I always wonder what ethnic group the Dornish are meant to be. The Spanish? Does GRRM think the Spanish are just sucking and fucking with everyone all of the time? I feel like he's too racist to make a North African society sexually liberated, which would be my only other guess.

He keeps saying Moorish Spain is the main influence but it’s clearly like actually works of fiction about the Muslim world and Latin America that were more influential than the actual historical analogue. There exists an older form of orientalism that was more prevalent pre-9/11 (really pre-repression of women being used to justify a lot of American intervention in the Middle East) that framed hyper-repressed Victorian sexual mores against like white male fantasies about the Ottoman harem to assert that the Muslim world was actually more sexually liberated than “the west.” That was present in a lot of the works of fiction GRRM was drawing on to write Dorne. It’s also a lot of stereotypes about Latino people being like fiery tempestuous lovers or whatever that have worked their way in there.

I helped make something really cool happen with a really wonderful group of former farmworkers. About a month ago I was contacted by a group of former farmworkers from Latin America. In 2023, they were part of a group of 130 workers recruited from Chile by a farm owned by Haygrove, a multinational berry producer, via their affiliate there. They were offered loans for flights to come work in the UK on the Seasonal Worker Scheme, and promised decent hours and life changing wages.

When they arrived in the UK, they were held on a campsite for 12 days without any income, and only signed their contract when the fruit was ready so Haygrove didn't have to pay them; the hours were extremely variable, and their earnings way less than they were promised; they were only paid for the time they were picking, and had to meet very high targets of 18kg of cherries an hour to avoid punishment; the supervisors discriminated against them, giving them the worst fields and giving the best ones to workers of the same race as them, and making them do unpaid work that others didn't have to do; and then to add insult to injury they were asked to pay back their loans, which cost way more than what they were told in Chile. 88 of the workers went on strike against this.

The farm then said they would pay for flights home for those who were having a bad time, as a way of getting the ringleaders out of the country. 30 of them signed up for this. 6 of them got their flights paid for; the others then suddenly found themselves dismissed, or being denied all work altogether. They (it is unclear whether this was their own decision or at the farm's encouragement - I've heard both) went to London to wait for their flights, and then recevied a message saying that they had absconded and that they were no longer the farm's responsibility.

They were left penniless and homeless for a signficant period of time, and now living in Salvation Army accomodation, who are contracted by the UK government run safehouses for people who are potential victims of trafficking. They have been treated abysmally in them. The Salvation Army was set up in the 19th century to provide a militarised, disciplinarian approach to poverty and they maintain that attitude in their treatment of the workers. They are now awaiting the outcome of employment tribunals, supported by the UVW union and court decisions over whether they are victims of trafficking and exploitation.

One of the worst things about this situation is that I know of many workers in the same situation, workers who were dismissed, overcharged to come to the UK and couldn't earn enough to pay their debts, intimidated by debt collectors in their home countries, living in the same sort of limbo trapped in the UK. The Seasonal Worker Visa scheme these workers were recruited on, which governs the arrival of 43,000 farmworkers, ties workers to a recruitment agency which places workers on farms they have contracts with. They are not allowed to change employer without their permission. They are only allowed to stay in the country for 6 months (any longer would count towards net immigration figures), while only now 2 years later are they having initial hearings around their employment tribunal. Other workers have waited longer for their case to be heard, and others were failed completely by the tribunal process.

The workers have been left no choice but to demonstrate, demanding justice in their case, improved conditions for farmworkers, and the right of residency in order to pursue their case and as compensation for their treatment. The demo was covered in several news stories and you can find some good photos here. We had prepared a dossier of evidence of trafficking, mistreatment and exploitation to present to the Home Office but they refused to take it.

Of course, if Haygrove want to threaten me with libel law, all of this is "allegedly" and to be decided in a court stacked against these workers in the coming year. I think their boss Angus Davison should take some cash out of his £181,000 a year salary, or maybe some from their 3 executives average salary of £120,000 salary each (director renumeration on page 20) to sort out the situation, but that's just my personal opinion.

Book Review: The Witch's Art of Incantation, 2nd ed. by Roger J. Horne

10/10, I'd buy again for what it is: but you should know what it is before you buy it

This is a review of the second edition, which is about 100 pages longer than the original and contains 55 additional incantations.

What's it about?

This is a book of translated and edited historical and folk incantations to be used in syncretic folk witchcraft or any form of witchcraft. These incantations are grouped into 9 categories:

Seeking the Old Ones

Calling to the Green World

Love and Spurned Love

Coinage and Prosperity

Curses and Maledictions

Spirit Flight and Second Sight

Blessings and Benedictions

Heretical Psalmistry

Miscellaneous latinate charms

Besides a brief introduction, the book is just incantations.

It's not a spellbook. It doesn't tell you to collect candles or herbs, or what day of the week to work them on, or the moon phase, or whatever. Just as it says on the tin, it's a book of incantations.

However, Horne does have a very handy section at the beginning called Approaches to the Art of Incantation.

Here he describes methods and techniques to help empower incantations (I recommend not skipping it), a framework for understanding the power of words, and folk magic actions that may be combined with incantations, such as the burning of candles with pins stuck in, or speaking over poppets.

If you've skipped Folk Witchcraft, definitely check out this section.

(As Horne explains in the introduction, the first ed. of this book was a companion book to his other text, Folk Witchcraft. Apparently, Folk Witchcraft provided a great deal of context and lore surrounding the use of the incantations themselves.

The second ed. has been developed into a standalone text, but Horne still recommends looking to Folk Witchcraft if you want more context.)

Where do these incantations come from?

Horne makes it clear that he primarily sourced incantations from Europe and America (primarily Appalachia) not because they're particularly better in any way, but because these are the areas his ancestors and practice stem from. He makes an outspoken statement against any perceived Eurocentric authority, and warns people to not take his area of focus to mean there is more power within those cultures than within others.

That being given, these incantations are sourced historically from at least the first century onward, from a wide variety of sources, including Greco-Roman, Irish, Scottish, Cornish, Welsh, French, German, Appalachian, Icelandic, and more.

When possible, Horne notes where the incantation originated from, and in what manner he edited it.

All of these incantations have been edited for use by the modern reader; they are Horne's original adaptations. This is not a historical reference.

An example?

To give you an idea of the contents, this is one of the shorter incantations in the book, "A Call to Fire."

A Call to Fire Fire untamed, lustrous, and bright, power behind the sun, moon and every star. Aetherial fire, source of life, most splendid flower, heat-bringer, light-bringer, hear me, radiant fire. [Origin: 3 BC - 1 AD. Greco-Roman. Adapted and rearranged with poetic license after The Hymns of Orpheus. pg. 100.]

This incantation may be used to charm offering candles, to consecrate sacred fires, to call forth salamanders or fire elementals, to honor a god or spirit of fire, and so forth - the application is up to you.

Is the variety solid? Are they versatile enough for use even if you don't consider yourself to be a folk witch?

A big reason I recommend this book so highly isn't just because it's handy for me, but because I think it is very versatile.

The variety of what's presented is exceptional; there are charms to hail the seasons and the moons, the Old Ones and plant allies, to cure grief and wrath, to call a lover, to steal wealth, to conjure all varieties of helpful spirits, to reveal a thief, to hag-ride, to skin-change, to induce second-sight, to charm your cards for better readings, and I could go on and on.

In addition, because Horne sources everything where he can, it's a wealth to look not only at his adaptations but compare the charms to the historical originals, and thereby gain inspiration for developing your own incantations.

The best part for me is that they're all usable. It's not a spellbook where you can't get some ingredients so you can't use some spells. They're incantations that you pair with whatever spell elements you want to include, including just using them on their own.

But are they sexy? Will I feel like I'm living deliciously?

Yes. You will feel like you are living deliciously. You will feel like ye olde wytche who feeds blood and honey to their familiar, and steals the potency of men at night as you roam in your second skin; you will believe you may only be harmed with a silver bullet when you take the form of a hare to rob milk from cows.

Real quick, what's up with those 'heretical psalms' and latinate charms?

The last (and smallest) portion of the book more heavily leans into syncreticism. Horne's attitude in the book is that folk witchcraft is by practicality and oftentimes necessity a syncretic one, and that witches use what's on hand in order to get the job done. He references the importance of the influence of the Church on modern cunning traditions, including both the adoption of psalms and also of latinate language.

Twenty-three psalms are printed in the book along with recommended magical uses, along with a list of the magical uses of psalms (which you'd have to look up yourself).

Finally, Horne has a fifteen incantations in Latin. Or, latinate, as he keeps clarifying. He hasn't taken charms and translated them into Latin, rather he's edited historical folk charms that were recited in liturgical Latin by the people who used them - again emphasizing syncreticism in folk magic.

If you're not into Christian syncreticism, I doubt this section would be of use to you. This section constitutes 80 total pages out of 319, or about a quarter of the book. Personally I'd still get it for the more pagan incantations even if I didn't want the more syncretic ones, but it's certainly not to everyone's tastes.

(Be advised that there is a lot of Scottish folk magic in this book, plenty of which calls on Mary as divine authority. Obviously you can change the incantations as you please, but if you're allergic to these things, be aware they are peppered throughout the text.)

Chicken, who would you personally recommend this book to?

I would recommend this book to a practitioner who is:

Ready to start seriously investing in their personal repertoire of spells

Confident enough to experiment with spellcrafting

Sick and tired of spellbooks that recommend inaccessible ingredients, and just want building blocks to make their own full-format spells

Wanting a resource that helps with getting practical magic done within their current paradigm, without having to adopt a lot of new ritual aspects or theories

Looking for inspiration to expand their current practice without having to restart their practice

Looking for resources on Christian or heretical witchcraft

Anyone seeking resources on the power of words in practical sorcery

I'm a pagan, not a witch, and I love hymns and incantations. Would I like it?

To be honest, I doubt it.

Yes, the book starts with incantations to the Old Ones, who are ostensibly gods; but anyone with an eye to see can tell that the incantations all either relate to the Devil or the Queen of Witches. Also, one for Fenris ("darkling wolf") and one for the Sun.

Like 5 of the incantations may clearly be associated with Greek gods, but those gods are not named and the association appears to be selected based on their relevance to witchcraft.

A vast majority of all incantations in the book are related to spellwork and conjuring nature spirits. These incantations were designed for use in magic, which includes calling spirits and compelling action; not so much veneration or worship.

Readability and Accessibility

The physical quality of the book is disappointing. And that's not the author's fault and has no bearing on the actual contents, but right out of the box I was afraid the poor thing was going to fall apart. However it was cheap as hell so I have nothing to complain about, this thing was like $15 for a paperback. It has the quality you would expect from such a cheap purchase.

The text is sort of an artsy one? It's a serif font that's not too out there, but it's smaller than I was expecting, and my eyes don't love it. You will have to find your reading glasses for this one. All his books I bought are published in this typeface so I assume it's a choice.

Horne loves big paragraphs and long sentences. I find his writing style to be clear and easy to follow, but it's not a lower grade reading level. You may expect a maximum of two paragraphs per page in the prose portions.

The incantations themselves are broken up into much more manageable parts, always containing no more than 2 lines per paragraph break.

I believe Horne did this on purpose to compel the reader to find their own cadence in the incantations. But, it has the added effect of contributing to readability. The way each incantation is split up makes it very easy to follow and not lose your place.

So is Worm good from what you have read

"Yes" doesn't begin to cover it but yes. Worm is a brain-rewiring mobius strip disguised as a bible disguised as a superhero web serial that either cured your cancer or shot your dog or both depending on who you ask, and it has many extremely dedicated, brilliant scholar priest surgeons publicly dissecting it on this platform on the regular to the point I don't think I have much to add to the conversations surrounding it, even if I do have some The Thoughts about it. I had never even really seriously thought about superhero prose before and Worm isn't a thing I go back and reread frequently but it did a complete and total 180 on the way I think about superheroes and even fiction, and I've never stopped thinking about it since I've read it.

It is a monumentally impressive story with completely absolutely incredible characters that I cannot stop thinking about. No matter where it was going, even past stretches that were less interesting or more of a slog to read or worse, I could not put the story of Taylor Hebert down for one minute. Tattletale fascinated me every step of the way, I had to keep up with her. Rachel Lindt was a character I feel like I'd been waiting my whole life for. What was I gonna do, not see them through? I feel like Worm easily loses you if you don't particularly connect with the characters enough to justify to yourself the amount of time you'll spend with them, but man, I could not unglue my eyeballs from these people enough (I love all the core Undersiders, to be clear, I'd say it's Rachel > Taylor > Tattletale > Aisha and Alec and Brian, there are very small gaps between these, I just don't go berserk for the last three like I do for the first three, I'm taking Bitch and Skitter to the grave I'm dead serious)

Everybody who read it has one or several gripes with it with some major dealbreakers in the mix. Tumblr's kinda the only place online where you can really talk about them at length without the spectre of John Wildbow hanging over the discussion, which enables discussion to the point where yes, maybe it does look like to outsiders that nobody can agree on whether Worm is good or what is it even about or whether it even has worms in it (it has at least one, although it's a very big one).

And it is good, it has the Undersiders in it and the Undersiders are one of the greatest groups of characters ever put together, but everyone has at least one major point of contention with Worm whether it's the timeskip or the length or the racism or the gross fatphobia or aspects surrounding the Dallon-Pelham Torment Nexus and etc. I'd say it has maybe the most racist vision of Latin America I've ever seen in a superhero text a hair short of pro-colonial tracts in Golden Age comics and that is a tall fucking order by any metric. It is Complicated, and that winds up making it so fascinating to talk about.

Worm has self-sustaining ecological systems of posts up here, far away from the Spacebattles and Reddit battlegrounds where it has different ones and that's not getting into Weaverdice or the sequel or Wildbow's larger body of work, which I haven't gotten to and probably will not any time soon because Worm was enough of a commitment as is. Do I recommend Worm to everyone? It is certainly not to everyone's tastes and I personally find it difficult to describe it simply enough to make it sound appealing or not like a pyramid scheme. But yes I do think it's good, in fact great, in fact, amazing, except when it isn't, and except it Plainly Sucks, but then something like Taylor vs Mannequin or Kevin Norton's interlude or "You needed worthy opponents" happens and it fucks harder than anything has ever fucked before and you don't walk away from it the same, so yes I guess "good" will have to do now.

It's certainly a lot but I definitely found it worth my time to read and then read the texts written about it here. You'll have to take my endorsement of Worm as proof of it's quality and proof of how deranged it makes it's readerbase, they're not mutually exclusive. If you can make it, Worm and the wormosphere has layers and layers to wade through and talk about and enjoy, despite how we're all so very small in the end *gunshot*.

What makes a practice a closed practice? I have seen people say “this is a closed practice” or “doing this is a closed practice” but I never understood it once, what does a practice being closed mean and how does a practice become closed?

a closed practice refers to a spiritual or cultural tradition restricted to a specific group of people, often tied to ancestry, heritage, or initiation. These practices are protected to preserve their sacredness and cultural identity, and participation is typically limited to those within the originating group or who have received formal permission or training.

What makes a practice labeled as a closed practice?

1) Cultural and Historical Significance: The practice is integral to the identity of a specific cultural group, often stemming from a history of colonization or marginalization.

2) Sacred Knowledge: These practices include teachings, rituals, or symbols considered sacred and guarded against misuse or misrepresentation.

3) Initiation or Ancestral Connection: Some practices require a direct cultural connection, ancestral ties, or formal initiation from someone within the tradition. (This can be founded in a lot of African diaspora religions and African traditional religions, as well with many rites of Hinduism & Buddhism)

4) Protection from Cultural Appropriation: Many closed practices have been historically exploited or commodified by outsiders, leading to their communities enforcing strict boundaries.

Examples of Closed Practices:

1) Santería (Regla de Ocha): A syncretic Afro-Caribbean religion originating in Cuba. Participation requires formal initiation, and the practice is deeply tied to the descendants of enslaved Africans and their connection to the Orishas, many people are also born into this practice and taught within it, so it’s basically initiation

2) Palo Monte (Palo Mayombe): An Afro-Cuban spiritual tradition with Bantu roots. It involves working with spirits(mpungus), sacred cauldrons (ngangas), and ancestral veneration(nfumbes also called nfumbis). Only those initiated into the practice can properly perform its rituals.

3) Curanderismo Rituals (Specific Forms): While some elements of Curanderismo (a Latin American healing tradition) are open, certain rituals—such as those tied to family lineages or Indigenous practices—are closed and not meant to be shared or practiced outside of the culture.

4) Mesoamerican Indigenous practices: A sacred sweat lodge ritual originating with Indigenous peoples like the Nahua and Maya. It’s intended for spiritual and physical cleansing and requires knowledge of traditional protocols.

5) Hoodoo: A syncretic African American spiritual tradition with roots in African, Indigenous, and European practices. Its rituals, especially those involving ancestral veneration and spiritual guidance, are deeply personal and should be approached with respect and understanding of their origins.

6) Brujería(no not in as the Spanish word but the folk magic of Latin America) A Latin American spiritual tradition that incorporates witchcraft, healing, and ancestral worship. Participation in Brujería often requires Latin American heritage, particularly in practices tied to familial and cultural heritage since most of it is passed down

7) Candomblé: A syncretic Afro-Brazilian religion with roots in Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu traditions. Like Santería, it requires formal initiation to participate in rituals and interact with the Orishas.

8) Amazigh Practices: Spiritual traditions of the Amazigh people in North Africa, particularly in regions of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. These practices involve sacred rituals, herbal healing, and ancestral worship, often passed down through generations and typically reserved for those with a direct cultural connection.

Why Are These Practices Closed?(not limited)

1) They serve as a means of preserving cultural identity and resilience, especially in the face of colonization and erasure.

2) Misuse or commodification by outsiders often distorts their meaning, disrespects their sacredness, and exploits the communities they come from.

Respecting closed practices involves honoring the boundaries set by the communities that hold them sacred and engaging only when invited or trained by members of the tradition.

Jane Vanini, a committed militant of the MIR (Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria), was a Brazilian revolutionary who arrived in Chile in 1971, seeking asylum from the brutal dictatorship that reigned in her homeland. Before her time in Chile, Vanini had been an active member of the Ação Libertadora Nacional (ALN), a militant group dedicated to combating Brazil's military dictatorship. Her life was marked by her unwavering dedication to the fight against oppression and her belief in a liberated, equitable society.

Upon her arrival in Chile, she quickly integrated into the MIR, where she became an integral part of its revolutionary activities. She also worked as a secretary for Revista Punto Final, a publication known for its courageous opposition to fascism and its support for leftist movements. Jane's commitment to the cause made her a key figure in the Chilean resistance during a period of immense political turbulence.

On December 6, 1974, at just 29 years of age, Jane Vanini’s journey reached its tragic end. She was cornered in her home in Población Lorenzo Arenas, in Concepción, by armed forces of the Navy, who intended to capture her. True to her revolutionary ideals, Jane refused to surrender. In a fierce act of defiance, she fought back, firing at her attackers in a desperate bid to resist. Her courage was not enough to overcome the overwhelming force of her enemies. Jane fell in combat, her resistance marking her as both a symbol of unyielding bravery and the high cost of fighting for freedom.

The aftermath of her death was shrouded in the same shadow of brutality and secrecy that characterized Pinochet's dictatorship. Jane’s body was taken away to an unknown location, leaving behind a haunting silence and unanswered questions for decades. It was not until May 2005 that her mortal remains were finally located, bringing a measure of closure to those who had sought to honor her memory and her sacrifice.

Jane Vanini remains etched in the annals of revolutionary history, a woman who lived and died for her ideals. She stood as a bulwark against the tide of fascism, her life a testament to the global fight against dictatorship and oppression. Her name continues to inspire generations of activists, her courage a reminder of the sacrifices demanded by the pursuit of justice.

The Letters of Jane Vanini During her time in exile in Chile from 1971 to 1974, Jane Vanini kept in touch with her family and friends in Brazil through writing. Over this period, she wrote 37 letters, detailing the challenges she faced living in secrecy, especially as a woman in a predominantly male environment marked by political repression. In these letters, Vanini expressed her anguish, anxiety, hopes, and longing for her homeland.

In some letters sent to her nephew, she explained her desire to change Brazil's reality and its social inequalities, justifying why she was fighting against the dictatorship. At the end of one such letter, she affirmed her lifelong commitment to justice and equal rights:

"(...) One day, they called me a communist because in the newspaper A Voz do Aluno (The Voice of the Student), I complained about the rising prices of milk and meat, which many people could not afford, despite these being basic foods for good nutrition. Later, I learned what communism was and that to reach communism, a long stage called socialism was necessary. I discovered that many countries were already socialist: the Soviet Union, China, North Vietnam, Korea, and many others. Most importantly, I learned that here in Latin America, there was a country that was an example of socialism: Cuba. Cuba, like the others, achieved socialism by fighting with weapons in hand — the entire population — against the privileged minority who had everything, and the army that defended those privileged. And so, like many other comrades, I decided to fight to establish socialism in Brazil (...)."

Exile was the only way for Jane and many other Brazilians to escape oppression, being banished from their own lives to stay alive. Forced to leave her homeland, her clandestine life abroad transformed her vision of Brazil. She expressed this in a letter to her godmother (undated):

"(...) You might wonder why I am abroad if I care so much about Brazil. I'll explain: We belong to a continent generally referred to as Latin America. This entire Latin America shares the same racial origins as us Brazilians, speaks a very similar language, and shares the same roots. We suffer from the same ailments: illiteracy, hunger, premature aging, rotten teeth, and most importantly, we have the same fundamental enemy: the Yankee. It is the North Americans who exploit all our riches: oil, copper, coffee, cattle, gold, culture, fruits — everything. And the North American does not exploit us for free. Our governments pay them to exploit our mines, our workers, our culture, to take raw materials to the U.S. at dirt-cheap prices and export them back as finished products, like soluble coffee, machinery, and so on, at exorbitant prices. Meanwhile, they keep their wealth in reserve in the U.S. When we, the underdeveloped, have nothing left to offer, they will still have their own resources. Us? What do we matter, as inferior beings, half-developed monkeys, who only mimic the customs of superior peoples? I am Latin American and love equally the mestizo, the Creole, the Indian, the Black, the Asian, and the White who make up our heritage. My siblings are all Latin Americans, and for them, I am willing to give the only thing I truly own: my life. Once a person sees what I have seen and makes the decision I have made, they own nothing but the desire to change everything, no matter the cost. As a Latin American, it is the same for me to be in Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Bolivia, or any other country because every liberated country hastens the freedom of others. Every liberated territory is a front to continue fighting (...)."

Art historian Laurent Jeanpierre (2008) noted that despite constantly moving between these two worlds, Jane Vanini could not truly cross into either. She lived in a liminal space: captivated by Chile's landscape and the dream of a socialist government but deeply connected to her Brazilian roots — its food, fruits like mangoes and cashews, as described in a letter to her godmother, signed by her alter ego Ana, dated June 12, 1973:

"[...] Don’t forget my recipes. Sometimes I want to make a cake or Brazilian food, but I don’t know any recipes. The only thing I’ve learned to make (and it’s delicious) is feijoada. But it’s missing kale and flour, which don’t exist here and are unknown. I miss mangoes, cashews, and papayas, as these fruits don’t exist here. Send me a bottle of cachaça, okay? [sic] It doesn’t exist here because sugarcane doesn’t grow. We have grape and apple chicha instead, which is delicious, but it’s not the same."

By 1973, Jane had met her second husband, journalist José Tapia Carrasco, and disclosed her new romance to her family in just two lines:

"Now I want to tell you something I’ve been ‘hiding’ for a year and a half. After I separated from Sergio, I got married again. José (Pepe) and I have been living together for a year and a half. We think alike and do the same work."

Throughout her clandestine time in Chile, Jane's family was under constant surveillance in Brazil. Her sisters were forced to testify to the Operação Bandeirante (Oban), a military intelligence center, and her apartment was raided by the government. In a letter to her nephews, she raised their awareness of the censorship and repression they lived under:

"(...) As we were winning, the ease of things made us complacent. Meanwhile, the Yankees began paying people to torture revolutionaries. Many comrades could not withstand the brutal torture and talked, leading to others falling. That’s how we got to where we are now. But history does not die. One day, the people will again understand it’s time to fight, and we will fight until we win. That’s why I am far from you now... I am sentenced to five years in prison, in addition to tortures that aren’t reported in the newspapers or in my sentencing (...)."

this can be seen by the fact that whatever group of people a particular TMA person is privileged over in some way will have TMA people within it. so a white USAmerican trans woman is oppressed for being a trans woman but receives certain privileges for being white and USAmerican, but a black trans woman from latin america for example does not have access to these privileges but on the contrary suffers from an intersection of racial, national, and gender oppression, which even black, latin american, and TMA people who are not under that specific intersection all can contribute to unless they choose to deliberately work against it

in a general sense also individuals are not even necessarily ranked in a rigid hierarchy where every single person can specifically be said to be universally always exclusively above or below another specific person. e.g. a straight woman and a gay man can both be privileged over the other in certain ways and contribute to each other's oppression. but viewed on the level of social classes and social forces, analyzing specifically transmisogyny, TMA people are oppressed by TME people, and this can and does intersect with other contradictions in society, the specifics of which require more specific analysis I'm not doing on this short post, and all of which ultimately serve the capitalist mode of production

Writing Notes: Beyond East & West Differences of Personality

The work by Markus and Kitayama (1991) has had a major effect on social, personality and developmental psychology and raised awareness for cultural considerations in psychology.

Despite the positive impact, there has been limited empirical support for independent and interdependent self-construals (Matsumoto, 1999) with some studies reporting contradictory findings.

Vignoles' & Colleagues Study

Recent research conducted by 71 researchers, across 33 countries and encompassing 55 cultural groups challenged the dichotomous view first proposed by Markus and Kitayama.

The researchers conducted a series of studies (Vignoles et al., 2016) that examined a single dimension of Independent/Interdependent, Western cultures as wholly independent, the relationship between individualist and collectivist cultures and Independent/Interdependent self-construals, as well as the role of religious heritage and socioeconomic development of cultures. 

Using data from over 7,000 adults, the authors identified:

Self-Interest

At the level of the individual, these 7 dimensions represent the different ways that we see ourselves (perception) and our relationships with other people.

The dimensions can also represent cultural norms about self that are reinforced and maintained by cultural practices and social structures.

Result & Implications

When the researchers tested the 7-dimension model, their results contradicted many long-held beliefs about independent, individualistic, interdependent and collectivist cultures.

First, Western cultures scored above average on five of the dimensions but were below average on the dimensions self-reliance and consistency.

Thus, the common view that Western cultures are wholly independent was not supported.

Latin American cultures had scores very similar to Western cultures on the difference and self-expression dimensions but scored higher on consistency and self-interest which also challenged the common view of Latin America as wholly interdependent.

The economically poorest samples in the study scored highest on self-interest and were negatively associated with individualism, whereas Western cultures scored high on commitment to others which challenges the view that rich Western cultures are selfish.

Religious heritage was also an important variable in the study. Muslim and Catholic samples had very distinct dimension profiles that showed high scores for consistency. This may be related to the tenets of both faiths that salvation is related to behaviors so behaving consistently – across different situations and settings would be important.

The results of Vignoles and colleagues demonstrated that self, whether measured at the individual level or cultural level, is NOT binary.

Note

Independence and interdependence is a complex interaction of heritage, socioeconomic development, settlement patterns, and ecological contexts.

By moving away from a dichotomous view of self, psychologists have an opportunity to expand our understanding of self and its relationship to culture.

Mexico’s Supreme Court threw out all federal criminal penalties for abortion Wednesday [September 6], ruling that national laws prohibiting the procedure are unconstitutional and violate women’s rights in a sweeping decision that extended Latin American’s trend of widening abortion access.

The high court ordered that abortion be removed from the federal penal code. The ruling will require the federal public health service and all federal health institutions to offer abortion to anyone who requests it.

“No woman or pregnant person, nor any health worker, will be able to be punished for abortion,” the Information Group for Chosen Reproduction, known by its Spanish initials GIRE, said in a statement.

Some 20 Mexican states, however, still criminalize abortion. While judges in those states will have to abide by the court’s decision, further legal work will be required to remove all penalties.

Celebration of the ruling soon spilled out onto social media.

“Today is a day of victory and justice for Mexican women!” Mexico’s National Institute for Women wrote in a message on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The government organization called the decision a “big step” toward gender equality...

The court said on X that “the legal system that criminalized abortion” in Mexican federal law was unconstitutional because it “violates the human rights of women and people with the ability to gestate.” ...

The decision came two years after the court ruled that abortion was not a crime in one northern state. That ruling set off a slow state-by-state process of decriminalizing it.

Last week, the central state of Aguascalientes became the 12th state to drop criminal penalties.

Abortion-rights activists will have to continue seeking legalization state by state, though Wednesday’s decision should make that easier. State legislatures can also act on their own to erase abortion penalties.

For now, the ruling does not mean that every Mexican women will be able to access the procedure immediately, explained Fernanda Díaz de León, sub-director and legal expert for women’s rights group IPAS.

Lifting Abortion Restrictions Across Latin America

Across Latin America, countries have made moves to lift abortion restrictions in recent years, a trend often referred to as a “green wave,” in reference to the green bandanas carried by women protesting for abortion rights in the region.

The changes in Latin America stand in sharp contrast to increasing restrictions on abortion in parts of the United States. Some American women were already seeking help from Mexican abortion rights activists to obtain pills used to end pregnancies.

Mexico City was the first Mexican jurisdiction to decriminalize abortion 15 years ago.

After decades of work by activists across the region, the trend picked up speed in Argentina, which in 2020 legalized the procedure. In 2022, Colombia, a highly conservative country, did the same.

Cuba will win in the face of the imperialist onslaught!

Statement by the Revolutionary Government

U.S. President Donald Trump has attacked Cuba from day one and without any pretext. The decision to reestablish the ironclad economic war measures against Cuba, which his predecessor eliminated only days before, is a demonstration of the aggressiveness of U.S. imperialism against the sovereignty, peace and well-being of the Cuban population.  Among them is the inclusion of our country, once again, in the arbitrary list of States that supposedly sponsor terrorism, a designation that shows an absolute disregard for the truth.

This is not surprising.  The statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 14 already warned: “The government of that country could reverse in the future the measures adopted today, as has happened on other occasions and as a sign of the lack of legitimacy, ethics, consistency and reason of its conduct against Cuba.”  He also said that “American politicians do not usually stop to find justification…”.  This is how the country is governed.

Trump has interpreted his coming to power as the coronation of an emperor. His ambition includes, just to start, the conquest of Canada, the usurpation of Greenland, the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and the deprivation of the Panamanians of their canal.  The hegemonic Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny, which were imposed by blood and fire in Latin America and the Caribbean, are the guide of the new government team.

He is associated with the groups and politicians who have made aggression against Cuba a way of life, have profited for decades from the anti-Cuban business and today share the intoxication of the new president.  They all have a high responsibility in the difficult economic situation of the country and in the increase of the migratory flow from Cuba to the United States.

This new act of aggression by the United States government against the Cuban people shows, once again, the true, cruel, merciless objective of these and so many other measures of siege and suffocation, which are applied against Cuba for the purpose of domination.  It constitutes a reaction of impotence in the face of the inability to bend our will and in the face of the respect, sympathy and support that the Revolution arouses among the peoples of the world.

The economic blockade, its reinforcement and the new aggressive measures will continue to weigh, with a very damaging effect, on our economy, the standard of living, the potential for development and the legitimate dreams of justice and well-being of the Cuban people, as has been the case in recent years.

They will not divert us from the socialist path, from the effort to recover the economy, from promoting the greatest solidarity, creativity, talent, spirit of work, and from defending as an impregnable bastion the freedom, independence, sovereignty and privilege of building a future without foreign interference.

The Cuban people are grateful for the many expressions of support and solidarity received from all over the world, from governments, Cubans living abroad, parliaments, political, religious and social organizations, and from political figures in the United States and other countries.

No one should be fooled.  The Cuban people expressed themselves with clear determination and strength in the march on December 20th.  Here the conviction prevails that CUBA WILL WIN!

In a fit of inspiration at @searivermountain 's , @idanit 's and @a-case-of-the-ace 's AU posts about Jeeves and Wooster living in their respective countries, here are my two (albeit rough and unpolished two cents) about Jeeves and Wooster if they were living in the Kindgom of Italy.

I'm rewinding the actual OG setting by a decade or so as such, we're talking of the turn of the century here, 1898-1912.

First, a few setting points:

• I imagined them living in Turin, initially this was because it tied well with other plot points (Such as chuffy owning his seaside vacation houses(?) on the coast of Liguria and still being able to put Rocky "abroad" in France). Historically you could explain it by saying his parents moved there shortly after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 because they saw it as a reason of prestige, perhaps some aunts followed suit, so on so forth.

• To elaborate on Rocky, the equivalent of them going to America in S3 of the show would be Bertie residing in Monaco and Jeeves doesn't get sent to scout New York for Rocky's aunt, but rather Montecarlo.

• To move back to Turin, while gents clubs similar to the drones did exist in Italy at the time, it would have been much likely for them to meet at a cafe since many known groups in Italy organized in such way (e.g Varied well known turn-of-century writers often ruinited at the Giubbe Rosse in Rome and the "Macchiaioli" artists often reunited at the Caffè Michelangelo in Florence)

• The Ganymede however would have operated in a way closer to that of gents club.

• Bertie, such as his standing commands, is gonna get promptly shipped to study law at the University of Turin cause I swear it's lowkey a recurrent fact with many of the wealthier authors I studied, it was "the thing" much.

Now, before I get onto miscellaneous trivia and ramblings and such, my two thoughts on their alternative names.

• The direct italianization of Reginald is Rinaldo, which I'd be keen on keeping (alternatively Raimondo has practically the same etymology and derivation), for surname, upon learning that Jeeves derives from Genevieve, which was the patron of Paris, I've decided to give him the surname Parisi, for the sake of the assonance.

• For Bertie on the other hand, the direct italianization of Betram is fucking Beltramo and I am in fact not keeping that so to remain on something similar sounding, he's Bernando now cause calling his Alberto keep the Bertie bit feels weird. As for surname, I'm similarly going of assonance, but with his original surname and as such I'm calling him Vistarini.

And now, miscellaneous trivia, lo and behold!

• Newts, or more specifically, a specie of newts known as the Italian Crested Newt, is more of a thing in central to southern Italy, so Gussy hereby has a thing for eels here in Italy, which were more common in bodies of water in the North.

• Bertie being interested in aviation!!! It was very much the next new thing so he'd often muse to Jeeves about his curiousity towards the inner workings of this jolly contraptions, tried to operate a plane once, crashes it in 50m, but if you were to ask Jeeves he'll succesfully find the right guy with the right plane to give him a ride to give Bertie aerial photos of the city he's much excited about.

• Jeeves seemingly knows every literature known to man and he's ready to counter-prove or counter-quote a statement with an appropriate literary quote. This is more instinctive musing but I feel like Bertie would often make paragons to the plays of Alfieri and Goldoni, or alternatively, Latin stuff and he'd surely have studied it majorly in uni.

• Additionally I think it would be highly funny to have Jeeves and Bertie discuss Parini, il giorno specifically.

• God blast d'Annunzio also cause Tuppy would 100% be keen on comparing is love-unfilled existence to the banes of a d'Annunzio protag, he thinks himself the next embodiment of Andrea Sperelli and Bertie is just "Heh, silly Tuppy"

• This applies generally but lots of theatre going involved, they have stayed over in Milan before to catch premieres at The Scala and one of this baboons surely said they were gonna find themselves a girl like Eleonora Duse

• The cast of the drones routinely gets dragged in honor fencing duels over this or that offence or this or that woman and Bertie is frequently dragged in under the excuse "Oh, come on, the other party has never seen me before, you can go in my stead!", he miserably fucking fails and on the other hand this is another venture in which jeeves excels
