#Leash Training A Puppy

Speaking of Collie Dumbs (the phenomenon where collies lose their brains when they turn into teenagers)

Russel gave us a pre-teen preview of that this morning when she took advantage of the split second no one was holding her leash (we'd been untangling her and Parker while they wrestled) and bolted.

She ran around the apartment building, down the block, across the street, and down at least half the connecting street before her brain finally came back online and she realized we weren't running with her and finally came running back to us.

Parker had also escaped when I had tried to grab her leash but he came back to me, I'm guessing, around the time she'd crossed the road.

Thankfully I live in a low traffic area.

Still reassuring her person that this was not a failure of training. No matter how well they've trained her recall this still would have happened because when they get puppy brain like this they're not capable of registering a cue until the brain cells get back from their union mandated break.

also first hike of the year where we've met strangers, and both girls did very well with their trail manners. i always ask them to sit on the side - uphill or on a rock, ideally, because it gives them a bit more mental barrier - while i stand between so people won't have to pass them directly.

sparty has always been good with this because she values food rewards over socializing with people. troj is different and while she won't approach people unless spoken to, if people look at her and talk at the same time, she sees it as an invitation. i haven't been hard on it because she's very calm and the people we've met have seen it as a friendly gesture (which it is) but its happened a few times now and its definitely one of those Things That Make Sense To Troj.

anyway an old man with trekking poles commented on our "good cooperation" which was nice

I added two new tricks to his roster!! now he knows how to jump on command, and he can do that figure-8 weave thing around my legs. sometimes I forget he's just a year and change old bc he's just such a Young Man now and he can make himself look so, so.... old... look at how ugly he looks in this pic 🧡

i forgot for so long that sometimes you just have to trust your dog. i was so worried for so long about having Turtle off leash, but i took that leap of faith and he does just fine. he sticks close by and checks in often, recalls when called. i was so stressed for nothing lol

personally I don't have a strong opinion on ecollar use but @ my rich client it's fucking insane to talk about introducing an ecollar to ur 4 month old parvo survivor doodle when she's just doing extremely normal puppy behaviors. what the fuck.

okay apparently im not done ranting about quarantine puppies. for the love of god to NOT get a puppy if you won't bother with training and proper socialization. i don't care if you say it'll help your mental health, i don't care if you just reeeaaaally want one, i don't care if you're only gonna get a teeny tiny toy breed, do not get a damn puppy if you won't put in the necessary work for the sake of their own and other's safety

Day 127. We're practicing heeling and stays in traffic situations, today! There's an insanely busy road behind her, but she's gotten great at being calm and focused while the trucks are zipping by.

I wish there was more encouragement and knowledge when it comes to leash training + basic training when adopting a dog because so many times do I have to try to avoid walking down the same road as someone who are walking their dogs without leashes on

like… I don’t care how friendly they are, they need leashes and it’s not only for my safety but for their safety too.

I haven’t properly leash trained lily quite yet besides getting her gassed up to put her harness on to go walkies, she still pulls now and then and she will whine when we pass other dogs + try to force me to stop so she can stare at them

but like, it’s better than no leash at all and she’s only a 1 year old (turning 2 in July)

When I have to pass someone across the street with their dogs not in a leash and they have to constantly try to recall their dog from chasing us I think that’s a sign that you really should put them on a leash

Is It OK to Have My Dog Off-Leash?

We have all seen it.  We are in public and see people with their dogs without a leash.  The owner is walking down the sidewalk, and their dog is right next to them.  Cars pass by and squirrels play in the tree branches overhead.  During all of this, the dog seems oblivious to everything and remains at their owner’s side.

We pull up to the grocery store and there is a dog quietly sitting near the front entrance.  We go in and he remains in place.  We get our groceries, walk out, and the dog is still there.  As we reach our car, we look back and see that the dog’s owner has emerged from the grocery store.  The dog then walks to his side and stays with him as he rolls his grocery cart to the car.

We look at these situations where owners allow their dogs to be off-leash in public and think how wonderful it must be for the owner and dog to roam freely together while they are out and about.  We then think about allowing our dog off-leash while we are in the front yard, at the park, or on a walk. 

Before we do this, we “practice for a while” in the front yard. We have our dog out with us for a week or so in the front yard and he always stays with us. Eureka! He must be ready to go!  We then think that it is fine to have our dog off-leash whenever we are out and about. Is this a good decision?
