i don’t think people realize how well neil’s demisexuality is written. you can see his emotional connection to andrew change and grow as he learns andrew’s motivations and boundaires long before you can see his attraction to andrew appear.

i think the best example is how neil describes andrew in tkm. he never really thinks about it in detail at all and then all of a sudden “andrew looked as he always had, and neil knew his face as well as he knew every iteration of his own. despite that, something seemed different. maybe it was the sunlight streaming through the window, making andrew’s pale hair shine brighter and his hazel eyes seem almost gold. whatever it was, it was disorienting.”

demisexuality sometimes feels like a switch gets flipped out of nowhere. and andrew flipped neil’s switch because neil trusted him. trust and safety and boundary respect was literally the turn on.

Matt was the first one to make a promise to Neil, that he would protect him from the monsters until graduation. He gets Kevin off Neil during their first fight in the dorm. He protects Neil's things when Neil calls from Columbia. He waits up for Neil to come back from the first night practice with Kevin just to make sure he is unharmed. he knows an abnormal amount about sharks because he had this book he borrowed from the library on a trip when he was like 8 but he never returned it and then they moved away and he took it with him and now it's somewhere in the attic of the columbia house. anyway it was all about different types of sharks and facts about sharks and it was the only book he owned until around highschool so he read it a lot. (hidden under the covers of his bed holding his breath at the sound of footsteps) he used to spend long nights staring at the pictures when he was high and his mom was out and his head was too loud to think. he didnt look at it after tilda died until after he graduated.

when kate started learning sign language to communicate with her younger patients better, aaron learned it with her and they use it together a lot to keep them both on their toes
