Jean and Cat are making dinner in the kitchen and Jeremy and Laila are in the living room watching playing a game or watching the news —but the news is playing—

the tv is loud enough for Jean and a cat to hear and then comes a lady talking about a Mafia family that got caught and they say the name Moreau and Jean freezes at hearing the name

and then Jeremy makes a joke and Cat asks about it and then Jeremy says they were caught and stuff, Jean goes to the living room to watch the news and has a panic attack in the living room realizing it is about his parents

and the others don’t know how to react because well they don’t know he got sold nor about the Moriyamas, the news doesn’t say the family had a son and it was Jean but Jean is still freaking out

and then while he’s panicking the group chat goes crazy with theories about Jean being connected to the mafia family as a joke but he takes jeremy’s phone and starts panicking more

then Kevin and Neil blow up Jeans phone and then Cat/Laila/Jeremy start thinking that this may be serious because Jean being a Raven and stuff and then the fbi shows up someone later/ someone should make a fic abt this

I don’t know if I want to laugh or cry about the fact that Jean shows up and starts getting onto everyone about their substance abuse issues in in tgr. Like it’s very amusing watching him literally just walk around confiscating everyone’s drugs and alcohol and calling Andrew “Brisket Lungs”. On the other hand:

- The Ibuprofen Incident ™️ makes it abundantly clear that a huge part of his issue with various substances is rooted not in genuine understanding of any harmful effects but rather in Raven fear tactics

- He is the only person since Kevin left The Nest to clock his relationship to alcohol as a genuine problem that needs addressing. Literally no one has said a word to him about this or tried to help manage either the alcoholism itself or the underlying problems that caused it in the first place.

- He is, again (as far as I recall) the first person to point out to Andrew that there are going to be consequences of him smoking outside of the exy court and that maybe these decisions don’t just affect his own body that he cares so little for (again, sad in its own right that Neil’s wellbeing is placed so highly in comparison to his own)

- The fact that when he believes Jeremy about the no-backsliding deal it is a new experience for Jeremy

So yeah, maybe just the crying part.

i do really like that neil didnt tell kandrew about visiting jean but was clear about the whole fbi nathan trial thing bcus it shows that neil is still the secretive paranoid bastard we know and love but he IS also still talking to them instead of keeping secrets.

"but tumblr user dykekarkat??" you cry, "what about him not telling them about california?? wasnt that a secret??" ah you see this is an IMPORTANT distinction because neil did NOT keep the trial stuff a secret, and really i don't think visiting jean counts as a secret either the difference is that jean is neil's deal. which makes the visit neil's responsibility and not kandrew's business in his eyes.

this is also why kevin is upset upon finding out but andrew doesnt get emotionally invested until he finds out about grayson being a rapist + the timing of his death. jean is SOLELY in neil's court he is under neil's protection. they have a deal the same way kandrew have a deal, and thats why andrew couldn't care less about neil going to california and keeping it from him. on all levels its truly not his business because jean is not under his protection/family. jean is neil's.

it ONLY becomes an issue when andrew realizes that grayson could've hurt neil. now i dont know if its just neil's reticence to share or if andrew knows he barely remembers evermore but thats the crux of his confrontation with jean.

we know neil calls from the airport but he also calls from the mall, when teammates have dragged him out after andrew has graduated and there are too many people and he just wants to go home

kevin calls many times his first year out of school, alone, standing in the liquor aisle of the grocery store and just needing to hear that he still matters

seth would have called after he found out his wife was pregnant and he runs out the door. he calls wymack from his car in some parking lot and gets an earful and a game plan

maybe jean calls when he can't get a hold of kevin and hes spiraling. wymack doesn't let him hang up until jeremy is sitting next to jean and wymack has found kevin

dan calls after her aunt shows up. she has a spine she built herself, and wymack reminds of her of that. he reminds her that yes, she has a soft spot and wants to help, but that he wouldn't have made her captain if he didn't have faith in her ability to stand up for the foxes. and he reminds her that she is a fox as well.

renee just calls to talk. she calls because she worries about wymack as he gets older. she calls after her mom passes away. she calls just to keep in touch.

allison rarely calls. she sees him on holidays and misses him but she finds it hard to keep in touch. one morning a scandal breaks: a gossip site has found allison with her girlfriend. it's too soon, she didn't want everyone to know. and that's the face she puts on publicly, but the morning it breaks she calls wymack just to sit, and to remember the family she was and is a part of that will always have her back

andrew calls because he misses wymack but her never admits it. like neil, wymack was the first man who let him be safe, who listened as he crashed through his meds and let him be himself one night a week and believed in him. andrew calls to say nothing, but that's okay because wymack doesn't know what to say either.

it takes aaron a while to call. he liked wymack, sure, but he always knew his brother was the first choice. it's actually wymack that calls first after aaron graduates medical school with a "congratulations" and an "I knew you could do it" aaron starts sending pictures and videos of his daughters and he even tries to get the original foxes organized for a meet up once a year

nicky calls just to say hi, much like renee. but many years after they've all graduated he calls, and thanks wymack for gluing his family together when he was coming apart at the seams to keep his cousins from drifting.

matt calls after his first kid is born. "I don't want to be like my father" and wymack is a little taken aback because he has a hard time seeing how matt and his father are even related and eventually matt says "I want to be you." and wymacks heart heals a little when he hears that because he is so unlike his own father that one of his foxes wants to be like him

i do find it very interesting how different the foxes and the trojans go about caring for and supporting each other. well, actually, i mostly find it interesting how differently people seem to feel about it, especially in regards to kevin's drinking problem.

the way kevin's clearly unhealthy relationship with alcohol doesn't get condemned or fixed in the original trilogy for example is something that many people in the fandom have been pretty upset and critical about for many years and jean's reaction to it seemed to have really moved people (though that in particular, imo, had at least as much to do with jean's very restricted and in itself unhealthy relationship to food and drinks as with him uniquely seeing and caring about kevin's substance abuse issues. like, yeah, he really, really cares about him, but i don't think he'd have been thaaat much less upset if kevin was coping by eating chips or something. but well, whatever).

but to me, that never really read as no one caring about kevin or thinking alcohol is the ideal way for him to regulate his emotions.

the whole premise of how wymack runs the foxes and how they treat each other is just very built around the idea that all these people have been through awful things and that the way they'll cope with that won't always be pretty. but as long as they cope at all, they'll be around for another day, and another, which'll buy them to actually get better.

which is how you get stuff like wymack, in good conscience, not only tolerating but at times even soliciting underage drinking. and looking past the harder drugs some of the team are doing. and it's how him and the team all accept that neil is definitely lying about pretty much everything but mostly just leave him be. and how they all agreed to let andrew get off his legally mandated medication during games even though that could have terrible consequences for all of them. and how matt's mom said "sure random eighteen year old calling me on the phone, do give my addict son speedballs, you seem to have a higher success rate at getting teenagers clean than me 👍" because they all view life less as you're either doing good or you doing bad, and more as you're either surviving whatever it takes to do so, or you don't, so who cares if you aren't coping in healthy or acceptable ways, as long as you are coping. (and then once they're ready to work on getting better, they do have a support system in place to help them get there)

meanwhile the trojans are mostly pretty normal and well adjusted, so they have a pretty clear idea of what a healthy person who's doing well looks like, and that's what they generally want for other people, especially those they care about. so when they see someone who's not doing well and not dealing with it in healthy ways they are very direct about it, sort of a "your behaviour is not healthy, stop doing it" thing. your eating habits are really restrictive? try eating different food anyways, it's really good, i prommy. you hurt yourself when you're upset? here's how to physically stop this from hurting. you get incredibly startled when you're touched unexpectedly? well, just let me try hugging you again. you drink to deal with your feelings? please don't, it's not good for you.

and obviously that's a lot more normal and straight forward than what the foxes are doing, and it's done with love and support. and a lot of fans find it very moving and beautiful and sweet. but i also know that i'm not the only person who was really put off by this and still finds it kinda disconcerting. to me it feels, especially in contrast to the foxes, who would largely find this sooo overbearing and rude and uncomfortable, kinda like strongarming someone into doing well, with (at least in the context of these specific books) shockingly little regard for personal boundaries.

my point isn't that one's better than the other or anything, i think both approaches are going to work differently well for different people and within the books it makes perfect sense why the different teams would act this way, and it's also perfectly understandable why some people really resonate with one approach and find the other irritating or unkind. it's simply some thoughts that have been rattling around in my head. building up to: nothing really. oh well

you know there's something really heartbreaking in the way jean deep down just really really wants to be loved. like he wanted kevin to look back at him, to see him over the court. even when he knew to stop wishing for it he still mentioned it because it still means something to him. he lets us know kevin could make him do anything and he knew it. he doesn't allow himself to call renee beautiful but he takes her picture with him to california anyway. and he adds her to his list of reasons to live. he could have said nothing when kengo died and riko was about to unleash his grief on him but he still texted renee. he knows he shouldn't bother looking at jeremy like that but he still does. and he doesn't even hide it either. because he wants it. he almost spits it out "why didn't they love me?" when he learns of elodie's death. because deep down inside it hurts so badly that nobody has ever really loved him. he goes around pretending nothing bothers him in relation to being loved. wears a mask so well that he doesn't need anyone. but he wants someone, anyone, to see him and want him back and that just fucking KILLS ME

• "nathaniel" takes up the axe. he's as good a hitman as the little devil of baltimore has to be. he hates it, hates the color red, the color of his hair

• one of andrew's first memories at the house is of nathan cutting a man to pieces and making him watch, making him learn not to flinch, but red is the color of neil's hair, soft, safe, soothing

• before that, though, theres little league. theres learning andrew is talented at exy, theres kevin day, and riko moriyama, and theres jean moreau

• riko moriyama is going to make a big announcement soon, something about the perfect court, something that will finally brand the rest of them as his, and well, andrew has always told neil how much he hates that the pen's ink makes the skin of his face break out

• and neil still has the address of a boy who claims to be his andrew's twin

• for whatever reason the moriyamas and the wesninskis have one of those rich people dinners planned. neil gets kevin to show up, nathaniel gets andrew to leave, kicking and punching and a promise broken

• later in the night, a little after the first course is served and they begin the socializations, neil gets kevin to leave, leave, run as far as possible, *now*.

• he sees jean, grabs his wrist, and takes him outside. theyre walking fast before neil starts running, and then the explosion comes from inside the house, from the basement, and knocks both of them out before they turn the corner. the hathford's men long gone from the scene.

• all renee walker and andrew doe see from where he's been waiting for the little voice at the back of his mind to make sense, is the house bursting on fire, believing that it does so with what he's supposed to protect still inside

• but since i can't bring myself to do this to them, andrew finds him, finds jean, and at the hospital finds stuart, who takes his nephew in

You know I waited and waited and waited for Jean to break down, to cry, to finally let it all out the entire time I was reading tsc but he didn't. Not when his mind flashed back to the Nest, not when he thought of "the Master", not when he thought of Riko. He could live with all that had been done to him by telling himself he deserved it but what finally broke him, ripped him open like the fraying edge of a tattered cloth was the realisation or perhaps the acceptance that his parents hadn't cared for either of them - him or his sister.

Wymack fought to keep Kevin safe even when he knew the risks and was oblivious to Kevin's parentage. He was willing to go to such great extents for someone who was essentially a stranger if not for some long lost short-lived association with his mother. He took on the mafia for Kevin and yet Jean's parents, his flesh and blood, couldn't be bothered to even keep his sister, just 12 years old - innocent to the world and its ways - alive, not even safe just alive.

It wasn't pain, mental or physical, that broke Jean it was betrayal.

(I'm so so glad that he has Jeremy, Cat and Laila at his back now who are willing to listen and wait until he's ready to tell and share his burdens. I'm glad he has Kevin who keeps him alive even as it is with some twisted promise and that he has Neil who will sit in the front of the FBI, lie through his teeth and order a hit on someone who hurt Jean as if he was ordering water at a diner)

versus andrew who’s always been called a monster and is constantly vilified by the media, but who refuses to go down when his people are on the line, will fight tooth and nail and damn the consequences and the potential for harm against himself, just to make sure his people cannot die. he doesn’t go kicking or screaming because he doesn’t go at all, not until he breaks the bone of the person who sliced first

versus neil, a monster’s son, who wears it’s face and it’s mask but only to make sure other people’s monsters can’t bother them anymore. who goes down kicking and screaming because he’s not a monster, he just knows the intricate melody they sing, he knows how to warp it into his own hymn of protection. he knows what it means to be a monster, and yet he’d assume that shape without question if it means the true monsters will be laid to rest.

versus aaron, who killed a man without hesitation despite it putting his life and career in jeopardy, to kill the monster under his own brother’s bed (in his bed, rather). his brother, who’s monstrous reputation spread to him like rainwater down the leash they tied between them. aaron, whose own monster was his lifeline until one day she wasn’t there anymore and he had nowhere else to turn his anger except back at the person who stopped her.

versus kevin, who spent upwards of a decade locked in the monster’s closet, only let out to smile for the cameras. who grieved the boy behind the monster and yet refused to let others paint the boy’s face back over the monster’s real form after it was dead.

versus jean, whose monsters presented him to the world as a monster so they could hide their own sick cruelties behind him. behind the young boy they beat down until he wouldn’t argue otherwise. whose tongue was snipped, wings clipped and bones broken until all he could see in his reflection was a monster that was being given what it deserved. he knows true monsters, and yet he let’s them twist his image into one to keep the ones he cares for safe from them.

versus nicky, who was told his truth was monstrous in itself, who believed it strongly enough that he’d rather die than be that monster, but would rather die than be anything else either. who was ridiculed, exiled, and abused for it but he could never change it and he refused to change it when he realised it wasn’t him that was the monster, it was the ones that hurt him. no matter how much he loved them, he realised coveting the love of a monster only blows back on the people he truly loves, the people who truly love him.

versus jeremy, whose own mental struggles were turned against him to save face, whose family would rather blame him and his sexuality for his brother’s death rather than turn inwards and see how their emotional neglect could spark such a tragedy. they turned him into the monster that they tried to hide from the world, poured their own guilt into him until all he could do was choke it down as though it was his own.

just thinking of the so called ‘monsters’ of the series, and how weighted that word is, the word the neil himself chose, when you consider who has been called a monster in their life, and who the true monsters are. neil, part of a group known as the monsters, points his finger back to the real monsters, as a reminder of what true monstrosity is. cause the true monsters, well, they die so easily in the end, but our monsters? they face that title with acceptance if only it means they can hold out a little longer for the people they choose to help.
