The way both Neil and Jean approach survival is so interesting to me. Like their entire lives are built around just surviving - not living, not being happy but surviving another day but the way they go about it is so different.

Neil had a mother who cared enough to try to keep him alive if not happy even if it meant taking on a husband who was called The Butcher and the fucking mafia; even if it meant running their whole lives. Whatever we say about Mary Wesninski, she taught Neil to rebel, she beat rebellion into him; to not go down easy even when you know you will go down, to not make it easy for the bastards who will take you down.

Jean tried to do that, he tried so hard but it's so difficult when you can only completely rely on yourself, when everyone else, even your closest friend will leave you if it meant they got out safe.

Neil will kick and scream and do whatever he wants even when he's being broken down. That is how he survives - by letting you know he will never truly bow down. Jean, left completely alone, can only give in. That is how he survives.

ok I'm still obsessed with the idea of Kevin having a bit of a reputation for violence even before joining the Foxes.

There's this line from Renee in Son Nefes the moment the Foxes find out about Kevin :

"Kevin wasn't exactly a role model"

Like...these are Foxes Kevin's being compared to. If you can't even be considered a role model to three douchebag strikers with attitude problems from the most divisive team in the NCAA despite being a much superior player... you might have some Issues (TM). Also this is coming from Renee, a girl who knows the depths of violence and has ideas about what being truly good means. If she's describing Kevin as 'a bit iffy', I'm kind of inclined to believe her.

I'm pretty sure consistently not getting a good amount of sleep can like, actually be damaging to your heath. I know Tetsuiji wanted to maximize time on the court but I'm pretty sure having all of this athletes sleep deprived constantly is actually going to make his entire team worse.

Riko had to kill Seth not to teach the Foxes a lesson but because he knew that if Kevin ever did weed that he would never have any power over him because Kevin would be too chilled out to scare. Can you imagine the power of Weedvin just laughing at Riko during the Kathy Ferdinand interview, eyes red from what he swears is the early hour, and saying he can never come back to the Ravens because Coach Tetsuji won't let him get Taco Bell?

The blow would be too devastating for Riko to tolerate.
