Emilia Pérez (dir. Jacques Audiard) x VIFF 2024.
No one can accuse [it] of not taking bold risks. His film collects different genres, from its Mexican gangster setup to some telenovela melodrama crisscrossing with a surreal queer family tragedy and full-on choreographed musical odyssey, for mostly triumphant results thanks to its talented female lead cast that commits to the strange tone.

Zoe Saldaña in Emilia Pérez (Jacques Audiard, 2024)
Cast: Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramirez, Mark Ivanir, Eduardo Aladro, Emilio Hasan. Screenplay: Jacques Audiard, based on a novel by Boris Razon. Cinematography: Paul Guilhaume. Production design: Emmanuelle Duplay. Film editing: Juliette Welfling. Music: Camille, Clément Ducol.
While I was watching Emilia Pérez I was caught up in the audacity of its neat intermeshing of drama with song and dance, but when it ended I felt let down. Jacques Audiard accomplishes what he set out to do: tell a story about a drug lord who transitions from male to female in search of authenticity and redemption. And he does it with the help of superb performances by Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Selena Gomez, and witty choreography by Damien Jalet. But the film is all surface: It doesn't treat its characters as real people but rather as figures in a neo-noir melodrama laden with contemporary attitudes about sexuality and identity. The ending is far more conventional than I expected from such an interesting premise, turning the premise into a gimmick.

Movie Review: Emilia Pérez Directed by: Jacques Audiard Runtime: 2 hours and 12 minutes
Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez is an unconventional musical that defies expectations and challenges the boundaries of the genre. This is not a film for everyone, but for those willing to embrace its bold narrative and unique storytelling, it offers a profoundly moving exploration of identity, transformation, and redemption.
At its heart, Emilia Pérez is a beautiful and deeply personal story about a hardened male cartel drug boss who dreams of living authentically as a woman. Desperate to escape the violent life that has defined him and protect his family from the consequences of his actions, Emilia (played with breathtaking depth by Karla Sofia Gascón) enlists the help of Rita, an overlooked and underappreciated lawyer, to fake her death and begin anew.
Gascón delivers a breakout performance that is nothing short of transformative. Her portrayal of Emilia is raw, vulnerable, and captivating, capturing the internal struggle of a character torn between the life they’ve led and the person they long to become. Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez take on roles that subvert their usual typecasting, delivering nuanced and surprising performances that add depth to the ensemble.
While Emilia Pérez is framed as a musical, it is far from the typical song-and-dance fare. Audiard infuses the film with a haunting and operatic score that underscores its emotional weight, creating an atmosphere that feels both intimate and epic. The musical elements are seamlessly woven into the narrative, serving as a reflection of the characters’ inner lives rather than a distraction from the story.
The film also shines in its exploration of themes of identity and freedom, juxtaposed with the dark realities of cartel life. It’s a delicate balancing act, but Audiard handles it with sensitivity, offering moments of beauty and hope amid the chaos and danger.
With its unconventional approach, Emilia Pérez may not resonate with everyone, but for those who give it a chance, it is a richly rewarding cinematic experience. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling to challenge norms, break barriers, and illuminate the complexities of the human experience.
