Between that and his family who insists on butting in, he's got his work cut out for him. But, as they say, nothing is as it seems.

Wings over Gotham by icarus_chained Batman, DC (gen), 190k, No Man’s Land, Independent Gotham An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.

A Meditation on Railroading by eggmacguffin Batman (gen), 24k, Hurt/Comfort When he ends up ditched in Atlanta after a fight with his dad, Tim decides to do the only sensible thing: Tell no one and make the 800 mile journey back to Gotham on his own. Because the "call Batman when you're in trouble" rule only applies when he's Robin, right?

In This or Any Other Universe by wildsofmarch The Batman (2022) (gen), 33k, Dimension Travel There was a new vigilante in his city: a man who smiled too much and talked too loud and knew his way around a fight a little too well. Bruce wasn't bothered by his antics. Except the man also seemed to know a little too much about him. Who was this Nightwing, anyway? OR: Dick Grayson (DCU) accidentally lands himself in Battinson’s Gotham.

DC LEGENDS OF TOMORRW

Countless Roads by nirejseki Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 231k, Medium Leonard Snart, AU-Ghosts Due to a family curse (which some call a gift), Leonard Snart has more life than he knows what to do with – and that gives him the ability to see, speak to, and even share with the various ghosts that are always surrounding him. Sure, said curse also means he’s going to die sooner rather than later, just like his mother, but in the meantime Len has no intention of letting superheroes, time travelers, a surprisingly charming pyromaniac, and a lot of ghosts get in the way of him having a nice, successful career as a professional thief.

Straight On Till Morning by nirejeski Arrowverse, DC Legends of Tomorrow (Sara Lance/Mick Rory/Leonard Snart), 17k, Time Pirates Left alone in the Refuge, Mick and Sara decide they're going to be proactive about their fate. They end up becoming time pirates. Because of course they do.

THE WITCHER

A Beginners Guide to Exploiting the Kaedweni Tax Code For Fun and Profit by Heronfem The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 190k, WIP, AU-Modern Setting, AU-College/University Aiden Kett and Lambert Wilkson accidentally get married, and this is honestly probably the least of their problems.

By the Broken Lock That Freed Me by inexplicifics The Witcher, (muti), 46k, AU-Daemons, Accidental Warlord Series Aiden takes a contract on the Duke of Velen. He's not expecting the most interesting part of the whole affair to be meeting the duke's betrothed. His daemon thinks they should keep her. Aiden's not sure how that will work, given that he's already got a Wolf and doesn't know how Lambert and his daemon might feel about adding someone else to their little pack, but it's awfully tempting. And Cats aren't very good at resisting temptation.

Intent by tnico The Witcher (Aiden/Lambert), 18k, Non-Traditional A/B/O, 5+1 "You think I don't know what you're after?" Lambert accuses. "Well, I'd certainly hope you do, by this point in the evening," Aiden (so he says) agrees in a convincingly genial tone. It'd probably be enough to fool someone else on the matter of genuine interest.

The Hero's Journey; or: What Jasper Sitwell Did Last Summer by pagination MCU, Welcome to Night Vale (multi), 23k, Crossover The thing is, when an agent reaches clearance level five, it’s because they’re valuable, capable of something an exponentially diminishing few can offer in the ranks of SHIELD. Clint Barton, his personal issues notwithstanding, is unstoppable behind a scope. Jim Woo is an analyst and extractor par excellence. Melinda May has infiltrated half the presidential offices of Asia, and Phil Coulson has an instinct for the unusual that could be the basis of an entire TV show. Jasper’s less certain what he brings to the party.

If I Knew You Were Coming I'd've Baked a Cake by OddityBoddity MCU, Hawkeye (gen), 27k, Baking They’re the broken ones. That’s what Clint figures the rest think about him and Barnes. Clint with his eardrums trashed, Barnes with a regiment’s worth of trauma and a psychotic cybernetic arm, put in the same room and told to make nice while the others get to go on missions and do important things and save the world. Well they're not broken. So of course they got bored and tired of being sidelined and decided to entertain themselves. And of course they ended up wanted, running through the streets of Paris with bananas down their pants and gendarmes in pursuit. Of course they did.

Madonna - Like a Prayer 1989

"Like a Prayer" is a song by American singer Madonna and was released as the lead single from her 1989 fourth studio album of the same name. Written and produced by both Madonna and Patrick Leonard, the song heralded an artistic and personal approach to songwriting for Madonna, who believed that she needed to cater more to her adult audience. Along with the parent album, "Like a Prayer" was a turning point in Madonna's career, with critics starting to acknowledge her as an artist rather than a mere pop star.

"Like a Prayer" is a pop rock and gospel song that also incorporates elements of funk. The lyrics contain liturgical words, but they have been interpreted by some people to have dual meanings of sexual innuendo and religion. The accompanying music video for "Like a Prayer", directed by Mary Lambert, shows a white woman being sexually assaulted and subsequently killed by a group of white men, but a black man is arrested for the crime. The video depicts a church and Catholic symbols such as stigmata. It also features the Ku Klux Klan's burning crosses and a dream sequence about kissing a black saint. Leon Robinson was hired to play the role of a saint; the part was inspired by Martin de Porres, the patron saint of mixed-race people and all those seeking interracial harmony. The Vatican condemned the video, while family and religious groups protested against its broadcast. They boycotted products by soft drink manufacturer Pepsi, who had used the song in their commercial. Pepsi canceled their sponsorship contract with Madonna, but allowed her to retain the $5 million fee.

While most TV stations banned the music video, MTV notably continued to air the video on heavy rotation. The controversies leading to her "Like a Prayer" video introduced the concept of free publicity and became a turning point where Madonna was viewed as a shrewd businesswoman who knows how to sell a concept. At the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, the video for "Like a Prayer" was nominated in the Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year categories, winning the former. It was number one on MTV's countdown of "100 Videos That Broke the Rules" in 2005, and for the channel's 25th anniversary, viewers voted it as the "Most Groundbreaking Music Video of All Time". In addition, the video was ranked at number 20 on Rolling Stone's "The 100 Top Music Videos", and at number two on VH1's 100 Greatest Videos. Happy Birthday Christina 'Licorice' McKechnie, born on October 2nd 1945 in Edinburgh.

This is always a difficult post for, I say Happy Birthday to Licorice, but in my heart I think she is dead, she was last heard from in 1990, and the last sighting of, "Likkie’’ as she became known, was hitchhiking across the Arizona desert.

Christina ‘Licorice’ McKechnie was born in Edinburgh in 1945, there is nothing about her early life online that I can find, her story starts when she was known around the folk clubs of Auld Reekie, reciting poetry, it was around this time she left home-and was set to marry, the late great Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch. The banns had been called, (Banns were a legal requirement and were an intention of marriage, posted for people to see in their parish,) the wedding never took place, Jansch left Scotland for Morocco.

Likkie began a relationship with Robin Williamson who along Robin,Clive Palmer and Mike Heron had form The Incredible String Band, the group split for a time when Williamson and Likkie went travelling but reformed on their return as a duo with Heron. They later played on the same bill as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, Likkie joined then as vocalist and they recorded the album, The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion.

The band went on to have success touring but had limited commercial success. They got involved with Scientology in the 60’s and it is said to have contributed to a decline in their music quality, they did however play Woodstock in 69, they were scheduled to play the first day and a fee of $4500 had been agreed, this would have been a huge sum for them back in the 60’s and you would have thought bigger things beckoned. The band didn’t appear on the film of the festival as they refused to play in the rain, their slot was taken by the fabulous Melanie (Safka) who later wrote “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” about her day. “String Band” played the next day on a mainly rock day, the world missed out and so did they.

By late 1969, they had established a communal base at Glen Row near Innerleithen, Likkie and Robin split around this time although she remained in the group till 1972. After a failed marriage to musician Brian Lambert she featured on an album with Williamson and his Merry men and an album with Woody Woodmansey’s band U-Boat. Beyond this, it's believed that she may have bounced around, living perhaps in Los Angeles, Arizona, and Sacramento.

The Diversity of Classic Rock website reports that McKechnie's sister last heard from her in 1990, when McKechnie had been recovering from surgery in Sacramento. The site is also one of many that claims McKechnie disappeared in the Arizona desert, but this has never been conclusively proved.

Time to hit the kitchen to grab a few grains of salt because Reddit has also weighed in on her disappearance, with unproven theories ranging from a Scientology connection to parsing the words of former bandmates who wish (emphasis on the present tense) her well.

Redditors also claim that McKechnie's family hired private investigators to find her, though they were unsuccessful. Others counter that she's been traced via a basic internet search to a small city in the States. The confusion is enough to make any casual sleuth hope that McKechnie just grew tired of the spotlight and is now happy in her anonymity.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether Likkie is dead, or if she is living way off grid somewhere on the other side of the Atlantic celebrating her 78th birthday.

Anyone Else Love Mission Impossible?

And I'm not talking Tom Cruise here, I'm talking the original series 1966 - 1973. This is my go-to, feel good re-watch show.

I've had the DVDs for years, but I bought myself the blu-ray set with birthday money and so, of course I am watching them all again.

If you watch enough episodes you begin to believe that five people with a plan can save the world. Really kind of a good feeling in the current day and age.

For those unfamiliar, Mission Impossible is an action series where the Impossible Mission team, led by Dan Briggs (Steven Hill) in season 1 and Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) for the other 6 seasons (and the 2 seasons of the 80s sequel), prevent foreign government or the mafia or hitmen or anyone bad, from getting their own way.

Each episode is a stand alone adventure (with maybe 1 double ep per season), so its easy to dip in and out without fear of having missed a vital plot point. Oh weekly episode shows how I miss thee.

If you or any of you IM force are caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape will self destruct in five seconds.

The first 5 seasons are the best IMHO, with clever plots. Season 6 & 7 are still fun, but they don't have the same intricacies as the previous ones and are very much US based, where as the other season pretend to be all over the world.

When I used to watch it in re-runs as a kid, I really thought Jim picked a different team for each mission, but in my defence I did only ever get to see an episode every now and then.🤣 And I had totally forgotten there was a different leader for the team in season 1.

DVDvision - La Collection Épisode 6

L'histoire de DVDvision vol.1 continue ! Et voici l'épisode 6 de la série, quand un journaliste a chuté à travers une lucarne, et le magazine a failli complètement s'arrêter !

Notes : Droit dans le mur ! Ce numéro a bien failli être le dernier. Pendant sa conception nous perdons le maquettiste Philippe Lambert, qui craque et décide de partir faire de la presse ailleurs, mais au dernier moment, quand il n'est quasiment plus possible de le remplacer ! Alors que reprend le cercle infernal des candidats à la direction artistique, le temps passe, et passe, et passe encore... jusqu'à ce qu'il ne reste plus que 4 jours avant de rendre le produit fini, sous peine de rater la date de parution. Ce qui n'est pas envisageable, puisque le DVD, qui est un spécial Clint Eastwood, et qui comprend un court-métrage en 5.1, Daena, est déjà pressé !

En l'absence de tout candidat sérieux à la maquette, nous décidons donc de nous adresser à une agence intérimaire, qui relève le défi de réaliser l'intégralité de la maquette en 3 jours, secrétariat de rédaction compris. Je vous laisse imaginer l'enfer et la pression...

Tout ça en est trop pour le pauvre Leonard Haddad, qui au cours d'une pause-cigarette, tombe par inadvertance à travers une lucarne en verre, et va s'écraser trois mètres plus bas, détruisant une partie du matériel informatique et mobilier de la société qui a accepté de nous aider !  Un accident qui déclenche la fureur du dirigeant, qui entretenait un espoir de travailler régulièrement sur le magazine, espoir qu'il voit réduit en autant de miettes que les débris de la vitre à travers Leonard est passé. Heureusement, l'aventureux et indestructible journaliste n'en tirera que quelques contusions et égratignures...

Cette série d'événements, et le stress qu'ils entrainent, (même si en y repensant des années après, c'est très drôle !), m'emmènent au bord du découragement. Il faut dire que l'année a été (trop) riche en rebondissements côté coulisses. L'éditorial parait arrogant, mais ce n'est que du flan. En dehors des ventes, plutôt bonnes, le manque de structure du magazine en fait une revue en perpétuel sursis, surtout sans personne de stable à la maquette, et ceci au bout d'un an d'existence ! 

Pourtant, à y regarder de près, le numéro n'a pas a rougir des précédents, bien au contraire : il marque le premier gros papier de Benjamin Rozovas qui, même s'il collaborait au magazine depuis le début, n'avait pas eu l'occasion de se faire la plume sur un dossier aussi intéressant que celui qu'il livre sur la version initiale du 13e Guerrier de John Mc Tiernan. Un dossier qui remportera l'adhésion des lecteurs, et justifiera son embauche à temps plein dans le journal plus tard. Rafik Djoumi s'éclate dans un dossier Spielberg en béton (Le Seigneur des anneaux n'était pas encore sorti). Stéphane Lacombe commence de son côté à vraiment poser les bases de la rubrique Zone Interdite, qui deviendra rapidement l'une des meilleures du magazine, avec un parti pris des cinématographies bis et cultes poussé à l'extrême. 

News du site DVDfurax sur notre stand au Mondial 2000. On peut voir sur la photo derrière le stand à gauche Catherine Lucet, la monteuse du mag, et à droite, Christelle Gibout, la responsable éditoriale du DVD.

Suite au bouclage, vu les difficultés, je songe à tout arrêter, mais plusieurs événements vont me faire changer d'avis. Tout d'abord lors de notre séjour au Salon du Son et de l'Image 2000, en septembre, notre stand est littéralement assailli par une horde de fans déchainés, qui nous arrachent des rayons tous les anciens numéros, et nous demandent de continuer sans rien changer. Ensuite, une grande partie des rédacteurs des autres journaux ayant un stand au Salon, qui passent à un moment ou à un autre, (discrètement) nous demander si on embauche ! Et puis finalement la direction de Seven Sept, qui à l'heure du bilan, me convoque. Vu tout ce qui s'est passé, je m'attend à ce qu'ils m'annoncent qu'ils arrêtent tout. Mais ils vont me dire... non pas qu'ils ont décidé d'arrêter, mais au contraire, que nous allons quitter notre couloir avec trois bureaux, déménager d'un étage, pour des locaux à nous tous seuls, et embaucher de nouveaux collaborateurs !

Et enfin je ne le sait pas encore, mais j'ai déjà rencontré LA future directrice artistique du magazine, Sandra Abreu, qui m'a été présentée par Karine Poirier. Embauchée au départ pour travailler sur l'habillage graphique et les menus du DVD, elle va très rapidement se retrouver aux commandes de la section maquette du magazine, et jusqu'au bout de l'aventure. Mais ceci est une autre histoire, celle du prochain numéro...
