- She was your go to person to talk to when it came to the kids (and Stella)

- Then puberty hit, and Claire was terrified of you two being like her and Phil, but she forgot you have a head on your shoulders

- It didn’t hit that you two were a lot smarter than Phil and her until she saw how thoughtful he was with you

- Luke never rushed you over anything

- Even if he wanted to try and explore (in more ways than one) he was always respectful of you and your choices

- You didn’t even know he liked you until he invited you over to one of the family parties

- The new guy at school (who became friends with Luke and Manny) lied about wanting to go out so he could date your (female) best friend

- You were bummed out and wanted to put on a brave face

- One pretty much everyone but Jay picked up one

- You hid in the backyard, knowing no one would disturb you out here until someone did

He knocked your knee with his. “Why are you so upset over what this one guy did?”

You shrug.

“Come on, you can tell me, you know.”

You sigh, rubbing your face, “I- he- he was- I thought- you know,” you push yourself upright. “I don’t even know why I’m so upset. It’s not like I think he’s the only guy who’s ever going to like me or anything.”

You push yourself off the pool chair and head for the back gate. “I’m gonna go wait out front for my mom.”

He grabs your arm, “don’t go.”

You pout, “I’m not very much fun to be around, Luke. I don’t want to be the reason everyone’s sad.”

“You won’t.”

“Luke, just-”

He stands in front of you, straightening his posture to be at his full height. “You’re not leaving when you’re sad.”

You furrow your brows, “when’d you get so tall?”

“That’s all you have to say?”

“I- your-” you lightly shove him away and make your way around the chairs. “Your boy pheromones are messing with my head.”

“Boy pheromones?”

You scoff, “yeah, now I’m leaving annoyed.” You grab your phone. “Move.”

He shakes his head. “Nope.” He stops in front of you, cupping your cheeks. “I’m not letting you leave without this.”

“What?” Your eyes widen at the sensation of his lips on yours.

- Claire smacks Phil’s arm, who whines at the stinging with a smile on his face

- Gloria and Cam lets quiet, “aws” at the sight

- Mitch, Hayley, and Alex smile at the sight

- Jay stands there, shaking his head, remembering when he was young and pulls Gloria closer

- Joe and Manny criticize what they would have done differently

- You two pull apart, both red in the cheeks

You giggle, resting your head on his shoulder “Why are you laughing?”

“Your family just watched our first kiss.”

“Technically our second.”

You poke his stomach, earning a flinch reaction from him. “Shut up.”

Everyone talks about Alex being gay in Modern Family (which, don’t get me wrong, I totally agree with), but no one talks about Haley and Luke being CANONICALLY bi…

There’s an entire episode where the family is boating, and Luke and Haley see a hot person, but can’t immediately clock their gender… and both of them were essentially like “Actually, I don’t care, I call dibs.” And spent the WHOLE EPISODE trying to find this person to shoot their shot.

Another hc for Spring Court / Tamlin's family is that his dad was a dick. And because Tam himself says that he was as bad as Beron, I headcanon that himself and Beron would have been close - not really, but rather close in the sense that if they had High Lord meetings, then Spring would ally would Autumn, and Autumn with Spring.

I suppose the only good thing about Tamlim's dad is that maybe (MAYBE) he was good to his Mate. I don't want to call him a grey character or have anything good about him besides this fact - that he treated his wife and lady and mate well. (I mean he gifted her a garden as a mating present - and I THINK Tamlin spoke fondly of the garden to Feyre, or maybe I'm just making things up in my head idk it's been some years since I read the books.)

But anyways, I headcanon that because Tamlin's dad was kinda like Beron, he actually pushed for Tamlin to befriend Rhysand. And Tamlin was glad to be of actual use to his father - its the second son trope but make it third son who yearns for acceptance and purpose and will do anything to be liked by their superiors.

Now anyways, Tamlin was like k I'll be his friend (??I mean, weird, why would my dad want me to be the heir to the Night Court's friend?? Like he'd understand befriending a son of Beron, but the Night Court???)

Anyways Tamlin is dumb as fuck, and his older brothers aren't of much help, only telling him not to question the reasoning behind their father's orders (which Tamlin doesn't, he's just like k idek why dad wants this but imma do it anyways), and Tamlin's mum is like maybe he just wants you to make friends with other courts ? But Tamlin's dad would never in hell have a son of HIS be an emissary or MESSENGER to/of other High Lords. (I mean, that just spells embarrassment for him and his son.)

Anyways so I first was like nah Tamlin's dad would have been threatening to Tamlin and force him to befriend Rhys and essentially spy on him... but now that I think more on Tamlin, damn, this guy is dumb and his will is easily swayed. (See: Ianthe.)

So I just think Tamlin, being young and happy and excited to have successfuly made friends with a boy his father wanted him to be friends with, just went to his dad and mum and told them EVERYTHING Rhysand told him, if only because omg the night court is so different from us they have these winged beasts but I can't call them beasts because rhys's mum is one of them but they have WINGS! Rhysand doesn't tho but anyways Rhys has a little sister and SHE has wings and anyways Rhys goes to the beasts who aren't beasts they're called Illyrians and they love to fight with each other and generally their home gives war camp vibes because the men train their all the time (all Tamlin's dad hears "the High Lord of the Night Court has an army in wait and in constant training")

And yeah shame Tamlin is just dumb - he actually gives Modern Family Luke Dunphy vibes

Okay so I LOVE modern family right? As much as- fuck that - MORE than the next person, literally rewatching it to the point of memorisation.

So yeah, I love that show but a few details didn’t really sit well with me as the seasons progressed. None of this is said with hate, so please don’t come for me.

LUKE.

He was an adorable inquisitive child always searching for out of the box ways of exploration. Sure he was kinda shown as dumb as a child but that could be attributed to his childish innocence or just asking “why not?” . But as he grew into an adult, I really wish we got to see his character progress. I want to see Luke who sure likes girls but isn’t OBSESSED with him. Let him grow out of his teenage phase. I want him being as dorky as Phil with weird extravagant but incredibly sweet ways of talking to his crushes, I want to see Luke who sure may not have done the best at school but had different strengths too and was deducted points due to his out of the box thinking and forgetting to abide by the rules. A Luke that becomes the idea guy at a good company or entrepreneur. Luke who is surprisingly very emotionally perceptive. Luke who stands up for Haley when the adults overshadow her with Alex. Luke who protects Alex from the constant stress of being lonely and feeling like no one understands her. Give me Luke and Manny shenanigans that are reminiscent of “put two brain cells in a room and suddenly they’re stupid”. Luke bonding with Lily over creative inventions, Luke sharing Phil’s interest in trampolining and dancing and does it for the girl he really really likes. Luke who isn’t dumb, just not as strict and academically inclined but does well in what he sets his mind to. Luke who has Claire’s business sense and Phil’s mind for inventions. Luke who is sharp and kind, Luke who is the glue of the family. Luke who is quick to tell when someone’s being manipulative, Luke who can easily charm a guy into giving him their own wallet, Luke who is business smart and Luke who loves corny things but will defend them with all he’s got. Luke who is the go to person everyone calls when they’re lost or scared. Luke who is actually crazy rich because he invests in stock market. Luke who donates a lot of money for noble causes such as forest fires, dog shelters etc because he has a kind generous heart. Luke who doesn’t tell anyone how rich he is and continues childish shenanigans that are hilarious.

Cuz I believe Luke’s character was never meant to be portrayed as dumb, and seeing his potential keeps me wondering what more we could’ve seen him become.

Headcanons: Being the Nonbinary (Second) Youngest Pritchett Sibling

Warnings: Descriptions of coming out and canon-typical ‘not understanding the queers’. (Let me know if I need to add any)

(A/N: I haven’t watched all of Modern Family yet, though I’ve seen up until season 8 and the occasional later episode. This is highly self-indulgent, and I’ll probably end up writing some more fics based on this premise; feel free to request them!)

Growing up, there may have been signs that you were a little ‘different’; maybe not.

If there were, Jay chose to ignore it.

Some suspicion would only arise after Mitch’s coming out(s).

Whenever you realised you were nonbinary, I imagine that the first of your family members who you would come out to would be Mitch, who would, in his own repressed way, support you in any way he could.

I don’t know if Claire would necessarily understand, but she’d still be supportive.

When you come out to your parents, they’re both confused, but Dede is immediately accepting and supportive (and Jay always insists that it was just to spite him).

On the other hand, Jay... well, he isn’t cruel or dismissive or anything. 

He just doesn’t get it.

But, you’re his kid- his baby- and he doesn’t want to lose you because he doesn’t understand.

So, he’ll go along with it and try calling you what you wanna be called.

Keep the peace, y’know?

And, he’ll screw up.

At first, part of him will feel like you, or anyone else who corrects him, are being overly pedantic, but he’ll grit his teeth and concede to avoid any conflict.

It’ll take him years and several lectures from Mitchell and Gloria for Jay to realise how important it is for him to try his best to understand you, or at the very least get it right as much as he can.

And, when he does, he’ll make sure to let you know that you have his full support, and he’s sorry that he couldn’t let you feel that sooner.

Gloria has always supported you.

Like your mother, her acceptance of you was immediate, and this time Jay couldn’t claim it was to spite him.

She wants the best for you and your relationship with your dad, so she will try her best to get him to support you rather than just tolerate you because he loves you.

Like Claire and Mitchell, she corrects him when he gets things wrong.

She’ll be happy to take you shopping for gender-affirming clothes.

And, she’ll be happy to listen if you ever need it.

Manny’s a mature and sensitive kid, so I feel like he’d mostly understand your gender when it’s first explained to him.

He’s never afraid to ask questions, though he’ll always do it out of curiosity, not judgement.

Phil, Claire and their kids all respect you.

Claire will always correct your dad when he gets things wrong.

I imagine that Phil is especially supportive and will happily refer to you as his ‘sibling-in-law’.

When Claire told him about your gender, I feel like he probably looked it up and, with a lot of research, grew to understand you as much as a cis guy ever could.

Haley and Luke probably don’t completely get it at first, but they’ll both try their best.

Alex is probably the Dunphy who understands it the most (and she probably thinks that being nonbinary is really kickass).

If anyone in her family needs any clarification on anything (it’s typically her siblings), she’ll be the first to explain things.

I feel like she’s very supportive of and knowledgeable about trans and nonbinary people and the issues they face (just between you and me, I headcanon Alex as queer, so that’s probably why).

Your chief supporters in your family are Mitch and Cam.

Whenever you need to vent about things that the rest of your family just won’t get, they’re always happy to lend a listening ear, especially Cam.

Although Mitchell cares so much about you, he struggles to be as openly loving and kind as Cam.

Cam will probably be the one who urges Mitch to speak to Jay on your behalf about how his behaviour affects you.

If you ever get any gender-affirming medical treatment, they’ll volunteer to go with you to appointments.

They’d also introduce you to their queer friends, if that’s something you want.

It may take some time, but you’ll get to feel like an accepted and supported member of your family in the end, because even if some of them don’t get it, they’ll try their best to make you feel affirmed.

Five years later.

Now be warned. These headcanons are based on what I personally think could have happened to the Pritchett’s by 2024. The pandemic and lockdown influenced this scenario. And it will have my own interpretations of the characters. So if you don’t like it. Don’t read it.

Let’s get the pandemic stuff out if the way first shall we?

During the lockdown Jay decided (read: he was forced to admit) that novelty dog beds were a nonstarter. So now he’s a freelance consultant for closest firms like his own. He has his own hours. And he can make them pay through the nose. So he’s very happy.

Because of the pandemic freezing everything. Gloria decided to volunteer enforcing the six feet apart rule at supermarkets. She proved very effective.

Manny got lucky. Very lucky. He got cold feet the day before the cruise left so he was at home when the lockdown started in earnest. Javier on the other hand got stuck on a Covid cruise and became born again. Gloria wishes that he wasn’t.

Joe loved the zoom classes. He got to show his teachers his room. And he became very popular with his new class when he showed them the pool.

With the housing market frozen during lockdown, Phil also volunteered at the supermarket as a cashier and cleaner. It lacks the major human interaction he prefers. But he was proud to contribute to society in some way during the crisis.

Claire hated the pandemic. Her new job went up in smoke two weeks in. She had to reclean everything every two hours. It got so bad that Alex had to recommend a therapist to her. Claire still isn’t 100% yet. But she’s getting there. Plus. She’s gotten closer to Dylan.

Haley’s marriage suffered during lockdown a little bit. Dylan was classed as an essential worker. So he was basically living at the hospital for months on end. And he felt like he couldn’t talk to her about it. Not even when a surge of very young patients died on his watch on the same day. The only one he felt like talking to was Claire. But now they’re in marriage counselling. Which is helping them a lot.

Alex and Arvin also got very lucky. They were in California for his birthday and staying at the Dunphy house when everything shutdown. Their jobs in Switzerland were packed in. But at least Alex had her family around her during the lockdown.

Luke had a mixed bag during the pandemic. He was just about to leave for Oregon when lockdown was announced. Which meant that he was still at home and doing zoom classes so that was good. But he also had Alex breathing over his shoulder.

The lockdown was a miserable experience for Mitchell. In a completely different state miles away from the rest of his family. He kept a 24 hour zoom call going just so he could see his father every day. Needless to say he was over the moon when Cameron suggested they move back to California when lockdown was lifted.

Cameron’s dream job turned into a nightmare once all of the schools closed. Plus his side of the family, especially Pameron, didn’t follow any of the rules properly so he kept having to throw them out of the house to keep Lily and Rex safe. Admittedly he did go a little overboard when he misinterpreted “bubble” and tied to wrap the houses exterior in plastic. But eventually he calmed down and got through it.

Lily fared a little better. She found learning in place boring. But she was happy to finally have a reason to yell “get away from me” when people broke the six feet apart rule.

Now on to the fun stuff. This will be a bit Luke heavy because he’s my favourite character.

Luke ended up majoring in child psychology at the University of Oregon. He figured that George, Poppy and Rex could do with an Uncle Frasier. That and he watched Silence of the Lambs a lot during lockdown. He wisely leaves that out of conversation.

At ten am on the Fourth of July 2022 Luke Dunphy became a father to a boy he calls Phillip Franklin Dunphy. Frankie for short. The baby was left on the doorstep nameless. But he knows who mother is though. He only slept with one redhead after all. He’s now suing for full custody with Mitchell’s help on grounds of abandonment.

Luke fell in love with his college roommate in 2024. Reeves McCoy. (For references sake think of John Boyega in the force awakens but with a prominent Missouri accent). Reeve is on the wrestling team and is majoring in family law. Luke brought Reeve home for the summer. He hadn’t told anyone so everyone was very surprised but very happy for him. None more so than Cameron and Mitchell. Then Cameron found out they Reeve is a descendant of the fabled McCoy family. And Cameron was raised believing that the Hatfield’s are in his veins. Reeve won him over by singling a ten hour Cher medley.

Haley and Dylan have another baby now. Clark Kent Marshall. Named after Claire. And the ward that he was born on. Neither of them get the reference to superman.

George’s first word was “oops”. Poppy’s first word was “no”. Rex’s first word was “Lily”. Lily lords it over Cameron and Mitchell every chance she gets. And Frankie’s first word was “dada”. Luke finally understands why Phil is the was he is.

Lily can yodel like Alameda Slim. Mitchell pays her 100 dollars a week to keep it a secret from Cameron. He categorically refuses to start a bluegrass band.

Alex and Arvin are married but don’t have children. They mutually decided not to. Instead they have a calico cat called Curie. Unfortunately for them. He has a habit of running through plate glass doors. So now Joe calls him Luke the Cat. And it stuck.

Thankfully for all concerned. Mitchell and Cameron moved back into their perfect house in 2021. It pays to be related to a realtor like Gloria.

Manny finally got fame for his movies. And he hates it. He made what he felt was a hard hitting docudrama about mother and son relationships. But it’s known as a reimagining of Psycho. He’s now joined Phil and Gloria in the real estate business.

Claire got on the Marie Kondo train. She started her own business where she helps people clean up their lives. Especially families with a lot of children.

Joe is a very smart student. Well. He would be if he didn’t channel all his intellect into a black market candy stall. Jay still doesn’t know where he got the merchandise from.

Phil and Gloria started a new business with Manny after Covid. Family Realty. They proved extremely successful with Mitchell and Cameron’s friends.

And that is what I think the Pritchett’s are doing five years after the show ended.

Dating Luke Dunphy would include...

just like Luke, your relationship would be chaotic

you didn't quite know when you started dating, it just happened

but you didn't question it because with luke it feels easy

You would spend a lot of time at his house because his parents seemed to approve of you a lot more than your parents approved of him

which means you are usually tied up in whatever Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker-Delgado nonsense is happening

outside of this though, Luke, although he has his moments, likes the calm

his favourite thing to do is to lie down and just talk about nothing and everything all at once.

he also likes to have his hair played with during this but he will deny it if asked

Movie nights are super common

You both try to find the worst movies to watch (velocopastor makes a frequent appearance)

Haley lets you borrow dresses when you go somewhere a bit nicer on dates

When Luke is working at the country club, he invites you down of an evening as he gets a discount on the food there

It’s one of the few places you are less likely to be disturbed so he favours here above most other places

He has also learnt not to leave you alone with Manny for too long

He kept going on about how “a fine temptress such as yourself shouldn’t be burdened with a creature like Luke”

Most of all though, dating Luke means that you have a second family who will always be there

Meeting Luke Dunphy Headcanon

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- You’ve known each other since you were kids

- You defended him from bully’s (by throwing mud at them)

- He shared his lunch with you after

- If someone was trying to mess with you, he’d defend “your honor” (throwing mud works many wonders and not just for the skin)

- Neither of you talked outside of school until your mom ran into Claire at the grocery store

- She invited you and your mom over for dinner after the ladies chatted

- Claire found out your mom was raising you on her own and genuinely liked her

- She could see herself being friends with your mom and wanted Luke to make more friends (slightly hoping you’d have an impact on her girls too)

- Haley and Alex are nice enough to not completely ignore you especially if you wear something cute and actually do your homework

- Phil tries way too hard but makes your mom and you feel better about coming over (you two were very hesitant)

- Claire gets more frazzled throughout the night, feeling as though everything is going wrong (which it kinda is but it’s manageable)

- Luke didn’t come home until dinner was almost done getting ready when he noticed you on the couch, playing video games almost beating his high score

- It took him a minute to recognize you

“What are you doing here?”

“Hanging out. What are you doing?”

“I’m- this is my house. I’m doing whatever I want.” He turns, “you beat my high score, that took me months to get to.”

You shrug, “it was easy.”

- A little part of his heart died and was revived that day (he didn’t find out why until he asked you out)

- Phil always wanted you two to get together after that even if it made him sad (thinking about his only boy growing up)

- Haley thought you were weird for wanting to spend time with her brother even if you did have a fashion sense

- Alex was concerned you were on the same level of intelligence as Luke but when she sat down and talked you, she realized you’re not as dumb as she thought

- Claire was worried you wouldn’t want to come around because of the chaos her entire family brings but when she saw how you were with Luke, she was less worried

Luke’s family just went along with it and it became kinda like a running joke (to them, the two of you were completely serious) like Claire would ask ”Hey Luke, what are you and Y/n doing upstairs” and he’d answer something like ”Were trying to find a good wedding band and a good song for our first dance, we were thinking maybe ”You Needed Me” by Anne Murray”.

And Claire would just nodd and go along with it as if you were really getting married (which you were but she didn’t realise).

Haley and Alex were aware tho as you and Luke had come to them for help with the planning. Haley for decoration advice and to Alex for help with a wedding budget.

As you and Luke got older the two of you started earning money by doing stuff like mowing neighbours lawns, babysitting, pet-sitting, etc.

Gloria was the only adult that realised the two of you were serious about the whole marriage thing and she wanted to be involved in helping the two of you plan which the two of you gladly accepted.

Whenever Manny wanted to take Luke so they could look at pretty girls Luke would always say no because he’s a taken man. Which Manny would respect.

Luke’s parents still didn’t even realise that the two of you were actually together while in high school even though you were really affectionate towards each other. But they wrote it off thinking ”They have always been affectionate towards each other since they were kids so it’s not different now”.

After high school the first thing Luke did was to propose to you, which his parents still thought was part of the long running joke.

They realised it wasn’t a joke when they were sitting in chairs at the wedding and you and Luke were reading your vows to each other. Phil leaned over to Claire and whispered ”They sure put a lot of effort in to this fake wedding” and that’s the moment Claire would realise and say ”Oh my god… i think this is a real wedding”.

They would then lean over to Haley who was crying seeing her baby brother and his long time best friend get married and ask if she knew it was real to which she would answer ”Are you two serious? They have literally been planning this since they were five”.

”Wait? You knew” Claire then asked shocked. ”Yeah, i’ve been helping them since they were like ten and they needed help with designing everything, Alex helped them with the budget, Gloria has helped them find a band, venue and all that stuff”..

Claire would then lean over to Jay, Mitch and Cam and ask the same thing ”Did you guys know this was a real wedding?”. They were all also suprised.

After that they just continued watching the wedding in confusion and saw the two of you say your I Do’s.

In the end they were still really happy for the two of you and knew that since you had basically been engaged for 13 years everything would turn out fine between you.

Day 9 - Haley, Alex and Luke Dunphy (Modern Family)

I headcannon all 3 Dunphy kids as bisexual (the whole Dunphy clan seems a lil fruity tbh). Haley thought Alex was a lesbian when she was younger (can’t remember what episode she said this in) and while I don’t think that is true, I definitely think Alex has some romantic interest in women. Haley has shown interest in girls throughout the series, though primarily her interest in the opposite gender, an example being S8E20 and S9E1. Sarah Hyland, the actress who plays Haley, has confirmed her character as Bi. Luke has also shown interest in the same gender such as S11E7 with the chef. I wish they would’ve explored Luke being bisexual in the later seasons instead of his character fading into more comic relief and just minor storylines involving girls. Alex definitely should’ve got a girlfriend while at college.
