. For a long time, Lydia couldn't imagine herself with him even as a couple, but Beetlejuice's concern for Astrid helped her change her mind. In the end, they made a pretty good family.

Beetlejuice would probably like to live a little longer. It's not my idea, but he could marry Lydia so he can become human and grow old with her. Lydia definitely won't believe that he's willing to lose everything he had in the Afterlife.

would have nightmares of/about Betelgeuse and be awoken and comforted by Barbara & Adam

learned how to play the piano 

grew distant with Delia and Charles for a short period of time, where she rarely interacted or talked to them outside of having dinner together when she was forced to

started seeing ghosts wherever she went, some of which terrified her. she’d end up in the counselor’s office at school due to outbursts of “visions”

she was bullied in school because of it, and when she refused to go to therapy recommended by her parents and teachers, Delia forced her to get out of the house and spend time with other girls in her classes as a distraction

Lydia found that the type of ghosts she sees (how scary or non-scary they look) vary based on her emotional state. Barbara & Adam were the only ones that ever stay consistent through them all

on one of the days Lydia was with the girls group, they locked her in a closet with a light switch on the outside and repetitively turned the lights on and off as a joke to her seeing ghosts. every time the lights came on, Lydia would see a new ghost, and because she was stressed, anxious, and panicked, all those that appeared were violently and/or gruesomely presented

she never trusted anyone after that, aside from her parents and the Maitlands. And then she met Richard…

she and Astrid get much closer as mother and daughter. like that wasn’t obvious

isn’t scared of much in regards to ghosts or demons, but she still can’t stand snakes, since Beetlegeuse’s rattlesnake mutant from her adolescence. she knows it was him, but that thing’s fucking terrifying

is very welcoming of who Astrid brings home, but has the over-protective instinct of seeing and hearing everything, even when the teens don’t think she does

she exploits, embarrasses, and calls Astrid out for shits and giggles

she’s prefers cats to dogs. she makes friends with all the feral cats around, especially the black ones 

is always down for a Halloween movie night!

HEADCANON TIME BCUZ I WANT YOU TO FEEL BETTER

Adam and Barbara both know how to sew, and they both made little dolls of themselves for Beetlejuice to hold on to. Both dolls have a little packet of stuff that reminds Beetlejuice of their scents and they are also weighted!!

One time, Beetlejuice and Lydia went to the beach. Beetlejuice dug a hole and laid in it, while Lydia covered him with a blanket. They put a cup of French fries over the towel and spent all afternoon trying to catch a seagull.

The Shoggoth once drank some shampoo “just to see what it would taste like”. Cue Barbara and Adam frantically trying to wash its mouth out. Every time it tried to talk, all that would come out was garbled words and bubbles.

Beetlejuice kicks in his sleep. The only thing that calms him down is Adam or Barbara petting his hair

Here’s a Beetlejuice Beetlejuice fanfic/chatfic and headcannons I wrote because I was bored and the ghost characters need more recognition (minor spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice)

BEETLEJUICE CHATFIC AND CHARACTER HEADCANNONS

BeetleJuice BeetleJuice character headcannons! (Also don’t mind all the super smash bros headcannons, I was watching Blake jennings “what your main in smash says about you” while I made these):

Wolf Jackson the movie star:

◦ Has MAJOR former theatre kid vibes, like he totally had a Hamilton phase and watched Cats ATLEAST once just to make fun of it, but he ended up secretly kinda liking the songs from it.

◦ Wont admit to even HAVING a favourite superhero, but it’s totally Spider Noir

◦ Says he mains someone like Snake in smash, but he actually mains Isabelle, jigglepuff, or The duck hunt dog and he somehow wins EVERY TIME HE PLAYS SMASH because he’s good at spam pressing buttons.

◦ Good at claw machines for some reason. A strange hidden talent, but he probs brags about it every chance he gets (which isn’t often but still)

◦ Everyone thinks/assumes he’s straight and probs bangin his secretary/the girl who brings him coffee (idk if she’s actually his secretary) but then he’ll casually insert “my boyfriend” or “this guy I’m seeing” into a conversation and the whole room is shocked.

◦ Knuckle cracker.

◦ When he’s sad infront of other people he hides his emotions and says he’s fine, but when he’s sad at home alone, he curls up with a bunch of blankets and binge watches all the movies he stared in when he was alive. Only his secretary(?) knows this.

◦ Drinks coffee (obviously) but also likes iced teas. Can on rare occasions be seen wandering around with an Arizona Tea can in hand.

◦ Ocean from RTC vibes. Like he doesn’t really mean to be rude, but he also has a habit of thinking he’s better than most people around him.

◦ That same way that I walk into any store and when I wanna get something I tell myself “I can make that at home.” He watches ANY action movie (especially ones with cgi or heavy effects) and says/thinks “I could’ve done that MYSELF, WITHOUT special affects.”

Bob:

◦ Chronically tired

◦ Under-appreciated-employee-core. Wherever he works in the neitherworld would not FUNCTION without him, but no one who works with him would recognize this until he put in his two weeks notice.

◦ A pushover. I hate to say it, but this man DIED (double died ig?) for a ghost who didn’t deserve that amount of loyalty and Bob probably knows it. He knew Beetlejuice wasn’t worth sacrificing that much for but he did it anyways because he is a pushover.

◦ My general headcannon for all the “tiny head” people in the Beetlejuice franchise is that they can speak telepathically to people, but most either choose not to, or don’t know that they can do it. Bob chooses not to because whenever he does (on rare occasions) it freaks out everyone who’s ever known him and he finds it hilarious.

◦ Current theatre kid. Has all of Heathers memorized. Could sing most RTC songs and says “this is all your fault Jafar” and “youre FUCKIN useless Paul” in his head or under his breath EVERY DAY.

◦ Once played Smash with Wolf Jackson and absolutely HATED the fact that Wolf won every time without really trying. But also Bob mains wii fit trainer, toon link or Kirby because I said so.

◦ Coffee drinker, but also gives off “DO NOT FILL UP A “SUPER BIG GULP” CUP WITH 5-HOUR ENERGY AND CHUG THE WHOLE THING” vibes. He is WIRED.

Harry the hunter:

◦ Bobs uncle who died at around the same age as Bob so that’s why they look the same age/look like the same person.

◦ BESTIES with Ms Argentina

◦ Likes Delores because he hates Beetlejuice and wishes she successfully killed him, but also dislikes her because she killed Bob

◦ Bob is chronically tired but gets a good nights sleep most nights. Harry is an insomniac night owl who stays up until 1:00 in the morning rewatching Over the garden wall or Wall E for the 1000th time even though he KNOWS has to get up at 5:00am that morning.

◦ Only drinks tea or water.

◦ Mostly uses ASL or writing on notepads to communicate (same with Bob)

◦ Bob is the type of employee to work more than he should and do extra stuff and overtime etc. because he thinks people will like him more or atleast he’ll get some benefit from it right? Harry is the employee who knows you should just do your job and leave because no one will care if you do more than that so don’t waste your time.

◦ Just like Bob, he is a theatre kid. And he totally got Ms Argentina into musicals too.

My favorite headcanon: Lydia's birthday is on November 2nd (Día de Muertos)

I know some people will say "oh but it's better if it's Halloween because it's the spooky holiday uuhhh" And I accept that. But I prefer to think of that other date because of the "spiritual" meaning it brings with it.

I feel the most profound date for her, since it is a day to connect with those who are no longer close by. Dedicating at least one day to remember them with affection and thank them for life. Because more than monsters, they are beings that when they die will leave a mark on someone and that's touching. I still know that it is a Latin American holiday (mainly Mexican), I like to think about it that way.
