This one is extremely strange, so strange that I think I must have got it wrong somehow? Here's a line from Akechi's Black Mask navigation. Yeah, you know which one this is going to be:
Here's the English audio:
Is it me, or is something a little... off, here? Look at the portrait. Doesn't he look a little... calm? Downbeat, even?
Here's another use of the same portrait. This is not a laughing statement:
Akechi has a laughing navigator portrait, of course:
it's okay goro we know you're very normal
So we've got a mismatch between the portrait and the English line. Let's have a listen to the Japanese audio:
They're a bit... different? He's not laughing, he's not gloating. Just "Huh, I guess that was a thing that happened..."
So what's going on here?
translation time
Akechi 敵1体逃走!仲間に見捨てられたようだね。 teki ittai tousou! nakama ni misuterareta you da ne This one just got betrayed by its teammate! Ha, imagine how that feels! [lit. One enemy fled! Looks like this one was abandoned by its friend, huh?] One more enemy out of the way! So this last one got dumped by its friend, huh?
Let's talk about 見捨てる misuteru—"to abandon". misuteru pops up regularly in the P5R script. It comes up when someone's being ditched, bailed on, forsaken by God—generally left behind: if your friends run out on you, you are being misuterued.
Are there any contexts where misuteru can mean betray? Sure. If you leave a friend held hostage to die, the shadow will accuse you of misuteruing them. nakama o misuteru is used consistently here, similarly to Akechi's line above—"you betrayed your friend by leaving them to die".
Here's Kawakami, at the end of her confidant, resolving to never abandon any of her students again:
Kawakami でも、これからは君のことも守るよ。教師として、絶対、見捨てたりしないから。 demo, kore kara wa kimi no koto mo mamoru yo. kyoushi toshite, zettai, misutetari shinai kara. But from now on, I'm going to protect you too. As your teacher, I will never betray you.
What does Kawakami do? She tries to help her student Takase, but in the end abandons him; she believes she betrayed him to his death. But she betrayed him by giving up on him; by abandoning him. She misuterued him.
Here's Futaba, during her apology to Joker for dumping him at the start of Maruki's reality:
Futaba てかむしろ怒るだろ!{F1 82}のこと見捨てたんだぞ!? te ka mushiro okoru daro! <given name> no koto misuteta n da zo!? Why wouldn't you be!? I betrayed you! Don't you get that!?
Under Maruki's influence, Futaba loses herself in her happy family life, and leaves Joker to handle things essentially alone. Futaba betrays Joker by abandoning him; she misuterus him.
how does akechi use misuteru?
Besides the usage above, Akechi has two other uses of misuteru in P5. One is in his deleted Mementos mission from the third semester:
Akechi 君たちのことだしこういう人間は見捨てておけないだろう? kimi-tachi no koto da shi kou iu ningen wa misutete okenai darou? Well, considering what you and your group do, I imagine you could hardly abandon him to his fate...
This doesn't mean "betray". There's no relationship between Joker and the mission target—there's no betrayal. There's just an abandoning—a refusal to help.
Akechi やっぱり馬鹿は⋯お前らだ。見捨てて行けば、よかったのに⋯ yappari baka wa... omaera da. misutete ikeba, yokatta no ni... The real fools... are you guys. You should have just abandoned me here a long time ago... [lit. the real fools... are you guys. if only you'd [just] abandoned me here...]
Now this line is a doozy. Look at that use of misuteru here; in vanilla, it was his only use of this word. Akechi has just got done explaining that being unwanted and cast aside is the thing he fears most of all. He has shaped his life around it. He's done murder for it. Everything he's become, he became, at base, because he was abandoned—because he was misuterued.
It's here, at the very end, that he turns his back on that. This unwanted child who has killed to be wanted—he looks at Joker and the Phantom Thieves on the other side of the engine room shutters, people who've proved that they value him and want him around, for himself. And he says to them—no; you're idiots; why didn't you abandon me, like everyone else has? He says to them, I won't let you die here, and I care about that more than I care about being abandoned.
Everything about Akechi is resolving at this moment. He transcends his obsession, fear and trauma. And that word misuteru is doing a ton of heavy lifting—because if Akechi can't have what he wants, then he'll reject it. He makes a free choice, for once in his life.
This moment influences him for the whole of the third semester. And when we hear him say misuteru later on, we should remember this. When black mask navigator Akechi notes the Shadow being abandoned to its fate, he isn't laughing about it; he's thinking about it. In his head, he isn't the betrayer, thinking of Joker in the interrogation room; he is the betrayed, being left behind by everyone he ever hoped would care about him. He's being left behind behind that engine room door.
This line as localised, taken in isolation, can transform your reading of Akechi's character and motives—which is why it's so important to look at the whole of canon, and not single cherrypicked lines. Step forward, "I hate you"
unhinged ranting
Lemme be clear here: this line has always pissed me off for its inconsistency. Akechi reacts against the engine room ending in the third semester, sure. Almost the first thing he does is to rub that deal they made in Joker's face. He's desperate not to be viewed as that pitiful object on the floor. He's desperate to keep up walls between himself and the others—for whatever reason.
But after 1/2, he doesn't really gloat about what he's done. He doesn't argue with Futaba's threat to him on 1/11—"if you ever betray us again, we'll make sure you regret it."; he just agrees to her terms, which he knows are well deserved. He's not walking around like "lol, I got you arrested and tried to murder y'all and there was that whole thing"; even unhinged combat Akechi doesn't do that. Except for this one line. When he suddenly reveals that, deep down, he thinks the whole thing was hilarious.
Except he didn't do that at all. If he did, I think he'd find the others tolerated him a lot less. And he's already walking a knife edge with many of them.
What was the translator's brief here? Honestly, I have no idea. Did they even have access to the original audio? Did they have time to play it? Did Atlus give them a brief to make this guy just as crazy insane as possible?—because we know they told Akechi's JP VA, Soichiro Hoshi, to underplay it.
Either way, I don't think the line as localised (and as delivered, excellently, by Robbie Daymond) corresponds to the Japanese audio. traduttore, traditore—translators are traitors. Even me

Card Set Hanakotoba
Recently I was discussing with my lovely friend @istoleyourboat about the meanings behind the flowers in this new card set, and I felt the urge to chronicle them somewhere! I thought you guys might get a kick out of it, too, so this seemed as good a place as any to put it.
So without further ado...
1. Hanako-kun - Queen of the Night
The Queen of the Night (月下美人) is a cactus flower that blooms just once a year for a single night. Because of this, the most heavily associated meanings with the flower are "transient beauty", "fleeting love," and "the urge to see someone just once."
The short-lived life of this flower feels quite fitting for our ghosty boy! I also like how the flower looks both beautiful and unsettling...all around a fantastic choice by AidaIro.
2. Nene Yashiro - Strawberry Blossoms
If you have paid attention to the Hanakotoba in TBHK before, then Nene being associated with strawberries should be nothing new to you. Regardless, the prevalent Hanakotoba for Strawberry Blossoms (イチゴ) are "love," "innocence," and "you make me happy."
The "you make me happy" one makes me want to kick my feet around and squeal a little. Isn't that cute!? I also feel the strawberry is especially fitting for Nene because it seems like something she would grow in her Gardening Club.
3. Kou - Clivia
Otherwise known by the names Bush Lily or Natal Lily, the Hanakotoba for Clivia (君子蘭) are "sincere," "noble" and "good-hearted."
I think this all fits very nicely with our resident good boy Kou, hm?
4. Teru - Bird of Paradise
The Bird of Paradise (ストレリチア) symbolizes "faithfulness," "magnificence," "a bright future" and "superficial love."
Even at a glance this flower really pops out at you, making it a great fit for the ever-impressive Teru. I really, really love this choice!!
5. Sakura - Hellebore
Otherwise known as the Christmas Rose, the Hellebore (クリスマスローズ) represents "reminiscence," "never forget me" and "notice my woes."
The way this beautiful flower seems to cast its head down makes it look almost sad. I suppose that's why it has such pitiful meanings associated with it!
6. Natsuhiko - King Protea
King Protea (キングプロテア), also known as the Sugarbush, symbolizes "strength," "courage," "resilience," and "a king's quality."
If you notice, Natsuhiko always has a little crown-shaped tuft hidden in his hair, so AidaIro associating Natsuhiko with a flower that references royalty pleases me. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding him, but we can at least confirm that Natsuhiko is, indeed, strong and resilient.
(Edit: the flower might be a crysanthemum (菊) instead! Crysanthemums represent the imperial family of Japan, so the association with royalty is still present. The red crysanthemum is a symbol of love.)
7. Akane - Ivy
The plain, non-flowering ivy stands out in stark contrast to the other plants here, but that's because the hanakotoba for it is just that good. Ivy (ヘデラ) means "everlasting love," "I take this feeling to the afterlife," "faithfulness", and "marriage."
Like, if that doesn't scream Akane, I don't know what does.
8. Aoi - Hydrangea
Again, if you've been paying attention to Hanakotoba in the series, this will not be the first time you've seen Aoi paired with hydrangea. Regardless, hydrangea (アジサイ) represents "enduring love," "mystique," and "fickleness."
The hydrangea is also associated with rejection, more specifically the coldness of a person who rejects the romantic advances of another. It's just such a perfect Aoi flower, there's no wonder AidaIro is so attached to it.
💐🌸🌼🌻🌷🌹🥀🌺
Thank you for reading till the end! And I urge you to look up these flowers yourself and see if you can find any meaning to them I may have missed. You might find something brilliant that I completely overlooked!

If you want you can do a "Relaxing with Muichiro", so maybe drinking tee, Cuddeling while Cloudgazing, etc (: and stay hydrated <3
Cloud gazing with Muichiro.
Gray clouds covered the entire sky, creating a gloomy atmosphere that seemed to weigh heavy upon the world. However, the ominous feeling was countered by Muichiro's presence by your side as you both lay down watching the sky together.
“I hate this weather,” you stated, sighing at the dark clouds.
“I disagree this is the best weather," Muichiro answered beside you.
“These aren’t even the clouds you can see shapes in though!” You protested.
“Hmm, you’ve got a point,” Muichiro said just as a ray of sun broke through illuminating the blanket you both were laying on. “Ah there you go, are you happy?” He said and turned to look at you.
“Mhm,” you nodded, soaking in the warm rays. “Hey Tokito, can I ask you a question?”
“Is it useless to point out you already did?” He said with his usual indifference.
You rolled your eyes but continued with your question regardless, “What do you think you would do if you weren’t in the demon slayer corps?”
Muichiro returned to his original position of watching the clouds, “hmm, I suppose I’ve never thought about that.”
You both sat in silence for a moment, giving Muichiro time to mull over the question.
“What do you think you would be doing?” He asked you instead, shifting the focus from him to yourself.
“It is a rather open-ended question, isn’t it? But if demons ceased to exist- I’d think I’d like to live a normal life with you… do the things other humans take for granted. Tend to a house, cook long meals, invite our friends to spend time with us…” you trailed off getting lost in the fantasy.
“Hmm…” Muichiro imagined your vision as he watched the sun break through more of the clouds. “I think I would like that too,” he finally spoke and a soft smile curved on his lips.
A blush dusted your face at his response, and the sun had finally won once again allowing for soft clouds to appear in the sky.
“Do you see that?” Muichiro asked.
“See what,” you responded, looking at the Hashira curiously.
"The clouds, don't they look curious?" he mused, his gaze fixed on the moving clouds. "Perhaps that's us, living your dreams in another life," he added, convinced that the clouds were enacting your visions solely for the two of you.
You looked back at the sky, your eyes focused on the oddly shaped clouds that caught your attention. Though you weren't certain you could see exactly what Muichiro saw, your heart suddenly felt heavy.
The weight of your responsibilities and the uncertain nature of being a demon slayer pressed on your heart. The thought of a normal, peaceful life with Muichiro tugged at your emotions causing tears to sting in your eyes.
“It is beautiful, isn’t it?” You managed to choke out. Noticing your change in emotion and sensing your vulnerability, he gently pulled you closer, encouraging you to rest your head on his chest. "Yes, it is," he spoke softly, his fingers delicately caressing your hair.
Thank you for the request! I hope I didn’t make the ending to angsty for you! I apologize if I did, I just started writing and this is what came out~
Thank you @snowmist-hashira for proof reading this for me!

What got you into HanaKou? Any head canons? :3
Their early dynamic! Hanako being flirty and condescending is so good, and Kou acting super suspicious and confused, switching between "EVIL SPIRIT IS TRYING TO DECEIVE ME!!" and "...oh he knows a lot, he is helpful??" is charming.
Honestly, they are just plain fun.
I stayed in this ship for the soul-crushing implications as the manga went by but I do love their goofier dynamic just as much.
And I do have headcanon Anon! Strap in:
Hanako has mixed feelings about Kou growing up. He likes that he is alive and that he gets stronger with time, not experiencing the pain of being a ghost, but there is an unbalancing feeling that comes from watching the 'kid' grow up, slowly shaping into a new person, an adult, through the years while Hanako is forever 13. It is hard for him to adapt. He hopes to be exorcised before Kou is unrecognizable from the boy he decided to trust, he hopes to see Kou grow all the way into an old man. He mostly tries not to think about it.
Hanako said "I can't wait for you to exorcise me" when they met, but he didn't care all that much about who exorcised him at the time, he just thought it would be useful to have someone to get the job done on sight. Now it needs to be Kou, he really wants it to be him. He is full of self-hatred so he will accept if someone else kills him without fighting, but it won't be the same.
Hanako has internal homophobia since he experienced being alive in the 60s, but it's a strange, oddly 'passive' kind of homophobia. When he gets a crush in the young exorcist arc he does not register it as a crush, chalking it as part of the admiration/respect/trust package, which is a hard mix of feelings to process, considering how apathetic and isolated he has been in his afterlife. He is convinced this pull towards Kou is not that strange for friends and can think things like "If Kou was a girl, or I was a girl, it would be fun to seduce him~" without batting an eye. (I am still not over the genderbend Hanako chapter.)
Touch, and Quality Time, are Hanako's main love languages. Kou's are Acts of Service, and Words of Affirmation.
Hanako gets plenty of quality time and his touch is never rejected, so is hard to get insecure about Kou not liking him, he mostly gets emo about not deserving his love. Kou does not get many words of affirmation, the Mokke has heard more compliments about Kou from Hanako than Kou has, this can make him insecure and extremely confused about how Hanako sees him, or how trustworthy Hanako is, so he is rarely soft or vulnerable with Hanako.
Kou gets so surprised he either goes speechless or embarrassed when Hanako gives him sincere compliments without hiding behind his "I am such a mischievous and playful ghost! am I being honest or am I being condescending?~" attitude. (It's rare but it happens)
Kou bakes him donuts when Hanako is sad and the ghost bothers him when Kou is sad. Hanako is a bit weird when it comes to comforting others, if what makes the exorcist sad is directly his fault or he feels like it is his fault, the ghost grows very guilty and invested, if it's not his fault in any way, Hanako becomes somewhat detached, still worried but not obsessed over it: He will help, but his worry isn't visible, is easy to believe he doesn't care about the problem at all.
If Kou ever met Amane he will be '???' cause the idea of an alive Hanako does not compute. Amane will find him rude, but kind of funny.

BokuAtsu Hc's
A/N: THESE ARE VERY MUCH SELF INDULGENT I have way too many ideas for them honestly.. these are just a few 🫡
-Both of them are switches in bed and they're also both incredibly insatiable. With Atsumu never not being horny and Koutarou having inhuman stamina they can go a few rounds every night, even after a game. The aftercare usually consists of Koutarou murmuring something about how he's hungry, much to an amused Atsumu who insists they clean up first. They'll bathe together, talking about any and everything while they rub the stress out of each other's shoulders and then get something to eat. After that they'll cuddle together, listening to the sound of the other's breath until they fall asleep
-Jealous Kou, possessive Tsumu. Atsumu knows his boyfriends hot, that he takes up the spotlight and all eyes are constantly on him, so if somebody's flirting with him at some club even with him being right there? Let them, but he'll stop them if it goes too far. Atsumu's the only one that gets to see the pretty reactions that Koutarou gives him when they're behind closed doors. Koutarou, on the other hand, can't help the little pout that crosses his face when his fans give Atsumu googly eyes or somebody wraps a hand around his forearm. Atsumu smooths it out for him when he notices, always having something snarky to say about how Koutarou isn't all that subtle, but he'll still kiss away his worries despite the light-hearted jabs
-"Wanna go on a date?" "Sure" and then it's just the same things they did as friends because both were either frustratingly unaware of their crush on each other or they were in heavy denial for a very long time LMAO. Always sitting next to each other on the bus, Atsumu's head eventually leaning on Koutarou's shoulder when he's tired. Holding hands because it's 'cold' outside (it's not) and brightening when the other entered a room. Neither of them were slick
-Koutarou tries to cook for him sometimes but somehow it always goes wrong. He wants to replicate that onigiri that Osamu makes? The rice is sticking to the bottom of the pot. He reads something online about how breakfast in bed is seen as romantic? His heart shaped pancakes are more like burnt little blobs. Atsumu will still pretend anything he makes is good, though, but he'll (as nicely as he can) suggest letting him make dinner next time
-They celebrate every win with a kiss. It's mostly Koutarou that started it, excitedly flinging himself into Atsumu's arms and pressing shaky kisses to his forehead. The first time it happened the faux blonde tumbled over on the court in surprise, but he's come to expect it now, twirling Koutarou around with a grin and gently cupping his face. If they lose and Koutarou gets sulky, Atsumu's right there to lift him off his feet by talking about the positives even if he himself is upset too. Mentioning the plays that did go through, spikes that Koutarou sent that had the blockers scrambling as they took point after point… it never failed to bring that smile back to his face
-Technically, both of them were the first to confess. It's a night after MSBY had a party to celebrate their win at finals and they've had a few drinks. Not so many that they'd regret it in the morning, but enough that some of their inhibitions were clearly lowered. It comes out when they're on their way home, cool fingers laced together; a grounding mechanism. Koutarou says Atsumu's name and Atsumu says his, light laughter filling the air when they realize there's something heavy between them. Something that's gone unspoken for far too long. "You go first." Atsumu says, but Koutarou shakes his head. "We can just say it at the same time, can't we?" and they both whisper an I love you that the wind almost carries away

Kogami and the tale of Sakura 🌸🌼
In "Psycho-Pass," the cherry blossom holds significance for Shinya Kogami as it is associated with his past and his present.
His Close Bond with Sasayama (Past)
In Japanese culture, the cherry blossom serves as a reminder of their friendship and the fragility of life. And so his relationship with his former colleague and friend, Sasayama.
Cherry blossoms are often used as a symbol of transience and the fleeting nature of life in Japanese culture. In the case of Kogami, the cherry blossom represents memories of Sasayama, who had a profound impact on him. Sasayama's death deeply affected Kogami, and additionally, the cherry blossoms are often depicted in scenes where Kogami is reflecting on his past or contemplating the nature of justice and revenge.
They symbolize the beauty and impermanence of life, as well as the bittersweet memories of his time spent with Sasayama.
😭🤧
His Deep Connection with Akane (Present)
...The cherry blossom holds symbolic significance in the relationship between Akane Tsunemori and Shinya Kogami, though its interpretation can vary depending on the context and individual perspectives.
Shared Memory: The cherry blossom serves as a shared memory between Tsunemori and Kogami, representing their past experiences and the bond they share as colleagues and friends within the Public Safety Bureau. It may evoke nostalgia between the two, for simpler times, and moments of camaraderie amidst the complexities of their work.
Reflection of Transience: Like in Japanese culture, the cherry blossom can symbolize the transient nature of life and the impermanence of relationships. In the case of Tsunemori and Kogami, their partnership is fleeting, as Kogami eventually leaves the Public Safety Bureau to pursue his own path. The cherry blossom may serve as a reminder of the ephemeral nature of their connection and the inevitability of change.
Unspoken Emotions: In some interpretations, the cherry blossom may also symbolize unspoken emotions or unfulfilled desires between Tsunemori and Kogami. The beauty and fragility of the cherry blossom could reflect the underlying feelings or tensions that exist beneath the surface of their professional relationship, suggesting a deeper connection that remains unexpressed.
Overall, the cherry blossom holds multifaceted symbolic meaning Kogami's life.
While, Kogami doesn't initially prioritize building a personal relationship with anyone, his interactions and experiences ultimately shape his connection with other characters.
The profound impact that Sasayama's presence and absence had on Kogami's life helped shape Kou-chan's character development.
Whereas, Tsunemori's importance to Kogami may not be as immediately as his connection like what he had with Sasayama, yet her role in his life and her influence on his character are significant and cultivate his present journey in PSYCHOPASS-verse.

Holiii, For a long time I have thought that JSHK's ending tells us or makes a metaphor for the end of the story.
So I decided to do a quick analysis of what the ending can tell us :)
First we see Nene walking and how she leaves her friends behind and how the further she goes things get worse, as if something bad was going to happen, because even though they are on the surface they are not safe.
In the next scene we see Tsukasa and Hanako walking towards where the other is, they get together and there is something bad, a problem, a catastrophe, as if in the place where they are both everything goes wrong.
Then there is the scene where Kou encounters Mitsuba but he disappears, while Kou remains on the surface and continues moving forward, which from my perception tells me that he will move forward with his life and will only be left with the memory of Mitsuba.
Then Nene is left alone and begins to join Hanakp, going deeper into the other side, giving what seems like a kiss with Hanako.
But they begin to sink and get deeper into this.
Nene transforms into a fish and leaves Hanako's hands, watching as Nene gradually moves away from him.
He takes it again to get it out of there, wanting to take it to the surface.
But it doesn't reach the surface, Hanako can no longer do anything but watch as she sinks deeper to the bottom.
Nene reaches the sky, he cries and there is a sun, but neither Hanako nor Nene are present.
What I understand is that Hanako made a new attempt to save Nene, but again it doesn't go well, he sees that Nene is in danger and tries to get her out of where she is with him, but she dies anyway, which will be a hard blow for him, that's why he sinks or maybe he sacrificed himself for the good of Nene's soul but that means he will cease to exist.
Another theory I have (that you already know) is that Nene will sacrifice herself for Hanako or to reverse the catastrophe that is happening.
There is a lot of symbolism in the ending, I would like you to give me your vision of what the ending can say :)
In fact there is a video in Spanish explaining certain ending things.
Is called: Teoria sobre la muerte de Yashiro nene, It's on YouTube and it's from the user Me No.
It seems to have a direct relationship with the day of separation.
Right at the beginning we see the sun and moon completing each other, then they are covered by clouds that rain in reverse, yes, the raindrops go up instead of going down. This could mean the return of time, or travel from it.
The near bank and the far bank, they oscillate at certain times, keeping this in mind, let's define that the light part is the near bank, life, and the red part is the far bank, death.
Yashiro is the only one who has a white reflection on the red part, representing that she will die soon. When the banks waver and the light part becomes dark, we see Nene being represented by a fish, showing the bond she created with Hanako and that she becomes a type of supernatural.
Following that, we have the twins part. Both are being represented in life, but for some reason, the margins are backwards, the light part is at the bottom and the red part is at the top. Perhaps this could mean the distant past (a hypothesis)
Or, a situation where both were alive but were already supernatural. The union of the twins results in a kind of large hitodama, as if the four were united, at the same time as two flowers (?) bloom on each side. They are also shaped very similar to a heart, so it is open to interpretation.
The moment this happens, the margins change again. We have the red part and the black part, inverted compared to Nene's.
Perhaps the flowers represent the twins and the hitodama the creature that is linked to them both. Assuming the two come together when the seal is removed, not just Tsukasa's but Hanako's as well, something could happen. And it doesn't look good. Both going in opposite directions.
We see Kou meeting Mitsuba, who after death becomes a camera that follows Kou, it's self-explanatory.
Then, we have Nene crossing to the far bank, where Hanako is.
This is where the key is.
The moment of the kiss
Nene went to the far shore to find Hanako and save Aoi. When the two reunite, they kiss. Just like what happened to them at the end.
Then Nene becomes a fish and Hanako throws her away, then sinks.
At this moment we can see a representation of previous events. There are two birds and two fish, they change positions simultaneously between the banks, which could mean the exchange of Aoi's life for Nene's.
Hanako pushes Yashiro away, throwing her into the clear part, part of life, it could represent the moment in which he saves Nene's life, leaves and closes the gates of the supernatural world.
We see Nene crying in the clouds, far from the banks, the drops fall normally, at the right time.
It suggests that it refers to the moment when Hanako tries to sacrifice Aoi and moves away from Nene, closing all the gates (most) to the distant bank. She cries about being away from him and her friend.
The only thing that is out of order is the kiss, considering that the ending scene is a kiss, if it is a hug, it fits perfectly, as they say goodbye with a hug before Hanako disappears.
If it's a kiss, it could just be the anticipation of the moment of reunion.
The order of events is not precise, so this opens up possibilities for discussions

TBHK and shape language
The designs in TBHK are actually so damn good and I need to rant about it SO BUCKLE UP
First of, for those who don't know, "shape language is a concept used in art and animation to communicate meaning based on shapes we are familiar with. When used in a character, object, and background design, shapes can tell a story, show personality, and illicit an emotional response in the viewer without using any words."
Here's the three shapes that are mostly used as examples when talking about shape language:
Circle: soft, squishy, harmless, approachable, changeable
Square: solid, sturdy, strong, supportive, reliable, inflexible
Triangle: sharp, directional, dynamic, dangerous, unpredictable
Let's see how that applies to the character designs in TBHK:
Hanako:
Hanako is a square character, based on his stance, seal, and overall symmetry of his gakuran, and penny loafers. He has some circles sprinkled in here and there in his design, like his round eyes, the buttons of the gakuran and cap along with the emblem and hitodamas. Square characters are usually the heroes, they have the physique for fighting and that "rigidity" shows strength. On top of this, the circles in his design are meant to make him look unthreatening, harmless, child-like even (that last part is with his eyes). Subconsciously, we feel safe with Hanako and we immediately register him as a protagonist.
This is proven by how Nene behaves around him. Initially, she's scared when she meets him for the "first time" but very easily warms up to him to the point she isn't scared to yell at him and later on become friends with him. We are not meant to register Hanako as a possible threat until Kou shows up and forces him to come clean about what he's done while he was alive. His square features are meant to establish him as a strong, orderly and restrained character. His seal, a "square feature" is already a proof of that since we know he's different without it.
Amane:
Trust me it's different. I'm a firm believer of "Amane and Hanako are the same character but at slightly different stages of existence" but there is a difference between their designs and shape language
Amane is still a square character but instead of circle features here and there, he has triangles (his collar + the bandage on his cheek has a few triangles because of the tape despite being a square). Amane doesn't embody the square attributes the same way Hanako does. Amane is inflexible, stubborn and sturdy. The triangles in his design are here to add onto that inflexibility to show his hostility and unpredictability. Amane and Hanako are the same but Amane snapped, finally cracking under the weight of everything he had to endure, and Hanako "lives" with the regret that came from that. Hanako's square features represent the restraint he shows in fear of messing up again. All his triangle features are gone, he is still unpredictable and "dangerous" but differently since he tries to keep it in check in front of Tsukasa and puts up a front in front of people he doesn't quite trust.
Tsukasa:
Tsukasa is a triangle character, look at the way the bottom of his hakama is wider than the top half of his body, giving his entire character a triangle shape which is mostly reserved only for villains/antagonists. We see that shape in his fangs, the collar of the white under-shirt and the V shape of the black, upper half of the hakama. Tsukasa can instantly change the atmosphere of a scene with his presence alone, not only because we know what he's capable of but because his entire design makes anyone go "...That's a villain isn't it?". The circles in his design offer room for doubt since they are also there for a false sense of security, much like his brother. Still, his eyes give off a different feeling than Hanako's because of the pupil placement and his tsueshiros are black which means at first glance, you can tell who is the "evil twin"
Nene:
She's a circle character. Barely any sharp edges, oval shape with the overall body, everything about her makes you think "cute, soft, harmless, squishy". Because of how she is designed, we subconsciously trust her and by extension, most of her decision making (depends), like deciding to be friends with Hanako. She isn't scared of him, so we, the reader aren't; she wants to be friends with him so we fully let our guard down. Because of this trust, we also are happily surprised whenever Nene does something impressive, since she looks harmless (example, Hanako and Yako's reaction to her jumping over the dolls and successfully destroying her first Yorishiro). We also feel more drawn to her, we feel bad for her when she's struggling, her happiness is contagious and we root for her. She's a likable character through her design alone.
Kou:
A triangle character. His stance with his feet apart makes his body adopt a triangular shape. His spirit staff, his fangs, hair and eye shape are all triangular. Triangles don't always mean something/someone is bad, it can allude to its strength. Kou's unpredictability comes from the fact his loyalty can shift, he is stronger than we think, and he starts out as an antagonist since we see that he can hurt Hanako if he tries and actually wishes to harm him, a protagonist. Kou's strength is a big part of his character. He is still on a journey to understand he is strong in his own way and not like his brother, but he's unique from the other characters thanks to his determination, strong will and pure resilience that made him win a fight bare-handed against a whole ass demon. Hanako and Nene both saw his strength and acknowledge it by trusting and relying on him whenever they can, and because those two trust Kou, so do we.
Teru:
Teru is a square character! Surprised me, but nope, it's accurate. Teru carries himself in such a way that radiates poise, leadership, reliability, inflexibility, and we see a glimpse of his strength through that. + His president armband shows that too. Teru does have similar triangle features as Kou, like his hair, and eyes but it's different. Teru doesn't have fangs, his hair is less spiky than Kou's, and all of that is because his whole design is supposed to mislead us. I, and I'm sure a lot of other readers, had a "wait what the fuck-" moment when we saw Teru becoming an important character. With his lack of triangle features, his unpredictability is hidden. He plays the role of a normal high school student, and the twist is that his character doesn't end there. This also highlights again how his strength is different than Kou's.
.
Well this was fun! Before I end this post, let me remind everyone that this is not only my personal interpretation, but shape language isn't always 100% accurate/isn't as literal as some might think. Triangle shapes aren't always villains or signify something bad, squares can mean multiple things, it's complex! The point of that concept is to play around with it to your advantage as an artist which I recommend doing. I hope you enjoyed this, feel free to share your own thoughts too.

Dannymay 2024, now with kitty paws!
Prompts from my AU, also in AO3
Day 24: Electricity
Ok, Danny already knew the transformation forced a random cat shaped form into him and that the cats could be anything. He had gotten shapes from ghosts to living cats, and even felines that were not cats but still cat-like. Though even with all the randomness of his new reality Danny never expected this change at all.
“Raikou?” Danny looked surprised. The sound he just made was not a meow, growl, hiss, or grumbling that he had been doing in his ghost cat form. He said a name as if it was a language.
He was…
“Dude, you are a pokemon!?” Tucker looked as surprised as Danny.
“Rai kou” Danny nodded.
“Uh… which pokemon is he anyway?” Sam asked. She knew of pokemon but only remembered the ones she liked the most. Dark and grass types were her favorites.
“He is a legendary pokemon, an electric type” Tucker said while hugging his PDA to himself. He didn't want Danny to accidentally destroy his delicate technology.
“So, that means he can shoot lightning at that thing?” Sam said while pointing at the ghosts that had disturbed their night.
The ghost was a… balloon was the best way to describe it.
It was spherical with many eyes all around it blinking and seeing every direction, and mouths with sharp teeth appearing and disappearing from time to time. It was unsettling to look at and if one stared for too long it was a guaranteed way to obtain a headache.
“It can't hurt to try” Tucker said.
“Rai” Danny nodded.
Feeling inside himself, Danny noticed an energy of seemingly infinite power welling in him. Willing the energy to the surface, the halfa let it out with a roar and directed it at the balloon ghost. Green lighting came out of his own body, most likely because he was a ghost. And Danny did everything he could not to flinch.
The green electricity reminded him of his own painful accident and the half ghost had gained a respectful fear towards anything that could inflict that much electric damage onto anyone. He was also wary of any machine that could open portals, at least the only one he knew about was the one in his basement.
When the green lighting hit the eldritch balloon, all the mouths opened up and screamed in pain. It was a horrifying sound, though they did not pay attention to the sound when the sight of the ghost flying around erratically, as if it was a balloon losing air, was a lot more distracting. And comical. The three teens could not help but laugh at the strange reaction of the ghost.
Not wanting to shoot a lot more electricity, Danny offered a ride to his friends to get them to the ghost and capture it.
“We are gonna ride in a pokemon!” Tucker looked ecstatic.
“This will be fun” Sam grinned.
That night in the streets of Amity Park, a legendary electric type pokemon and two teens riding on his back continued to hunt ghosts.

gimme 2, 8, and 15 for Kou!!
2. What role does she fill in a friend group?
I'd say shes usually the eccentric friend, despite the shy-girl persona people tend to see in their first impressions. I always place her in a (very loving) comic relief role because she's not taken very seriously by her friends ... she's a bit awkward and manages to have the WORST luck in the world when it comes to getting into trouble she's not even involved in. She is light-hearted, romantic and playful, and a VERY loyal friend.
8. What is an item she owns that means the world to her? What is an item she doesn't like, but can't bare to get rid of?
One thing she absolutely adores is her shitty skull and bat shaped radio that her fathers got her for her 9th birthday. That thing is begging to be put down, the music quality has plummeted over the years but she still uses it every day when she sits at her desk at home. I'm sure she'll keep it well into her later life even if it refuses to work anymore.
Kou personally has a bittersweet relationship with her childhood photos. She doesn't look anything like she did as a child, and sometimes it causes her a lot of gender dysphoria. But she keeps them because she treasures the memories she made with her childhood friends, even if she can't really find herself to share them with others.
15. How does she take up space?
Kou is a big girl, she stands at a tall 5'8 during her later teen years and is very self conscious about it. She stands like a pole and often behind other people. When she sits, she often curls as tight as she can to herself, unless she's relaxed with friends. With friends and her loved ones, she often melts into them like a piece of their missing puzzle, and attaches to them like a mold 💀
In her verses where she has her wings, she often sits like this || She likes using her wings like a blanket she can hide under.
Ask me Questions about my OCs!!
#tai talks#snaggz#mutuals!#Kou Homura#AAAH I HOPE THESE ANSWERS SUFFICE...#she has a few aus i put her in because she is my bread and butter. she goes whatever my dark and twisted mind takes me#but she remains relatively the same! just her struggles change and adapt#god this art is so fucking old. cringes

Ask game time good morning!!! Maybeee considerations on hanakou and Aoinene tbhk..? And classic tsukkiyama haikyuu :3
ask me about a ship and I’ll give my opinions + classify them as does / doesn’t make sense, does / doesn’t compel me
and good night! this is like 12 days overdue lmao... do forgive me. since u asked for three I’m gonna have to go under the cut:
first, hanakou! I’m gonna say it does make sense, doesn’t compel me. I think like. I can see the bones of it—kou clearly cares for hanako, and his belief in him is to the point that he’ll stand up to his own brother about it. and this isn’t just bc he likes nene! it’s bc he cares about hanako in his own right. I think I really enjoy kou’s perception of hanako… there’s this line in the red house where he’s like. it would be easier if hanako was just an evil spirit and that’s always stuck with me. it’s also cool how hanako, for some point in time, is the only person other than kou who even knows about mitsuba. they’ve both got their own repression issues huh? where they just do things without explanation. the reason it just doesn’t compel me is like. I don’t have any real incentive to see it romantically? like. hanako’s relationship with kou is interesting to me in part because of how kou’s relationship with nene and mitsuba affects his relationship with hanako. his love for the both of them and wanting to “save” them aligns with how hanako wants to save nene, only hanako’s operating with a much higher degree of cynicism (and, some would say, realism). so i think it’s interesting to have this friendship between the two in the middle of that, and I don’t really feel an impetus to make it romantic.
aoinene on the other hand… it does makes sens and does compel me! aoinene’s so fascinating to me because like. they clearly adore each other and they’re like. girl best friends yknow. only nene doesn’t tell aoi about the whole ghost thing for the longest time and aoi doesn’t tell her about her issues with her hand. nene kind of idolizes aoi as this perfect popular pretty girl and I think, in some ways, aoi treats nene the same way? but her perception is of this naïve good-spirited kid she can’t quite be honest too. so like. that’s compelling, that they both love each other, but their understanding of the other lacks. and from the first chapters we see that nene’s like, dazzled by teru’s shine and such… she’s obviously kind of taken by this façade and also this very thin and minimal crush that’s not really love, right. so I feel like I could see aoinene be really interesting because aoi absolutely has her own version of this façade. we get into lots of fun stuff about honesty and what’s real and such. so this could definitely compel me romantically even though I haven’t thought about it much.
and tsukkiyama!!! does make sense and does compel me are you kidding me. what more do you need than pride!!! gonna lay down forever about it. tsukishima and yamaguchi are a really fun longtime-friends dynamic because they like. change? their relationship evolves but it doesn’t make them not important to each other, even if the shape of themselves and their interactions change. which is why that bond feels so strong. they both think each other is kind of the coolest actually. I’ve never really had the need to read much fic abt them tho? maybe I’ll look again sometime but its just like. man. their relationship in canon is so good to me already… ch 86-89 my beloved. the manga does a really good job of like… their relationship always feels real and solid but they’re also 100% individual people. and it’s such good development too. neither of them becomes a crazy genius but they develop as people. I love how hands-off tsukishima’s growth over canon is… like he’s a genuine good kid that just thinks a lot, and I don’t think he’d respond so well to people steamrolling over him with their own assumptions yknow? anyways tsukkiyama’s good. works in a sorta understated way where it being not too emphasized makes it work more, yknow. I loved reading haikyuu!! and thinking like why does a guy like tsukki hang around someone like yamaguchi? and then understand. oh. they’re both so earnest.
