Boosting Mitochondrial Health: How to Tame Chronic Inflammation with DAMPs Know-How
Exploring Mitochondrial Damage Signals and Practical Steps to Reduce Inflammation for Optimal Cellular Health I talk a lot about Mitochondria, as they matter. Every cell needs them, and their dysfunction is associated with all metabolic diseases, cancers, and neurodegenerative disorders. They are extra critical for energy organs like the brain and the heart. So, if our mitochondria malfunction,…

I am riddled with ailments, but I stay silly!
#ask#non mdzs#My health journey has been: Hernia -> acid reflux -> Vocal pain due to aforementioned reflux -> chest infection.#I'm terrified to know what's about to hit me next. Please let it be something kind. PLEASE.#The consequence of living with linguists is that you'll wake up with a wacked up voice -#suddenly you're sitting you down in front of a program called something like Praat having your shimmer and jitter levels calibrated.#They gave me a GRBAS of 33012. I have a fun thing called a pitch break where a whole octave just does not exist.#My vocal pain was bad enough I ended up seeing a speech pathologist and that whole experience was super neat!#I learnt a lot about voice - to be honest I might make a little comic on it after some more research. Fascinating stuff.#For example; your mental perception of our voice modulates the muscles of the vocal folds and larynx.#meaning that when you do have changes (inflammation = more mass = lower frequency)#your brain automatically attempts to correct it to what it 'should sound like'. Leading to a lot more vocal strain and damage!#And it gets really interesting for trans voice care as well - because the mental perception of one's voice isn't based on an existing sampl#So a good chunk of trans voice training is also done with the idea of finding one's voice and retraining the brain to accept it. Neat!#Parkinsonial Voice also has this perception to musculature link! The perception is that they are talking at a loud/normal volume#but the actual voice is quite breathy and weak. So vocal training works on practicing putting more effort into the voice#and retraining the brain to accept the 'loud' voice as 'normal'.#Isn't the human body fascinating?#Anyhow; Now I have vocal exercises and strategies to reduce strain and promote healing.#Which is a lot better than my previous strategy of yelling AAAH in my car until my 'voice smoothed out'.#You can imagine the horror on the speech path's face. I am an informed creature now.#I'm my own little lab rat now. I love learning and researching. Welcome to my tag lab. Class is dismissed.#I'll be back later with a few more answered asks </3 despite everything I'm still going to work and I need the extra sleep.#Thank you for the well wishes! And if you read all of that info dump; thank you for that as well!

i desperately need to be able to save scum real life. let me save before i nap and then reload if i have bad rng and oversleep
#sleep improves memory concentration and cognition and lowers cortisol and inflammation so if it's balanced appropriately with study time#it would give me more of a stat boost than the equivalent amount of cramming#but the threat of oversleeping is too scary. hate this.

been trying to do core workouts (cant do situps but i found some other things i can do) and im surprised to report my midsection had actually thickened out a little. its subtle, but i feel closer to how my body looked on T. a little less hourglass, a little closer to tree trunk. it makes me wonder what could happen if i continue
#been working out very minimally but doing what i can. else i feel like im wasting away#and being active is supposed to help lower inflammation. so! we're back at it

My nerves compress very easily and now my left hip/thigh is numb and I don’t know whyyyyy which is so fun isn’t it. I probably just somehow put too much pressure on my hip while I was sleeping but it’s not going away which means it’s also probably something my slippery sacroiliac joint and evil tight muscles are continuing to press on. It only starts to go away if I lay completely on my stomach. Fun
#I’m assuming it’s not my sciatic bc I can still feel the rest of my leg#maybe my lateral cutaneous or posterior cutaneous? idk#arent connective tissue disorders so fun u guys 💚#new and interesting stuff always happening in this body!! that’s for sure!!!#also I’m literally in the middle of moving so I actively do not have time to deal w this#also lowers the chances the inflammation will go down on its own#either way whenever I compress a nerve it becomes way easier for me to re-compress it again for the rest of my life#so this is a fun new lifelong thing to deal w off and on ig!!! yay!!!#hypermobility#chronic illness

Tomorrow is a new day. I took an at-home urinalysis test and I think I’m IC flaring BLAH.
Ugh. I had an amazing vacation but I’ve been so stressed by my life and all the uncertainty I’ve been facing.
Despite my pain and fatigue, I feel a lot more relaxed after some self-care though: showered, sanitized my makeup, cleaned a little, wrote up baking plans for the weekend, moisturized, told myself affirmations, ate more food, journaled, listened to music, and told myself that I am so much happier not being in a relationship where I felt my emotional needs were unfulfilled (and I truly am happier).
Tomorrow: I’ll have lunch out with one really amazing friend, then co-work with my brother the rest of the day, and really try to get my work tasks done. I know I can do this. And it’s not the end of the world if I can’t.

The intervertebral discs of your spine lack a defined blood supply. They get their nutrition through what's called Imbibition- this is the movement of nutrients and fluids into your cells and body parts in the absence of a defined blood supply.
Imbibition requires adequate movement. Disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, and nerve pain are all common symptoms of inadequate inhibition. Movement is life.

Those old negative-pressure ventilators (like the famous/infamous Iron Lung) are pretty fascinating in a number of ways.
We favor positive pressure, pumping air into the lungs, via intubation in extreme cases, but that approach has a lot of drawbacks. The emergence of covid increased demand, especially for the kind of extended use that can lead to lung damage. I wonder how fast we could have moved out new negative pressure ventilators (wikipedia page linked to one kind) if we had better public health funding (both in general and not having been fucking gutted right before we ended up needing it.)
The negative pressure machines make it harder to examine a patient, but the relative expense (including training of medical personnel), non-invasive method (and lack of associated side effects, discomfort, and distress), and general quality of life seem like they would have been good to have earlier on (hell, modern technology arguably removes some of the restriction problems that older models had; theoretically you could wire a keyboard or a video game controller in there that could be used to operate a computer, tv, e-reader, and whatnot, which would probably improve prognoses from just the psychological condition of being not in pain and not bored.)
Not a lot of old ventilators like that are still in functional condition, and people who genuinely have needed them indefinitely eventually started having trouble sourcing parts to keep the things working. They do restrict movement but as an alternative to intubation in cases extreme enough to need it, they still seem by far the more comfortable option. Since positive pressure ventilators are so resource-intensive and invasive, I wonder if keeping both kinds around and transferring people to a newer model of negative pressure chamber if extended use is needed would be the ideal protocol. Covid is still a problem even though we're largely ignoring it, we could probably still use a respectable reserve of negative pressure chambers for all their benefits.
#ignore Morg#another part of why I find them fascinating might be the asthma/general breathing problems#if I were stuck in a hospital with serious covid and had the choice between a respirator and a pressure chamber#I would emphatically choose the latter#I already have chronic inflammation pain in my respiratory system and intubation is worse than that in every way#I probably wouldn't do well on it#I mean most people don't that's why intubation is usually paired with sedatives#there's also a philosophical aspect there that hits different for someone who feels kind of alienated from their body#the way I am#for however long you need a ventilator you'll be living with it.#I already have a lot of parts that I'm living with that are outright uncomfortable#both physical and psychological. I feel like I might see ''less'' difference between that kind of machine and my own lungs#than someone who isn't restricted (through pain) to not being in certain places/conditions and not doing certain activities#It's a good question whether having the choice of which ventilator might be comparable#to restricting one's own activity to avoid pain and injury. just applied to a much more serious condition#... anyway. I should cut this off at some point#not allowing reblogs because it is 1:30AM and I am absolutely tired-philosophizing like one does. actually#maybe that's why I do more at night. lowered inhibitions turn a fairly paralyzing anxiety disorder into something closer to functional#There is so much fucking wrong with me. It's stupid.

Okay I have decided I am going to do the pre-couch to 5k workout because my knee and my ankle are both too messed up to start running again but i’ve gotta do Something
#i have achilles tendonitis in my left ankle and a ton of scar tissue and inflammation in my right knee from just.. so many dislocations#i’m talking hamstring tears and ACL sprains#and the last time i started running; i got tendonitis. so. i need to do something lower impact#i found a routine where you start off walking for 5 minutes a day and work up to 30 minutes#and i mean.. i can walk for 30 minutes Now but it’s not comfortable#my knee gets so severely messed up if i stand for too long#i can’t even explain it. it like.. locks in place but at the same time feels wobbly and unstable. and the PAIN#and i can feel the scar tissue getting inflamed 😵💫#that wasn’t the emoji i was trying to use but honestly it fits#was trying to find 🤢#anyway. i’m gonna start this routine and i also really need to draw up a list of the physio exercises i’m supposed to be doing#and just like check them off. even if i just do a couple of repetitions twice a day. it would help#personal

Aw, I’m sorry you’re not feeling well…
Hopefully you can cuddle up warm under the covers after work and get some sleep. Maybe have a little morsel to feed the cold.
Poor thing, you shouldn’t have to be out and about feeling so awful.
@oh-no-my-hand-slipped
🥺 gonna make me weep while I'm at work 😂😭 I wanna be in bed so bad but I'm still stuck here for at least another 12 hours 😭
#this is so sweet tho I'm tearing up a little lmao#not snz#i think the worst part is that it's already so hot outside and i know I'm overheating but i feel so cold#and i can't even take anything for the fever bc it'll interrupt my immune response#and my lower back is literally killing me#i assume from the immune response and inflammation and all but knowing what's causing it doesn't help#my head hurts also like it's just a bad time all around#my one consolation is that i don't think any of my coworkers have noticed#so I'm winning at hiding that shit lmao

My ankle journey
I am sharing this with all you good people on the dash because I am so fucking mad it took so long for me to learn it and if I can spare one (1) person the agony it will be worth it.
So for like...oh, 8 or 9 months, I've been struggling with pain/inflammation/tendinitis in my left Achilles tendon. I don't know what caused it. It just started up (welcome to middle age, this shit happens). It wasn't severe enough to be debilitating, but it was annoying and limiting. It was also intermittent, in that some days it would be very painful and other days hardly at all. The kind of shoe I was wearing affected it a lot.
Now, I have bone spurs on both heels (it's just a thing that happens as you get older sometimes). I'm also aware that heel pain is usually the result of tight calf muscles that pull and irritate the tendon. I tried stretching that calf muscle. You know the stretch, this bitch right here:
I did it all the time. I also iced the ankle after walking for awhile, hoping to avoid inflammation. Results were...unsatisfying.
I went to:
A chiropractor
A podiatrist
A physical therapist
A bodywork coach
They all gave me some variation on the "strengthen your calf muscle, stretch your calf muscle" advice. I continued doing this without results.
I was getting frustrated, and a little afraid that this was just my life now. Finally, I thought...maybe some targeted massage might help. I asked for rec on a local FB site and was pointed to a woman who specializes in therapeutic massage including cupping, etc.
I went to her a week ago.
She spent over half our first session working on my left lower leg. Within about 10 minutes of making my eyes water, she uttered the sentence I did not know I had been waiting to hear:
"Oh, it's your soleus."
Excuse me, what?
"It's your soleus that's the culprit. It's all tied up and stiff." She started digging into it and I felt literal sparks run up my leg as she released adhesions and got the muscle moving a little. When she finally put the leg down, it felt like it was on fire with all the blood rushing into it.
She said, "You'll need to stretch your soleus. It'll clear up, but it'll take a bit of time - tendons take ages to heal."
But I HAVE been stretching.
"No, you haven't. The usual straight-leg calf stretch only stretches the gastrocnemius, that's the big belly muscle in your calf. That's not your problem. That stretch doesn't stretch the soleus. Don't worry, I'll show you how to stretch it."
My mind is spinning.
So here are the muscles in question:
The gastroc (as the pros call it) just attaches down the back but the soleus runs underneath it from the knee around the side to the heel. The lower part above the ankle is where it typically gets tight and forms adhesions.
To stretch it, you do the same calf thing where you put your foot back and press your heel to the ground, but you have to do it with your KNEE BENT:
The bent knee keeps the gastroc from engaging. It's one of those selfish muscles (like traps) - if you give it an inch, it'll just take over and prevent other muscles from working or stretching. There are other ways to stretch the soleus but this is the easiest and you can literally do it anywhere. I've been doing it while standing and waiting for things (the elevator to come, the toast to toast). You just put the heel back and bend the knee. It's kind of like curtseying.
The minute I did this stretch, I could FEEL where it was pulling on my tendon. I knew that THIS had been the problem.
The massage therapist also told me to stop icing my heel. She said icing is for an acute injury, but a more chronic aggravation needs heat, to increase blood flow for healing. She recommended elevation with heat every day (I've been doing it in bed during "phone before bed" time).
I have been doing the soleus stretch at least half a dozen times a day for almost a week, and the ankle is at least 70% better. It is still a little tight and tender, but the improvement is significant. I think a few more weeks will have it feeling normal.
I am...blown away by this. This massage therapist was able to pinpoint an issue in only a few minutes that eluded all the other professionals I saw. I can't wait to go back to her and have her solve all my other problems, tbh.
#massage therapy#soleus muscle#achilles tendon#bodywork#i am so mad i didn't go to her last winter#why did nobody else tell me this#physical therapy
