One afternoon while Wei Ying is preparing dinner, A-Yuan looks up from his toy trucks and asks, “Baba, how comes lots of people in my class have a mom, but I don’t?”
Wei Ying’s hands falter at the chopping board. “Every family is different,” he explains carefully. “One mom, two moms, one dad, two dads. There’s loads of options.”
“But who decides?”
“What do you mean, baobei?” Wei Ying asks.
A-Yuan looks at him like he’s being silly. “Who decides who gets one baba, or two babas, or ten babas?”
Wei Ying laughs. He’s relieved A-Yuan only seems curious and isn’t upset. “Well, grown ups usually decide if they want a husband or a wife. And then they have baby radishes together.” He gives A-Yuan’s nose a gentle poke, making the boy giggle. “But some people like me decide to do it alone.” His explanation is probably not the best, but A-Yuan’s questions have admittedly taken him by surprise.
“So grown ups can have a husband or a wife…” A-Yuan holds up two sticky fingers to demonstrate. “And Baba still doesn’t have anyone?”
“I—” Wei Ying is gobsmacked. He stares at A-Yuan with his mouth agape. A-Yuan looks at him expectantly, like he’s waiting to hear an explanation as to why his Baba is incapable of finding love. Wei Ying quickly turns away and starts plating out their food. “Dinner’s ready.”
“Aunty Yanli said—”
“Eat up, baby.” Wei Ying grins wide and feeds A-Yuan a mouthful of rice, effectively shutting him up. And that’s the end of that.
Or so he thinks.
The next morning on the school playground, A-Yuan escapes from Wei Ying’s hold the second he spots Lan Jingyi, running into his friend’s arms like they’ve been separated for years. They see each other every weekday, and sometimes on the weekends too.
Wei Ying laughs and spots Jingyi’s dad looking similarly amused. The sun is out today and Lan Zhan’s pretty eyes sparkle in the sunlight. He’s utterly breathtaking. Wei Ying's heartbeat still stutters every time they see each other, and they see each other almost every day. It’s humiliating, really.
“Good morning, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan greets, voice as rich and low as ever.
“Morning, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying gives him a big, beaming grin. “How was your weekend without us?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t quite smile, but there’s laughter in his eyes. “Messy. Jingyi got into—”
“Mr Lan! Mr Lan!” A-Yuan runs back over and attaches himself to Lan Zhan’s leg like a limpet, creasing up his neatly ironed slacks.
“Yes, A-Yuan?” Lan Zhan’s hand instinctively goes to A-Yuan’s head, patting it like he does his own son’s.
“Baba needs a husband, Mr Lan,” A-Yuan says.
Wei Ying’s blood runs cold, his whole life flashing before his eyes. “A-Yuan, no—!” he splutters, trying to get the boy to stop.
But A-Yuan forges ahead without a care, voice filled with glee. “Can you marry my Baba please, Mr Lan? Then me and Jingyi can be real, actual brothers and be together forever! And then— And then we can all live happily ever after!”
“That’s enough, A-Yuan!” Wei Ying exclaims. His body feels like it’s on fire and he can hear the blood rushing in his ears. He crouches down to be at eye level with A-Yuan, despite the shakiness of his legs. “Remember what we said about thinking before we speak?”
“Ummm… that we should think before we speak?” A-Yuan blinks his innocent doe eyes up at him like he hasn’t just ruined Wei Ying’s life.
“Exactly,” Wei Ying sighs. But he doesn’t have it in him to get upset or annoyed with his son. “It’s time for you to head into class. Your teacher’s waiting for you.” He kisses A-Yuan on the forehead. “Bye bye, radish. Love you.”
“Bye bye, Baba! Love you too!” A-Yuan gives him a fat, slobbery kiss right back and then skips off to his classroom, hand in hand with Jingyi.
Wei Ying grits his teeth and slowly stands back up. Time to face the music. “I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan. I promise I didn’t put him up to it.” He doesn’t quite have the courage to meet Lan Zhan’s eyes. “He’s been asking questions about families and moms and dads and I don’t know, maybe I didn’t explain things properly. I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan.”
“No need to apologise,” Lan Zhan tells him.
“No, but there is!” Wei Ying insists. “Tell me how I can make it up to you?”
When there’s no response, Wei Ying braces himself and hesitantly looks up. Only to find that for some strange, inexplicable reason, Lan Zhan is smiling. “Let me take you out to dinner, Wei Ying.”
“What?!”
“A date,” Lan Zhan explains, like it isn’t clear enough already. “To make it up to me.”
“But Lan Zhan, I— You—” It seems that all Wei Ying is capable of today is sputtering and making a fool of himself.
Lan Zhan steps closer, still with that amused glint in his eyes, and gently brushes away a strand of hair that’s blown into Wei Ying’s face. “Don’t you want to live happily ever after, Wei Ying?” he asks.
Wei Ying feels like he’s died and gone straight to heaven.

9 "Older" Lan Zhan WangXian Fics
Another rec list created for @yiling-laozu-is-loml but everyone pls enjoy!
Note: all of these fics are tried and true; meaning I have vetted, read, and cherish all of them.
There were some specific requests for WangXian fics featuring "older" Lan Zhan (I also added a little extra allowance).
Request parameters:
Must feature WangXian ONLY
bottomXian only (If applicable)
Book canon only (if applicable)
Can include: age difference as little as a year up to lifetimes.
Can include: age difference for reals but also in spirit (ex: Accidental Sugar Daddy Lan Zhan, intentional Sugar Daddy Lan Zhan, gratuitous usage of gege, immortal Lan Zhan)
Can also include: (if there isn't much of an age difference) a power differences in which the power difference is in Lan Zhan's favour (ex: employer/employee or professor/student)
I have a little mix of all of the above in the fics below.
If you'd like a personalized rec list- feel free to DM me! I love putting these together.
1 We Were Never Strangers (36728 words) by NeverEnoughWangxian
Chapters: 3/3 Rating: Mature Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Reincarnation, Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Modern Cultivators, POV Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, (mostly), College Student Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Rogue Cultivator Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Immortal Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji, Immortal Lan Yuan | Lan Sizhui, Dreams, Pining, Sharing a Bed, brief mentions of wwx's past death(s), WangXian.mp3, Getting Together, I guess getting back together technically, Happy Ending, No beta we die like wwx, added tags for last chapter:, Sexual Tension, Sexual Content, Hand Jobs, Biting Summary: The dream shifts. They’re back home now, tangled up in bed, buried under a mountain of blankets and, at least in Wei Ying’s case, sore in all the ways he doesn’t mind being sore in. His husband is radiating warmth, and Wei Ying burrows into his arms happily. He presses his still-freezing toes to his husband’s calves and muffles a snort of laughter against Lan Zhan’s chest when he feels the muscles tense momentarily from the shock. Lan Zhan nips at his ear in retaliation but continues to run his fingers soothingly through Wei Ying’s hair. He melts into the touch. The only thing keeping him from turning into a puddle is the strong familiar arms around him, holding him together, holding him close. When Wei Ying wakes up, he’s full-body shivering. His hand slides across the bed, reaching instinctively for the warmth of someone who was never there to begin with. Wei Ying is an art major by day, cultivator by night. After a seemingly routine night-hunt, he starts getting these strange, vivid dreams of a man in white he’s never met before yet somehow feels like he’s known his whole life…
NOTES: Starting this list off with a bang- soulmate AU, reincarnated WY, and an immortal Lan Zhan who is really just out here living to find his man. I love this one so much because it has such good descriptions of WY's past experiences with Lan Zhan. I love the art imagery and WY being an artist. This was just a fantastic fic with a solid ending.
2 Professor Lan, Babysitter Extraordinaire (4367 words) by Eleanor_Fenyx
Chapters: 1/1 Rating: General Audiences Additional Tags: Fluff, Single Parent Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, professor lan wangji, Mature Student Wei Wuxian, background 3zun, Really just wanted an excuse to write baby a-yuan and LWJ bonding, Modern AU Series: Part 3 of Wangxian One-Shots Summary: “He’s got snacks and his sketchbook and a couple of quiet toys in there, and he can go to the bathroom by himself if you take him to it, and he likes to ask questions in new places, and-“ “Wei Ying.” “Right! Okay! God this is so weird. A-Yuan this is Lan-laoshi, be good for him please, he’s very nice. I’ll come pick you up as soon as I’m done, okay?” “Okay Baba,” A-Yuan says and then - so quickly it’s a surprise that his passing doesn’t make an audible swishing noise like a cartoon - Wei Wuxian darts into the lecture hall, leaving Lan Wangji alone with the scruffy bag and the not-nearly-as-scruffy toddler. Lan Wangji looks down at the boy, who looks back up at him, and he’s still far too adorable for his own good. “Your father is perhaps too trusting,” Lan Wangji remarks. A-Yuan seems to consider this for a long moment before he nods resolutely in a way that tells Lan Wangji he has no idea what he means. “May I carry you?” A-Yuan is quick to let go of his leg to reach up instead, so Lan Wangji reaches down to pick him up under his arms and hoist him onto his hip where he settles heavily like a sentient sack of potatoes.
NOTES: This fic is tooth rot sweet. The speed in which Lan Zhan goes from "kids- indifference" to "I WILL adopt this child and his father" is staggering. It's very short, very cute, and mostly not WangXian but end game wangxian and an excellent cleanser of a fic.
3 running around, chasing each other on the rooftops of China (53898 words) by Verity
Chapters: 5/5 Rating: Explicit Additional Tags: Fox Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Immortal Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji, Alternate Universe - Modern with Magic, Mystery, Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji and Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian Have a Breeding Kink, Female Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, But only for like a chapter and then he gets stuck as a fox, Uhhhhhh this was only supposed to be 15k, Help me i dont know why it keeps expanding Summary: Wei Wuxian, like every other person living in the dazzling era of technology and the modern age, knows that there's a hidden world tucked between society. It reeks of magic, wonder, horror, and everything in between, hidden in the shadows unless one dares to look. If one chooses not to see, they will never find a single hint that something different is amiss. As someone enamored with smartphones and laptops, Wei Wuxian never thought he would stumble upon the mystical. Until one day, his landlord couldn't see him. Or: Wei Wuxian dives headfirst into a shadowy world of magic, where he falls for a mythical figure and discovers a forgotten past.
NOTES: I honestly didn't expect to like this fic as much as I did- I was warry of the tag "Female Wei Ying" as it's not my speed usually BUT it ended up being a solid fic. I do love Foxxian fics and that paired with an eclectic hotel of magical beings ended up becoming sneakily endearing. This fic also has a solid "thawing ice prince/cunning fox" dynamic that is perfection.
4 Be around for the next day (10996 words) by Song_of_Storms
Chapters: 2/2 Rating: Explicit Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, New York City, Bisexual Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Top Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji/Bottom Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Mentions of WWX plus others, Slutty Wei Ying | Wei Wuxian, Trans Nie Huaisang, short king NHS, Hand Jobs, Anal Sex, Lan Zhan | Lan Wangji Talks Dirty Summary: Wei Ying owns a lucky red leather jacket that’s gotten him laid countless times. When he wears it out, someone’s going home with him. He doesn’t care who. He’s not picky. What matters is the jacket works, every time. Then he meets Lan Zhan. [Or, the leather jacket AU.]
Notes: So full disclosure this fic doesn't really have an age difference? maybe it does? unclear -BUT the dynamic between the two gives off very much that. It is filthy but also cute. Intentional bachelor WY has something coming for his sworn oath of singledom named Lan Zhan. Also- this fic features leather jackets!
5 All Old Things are New Again (51656 words) by The Feels Whale
Chapters: 1/1 Rating: Mature Additional Tags: Reincarnation, Modern Setting, canon still happened, extreme post canon, Sugar Daddy, Kink Negotiation, gentle dom!LWJ, canonical levels of consent play, Modern Cultivators, cultivators can recognize important people from previous lives, vaguely, this started out as a cute sugar fantasy and got just incredibly horny very fast, blame LWJ Series: Part 1 of All Old Things Are New Again Summary: Full-time necromancer and part-time cam boy, Wei Wuxian, finds himself unexpectedly homeless. An enthusiastic patron comes to his rescue. Conversely: Immortal Cultivator Lan Wangji has been waiting a long time for his deceased husband to be reincarnated again. In retrospect, he should have anticipated that this is how it would go.
NOTES: What do you do when you, an immortal, finally find your reincarnated soulmate on a cam site. Obviously- become their secret sugar daddy. The premise of this is wild but it's a good vibe. I do love when Lan Zhan is READY to rescue his man.
6 A Sure Thing (40280 words) by ElDiablito_SF
Chapters: 7/7 Rating: Explicit Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Alternate Universe - Pretty Woman Fusion, Prostitution, Unsafe Sex, Explicit Sexual Content, Attempted Sexual Assault, You'd think this would be wild and kinky, but actually they're soft and gross, past Zhancheng and they're still friends, Prostitute!WWX, rich asshole!LWJ, fashion bitch!LWJ, Shoe Porn, background attempted Xiyao, Drinking to Cope, physical assault, Villain JGY, Angst with a Happy Ending Series: Part 1 of Pretty Woman AU Summary: Lan Wangji's business trip isn't going very well. On top of it all, his fiancé dumps him, leaving him without a date to all the boring social functions he's expected to attend. Luckily the rentboy he accidentally picks up while stopping for directions seems to be the answer to at least his temporary problems. Yes, this is the Wangxian Pretty Woman AU.
NOTES: Okay I will state that this fic is very crackish but it was so good. The pretty Woman AU ft sex worker WY and sugar daddy divorcee and absolute BITCH Lan Zhan. Okay I believe there is mention of Lan Zhan's ex but it clearly is not a love match at all and so wildly ridiculous that it didn't phase me (it is NOT a pairing I ever read or seek out either), so I hope that doesn't ruin this fic for you @yiling-laozu-is-loml.
7 Players gonna play (68541 words) by Scrippio
Chapters: 6/6 Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern: No Powers, Alternate Universe - College/University, Alternate Universe - After College/University, Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Theater AU, Kinda, Director Wei Ying, Faculty advisor Lan Zhan, grad student Jiang Cheng, Baker Yànlí, grad student Wen Qing, for all intents and purposes, wanxian are in a teaching au, chengqing is in a school au, and xuanli is in a bakery au, Fluff, First Meeting, Getting Together, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Depression, but like coming out of it, No beta we die like wwx Summary: In which the Gusu University theater club is looking for a new beginning, starting with a new faculty advisor (Lan Zhan) and a new director (Wei Ying).
NOTES: This is one of the fics in which there isnt an age difference really, but Lan Zhan is technically WY's boss so that dynamic comes to play here. This fic is so damn wholesome. It has the junior squad, a bit of college au, brilliant WY, and Lan Qiren wishing none of these things ever came to pass (affectionately). A very wholesome adorable fluffy fic.
8 Overboard (51434 words) by celerydragon
Chapters: 11/11 Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Misunderstandings, Temporary Amnesia, Comedy, hopefully-freeform, Fake Marriage, Fake/Pretend Relationship Summary: Wei Ying, carpenter and single parent (he's doing FINE!) goes in for a repair job on a fancy yacht. After the rich-bitch owner of the yacht falls overboard and loses his memory, Wei Ying completely honourably, and with zero ill intentions, swoops in to save the day by lying about their relationship. There's no way this could go wrong. (based on the 1987 movie)
NOTES: In which Wey Ying (idiot and carpenter) sort of kind of kid naps rich bitch lan zhan post a boating accident and convinces him (badly and not really) that they are in fact married. This is less age difference and more sugar daddy/gege energy BUT if you liked the film overboard, this is even better. Please watch while WY simultaneously sweats and falls in love with the man and hot mess he's created.
9 sunstruck (64376 words) by vesna
Chapters: 8/8 Rating: Explicit Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Getting Together, Idiots in Love, what lan wangji did on his summer vacation, Background LXC/NMJ Summary: Lan Zhan nods as the boat nears the dock and the figure becomes clearer. It's a young man with dark hair down to his shoulders and a wide smile. He is also Asian, and as he turns his gaze to Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan finds himself robbed of breath for the second time that day. The young man is beautiful. He could, Lan Zhan thinks, be Lan Zhan's age, possibly a bit younger. He's tan, wearing a bright pink shirt with the restaurant logo on it, and cargo shorts. He has a small mole under his lower lip. "Hey, guys!" he greets with a wave. "Need a hand?" "Yes, please, if you don't mind," Lan Huan shouts back. He gets up and begins the preparations for docking, handing the young man several ropes. "Thank you, Wei Ying." Wei Ying. That's the boy's name.
NOTES: Lan Zhan has a summer he will never forget and falls for the Hot Boy working at the restaurant. There is a very slight age difference but mostly this is a status difference fic- Lan Zhan has big money money and is technically a customer so the dynamic is there. Anyways- solid fic, good ending :)

11. itmf fic where wwx is cultivating the ghostly path like in the novel. i'd like recs for a cultivation that's more a compassion/empathy-based collaboration that results in the liberation of the resentful dead not an antihero necromancer forcing the dead to do his will for the greater good. thanks ❤️🩵

12. Hi! I was just wondering if you have any good, longer fluff pieces. They can have plot, but in general everyone is happy and no one gets hurt (unless it’s jgs). I know canon makes it a bit more difficult, but if you have any recs, that would be great! I’m just looking for fluff, humor, and plot
Thank you!
how to fall in love with a catfish: a guide by wei wuxian (disaster rat) by bwyn, Yuisaki (T, 54k, WangXian, Modern AU, College/University, Actors, Multimedia, Online Friendship, Drunken Shenanigans, Hijinks & Shenanigans, Underage Drinking, Drinking Games, Families of Choice, Ensemble Cast, Fluff and Angst, Slow Burn, Catfish AU) there's a bit of angst here
Meet Me Friday At Seven by craftyTrickster (luoxiaobai) (E, 128k, wangxian, modern, Fluff, Meet-Cute, Friends to Lovers, Blind Date, lots of texting, almost a chat fic, WC and WLJ aren’t evil but they are annoying, Kissing, Masturbation, Anal Sex, romantic sex, Bi WWX, bi nhs, Single Parent WWX, Slow Burn, Unreliable Narrator) just pure fluff
~*~
13. Hi! I am looking for canon-divergent fics where people think WWX dies but he actually doesn’t? I then want a big reveal when people realize he is still alive/never actually died. Thank you so much!
ahhh I just sent in an itmf ask about WWX dying but not really? I meant to specify that I want him to be "dead" for a long period of time, not just a brief gimmick. Long enough that people mourn him or move on, and then he comes back years later like in canon. Thanks, and sorry for not putting this in the first ask!
🔒Brotherhood by LtLJ (G, 10k, JC & WWX, CQL canon, Canon Divergence, Yunmeng Brothers Reconciliation, Angst with a Happy Ending, Canon-Typical Violence, BAMF WWX, BAMF JC, breaks from canon during the time skip, YLLZ WWX)
WWX and JYL run away by shanastoryteller (WangXian, XuanLi, JYL and JZX lives, JYL and WWX raise JL and LSZ, Fake Character Death)
Something From Nothing by sami (E, 55k, WangXian, XianLi, Minor QingLi, XiCheng, Canonical Character Death, Canonical Character Resurrection, Canon-Typical Violence, Canon Divergence, Assassin's Creed Fusion, Kinda, Assassin's Creed Vibes, Wangxian is endgame, Slow Burn, specifically for wangxian, no infidelity, no partner betrayal, Angst with a Happy Ending) This has canon divergence and wwx being dead long enough for people to move on plus hey he's alive reveal but not exactly the way requester described

today i had an idea. that recess therapy channel, but make it wangxian.
teacher lan wangji, who recently adopted a-yuan, carried out his son’s desires to create a youtube channel interviewing other kids. he’s totally inept at it in the beginning, but fortunately his brother helps. and who would've thought? his son ends up making friends and he really finds children’s minds fascinating.
until their channel gets quite big. like, two million subscribers kind of big. other people interviewing him kind of big. and soon enough, his brother says, “wangji, huaisang wants to be part of one of your videos! he said it looks fun!”
nie huaisang didn’t have a large fanbase without reason. he was a well-known digital influencer with over ten million followers and a good writer. though lan wangji finds him odd sometimes, he accepts it. it couldn't bring any harm.
famous last words.
after nie huaisang, a lot of celebrities wanted to join in. lan wangji imagined it was for that facade of selling a good-hearted image inside the industry, but as long as a-yuan seemed to be enjoying, he continued.
in the two years he had the channel, he progressed to five million followers, hosted many top-tier artists along, interviewed hundred of kids — some more enthusiastic than others, that’s rather true — and received some proposals from famous entertainment companies to work with them, which annoyed lan wangji.
he continued being a teacher, a father and a host content creator for long, and one day, his son was checking his emails with him and jumped in excitement, “baba! look, look!”
lan wangji looked. it was a request from a certain wei wuxian’s agency, that, he later discovered, was one of the singer’s a-yuan and his close friends have been listening to lately. apparently, his rock band was very influential internationally, and when having a tour around china once more, he wanted to join for a video (why would his thirteen-year-old a-yuan be interested in rock music when humanity had the classical ones, he could never imagine).
lan wangji accepted, because again, it couldn’t do any harm.
well, maybe he should learn more about that expression, since wei wuxian was absolutely infuriating.
he was just a handsome, dauntless man in tight black pants and an oversized hoodie with the shiniest smile he has ever seen who got his son's favour in just minutes of conversation and could not, for the love of god, stop teasing lan wangji. lan wangji shouldn't be that affected by someone. he shouldn't be affected by the way he didn't care about social manners and plastered himself on lan wangji's side all the while he interviewed the kids as if they were intimate, but oh, what one shouldn't do truly wasn't how one acted or felt.
he found out that wei wuxian did have a good voice, although he secretly thought that he wasted it with those loud songs about rebelling against the government. he found out that he was exceptionally careful with children, withholding a balance of fun and wisdom; he had that carefree creativity and treated their worries with seriousness, struggling not to let them think he judged them childish. lan wangji was truly amazed at his character, and soon, they had recorded about four videos together.
and when it was all uploaded, the comments and views exploded. people focused more on them together than on the kids. it became the most viewed videos of his channels in no time.
"lan zhan, the numbers are growing each day! i'm so happy for that," wei wuxian said on the phone afterwards (when he proposed the idea of exchanging numbers, lan wangji was hesitant, but wei wuxian insisted that it was for them to share bunny videos, so he gave up on fighting the man, but weeks passed and they still talked more about their lives than just sharing said content). "but tell me, lan zhan, i think my amazing presence did bring some touch to your channel, won't you treat me to something as a sign of gratitude? you told me your family had a rule on being polite..."
they did have one. lan wangji told him once and it was enough to be engraved on wei wuxian's mind. he sighed and said, "mn. does wei ying want to have dinner with us tomorrow?"
wei wuxian laughed in apparent joy, and he shook his head slightly. it would be good to have someone over for dinner once in a while, beyond his brother. maybe he'd even buy some wine and meat for him, just as he said he liked.
lan wangji talked to wei wuxian some more, the other explaining about how his band would perform the upcoming sunday. they also talked about children, books and traveling. and on the other side of the room, a-yuan giggled in mischievousness.

So I just want to say I love your work so far but also random request, Yanqing’s first word. I can just imagine the bets going on for his first word and when he says it no one knows who he’s talking about like AUJSBUENJSNUBD
Aww! Thank you!
I love this request. I actually have a Psych degree so I read a bit on the science behind first words to prepare an answer for this ask.
Barring sounds babies make naturally (mama, dada, baba), Yanqing's first word is Cat.
For a group of well-educated and fairly competitive men, they could not settle for words that were "close enough". Babies made noise that sounded close enough to "mama" and parents took it as their baby recognizing their mom even if the baby said it to a potted plant.
Yanqing babbled but babbling did not denote "words" according to Yingxing. "Any baby can babble. I want a clear word." Jing Yuan did note that the request was "a bit excessive. Don't you think those standards are too high for such a baby?"
"Nonsense, Yanqing will obviously say Baba and know that it is me. I want a victory no one can dispute." Yingxing had bet his most recent creation.
Dan Feng was quite offended at the idea his son would say "Baba over Ba". Citing that it was an illogical thing to bet on before promising a rare set of Vidyadhara armor to the winner.
Jing Yuan had actually betted on "Mimi". "A-die is such a hard thing for babies to say on their first try. Mimi is much easier and Yanqing adores her very much." The item on the line was a rare manuscript from his family's archives.
JIngliu found the whole thing ridiculous but placed her support behind Dan Feng. "If a baby can say 'Baba', it is obvious it would be able to say Ba first." She put a fine bottle of wine that was made and bottled before the rise of Lan.
Baiheng, of course, threw her hat behind Yingxing. Besides being very close to each other, she cited "Yanqing like saying Baba a lot, even if he says it to the soda and the tree. He's bound to recognize that it means Yingxing one day." She had placed a prized starskiff on the line, a vintage, racing starskiff she had repaired.
In the hope of encouraging his first word, they had put in a lot of effort to read aloud to Yanqing. During one of these story times, there was a fluffy, white cat on the cover of the novel. "This is a cat, Yanqing. They're quite cute and are all over the Luofu." Jing Yuan said as he pointed at the animal.
A month after the wager was made, Yanqing shouted his first word in the middle of a family dinner. The family was gathered around the table and Yanqing was seated in his high chair munching on yogurt bites. Mimi moved to poke Yanqing's nose with her cold nose, causing him to pull his feet back and laugh.
"CAT!" Yanqing shouted out, reaching his hand out to pet Mimi's mane. The word was met with a shocked silence before the dinner table descended into chaos.
"What did you say Yanqing?" Jing Yuan picked his son out of the high chair. "Cat! Cat!" Yanqing kept reaching for Mimi, who had started eating the yogurt bites Yanqing left on the table.
Dan Feng's face was a mixture of ecstatic joy and slight disappointment. Yingxing was still frozen in shock before bursting into laughter when Yanqing pointed at Baiheng's ear and shouted "Cat!" Jingliu found the whole thing incredibly amusing and had the bottle of wine opened in celebration of Yanqing's first word.
This development led Yanqing to start calling anything fluffy, white, and/or pointed-eared "CAT!"
Jing Yuan? Cat.
Tingyun's little foxes? Cat.
Yukong, Tinyun, and Qingni? Cat.
Many, many things in Yanqing's little world were called "Cat" which may have been for the best considering what items were on the line.

Dr. Lace, as a practicing Lan Wangjiologist, why do you think Lan Wangji waited until the end of the novel to tell Wei Wuxian about A-Yuan surviving? Like, in universe, because while I think the real answer is that the twist plays out better at the end of the story, it’s more fun to guess why Lan Wangji kept quiet.
"Dr. Lace" and "Lan Wangjiologist" made me laugh for like two days straight. well done anon. well done sjdhfkjsdhlfkdsjf
but you've actually caught me on something that i don't know if i have a true answer!! i mean, as you said there is the obvious reason of it just working a lot better from a storytelling point of view.
us readers don't really learn about a-yuan existence until wwx mentions it the first time as they're hanging out in yiling before climbing the burial mounds, then there's a flashback where we met the wen remnants, they die, wwx is killed, and immediately after we return, we get the blood poll scene, which also immediately reveals to us that the little boy we met is actually now the BIG boy we've fallen in love with a long time ago! we care about lan sizhui long before we even know that he was relevant in wangxian's life before that. "what happened to a-yuan" isn't a looming question that follows us or the characters throughout the story, because a-yuan only comes up quite late in the plot. mxtx wasn't going for a shocking plot twist with that reveal, but merely using him as another piece in the story's theme. we love lan sizhui before we even know he's a-yuan, and knowing that he's now only alive BECAUSE wwx sacrificied all he did to save the wen remnants, even if he "failed" shows us the human side of how worth it was.
but of course that doesn't come without its foreshadowing. note that i don't subscribe to the "wangxian are a-yuan's parents" or "lan sizhui secretly calls lwj 'baba/fuqin'" headcanon (although u can always argue that 一日为师,终身为父 but that's for another day lmao), i find their relationship has a lot more nuance and honestly more depth than that of a nuclear family. we see how he and lan wangji seem to be much closer compared to other juniors (ie hgj personally teaches him the qin language, gives him books that other lan disciples seem to not have access to, etc) and while that is curious, it's not out of place for lwj to have a particular student he wants to train more closely. lan sizhui clearly deserves it! however, once it is revealed just how much sizhui means to lwj, as well as how he gave him both his new "birth" name and his courtesy name, as well as why he'd want sizhui to be under his protection and teaching, it all clicks!
but again, it's simply not a major focus within the plot.
ok cool lace, that still doesn't answer why lan wangji doesn't bring that up in-universe. and you're right! i'm quite fond of tangents
but seriously, i do think that's part of it as well. just like how the question of "what happened to a-yuan" doesn't follow us around the story, that's the same for our main characters. wei wuxian has long been convinced that a-yuan died alongside the wen remnants, so he doesn't ask because he's allergic to reminiscing anything about the past. for lan wangji, lan sizhui is safe (and still amnesiac), and wei ying is back to life, there are a thousand other things they need to focus on before bringing all of that up. and lan wangji is nothing if not focused on fixing the most important tasks at hand, matters of the past can be talked about later unless relevant (it's no wonder that all of lwj's backstroy is revealed to us by the narrator or a different character, after all).
but most of all, i think lan wangji didn't bring it up because he simply did not know how to tackle the subject of the first siege, wwx's death, or the wen remnants with him. it's understandably a very sensitive subject, and lan wangji did not wish to overstep his boundaries by bringing it up when wwx wasn't ready to. again, he's a man of priorities, and he wouldn't risk breaking the scab off the wound unless it was necessary, or wwx did it first.
from those lens, it's no question why he only seemed to consider revealing a-yuan's identity after the second siege, not only because wwx has finally had closure on the death of the wens, but because lan sizhui himself is starting to piece things together, though it is also not something that should be forced. however, after the second siege, things really begin speeding up again, and between wwx watching the wens fade away and having a fight with jiang cheng, he's is clearly both physically and emotionally drained all the way until they get freaky in the bathtub, where things get even WORSE, and then guanyin temple happens which just... yeah. there was enough telenovela drama for one night.
so, once all of that is finally over, and lwj sees sizhui analyze chenqing with a clear sense of reminiscing, lwj finally settles it that he will reveal it. they're not in a hurry, wwx is finally doing okay, closure has been achieved in multiple things, and there are no other priorities at hand.
except that! he doesn't even need to. because sizhui catches up does it for him. and isn't that even more fitting?
but really, since i received this ask i have been thinking to myself "at what other time would lan wangji have revealed a-yuan's identity? and why?" and i just... keep hitting a wall. because revealing extremely charged emotional subjects to a beloved person who has never brought it up to you, about another person who doesn't even know or remember it, it's simply not lan wangji's character. wei ying is alive and safe, a-yuan is alive and safe, tearful revelations can come later, but right now lan wangji needs to ensure that they'll continue that way.
#sorry it took me so long to answer!!#i was originally gonna play along with the joke and write it in short paper format#but i. didn't want to#i will NOT be academic about wangxian. screw proper punctuation#thanks for the ask!!! this was lots of fun!#modao#lace speaks#mdzs

Wei Wuxian wakes up to tiny hands grabbing at his shirt and small whimpering noises whistling over to his ears from beside the bed.
"Baba...?"
It's that part of the night where you can't decide if it's too late, or too early in the day to be awake. Whatever time it is - Wei Wuxian doesn't want to be awake right now. He scrunches his face up and blinks open a bleary eye, trying to find the precious face of his little Baobei in the dark.
"A-Yuan... What's wrong, Baobei?" Wei Wuxian wiggles himself more upright, gently manoeuvring himself out of his sleeping husband's arms. "Did you have a bad dream?"
He reaches out and scoops A-Yuan into his arms and up off the floor as he hears the rustling noises of Lan Zhan waking himself up. A-Yuan buries into his chest as soon as Wei Wuxian has settled him onto his lap, his pudgy hands gripping at the worn fabric of Wei Wuxian's shirt. The faint outline of A-Yuan's ponytail bobs in the moonlight as he nods.
Silently, Lan Zhan shuffles closer to them until he’s sat just behind Wei Wuxian, an arm around each of them. Wei Wuxian leans into his husband’s chest and listens to the rustle of fabric as Lan Zhan rubs his hand up and down A-Yuan’s back. He can feel the worry radiating off of Lan Zhan, pouring into him from where the top of his head fits in the crook of Lan Zhan's neck.
"I... I was a radish..." A-Yuan hiccups as Wei Wuxian shifts to hold him tighter, "And-And you tried to ate me!"
A huff of amusement from Lan Zhan, some of the tension that he had been holding tight slipping. Wei Wuxian can feel himself slide down Lan Zhan’s body as he starts to relax again.
"Oh no, Baobei." he presses a kiss into A-Yuan's bedhead, "Dream-Baba sounds really mean."
"He was." A-Yuan's breaths are slowing down as he relaxes into the embrace.
"But, you know, I bet Dream-Baba only wanted to keep you safe."
A Yuan's little head turns up to look him in the eyes, "He did?" He frowns. "then why did he tried to ate me?"
Wei Wuxian sighs, "Well, before I gave birth to you, I kept baby A-Yuan safe by keeping you in my tummy. Do you know the best thing about A-Yuan being in my belly?" A-Yuan shakes his head.
Wei Wuxian smiles, brings his cheek to A-Yuan's, and smushes them together. "You were all mine, Baobei. And no one could hurt you! Not even scary Dream-Babas." Wei Wuxian turns their faces to look up to his husband above them. "Isn't that right, Lan Zhan?"
"Mn."
A-Yuan lets out a soft sound of understanding. Wei Wuxian lets go of his son’s adorable chubby cheek and turns to look him in the eye. A-Yuan is finally smiling again, his puffy eyes staring adoringly up at them. Wei Wuxian wants to coo over him like he’s a baby all over again.
"Let's get to bed now. Okay?"
"Mkay Baba."
Wei Wuxian lifts A-Yuan up again and drops him into the newly made space between him and Lan Zhan as they all lie down, both of them turning to face A-Yuan and cuddle their Baobei to sleep. Wei Wuxian pulls the covers back up over all of them, and he and Lan Zhan reach their arms over A-Yuan to reach each other, arms resting softly in a lattice-like blanket over their son.
Wei Wuxian cuddles closer and presses a kiss to A-Yuan's cheek.
He pauses.
"Lan Zhan!!! Did we just kiss A-Yuan at the same time?!"
"Mn." Wei Wuxian can hear the smile in his husbands voice.
"We're so cool, Lan Zhan." Wei Wuxian smiles at his husband's lazy eyes across from him, peaking up from behind the top of A-Yuan's head.
Wei Wuxian quickly decides that just looking is not enough.
Wei Wuxian pushes himself up onto his elbows and leans over to kiss his husband, and is surprised when he meets his lips halfway there. Wei Wuxian grins into the kiss - his Lan Zhan is so eager!!
"Baba!! A-Die!!!! ... Eugh."
Wei Wuxian laughs as Lan Zhan kisses the mole beneath his lips. "This is perfectly normal A-Yuan! Chances are that you might want to do it with someone someday!!"
"No."
Wei Wuxian settles back down and nuzzles his nose into A-Yuan's forehead. "Well, that would be fine too, Baobei. Sleep well, my loves!"
Lan Zhan's hand tightens around his waist, "Goodnight, Wei Ying."
A-Yuan sighs happily into the darkness.
...
"Don't eat me whilst I'm asleep, Baba."

the fire and the forest by androids_fighting93
Sad, heart-breaking but also warm and endearing. ❤️
Quotes:
He could just kill them all. It wouldn’t be hard. He would burn down the world for Lan Zhan, who was his zhiji, who fought thirty-three men for him. He did not know this about himself until now, but he knows that it’s true. The only thing that gives him pause, that breaks through the haze of resentment, is that Lan Zhan and A-Yuan will die if he gets himself killed here. That’s assuming the resentment would let him die again even if he tried — he doesn’t care to test that theory.
————
He only means to check on A-Yuan, not to wake him, but the boy stirs the moment that Wei Wuxian approaches, sitting halfway up in his bed. He rubs his eyes with the back of his hand, and mumbles, “Hi, Baba.”
Wei Wuxian’s breath catches, and for a moment he thinks that he’ll burst into tears again. Baba.
A-Yuan can’t call him that.
Oh, Wei Wuxian had joked about it — this is my son! I birthed him myself! — but he knew it wasn’t real, a game except when it wasn’t, except for how sometimes he wished that he was the kind of person who could be a father. It made the Burial Mounds feel a little less like a tomb and a little more like a home. Like he was building something good there, something permanent. He’d only ever wanted to build something good.
T, 15k
Summary:
He wants to take Lan Zhan far away from here, somewhere no one can ever touch him again. Kidnap him, he supposes; that’s what he is now, on top of all the rest. A kidnapper.
-
Wei Wuxian doesn't die in the siege.

· ✦ Right Here ✦ ·
The journey to the location the corpse wanted was slow, due to Lan Wangji’s injuries and Wei Wuxian’s rigid body. The ever silent Wen Yuan peered over Wei Wuxian’s shoulders as he held onto them, eyes big and round as he looked at who he onced called rich-gege.
Lan Wangji couldn’t focus enough to even notice.
Upon arrival, Lan Wangji swayed, knees shaking as he collapsed. If not for Wei Wuxian who had been in front of him, he would definitely be on the floor, but his resentment did the job of keeping his legs locked so he didn’t fall with all three of them.
“Lan Zhan…” Wei Wuxian used his resentment to support his arms, supporting Lan Wangji with one while setting Wen Yuan down with the other. “A..Yuan…” He gestured to the dilapidated bed in the abandoned home loosely. “Dust…”
Wen Yuan scampered over quietly to the wooden bed to remove rubble and dust, wiping as much off as he could with his little hands. While he did that, Wei Wuxian very slowly stepped forward, one foot after another until he stood next to it. “Yuan…”
The little boy moved out of the way, starting to look around for anything for the hurt gege to rest his head on. “Ah!” He tugged on the shredded curtains, and with a few big heaves, he fell back in a heap. He popped out of the gray cloth, the sight making the corpse’s eyes squint slightly in what Wen Yuan thinks is his way of laughing now. “Xian-gege...” He speaks very quietly in a hoarse tone, much more quietly than he usually does, as he toddles clumsily back over with the armful of cloth.
“Thank…you…” Wei Wuxian carefully lowered Lan Wangji to the bed first so he was sitting, supporting him with one arm while Wen Yuan helped him fold the curtain into a make-shift headrest with the other.
Once Lan Wangji was comfortably settled on his stomach and his head resting, the corpse exhaled quietly as if whatever he had just done with the little boy was quite the task. Well, it was, but not when he was alive it wasn’t. “A-Yuan…” He holds out his hand slowly for the boy to take, then helps him get on the bed to sit beside the man. “Stay…”
Wen Yuan whimpered and held onto Wei Wuxian’s robes, a little tremor in his shoulders. “S-scared, baba…”
The corpse froze momentarily, but then allowed himself to fall to his knees once more and lean into the arms that came to hug his face. This was no surprise to Wei Wuxian. He’d not seen it all, but the little boy had seen too much. “Baba…will be…outside…pick…herbs.”
“Baba…”
He nuzzled the boy to comfort him, but for a time, all Wen Yuan did was cling harder. “Watch…Lan Zhan…Baba…will be…right…here.”
Lan Wangji stared at the two with half-lidded eyes, feeling a deep aching throb move over his back in waves. “I won’t let anything happen to him…” His voice came quiet as if trying to match their volumes without thinking, but really it was just the exhaustion.
Wei Wuxian lifted his head slowly, his hand once more naturally returning to the little one’s back in slow, silent strokes. His gaze was calculating, but then he spoke once more. “You’re hurt.” He repeated, leaning down to hold his mouth against Wen Yuan’s forehead in what seemed to be a mock-kiss before gently scooting him back onto the bed. “Don’t…touch…Lan Zhan..’s….back.” The corpse leaned in and whispered something into the child’s ear, before finally letting him go to get up.
Lan Wangji’s eyelashes lowered in slow, drowsy movements. Ah…his back must be a mess if the other could tell where he was injured. He couldn’t find it in himself to regret it though, not as he watched the slow retreat of black robes through the broken doorway with blurry eyes.
His eyes felt heavy, but much more so as a small warmth leaned into his side carefully and held his hand. He wanted to turn his head, but it hurt too much, he was too tired…too…
Too…

The language of flowers
Wei Wuxian loves gifting his husband flowers - but they're never randomly chosen. His bouquets have meanings, always - because the only item he has left from his mother is a book on the language of flowers. She used to tell him flowers aren't just pleasing to the eyes, they can also whisper to the heart. And as with the sparse memories he has of her, Wei Wuxian has kept these words close to his heart.
On his first date with Lan Wangji, he brought him a bouquet of blue hydrangeas. Gratitude, grace and beauty. He had attached a little note to it, explaining the meanings of the flowers and how they reminded Wei Wuxian of Lan Wangji's elegance and beauty, and how he had been grateful that Lan Wangji had asked him out on a date. He also added some advice on how to care for the flowers, and a lipstick stain kiss in the corner of the card, just to be cheeky.
On their one year anniversary, he brought Lan Wangji a bouquet of blue clematis flowers. The base petals shone a pretty, silvery white, and they layered upwards into shades of blue. Loyalty, courage, mental strength. It had not been an easy year, with their families disapproving of their relationship, the backlash of it, scandals after scandals. But they stayed true to one another and their love regardless.
They had two flower bouquets at their wedding. Both gentians. Justice and victory, prevailing through hardship. And a symbol for Lan Wangji's late mother, who would grow gentians in little flower pots and call them her windowsill garden.
When A-Yuan's adoption papers came in, both Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji made him a beautiful bouquet - sunflowers, gerberas, marigolds and daisies. Joy, happiness, optimism. He had kept telling them how much he loved flowers and how he wished to visit a field of colorful ones like he read in his story books. So they brought a patch of flower field to him when they picked him up, and stopped to laugh and chase one another in a lavender field on the way home.
Wei Wuxian wanted to open up a flower shop. Lan Wangji gifted him the key to his dream job into the petals of a red rose.
---
Lillies are fragrant, large flowers, white, pink or orange. Innocence, peace, beauty.
Orchids mean "I will always love you", everlasting devotion to the very end.
Gladioli symbolize strength of character, integrity, faithfulness.
Lan Wangji picks up two of each, and ties them separately with red and white ribbons.
They're beautiful, fresh, colorful.
He lays them onto Wei Ying's grave with A-Yuan.
"Do you think baba would like them?"
"Mn."
A-Yuan smiles, tearful, looking at the small oval picture of his baba on the tombstone. "I hope the flowers whisper something nice to him today."
Lan Wangji can't find it in himself to speak, the knot in his throat is too tight.

sharing my wangxian phlebotomist!wwx/blood donor!lwj au from twitter here (a summary here if you wanna see)
--
The hardest part of the adoption process was supposed to be endless paperwork and screenings and the anxiety of not being good enough to meet high standards of the court.
It wasn't supposed to be A-Yuan's first doctors appointment.
His pitiful screams fill the small doctor's office. He's clinging to Lan Wangji's shoulders like there a lifeline, hiding and all LWJ wants to do is bundle up his son and carry him back to safety.
But these are mandatory vaccines he needs in order to attend pre-k. So he cant.
Nurse: Shots are never fun at this age, huh He would beg to differ; they're never fun at any age But see lwj isnt afraid of the shots themselves. Hes terrified of the sight of blood. His BFF loves horror movies & he watches them with her bravely by staring at the corner of the tv
When lwj gets his blood drawn, he looks closes his eyes and imagines being in a cold pond somewhere. But he's never been afraid of just the shot before.
He's helpless in the face of his son's distress. The nurse sighs, saying theyll have to try again another day.
A-Yuan sniffles into his baba's shirt, exhausted from the crying fit. His eyes are still watery and he looks around the room with such fear in his eyes, before withdrawing back into the safety of his baba's chest.
Lan Wangji has no idea what to do, only cradles him closer
Thankfully, LWJ has someone who can help. His best friend, Jiang Yanli is a child therapist and has been helping him prepare his home for A-Yuan.
If anyone knows what to do, it's Yanli-jie
JYL: Zhanzhan, have you tried showing him its not scary?
LWJ has not, bc he's terrified
JYL is the only one allowed to call him Zhanzhan. In Uni she was the one who mentored him his first week of school. Someone slipped him alcohol and he got deliriously drunk.
Yanli-jie was the one who found him and took him home. This is what they told the cohort but actually…
JYL: seeing his Baba get a shot and be okay might motivate him to be more brave
LWJ certainly doesn't feel brave. He's thinking of the blood flowing from his veins and then LEAVING them to go who knows where. It sounds barbaric
He has the distinct memory of learning what a period is in middle school and promptly passing out
He is not a fan of anything related to blood
But LWJ has learned that Yanli-jie knows what she's doing, so, despite the way he can swear he feels his blood pumping with fear, he agrees...but there's a problem.
LWJ: I am up to date on all my shots. How can I show him it is safe?
JYL: Hmm....I have an idea. My brother is a phlebotomist! He can help.
LWJ is confused. Last he heard, the younger Jiang is a prosecutor who makes a living viciously yelling in a courtroom.
JYL: Not him, Zhanzhan. My adoptive brother, A-Xian. I bet he would be happy to help you. He works at the blood bank at Yiling Clinic! The perfect exposure!
For who?, LWJ wonders. A blood bank sounds like a house of horrors to him. And a person who chooses to stick a needle in people and remove the very force that gives them life? He cannot imagine getting along with this person at all.
--
Yiling Clinic is a community clinic in a part of town Lan Wangji has never been to, especially since the Gusu Group has their own private hospital.
But this is where Yanli-jie's phlebotomist little brother works.
A-Yuan clings to the back of his legs as they approach the receptionist, a young man with amazing cat eye makeup named Mo Xuanyu
These two definitely do not fit the bill for their usual patients, with their designer clothing, so he asks with some skepticism: Um, can I help you?
LWJ has spent the last two hours siking himself up for the blood part, he isn't prepared at all for social interactions. He flounders like a fish.
LWJ: …I am…We are here for…
A shout comes from behind them: Ah! A-Yu, is that A-jie's friend? Zhanzhan?
LWJ flinches until he sees a man sprinting towards them. The 1st thing he notices is this man is wearing lilac scrubs with little white rabbits on them.
The 2nd thing he notices is this man has the most enchanting smile he's ever seen. Already, LWJ feels more relaxed.
The man winks at him: You like the scrubs? A-jie said A-Yuan liked bunnies, I figured this would help keep him calm.
LWJ does not blurt I like bunnies too. But only just.
Beside the man is a pediatric nurse named Wen Ning, no relation, who says he's here to help with A-Yuan
Yanli-jie's little brother, the phlebotomist, introduces himself: Ah! Sorry, Lan Zhan. Jiejie always calls you that so it just stuck. I'm Wei Wuxian. You can call me Wei Ying if you wanna make it even.
Strangely, LWJ feels no need to correct him: Lan Zhan is fine, Wei Ying.
WWX smiles so brightly, LWJ feels dizzy with it.
WWX: Now where's the little bunny himself?
A-Yuan has been clinging behind LWJ's pant leg, tilting around just enough to peek with one eye at this strange gege.
WWX: Maybe not a rabbit then, a radish who likes to hide away!
A-Yuan becomes offended: I don't like radishes!
WWX laughs: Me neither! But Qing-jie says they help us grow big and strong, so they can't be all that bad huh?
WWX is crouched in front of A-Yuan, draping both arms across his knees and resting his chin in one hand. He waits.
LWJ admires his patience. The longer WWX waits, crouched and rocking back and forth in front of A-Yuan, smile gently and welcoming, the more A-Yuan's natural curiosity gets the better of him.
Eventually, his son comes out from behind his leg to touch a black bunny on his sleeve
A-Yuan: I like this one. We only have a white bunny at home.
WWX: I like the black bunny too! What's your bunny's name?
A-Yuan: Banana, bc she tries to eat Baba's banana every morning, and you are what you eat.
He recites this with all the solemnity a 4 yo could possess
WWX's laughter echoes through the lobby: Well! You're very right, A-Yuan. Maybe you aren't a radish after all then. Tell me, what do little boys eat?
A-Yuan: I'm not little! I'm 4 and a half!
WWX: Right, right, I sincerely apologize for my mistake. What do big boys eat then?
A-Yuan purses his lips and taps his chin, pondering his question carefully: Hmm… jelly beans?
WWX looks like he wants to laugh more, but instead says: I see, I see. Thank you for your wisdom A-Yuan.
He looks up at LWJ, dark eyes dancing. LWJ's heart rabbits against his chest
WWX: If your baba is ready, we can head down to my cave if you'd like. I have a lot of cool machines I'd love to show you.
A-Yuan's eyes widen into saucers as he gasps: A cave? Wowww
They grin conspiratorially at each other, before turning bright eyes up at LWJ
LWJ feels warm and much more relaxed inside, so he nods: Mn. We may go.
A-Yuan cheers and holds WWX's hand as the head downstairs.
LWJ trails behind making small talk with WN, watching WWX and A-Yuan swing their hands and skip ahead, feeling something warm blossom in his chest.
The hallway to Wei Wuxian's lab isn't anything like Lan Wangji expects.
The rooms at Gusu are all perfectly pristine and sterile, painted white to promote serenity, rest, and healing.
For one thing, he'd raided a Halloween store at some point and hung up all sorts of decorations, mostly vampire themed. There's one that's says "I vant to suck your blood!" except suck is crossed out and replaced with "donate". Wwx and A-yuan giggle together at wwx's fake accent
It's definitely not up to Gusu General's strict standards. For one thing, there're beanbag chairs in the hall outside. Wwx says it's to feel more comfy while others wait, as he's the only phlebotomist on staff and it can take a while. A-Yuan personally tests each one.
His lab is…adequate if far too small. There's a desk that's overrun with stacks of papers and textbooks and a shelf that's filled with even more. The actual space where blood is drawn is, thankfully, sterile and clean. Though he's decorated with demons demanding blood for food
There's a temp controlled room where the blood is stored, with a red door and the words "Blood Pool" written in menacing barely legible font
Despite the…interesting decor, the room is homely and, surprisingly, welcoming. A-Yuan at least is having a very fun time getting a tour
Wwx patiently answers all of A-Yuan’s questions, even the endless why's, with utmost sincerity, even when his answers are purely nonsense.
Lwj can't stop the fond smile from lifting the corner of his lips. A-Yuan had never warmed up to a medical professional so fast.
He's pulled from his musings when A-Yuan grabs his sleeve: Baba! Blood-gege says this machine makes blood spin around!
Wwx burst out laughing: Blood-gege? I love it!
Lwj is enchanted, head repeating those last 3 words again and again as wwx fondly ruffles A-Yuan's fluffy hair
Wwx: alright, now that you're familiar with my beauty Chenqing (referring to his bloody spinny machine lwj does not want to think about), shall we get down to business?
He says this with his bright dark eyes glittering at LWJ. Right. The blood donating part.
Lwj gulps, nodding. A prisoner walking up to the gallows.

The Damage You Do: ch 23, pt 1
Happy start of the week (for those sensible people who begin their days on Sunday)! Also, start of a new chapter~
Previously
~
wwx bounced nervously in front of lwj’s door. It was early—so fucking early. Even with A-Yuan’s ungodly sleep schedule, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d been out of the house this early for anything other than an emergency supply run. Lingering in front of his dom’s door at 6:34 in the morning was definitely not an emergency supply run. Sex was not an emergency supply—although, he was sure nhs could probably have come up with some way of arguing that, actually, it was.
He sighed, glancing behind him as the elevator door dinged shut, lhr and their sons disappearing back into the parking garage. His son had surprised him the night before, when he had mentioned that lhr had offered to have him over for a play date. He had been excited. He had then insisted that he did not need his baba’s company for this play date! Apparently, baba was now embarrassing! His baba was not needed for anything but food and an allowance now! wwx had not been expecting this turn of event until his adorable child was a teenager! Where had the years gone!
Please Note: A-Yuan simply said he liked lhr and wanted to meet his son, to thank him for giving him his soupy medicine. He said his baba could come, but he liked lhr, and if baba trusted him to take care of A-Yuan, A-Yuan would trust his baba and lhr. A-Yuan, at no point, said his baba was an embarrassment, nor that he no longer needed his baba.
wwx had, of course, assured his son that he could call him at any time, giving his son his old phone—his son quickly showing him that yes, he knew how to use it because he wasn’t stupid and had been watching all the adults in his life use their phones since he was born—just in case. A-Yuan had been a little more nervous that morning, but the moment lhr’s son, Lan Jingyi, popped out of the car, bouncing with way too much energy for so early in the morning, A-Yuan had been nothing but in love with the little boy.
wwx and lhr had joked about a spring wedding on the ride to lwj’s apartment. In two years time—next spring would be much too soon. The boys needed to get to know each other first! A-Yuan had been thoroughly confused, and while ljy hadn’t exactly understood what they were talking about, wwx was left with the sense that the little boy knew he was being made of fun of and was judging them for it.
It was very cute.
They had ridden up to lwj’s apartment with him, lhr assuring him that lwj would be awake, and that regardless of whatever mischievous vibes he was giving off—because lhr was giving off nothing but “It’s going to be a good day, because it’s starting with fucking with my cousin” vibes—the lwj would appreciate seeing wwx that morning.
Then A-Yuan had asked who lwj was, and wwx had awkwardly babbled about how he was now working as lwj’s personal assistant. ljy looked unconvinced, which was slightly concerning given how young the boy was, although wwx was sure that at that age he had already known his parents were involved with the mob as well. Hopefully, all ljy thought was he was doing something mob related, not that he was lwj’s new sex toy. A-Yuan had asked if he could meet “Baba’s Boss,” and wwx had had to promise he would ask if they could have a play date another day, lest his son demand to meet him right then and there.
He might be willing to surprise his dom with… whatever this was at 6:34—6:35—in the morning, but he wasn’t willing to spring a surprise meeting with his son of him. Not now, not ever. The last thing he needed was for lwj to be weird around his son. He didn’t think his dom would purposefully be weird, and while he had obviously met ljy before—and the boy seemed to like him, given he had started regaling A-Yuan with stories of his older cousin—wwx didn’t want to risk… something. He didn’t even know what. He just knew that A-Yuan and lwj meeting felt like it should be planned.
Should be special.

Xiantober 2023 - Day 1: Dad!Xian
Word Count: 1,323 Pairing: Wangxian Tags: Parent Wei Ying, Children with unnamed ex, Smooth Lan Zhan, OC Children, MPREG
Wei Ying heaved a sigh and watched as his three young children ran around the park. Today was his first day off in almost two weeks, and he was exhausted. Between getting up early (never an easy task for Wei Ying), getting the kids ready and off to daycare, the grueling tasks at work, and then feeding, bathing, and playing with his beloved children after work, he was wiped out.
He wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and sleep for 1,000 years. But that's not what parents get to do.
Of course, Wei Ying loved his children, and he would do this every day without question, but that didn't mean he wasn't tired. He wanted a new job as well, but with such little time for himself, he never really had a chance to apply to new places.
So for now, he'd deal.
After rubbing his eyes, he noticed the twins fighting for control of the slide and he frowned. "Baihe! HeLian! Share the slide!"
A little pouty chorus of "Yes, baba!" sounded and Wei Ying nodded, pleased that they were listening.
Wei Ying stifled another yawn before he heard someone close by clear their throat and he turned to see who it was.
He half expected it to be some other parent, ready to complain to him about how he's raising his children, but what he didn't expect, was the world's most beautiful man to be standing there with two cups in his hand, looking rather unsure.
"Pardon me," he started rather unsurely. "I hope you don't find this rude or uncomfortable. But I noticed how tired you seemed..."
He frowned, realizing that likely wouldn't be something someone would want to hear. "But, I just grabbed a tea for myself, and thought you might like a coffee as well."
At first, Wei Ying had half a mind to tell this beautifully sculpted man, with his perfectly tuned voice to fuck off.
Of course he was tired! He was a single parent of three, had no help, had a shitty job, the list went on and on! The last thing he needed was some god-like stranger telling him how tired he was.
But then he heard about the coffee.
Then, he noticed the little boy peeking out from behind him.
Oh.
Oh, he was just another parent looking out for another parent. Wei Ying gave a tired smile and nodded. "You have no idea how good a coffee sounds right now, thanks a bunch! How much was it? I can pay you back."
The man handed over the coffee and then gently touched the little boy's head. "Jingyi, go play."
He nodded and hurried off to play and Wei Ying noticed he instantly gravitated towards his A-Yuan.
"You do not need to pay me back," the man finally addressed. "May... I sit?"
"Oh, fuck! Yeah, sorry." He grabbed the bag beside him, moved it to the ground, scooted over for him as the man sat down. "Are you sure? You definitely didn't need to do that. Buy a stranger a coffee I mean."
"I am certain." He assured, he seemed uncomfortable, like he wasn't used to striking up conversation.
"Well, thanks a bunch." Wei Ying took a sip of the coffee and sighed happily. "It's hard wrangling three kids into a coffee shop, and my coffee maker is broken- go figure, so I haven't had any today."
"Is... your partner not able to help watch them while you get a cup?"
"Oh, pfft, nah. That ass is a deadbeat that I haven't seen since the twins were born. It's just me."
The man seemed surprised by that, unsure how anyone could just leave their children, or their significant other. Especially one as beautiful as this man.
"You're son is cute." Wei Ying spoke up, breaking the man's train of thought.
"My... son? Oh! No," he shook his head. "Jingyi is my nephew."
"Oh! Shit, my bad. You two just look so much alike, I assumed. Sorry!"
"No, it's alright. You're not the first to assume."
Wei Ying smiled a little, the coffee certainly waking him up a little. "Well, he's lucky to have such a handsome uncle!" A pause. "Caring! I meant caring uncle!"
The man's lips quirked briefly into a smile before his neutral expression returned once more and Wei Ying thought he'd kill to see that smile last.
"Mn. And your children are lucky to have such a beautiful father."
Wei Ying's eyes widened and he sputtered lightly, spitting some of his precious coffee out. "Wha- n-no, i--" He laughed a little. "I appreciate the compliment, but I'm a fucking mess." He glanced down at himself, clothes that he was pretty sure weren't in the clean pile, a few food stains from the kids, dark circles under his eyes, his hair was a mess.
"I disagree." The man said simply, taking a sip of his tea. "I think you are stunning. Perhaps... Perhaps it is a good thing you 'look like a mess'. If you looked any more gorgeous, you would be causing accidents."
Silver eyes widened in disbelief, looking at this Adonis of a man as if he said the most outrageous thing in the world. And he had! Yet. Here was Wei Ying, with his heart fluttering against his ribcage. He cleared his throat and hid his face against his coffee cup.
"I don't think that's fair coming from the world's most gorgeous man."
"Most gorgeous? But I'm the one who said it, not you." Once more, Wei Ying sputtered, looking at this man in absolute disbelief. But the man in question only raised his brow lightly, lips twitching into a faint smirk that was gone almost instantly.
All of it left Wei Ying flustered beyond belief. He had never been flirted with so shamelessly before!
Normally, he was the shameless one. So all he could do was clear his throat, take a sip of his glorious coffee, and introduce himself.
"I'm Wei Ying."
"Mn, it is a pleasure to meet you, Wei Ying. I am Lan Zhan."
And that is how two strangers met for the first time, kickstarting their future together.
For three months, Lan Zhan 'courted' Wei Ying. Which mostly meant he came over and cooked dinner while Wei Ying tended to the kids. It meant he stayed past their bedtime and talked with Wei Ying until the other passed out from exhaustion.
Lan Zhan would then carry him to the bedroom, and leave, making sure the door was locked.
It meant he would invite Wei Ying and the children out, happily helping with them and playing with them to give Wei Ying a brief moment to himself.
Eventually, it meant convincing Wei Ying to leave the children with Lan Zhan's brother or uncle so they could go on dates.
To say that he spoiled Wei Ying was an understatement. Their dates ranged from beautiful restaurants, to quiet picnics in the park, even to lavish in-home dates where Lan Zhan made a beautiful meal and the pair soaked in a bubble bath with candles for just a tad too long.
Wei Ying was head over heels.
When Lan Zhan officially asked him to be his boyfriend, he made it very clear that he wanted to be a part of the children's life. How could Wei Ying say no? He adored this man. The children loved him. They meshed so well together.
In less than a year, they were married. Wei Ying and the kids moved into Lan Zhan's beautiful home,
Wei Ying ended up putting in his two week notice only a month later when he learned he and Lan Zhan were expecting their first child together. Lan Zhan insisted he not work during his pregnancy. With his job, they would be fine.
Nine months later, they welcomed a little girl called YueHa to their family. And for once, life was truly perfect.

Summary (Part One): “Baba,” A-Yuan is saying, tugging happily on his father’s hand. “Wei-laoshi is here!” “Yes, I see.” Lan Wangji dips his head in Wei Ying’s direction, then begins to gently steer A-Yuan back into the house. “Let’s step aside so that he may come in. Wei Ying, thank you for making time in your schedule.” “Oh, it was no trouble,” Wei Ying says, waving a hand. It was: he had to rearrange two lessons with other students. “Really, I’m happy to do it.” He realizes he’s still kneeling on the porch, and clambers to his feet. “Besides, money is exchanged for goods and services, right? It’s your money! There’s no need to thank me.” Lan Wangji blinks. “I suppose… Yes. That is one way of phrasing it.” (Or: Wei Ying gets a commission, a tutoring job, and a crush.)
Summary (Part Two): Lan Zhan had known, right from the start, that he was fucked. Wei Ying had blown into his life like a hurricane. He was messy and loud and opinionated, too much and all at once. He was talented and smart and witty and beautiful, and Lan Zhan wanted to drown in it. (Was it possible to drown in a person?) (Or: food as a metaphor for love, five times Wei Ying cooks for Lan Zhan, and one time Lan Zhan cooks for him.)
Mojo's comments: This was sweet, with the timeless and well-loved Harlequin plot of the young art tutor and the wealthy, remote, single parent. It goes just as you would hope!
