November 1981. Embiggenable family tree for the pre-Crisis Superman, from SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTON CHRONICLES #3. Here's a breakdown:

Superman's paternal grandparents were Jor-El I and Nimda An-Dor.

Jor-El I had a sister, Kalya Var-El, who married Nim-Zee, a member of the Kandorian Science Council, and a brother, Zim-El, who married Byma Ruth-Ar.

Nim-Zee and Kalya Var-El had two sons: Gem-Zee, whose daughter Thara Gem-Zee later married Ak-Var (Jimmy Olsen's successor as Flamebird), and Van-Zee, who later married the Earthwoman Sylvia DeWitt (and for a while succeeded Superman as Nightwing, hero of Kandor). Van-Zee and Sylvia have two kids, twins Lyle-Zee and Lili Van-Zee.

Zim-El and Byma Ruth-Ar's son Kru-El (Jor-El's cousin) was sent to the Phantom Zone for creating forbidden weapons.

Jor-El I and Nimda An-Dor had three sons: Jor-El II, his twin brother Nim-El, and their younger brother Zor-El.

Nim-El married Dondra Klu-Ta; their son Don-El later became the police chief of Kandor.

Jor-El II married Lara Lor-Van; their son, Kal-El, became Superman.

Kal-El's maternal grandparents (Lara's parents) were Lor-Van and Lara Rok-Var.

Zor-El married Alura In-Ze in Argo City after the destruction of Krypton. Their daughter, Kara Zor-El, born some years later, became Supergirl.

NIGHTWING PROFILES: Van-Zee

1st Nightwing Appearance: Superman #158 (1963) Other Mantles: Superman Secret Identity: Van-Zee is a native of Kandor and a cousin of Superman, whose history he studied. He’s also a scientist.

ORIGINS Van-Zee takes up the Nightwing mantle in Superman Family #183, alongside his lab assistant Ak-Var, who becomes Flamebird.

His path to Nightwing begins when a Kandorian scientist named Van-Ol invents a method of enlarging himself and using the process to explore Earth. However, Superman doesn't trust him. He knows that Van-Ol's technology is dangerous. This causes a rift between Van-Ol and Superman.

Since Superman needs to infiltrate Van-Ol's lab, he uses Van-Zee's identity. By then, it’s known that Superman is Nightwing and Jimmy Olsen is Flamebird. However, the timing of Superman's undercover mission gets complicated when Kandor is attacked by a giant amoeba-like creature. The people of Kandor expect Nightwing and Flamebird to save them, but Superman and Jimmy aren't available to wear the Nightwing and Flamebird mantles. Knowing this, Van-Zee steps up as a Nightwing II.

Van-Zee and Ak-Var rush to Nor-Kann's house, where the necessary equipment lies in the secret Nightcave. Since Nightwing needs Flamebird, Van-Zee proposes to Ak-Var to join him as Flamebird II. Ak-Var hesitates because he thinks he isn’t the right person for the job since he has a past as a criminal. But Van-Zee believes in redemption and inspires Ak-Var to become Flamebird II.

As Nightwing, Van-Zee rescues Superman with the help of the Flamebird and the Kandorian Superman Emergency Squad.

Appears as Nightwing II in: Superman #158 (1963), Superman Family #183–194 (1977, 1978, 1979), Who's Who #17 (1986), Convergence #3 (2015).

TRIVIA

Van-Zee first appears in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #15 (1960).

Outside of the costume, Van-Zee is sometimes shown wearing a headband. It’s a symbol of Kryptonian citizenship.

Van-Zee’s relationship with Kal-El doesn't start on a good note. In fact, trouble arises when Van realises he has fallen in love with Lois Lane. Once he knows that Kal-El is in love with her too, he lets her go, keeping his feelings aside. 

Though Lois Lane rejects Van-Zee's advances, Lois suggests that she must have a duplicate somewhere in the world, which serves as motivation for Zee to find that woman. His journey leads him to meet Sylvia DeWitt.

Later Van meets Sylvia Dewitt, also known as Jane Brown, who is the spitting image of Lois Lane. The two fall in love and eventually get married. As a couple, they live on the planet Venus for a period of time. They end up moving to Kandor City. They have two children together, Lili Van-Zee and Lyle-Zee.

Since Sylvia has trouble raising super-powered children, Van-Zee finds a way to create a super-serum from the element Korium-66-Beta. That's how Sylvia becomes a “Super”. 

Superman introduces Van-Zee to Ak-Var; Ak-Var’s record isn't clean in the beginning. As a former prisoner of the Phantom Zone, for trying to steal the city's treasured Sun-Stone, his only chance comes when he meets Van-Zee. After taking Ak-Var under his wing, Van-Zee offers him a job as his assistant, and Ak-Var later becomes Flamebird II.

Thanks to the yellow Sun radiation, Van-Zee has the same abilities as Superman: Super-strength, super-speed, invulnerability, flying, super-senses, x-ray and heat vision.

Van-Zee creates his own version of the Exchange Ray (an invention that could swap just one Kandorian with someone from Earth).

In the comic Convergence #3, Van-Zee refuses to be part of Telos’ games of violence. Though Flamebird stands with him until the very end, Van-Zee gets killed by Telos. He dies as a hero of peace. 

Due to the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Van, his family, and life as Nightwing was erased from DC continuity.

Had ik al verteld dat Anneke professioneel blokfluit (= recorder op z'n Engels) speelde? Ze gaf geregeld les in Londen en af en toe een klein concert zoals te zien op de foto. Ik ging daar graag naartoe, zoals ook naar deze in Londen. Het romantische in dit geval was ook dat Anneke een zolderkamertje had om de hoek van de Duke's Hall naast de pub van Ollie&Digby...

Toen zij een keer concerteerde in Kuhmo, een plaats in Finland, stuurde ik haar een email als steuntje in de rug.

*Een week in een kuuroordhotel in Roemenië leek me wel wat voor mijn getergde rug. Ik vloog naar Boekarest en een transferbus bracht me naar het stadje Mangalia aan de Zwarte Zee. Totaal andere sfeer als in landen aan de Middellandse-Zee. Een grijzige hoteltoren met oerlelijk formica interieur en stroeve service uit een andere eeuw werd mijn onderdak. Nieuw, machtig mooi in zijn schrale uitstraling en uniek voor me.

Op de verjaardag van mijn zusje Treesje nam ik in het hotel een dubbele portie Schweine Braten mit Zwiebel: Gesundheit! Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!

Naast het hoge hotel lag het lage kuurgebouw: overal braakte het bouwsel stoomwolken uit, gasten/kuurcliënten in allemaal dezelfde witte gesteven ruwkatoenen kamerjas en veel vrouwelijk ouder personeel met een blauw kapje liepen in en uit door de hoofdingang. Ik zou mij er spoedig onder mengen. De hoofdzuster wachtte al op me.

Het NOS Journaal is soms ver beneden peil en vaak onbetrouwbaar. Nog maar weer een reeks voorbeelden

De NOS blijft stug doorgaan met het bedrijven van manipulatieve journalistiek. En als je gefundeerde kritiek op de publieke omroep levert, ben je in de ogen van de NOS Ombudsman een complotdenker.

Journalist Arnold Karskens verzamelde voor zijn Zwartboek NOS Journaal talloze voorbeelden waaruit blijkt dat het nieuws vaak onbetrouwbaar en soms zelfs ver beneden peil is.

Hij diende een aantal klachten in over de kwaliteit van het NOS Journaal, maar die werden door de Raad voor de Journalistiek niet-ontvankelijk verklaard.

Karskens overweegt nu samen met ruim 100 medestanders aangifte te doen bij het Openbaar Ministerie tegen hoofdredacteur NOS Nieuws Marcel Gelauff wegens het verspreiden van nepnieuws, discriminatie en misbruik van gemeenschapsgeld.

Hieronder een greep uit het tiende en laatste deel van het Zwartboek:

Op 8 september begon het NOS Journaal met de Armeense kinderen Lili en Howick, die Nederland eigenlijk moesten verlaten, maar alsnog een verblijfsvergunning kregen.

Kamerleden Alexander Pechtold (D66) en Joël Voordewind (CU) reageerden opgetogen. Eerder steunden de fractievoorzitters de uitzetting nog, maar daarover werden door de NOS geen kritische vragen gesteld.

Wel verscheen er bij de NOS een week ná de berichtgeving opeens een onderzoek uit juni waaruit blijkt dat 90 procent van de Armeniërs onder een valse naam asielaanvraag doet. Ook verzinnen ze ziektes en dreigen ze met zelfmoord.

Blijvend laag

In het item over de benoeming van de Republikein Brett Kavanaugh als opperrechter in het Amerikaanse Hooggerechtshof op 27 september komt Kavanaugh zelf niet aan het woord in het Journaal.

Christine Ford, die Kavanaugh beschuldigt van seksueel wangedrag, krijgt wel alle ruimte.

Het NOS Journaal van 19 september ging onder meer over het topoverleg in Oostenrijk over de migratieproblematiek.

Correspondent Sander van Hoorn is ter plaatse en beweert: “Gevoel van urgentie proef je hier eigenlijk nauwelijks meer en dat komt voor een deel omdat die aantallen migranten die de Middellandse Zee oversteken blijvend laag zijn.”

In de weken voor het topoverleg meldden zich in Italië, Griekenland, Bulgarije en Spanje 66 procent méér migranten.

VRT Nieuws laat aan de hand van een kaartje zien dat het aantal migranten in Spanje, Italië en Griekenland ten opzichte van 2017 is gestegen met respectievelijk 100, 80 en 60 procent.

Blijvend laag dus…

Suggestieve opmerking

Op 28 augustus was er in het Journaal aandacht voor de massale demonstraties in de Duitse stad Chemnitz naar aanleiding van de dood van een 35-jarige Duitser.

Geen woord over de steekpartij of het motief van de twee verdachten, een Syriër en een Irakees. Het ging vooral over de ‘hardnekkigheid van extreemrechts geweld’.

In de uitzending van 1 september ging het onder meer over de 19-jarige Afghaan die om zich heen stak op Amsterdam CS.

NOS-correspondente Kysia Hekster maakte de volgende suggestieve opmerking: “Je kunt je voorstellen, heb ik ook aan de politie voorgelegd, dat het iets te maken heeft met de cartoonwedstrijd van Geert Wilders.”

Een dag later lezen we op NOS Teletekst dat de 19-jarige verdachte het niet heeft gehad over het inmiddels ingetrokken plan voor een cartoonwedstrijd.

Bullshit

Op 13 augustus berichtte de NOS over een koopkrachtstijging van 1,5 procent onder kabinet-Rutte voor komend jaar.

Arum-Lily: What’s the farthest you’d go for a stranger? 

Okay so my brain can't comprehend if this question meant how far i'd go for a stranger err sexually or in terms of lending a helping hand (pun not intended haha). But yeah I'll just answer both 😂

Sexually - well, I've never made out or had a one night stand with someone I've only met, so not really far.

In terms of lending a helping hand (lol) I've never been in a situation where I had to really put myself out there to help someone but I'm kind of a gullible person so whenever someone approaches me asking for money for whatever reason I usually give whatever I can spare. I also buy meals for homeless people. I know it's just a band aid solution and that it doesn't really help solve the bigger, underlying problem, but I just do what I can do at the moment. Okay, so back to me being gullible, when I was still a freshman in college I think I almost got kidnapped by these two guys who approached me asking for help because they're lost. They were trying to find this place and asked me to help them find it and stupid me actually went with them. Then I saw we were heading towards this parked white van (true story!) and alarm bells went off in my head, so I ran as fast as I can away from them.

Bergenia: Are you a morning or night person? 

Hmmm I think it depends on what consumes me at the moment. When I was younger I used to stay up all night reading. Definitely a night person back then. Now that I'm older I'm leaning more into sports so I'm more of a morning person now (though my work schedule forces me to stay up late).

Bloodroots: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? 

I wanted to be an astronaut because riding a spaceship to the moon seemed super cool to me haha!

Camelia: If you could visit anywhere, where would you want to go? 

There are a lot of places I wish to visit but right now I would really want to see the aurora borealis in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Daisy: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment? I don't know, I feel like I haven't really achieved anything so far in terms of my education and career. But I'd like to think that growing as a person, finding my true value, and not letting my relationship status define me is my greatest personal achievement so far. I used to feel incomplete whenever I didn't have anyone in my life, but it's been almost 2 years now since my last relationship and I can say these were the most productive 2 years of my life (though I must I admit miss the feeling of being in love lol!)

thinking about how the superman family (like the ones related to him) dynamics would be if I put them all together. hmmm a few of these are slightly changed to either make more conflict or to make a character have more character (looking at you Dik-Zee) also splitting kon into kon & conner simply because I can

Gregor would be a dust phantom in these which informs how he interacts with some characters. He and Chris are the only ones who can directly converse with Mon whenever. Gregor would still have an edge to him and have the whole complex he had in the original story - amplified by the fact that he is currently in some half-dead half alive state due to his powers

Johny would be jealous of other people still having their powers. Johny and Gregor would argue the most out of all his siblings but he's closest to Gregor

Cir would mostly be how she acted in the original run. No Mia though since they were somehow able to split apart so Cir tries out different secret identities but she's not very good at it despite everyone's help. She's probably the most positive one here

Jon Lane. he's mostly the same, still has some edge after development, Cir and Jon Lane found themselves in the same plane of non-existence and were somehow brought back idk. Anyways he mostly keeps to himself since he feels guilty about his past

Tommy; he visits occasionally. he's just kinda there

Jimmy Olsen: he's Jimmy Olsen. In this the whole sun/son thing happens right before all the Hal Rand thinking he's Mark Olsen stuff. but he's basically same jimmy as always. Family friend status. also mark and hal are married in this continuity. knows a lot about Cadmus stuff

Secundus: give him all of Kon & Jonathan's insecurities multiplied by 10. Since he's kind of a combination of both AND there's plenty of other people who'd accept being Superman

Chris Kent: he still has abandonment issues. Due to Nightwing powers he can directly talk to phantom zoners without the phantom zone viewer.

Jonathan Samuel Kent: feels a bit awkward about all this. The Ultraman thing happened so he has trauma from that. the others don't understand why he went with Jor in the first place. Jealous of the twins the most

Otho & Osul: still have Warworld trauma. still a bit worried about the old god thing. they tend to get along with everyone well, but all their siblings have hangups with how Clark handled being a parent or how Clark wasn't able to be a parent to them, which leaves them a bit confused on how to feel about their siblings

Conner Kent: an adaptation of YJTV conner, so he's a bit quicker to anger

Clark's kryptonian relatives (cousins & their kids)

Van-Zee; looks up to Clark, has a close bond to Ak-Var

Sylvia DeWitt, trained a bit in Klurkor; has powers under a yellow sun due to Van-Zee's serum. She's more reserved than Lois

Lyle-Zee and Lili Van-Zee: absolute menaces, drive their parents a bit mad.

Dik-Zee: generally a chill dude but a bit of a slacker, but it doesn't really affect his job much due to the thought type writers. he's a bit of a romantic as well. Generally wears a superman suit whenever though because of Van's twins

Ak-Var, married into the family. Happy that most of them accept him since the red K incident.

Thara Gem-Zee; likes learning about Kryptonian history, which is why she likes talking to Ak-Var who lived on Krypton before it blew up

Don-El; he's more serious and tries always being professional. Unfortunately he's also the first to suspect Ak if there's any a slightest chance of Ak-Var becoming a criminal again, which is unfortunate for Ak-Var

Rad-Zee; generally keeps to himself in a lab. doesn't like Van's twins because of their shenanigans

Kara Zor-El: more brash than Clark. Due to having both sets of parents alive and being in a different city, she doesn't visit often. More likely to be seen in Kandorian or Kryptonian celebrations than Earth ones though sometimes her whole family visits Clark's on Earth holidays

Judy/Equila gained her powers back and her grandparents started living on Earth as well. They take care of Judy while Kara is busy since Judy likes being with Kara

Clark's siblings (& their kids):

Cory Renwald; since he's a government agent, he's usually busy. Doesn't know Clark is Superman, but knows they have a connection. Trusts Clark's judgement on things, but feels Clark's too much of a goody two shoes. Doesn't really visit due to being busy but he'll try if he has time

Kral of Titan: succeeded in his revolution on Titan, which feels awkward for him since he feels guilty about thinking of betraying superboy (clark). Since everyone's a telepath on titan, everyone there knows this, but they built a statues to honor him anyways. Also learned that the temperature control gene is recessive (this is to connect it better to losh). Tries visiting often to escape the awkward situation he put himself in, but has to deal with making sure things don't go back to how it was during Clark's Smallville days

Kathy Warren; busy with Cadmus work usually. Doesn't feel like she has to hide her super intelligence anymore and feels like Cadmus has people she can relate to that don't alienate her

Kon-El; tries to be his own man, still has some of the complexes he's had before but he's getting better at handling them. Specifically remembers the Kents being alive so it's weird that he finds that in this continuity they're dead

Martha: time travel brings a future version of the baby that Kon was co-parenting on gemworld. She feels like Kon abandoned her. Kon can't really argue against that

Mighto/Tim Tate: Blames Clark/Kal for the death of his parents. Generally unpleasant to be around. More reserved on the Kents' death day (most of Clark's siblings meet up at their graves), Mighto does not attack on that day, despite all his flaws, Tim loved the Kents

Varl Quoz: Sometimes either he or the Kents/Els travel to Xenon though they make sure they always have enough fuel and spare parts to travel to and from it. The former weakling world is also used for people to live on. Varl and Kal get along well but due to Clark's privacy, the rest of the family is unsure of the whole situation (Varl explains later during their second or third vacation there)

Mon: he's still stuck in the phantom zone. Sometimes he makes asides, or attempts to help the family. Gregor and Chris are closest to him due to actually being able to talk whenever with him. Mon is grateful for this since this means he has more to do than absolutely nothing

Halk Kar: a bit insecure due to having lesser powers than Superman and thinking he was stronger when he thought he was Superman's brother. Is usually space traveling so he only visits on rare occasions

Mae: generally the same, except she lives with Linda. also in this continuity she's made by this universe's Lex (he was using an alternate identity) & Kathy while they were both working at Cadmus

Linda: generally the same except she keeps the Earth Angel powersTwilight: lives with Linda and Mae. uses her darkness powers similarly to how the Earth Angels use their powers (wings and blasts)

Blithe & Comet: live with Linda & Mae

Ariella: raised mainly by Linda and Mae. she's worse than Van's twins in how much chaos she can cause, which is, at least one of, the reasons why the others live with Linda and Mae

H'El: hates clones. has super op powers. Respects Jor so he doesn't attack on days that Jor-El discovered something which luckily is a lot of days. nobody likes him which makes him even mopier. Sometimes he crashes on someone else's couch just to angst about it and complain about everything. everyone else here finds him annoying

Rogol Zaar: everyone else here hates him - including Mighto and H'El. it's because he's the only one that doesn't care for Jor or the Kents (Mighto thinks you should respect your parents; despite H'El's breakdown he still is kryptonian and respects Jor). He is never invited

Lucy: somehow a combination of post-IC, Pre-crisis & Post-crisis Lucy. I'll figure it out. Anyways she has supernaturally white hair due to some jimmy olsen stuff that happened. In the end she married Ron and has a son with him

The Chronological Superman 1961:

It’s a big year for imaginary super-offspring, and -- I believe, anyway, I’d need to research this before I declare myself 100% confident in this next sentiment -- it’s the first time imaginary super-offspring have gotten names!

The plot device of Superman and Lois (or any other pairing) having super-children is a relatively recent invention anyway*, but even the super-twins who debuted last year in the “Mr. and Mrs.Clark (Superman) Kent” imaginary story serial didn’t have names at first.

So, Mrs. and Mrs Clark (Superman) Kent are proud to announce the birth of their twins Larry and Carole**, as per Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane vol.1 No.23, and their super-daughter Lola in a different imaginary story from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen vol.1 No.56.

(Larry and Carole are the third pair of super-twins in these stories, but are not to be confused with the unnamed twins from an earlier Imaginary Story, or the twin children of lookalikes Van-Zee and Sylvia DeWitt, who are Lili and Lyle. Twins run in the family, it appears) 

*(In 1949 (Superman vol.1 No.57), Superman met Lois 4XR, Lois Lane’s identical lookalike great-great-etc-granddaughter, who may have been his offspring as well -- hard to say since everybody in this future world (the 30th Century, of course) boasted super-powers regardless of their heritage. **”Larry” and “Carole” seem like such arbitrary names for the super-twins, particularly since we reside in a world of Jonathan, Christopher and Joseph Kents, and their predecessors Jor-El Kent and Kal Jr, etc, all of whom make particular sense either in-continuity or out. It only eventually dawned on me that it’s “L(arry)” for “Lois” and “C(arole)” for “Clark.” Nicely played, old Superman comics, nicely played ...

Flood & Ark / Stephen Baxter

Ik bespreek deze twee boeken tegelijk, dat lukt niet zonder SPOILERS!!!

Het verhaal -- gepubliceerd in 2008 -- begint in 2016, als er op Aarde steeds meer overstromingen plaatsvinden. Het water blijft maar stijgen. In eerste instantie houden klimaatwetenschapper vol dat dit het gevolg is van het smelten van de poolkappen en dat het water dus maximaal 70-80 meter zal stijgen. Dat is al erg genoeg, maar wetenschapper Thandie Jones is ervan overtuigd dat het water uit reservoirs diep onder de aardkorst komt en dat het zou kunnen stijgen tot wel vijf keer het huidige oceanvolume, waarmee er op de aardbol geen droog land meer zou overblijven. Als het water inderdaad maar doorstijgt, zetten een aantal hele rijke mensen plannen in actie om -- in elk geval iets van -- de mensheid te laten voortbestaan. Ark Drie, om op de zee te wonen, Ark Twee onderwater, en Ark Een zal op zoek gaan naar een nieuwe Aarde.

De gebeurtenissen omspannen een periode van 2016-2052 (Flood) en 2025-2081 (Ark). Door slim gebruik te maken van een aantal personages, houdt de schrijver er de menselijke maat in, waardoor het interessant blijft om mee te leven met de gebeurtenissen. Zo hier en daar gebeuren wel dingen die niet helemaal logisch zijn maar vooral kunstgrepen ten behoeve van het verhaal. Ik vond het ook jammer dat er geen goede verklaring wordt gegeven voor het opeens loskomen van al dat water. Wat wel weer boeiend is, is de vraag wat er nu eigenlijk met alle inspanningen wordt bereikt -- de generaties die opgroeien op zee of in een ruimteschip raken zover verwijderd van het leven en de cultuur op Aarde voor de vloed, dat zelfs als ze er in slagen voort te bestaan, dat niet per se kan worden gezien als het voortzetten van de mensheid zoals degenen die de plannen maakten voor ogen hadden...

Tijd om de kleine Lili Europa te laten zien. We konden in de zomervakantie in een kunstenaarsboerderij van Italiaanse vrienden van Jaantje net buiten Ravenna in het gehucht San Pietro in Vincoli logeren, midden tussen de perzikboomgaarden en niet ver van de Adriatische Zee, de zee tussen Italië en Joegoslavië, het land dat zich net aan het opdelen was in nieuwe staatjes (Kroatië, Servië, Bosnië etc.).

Ik vroeg Mick met zijn twaalf jaar of hij het leuk zou vinden ingewijd te worden in de geheimen van het liften; ik was van plan om eens poolshoogte te nemen in het oude Joegoslavië. Van Italiaanse kennissen van kennissen kregen we de eerste wel heel speciale lift naar de overkant van de zee, per zeilschip!, naar Rovinj in Kroatië waar het zeilechtpaar ons een spectaculaire camping met allerlei attracties in het vooruitzicht stelde.

's Nachts om 12 uur zeilden we met een gunstige zuidwestenwind uit Ravenna weg en om half acht 's ochtends, na een zinderende zonsopgang zoals dat op vakantie hoort, in de jachthaven van Rovinj binnen te lopen. Maar zagen Mick en ik het nou echt goed? Op de kade vol VALALTA-vlaggen, die bij die grote camping hoorden, stonden mensen al naar ons te zwaaien. In hun blootje! En tot onze verbijstering kleedde ons zeilechtpaar, al aardig op leeftijd, zich ook spontaan uit in de kajuit en begonnen aan dek dolenthousiast op z'n Italiaans terug te zwaaien en te roepen. Ook in hun blootje dus; het was al lekker warm zo vroeg, daar lag het niet aan..., maar Mick en ik keken elkaar eens aan.

De tekst hierboven in deze Valalta-folder vermeldt: voor FKK-liefhebbers. Even opgezocht: FKK is de bond voor naturistencampings. Aha.

Eenmaal op de luxueuze camping, (want dat was het, veel oudere rijke Rolex en Gucci-echtparen) hadden Mick en ik na 20 minuten door dat je hier compleet voor lul liep met je zwembroek aan. Dus die van ons gingen ook uit en we stapten met rechte rug een nieuwe scène van onze kleurrijke levensrevue binnen.

We sliepen op de zeilboot en hadden twee dagen lol op de camping en in de zwembaden, toen ik Mick vroeg of hij ook het liftersbloed voelde borrelen. Ik wilde naar het noorden door Kroatië en Slovenië de hoek om weer naar Italië in de richting van Trieste, Venetië en tenslotte Ravenna.

Zo gezegd zo gedaan. Mick en ik kregen heel makkelijk steeds een lift. Men was benieuwd naar die blonde Europeaan met dat bruine jochie van 12 jaar. Op de grens van Kroatië en Slovenië aangekomen sloeg een douaneherdershond zo fel aan toen Mickey uit een auto stapte, dat we ons echt rot schrokken. "Dat doet ie nou altijd bij donkere mensen", was het povere commentaar.

Voor Mick was de lol er een beetje af en hij werd ook nog autoziek, de stakker. Da's niet handig als je lift. Dus namen we de trein in Trieste naar Ravenna en een paar uurtjes later zaten Mick en ik op te scheppen over alles wat we hadden meegemaakt onder het genot van een dozijn zelfgeplukte supersappige perziken.

Mick deed wel even voor hoe wij gesjeesd hadden door de Sloveense bergpartijen.

Vakantietijd 1992 voorbij. Trouwe Opeltje Kadett bracht ons veilig thuis en Lili kon ook voor het eerst constateren dat die mooie Wester gelukkig nog steeds kaarsrecht overeind stond.

Dit is een rauw boek. Verre van fraai taalgebruik. Veel opsommingen van gebeurtenissen die elkaar snel opvolgen. Dat geeft het boek vaart, maar je gaat ook over dingen heen lezen.

Het eerste, langste deel is veruit het boeiendst. Over Lili, een fragiele Française, die aanmonstert op een boot om voor de kust van Alaska te gaan vissen. Ze is vreselijk fanatiek om niet onder te doen voor de ruwe kerels op de boot. Lili vindt het geweldig, dat vissen op de woeste zee. Het kan haar niet woest genoeg zijn. Ze is doodongelukkig als er een eind komt aan de reis.

Het eerste deel van het boek sleurt de lezer mee. Het tweede, laatste deel is een stuk minder. Dat is erg klef vanwege een relatie tussen Lili en een visser. Verder is er een hoop ronddolen van Lili door de straten en langs de schepen, als ze op zoek is naar een nieuwe plek op een vissersboot.

Lili is bezeten om de elementen zo extreem mogelijk te beleven. Ze beult zichzelf af. Waarom ze dit doet wordt niet duidelijk. Er is de suggestie van iets onoorbaars in haar thuisland. Lili wil absoluut niet terug. Ze wil zich niet binden. Ze wil zwerven, naar de uiteindes van de wereld, liever slapend in het wrak van een auto dan in een bed tussen vier muren.
