Just a little stepdad!Betelgeuse and stepdaughter!Astrid idea/headcanon for you tonight:

Imagine Astrid came back with ghostly powers from the Netherworld after BJBJ, like we've been speculating here recently, and, with Lydia unable (or unwilling??) to help her navigate this one power in particular, she resorts to calling Betelgeuse for help. That power: remote possession of the living, just like the Maitlands did, and just like Betelgeuse did in BJBJ.

I can understand why Lydia would want Astrid to push this one down. One thing's a ghost taking over another person, but a living person making other living people move to her will? Kinda scary! It could go wrong in so many ways! Lydia would probably struggle to come to terms with it, at least for a while. And that's why this idea is so interesting to me, tbh! There's a lot there to explore: questions of morality, "just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should", etc.

Astrid takes no shit from no one, but she does have some students "bullying" her at school that get on her nerves. What other perfect targets to practice her new powers on? 😂 Imagine the chaotic duo of Betelgeuse and Astrid controlling the people who bully Astrid at school with their ghosty powers, both of them hiding in the bushes dressed in camo outfits, staring with binoculars from afar while their targets make complete fools out of themselves. Betelgeuse doesn't exactly have a moral compass to think "these are just kids, shouldn't mess with them like this", and that's exactly why Astrid thinks "yep, he's the only one who can really help me learn to use this power". Anyway, that'd be totally hilarious. Wait until Lydia finds out what they're up to. lol

No, but, hear me out, what if Astrid goes dark side with these new powers and THEN Lydia and Beej have to work together to get her back? And Beej almost sacrifices himself (or sacrifices something important to him... gonna have to think that one over, but hear me out), he has to sacrifice something and do everything he can to right this wrong. He did help Astrid out, and things went horribly wrong and it's mostly his fault. He goes above and beyond to save her and it finally shows without any doubt that his actions are not selfish; that he really does love Lydia and her family.

Anyway, going way too cartoon plot with this last part, maybe, but I love this idea. 😂

I feel like the Maitlands do not get considered enough when discussing how Lydia talks and thinks about Beetlejuice in the second movie.

Obviously Beej had pretty neutral experiences with Lyds up until a sandworm ate him in the first film.

And for Lydia she has had some net negative experiences with him. Snake assults her fam, tries to con her into marrying him befor she realized he is a snake, actually almost made a child bride to bring him back to life and he kind of attacks the two people who he agreed to help in the process. This is all to say she would obvs be trepidatious around Beetlejuice.

But then you have to think about the fact that she probably lived with the Maitlands for a long time. They probably would have discussed him and how he is a sex pest, unconrolable, trickster demon. How he was black listed from the afterlife, his old job. Like having details filled in on this kind of scary guy probably instilled a greater sense of distrust in him than there needed to be.

In the first movie he is a violent, eratic, horny, creep to basically all the adults. He jumps on people, kisses them without warning, puts them in situations that can cause greivous bodily harm. And Lydia he mostly leaves alone until he realizes she can see him and then he only proposes a marrage of inconvinience becasue he doesn't want to be dead.

I the snake scene she is left alone and in the wedding scene she he grabs her arms to manuver her through the wedding and covers her mouth so she won't say his name. Meanwhile he is doing loonytoons ass stuff to everyone else.

This is all to say that the Maitlands might have instilled a greater sense of danger and misstrust around BJ over the years. It would also explain why she is kind of clueless to the flirty hauntings he sends her way like the flyer, pop up ads, and even the love song. Like this is probably just part of his sleezy creep schtick and not an ernest yet deranged attempt at getting a girls attention.

The McArthor Park scene probably hit her like a tone of bricks. Oh zombie Bugs Bunny might actually like me and not just want to get married for life privilages. When did that happen.

Ideas for the Astrid Juice fic that might happen. Marking Dead Dove: Do Not Eat to be safe:

The more I think about it the more I like it. So far the premise is that Beej and Lydia’s first wedding actually does go through and he blips away with her as soon as he’s “free”.

Lydia is missing for a couple years. The Maitlands try to find out if Juno has any information on how to get her back but because the Juice is Loose, he’s able to evade capture. Lydia’s parents stay in Winter River because, despite not being great parents or people, they hope that Lydia will return or she’ll be found because at the end of the day, they do genuinely love her and want her safe. It’s a terrible time where these 4 people, dead and living, cope with their “loss”.

One clichéd dark and stormy night however, Adam and Barbara answer the door to find Lydia waiting for them. They rush to her aid, getting her inside and cleaning her up. And it’s when they’re trying to clean all the grime off of her and get her warm that they see she’s pregnant. And she’s not keen on getting rid of the baby, despite everything that’s happened.

The reunion is complicated. They literally have no idea what a human and a poltergeist could conceive. Of course it turns out the baby is definitely a paranormal little demon but… they’ll make it work.

Hopefully.

A few details:

• I’ll age Lydia up to at least 17 at the time of marriage. Yes she’s still underage but when I first saw the movie, I thought she was 17.

• This might be more of a Found Family fic, but Beetlebabes still applies

• Lydia’s pregnancy cravings are juice and bugs, because I can’t resist how stupid that is. It makes me laugh. Wondering if I can add in the Deetz fam getting a bulky home computer and have them try to mail order bugs through dial-up internet.

• I want to find a way for Astrid to “grow out of” her demonic behaviors. She still has an immense amount of power and traits inherited from her father, but she assimilates to human life relatively well.

• Heavy implications that Beetlejuice is NOT happy about his wife and child being kept from him. He’s probably being contained somewhere so as to not raise anymore hell, but if/when he does get out, shit will hit the fan.

Some fun with Lucy, Simon, and my pal @lovelylivelyv 's Bent Halos shipchild OC, Jack Nephalem!

1 and 2: Some sparring sessions between Lucy and Jack. Since Jack lives in The Cycle where creatures sometimes attack no matter who you are and Lucy having learned self defense from her parents (and being half monster, I thought it might be fun to play with these two friends sparring together. Both of them being Addams-esque cartoony monster hybrids, I figured they'd be the type to playfully rib eachother while sparring. First shows Hijack pinning Lucy down and making a Beetlejuice/Dark revival joke while Lucy calls him a dork, and Lucy unleashing her inner Ericka (and Gomez) pinning Jack to the ground and critiquing his form. Jack responds with an animation/"Not in the book" joke. Don't worry, he's fine. Matter of fact, he likes having a gal pal who can throw him around and is 500% not scared of him.

Bonus: Imagine this with their voice claims: Alex Brightman from the musical Beetlejuice (Jack) and Sarah Sherman from SNL (Lucy.) Also, heck yes Bendy, Alice, Ericka, Possibly Drac, Mavis, and the rest of the Ink Fam are watching this and cheering on their kids like the proud parents/family members they are.

3. Simon gets in on the sparring session! He takes things much more seriously than his sister and relies more on strength, weapons, and strategy than martial arts or acrobatics. but accepts his pal Jack's friendly playful jibes, even though he's more focused on whether Jack can break through his hold. I reference a later pic here, Since Simon is a big shy good boi who's secretly badass, I show Jack commenting on his improvement from being scared as a kid by saying "Boris grew up to be Brute Boris."

Bonus: I finally came up with a possible Simon Voiceclaim: David Cross.

4. Jack and Lucy singing Kyle Allen's Recording Town! This is somewhat inspired by going through @creation-help 's posts while listening to it. Thought this would be fun to draw these two playful dramatic fucks singing this song. I could see them knocking it out of the park. This was kind of an interesting pose to crack since Lucy is 6' 2" as an adult and Toon!Jack is only 5 feet. It basically works due to toon strength, wings, and Lucy being able to levitate. (Bonus: Simon grows to 6' 4". Ericka and Drac are BREEDIN' for tall here.)

5. Some Boss Baby AU fun with toddler Jack trying to teach a pre-fangy Lucy and Simon how to scare. Somewhat inspired by the Beetlejuice musical song "Fright Night" and a joke I made on Discord with @lovelylivelyv .

6. Wanted to draw some fluff between Lucy and Jack with Lucy using her claws to help preen Jack's wings. I like drawing these two together, they're very similar in personality with Jack kinda being something of an inspiration for my Lucy. They're a couple of brave rebellious fun-loving chaos balls and I love them.

The heart and soul of the show. Requires strong acting, strong vocals, and a stunning sense of humor. Honestly maybe this is just me being a simp but like I fully think he would have a gotdamn blast dressed up in Scrooge makeup for the 1800s scene and no one can convince me otherwise.

Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) - Jeremy Jordan

This is it, the entire reason I made this fan cast. Just. Imagine Jeremy Jordan singing Bringin' Back Christmas. The same energy as Ready As I'll Ever Be, and also as The World Will Know from Newsies??? Like, that's barely anything, and he's perfect.

Kimberly (Octavia Spencer) - Khaila Anyé Wilcoxon

Yeah okay I did sadly feel like I needed to slightly de-age Kimberly to match the younger form of Present; my original casting was NaTasha Yvette Williams and she would still slay this so hard, but like. Consistency, ya know? And besides, Khaila is STUNNING, fr; her performance as Catherine of Aragon is a testament to her skills alone, but if you want proof of her ability to sing gently as well as to Belt Like All Hell as she does in Six, then I will just direct you kindly to her role as one of the Fates in Hadestown; girl SLAYS! (Alternate pick: Renée Elise Goldsberry, because I can just HEAR her sing these songs.)

Jacob Marley (Patrick Page) - Patrick Page

I mean. Come on. Even if he hadn't played this role already, he originated Hades in Hadestown. No one can top this guy.

Past (Sunita Mani) - Solea Pfeiffer

Hadestown haunts the cast again, but like, come on. She's so good, no one can tell me no.

Yet-to-Come (Tracy Morgan) - Michael James Scott

IDK something about his energy as Genie just translates really well to this role to me. (Alternatively, the Beetlejuice energy of Alex Brightman would give a REALLY fun twist to it, especially if the director decided to lean into YTC as a comic relief character, but the energy is just off enough I wanna stick to the source material for now.)

Wren (Marlow Barkley) - Isabella Esler

Okay to be completely honest am I pretty much just pulling a random Lydia Deets out of a hat since they're like the only consistent kid actresses I can find? Maybe, lmao. That said, having heard her sing, she's GOOD fam! I think she could pull Wren really well!

Owen (Joe Tippett) - Justin Collette

Okay, so once again, he happens to be a Beetlejuice star, but the vibe check here really comes from his role in School of Rock! It's the same sort of offbeat-person-with-a-heart-of-gold vibe as Owen has in the movie, and like with him also playing the Beetlejuice to Isabella's Lydia, I think they'd do great as dad and daughter on stage. Alternatively, Will Burton (who played Adam in the same cast) would also be a great pick, but gives off some more panicky vibes that I don't feel are as great of a match to Owen.

Carrie (Andrea Anders) - Michaela Diamond

If you've seen her video on her favorite song from NYT, you Know the vibes.

Wow I am so offended

Like, I am one of the most understanding, chill person you'd ever meet. If you cancel on me I'm usually relieved because it's a spoon for me too, y'know? If we only message eachother once in a blue moon I don't worry about it, I just also assume it's a spoon.

So this one friend, I only see her like twice a year at Christmas to exchange presents or go to a party at a restaurant. We keep talking about visiting each other but we hardly ever do..

So they like beetlejuice, they almost themed their wedding on it. Went as BJ and Lydia for Halloween. And her husband does an amazing keatlejuice impression and sent me a birthday message in character! And they know I love the musical and all so....

I told them how I won't go to our theater because I have beef with them. But the theater out of town has the special comfy recliners and asked if they'd like to see the new movie with me at it.

They said they'd love to. But don't know when because of husband's schedule. And she just went through cancer not too long ago and has a lot of pain issues, so of course I know how that all is.

I just said oh yeah just let me know becasei don't have a schedule. It was up to them.

....a week or two later she messaged me basically saying "hey i hope you got to see the movie! I've just been in so much pain I can't even bring myself to sit in a theatre"

First of all. No. You knew I was waiting for you. But i understand not being up to doing a movie.

So here's the fucked up part

The fam went to see beetlejuice tonight while I did laundry. Mom and I were gonna see it sometime later at the nice theater anyway.

This friend messaged me saying she saw the fam as they were leaving the theater. As in this friend just saw a movie. Then told me how much the seats hurt.

Well. I tried to take you to a comfy recliner. What happened to not being up to watching a movie?

Everyone is butthurty about this friend because she's kind of always like this and at this point I feel like I'm making excuses for her too...

But yeah I'm feeling a bit butthurt.

currently watching: One Piece! Myself, my partner and my partner's partner got into it all together! We're on the Whole Cake arc rn, which, not my fav arc to be honest, but Luffy is still great and things are starting to get interesting. Also, Welcome to Night Vale! (a podcast, not a tv show, but my friend was interested, so now we're listening to it together while playing minecraft on the weekends!)

relationship status: In a polyamorous relationship! This configuration specifically. I'm the red/blue one!

current obsession: Nicktoons Unite and Tigerghost! One Piece is in the wings rn and Gravity Falls is starting to wake up as a fixation with the fandom being more active now

last thing i googled: how to play lorecana. My partner was interested in playing so we picked up a couple pre-mades to see how it is! I got the Encanto deck and he got the Moana one! It's pretty fun, but I have yet to really get into a game the same way i have other card games
