I had never heard of this movie before this video popped up on my YouTube recommended (it’s a pretty basic run through of the film’s issues). Aside from all the very obvious things wrong with this movie, the other thing that sucks about it is that it’s very much Oscar bait. It doesn’t exist as a film so much as a grab for awards. The video I linked compares it to Traffic, wildly regarded as the worst Best Picture winner in the history of the Oscars (but could potentially be the second worst in a few months).
The fact that absolutely no-one on tumblr is talking about the Emilia Perez movie is just.
It has everything this hellsite loves. The music. The queerness. The Selena Gomez. It has Goncharov vibes but make it Mexican. Wake up y'all.
EDIT : Not gonna delete the post because it's good to let people know of what's wrong with the movie. Look at the tags and notes to learn more about the issues surrounding the movie 👉
(and everyone chill and educate people before you attack them)

The fact Emilia Peréz used AI voices enhancers for some singing parts (said by the sound mixer itself xx) angers me so much more because you had non singers like Angelina Jolie learning to sing Opera for María, and of course, Cynthia and Ariana singing live for all of Wicked but I’m still supposed to believe the EP movie deserves the accolades it has gotten along with the Best Musical win over Wicked. I feel like it’s very disrespectful for actors that put in the work. Mind you, The Brutalist also used AI and this and Emilia Peréz are the front runners for Best Picture. I’ve never seen such a messy Oscar season in a while. And the Oscars have the biggest chance to do the right thing including Brazil’s I’m Still Here win for Best Foreign Film.
#emilia perez#anti emilia perez#i hope all of the controversies allows conclave and the substance to get the biggest leap in award season#along with wicked#but I heavenly doubt this#plus i’m still here for best foreign film#oscar’s#wicked#the brutalist

Imagine being Diego Luna, having been the executive producer of a documentary that talks about independent journalism in Mexico and how it faces the problems of violence and forced disappearances due to drug trafficking and corruption in the country to the point of displacing, silencing, disappearing and/or killing journalists, then you go to the Golden Globes and see that they award a film by a Frenchman that gives redemption to a drug trafficker just for transitioning, when said Frenchman admited in his interviews that he did not investigate, nor was he interested in knowing the context in which Mexico lives at this moment.
Anyway, watch State of Silence, so you have the context why Emilia Pérez is a disgrace.

not sure how to say this without it being misconstrued but I as a Lebanese person who's family has fought against Zionism, and as a bonafide movie enjoyer do not know how to discuss the increase in Hollywood films (The Brutalist, A Real Pain, September 5, Lee, Emilia Perez, etc) centering Israel and the Holocaust. I do not know how to discuss that these films will be used in one way or another (intentionally or not) to manufacture consent for the US Backed Zionist genocide of Palestinians in Palestine. I don't know how to voice criticism of how the influence of military funding in Hollywood shapes patterns in which films are made and awarded that ultimately align with foreign policy - WITHOUT that criticism being dismissed antisemitic, or conspiratorial. I'm not saying at all that these films aren't important stories, or are without artistic integrity because I don't think that. It's just......again, I do not know how to say this without it being misconstrued in bad faith. I was born in the mid-90s. I grew up on post 9/11 media. I know what US-made, Hollywood-produced soft propaganda looks like and it looks like a lot of film and television being greenlit and celebrated that also happens to align with and even justify the USA's imperialist foreign policy.

hi tumblr! this is a not-so-friendly-but-really-tired reminder that please please PLEASEEEE stop giving emilia pérez your time and energy!!!
i'm not so eloquent to enlist all the things that are wrong with the movie so here's a quick thread i found on xtwitter:
i'm not trans myself but members of the trans community have also critized the narrative of the movie because of this
yes, i know we all love musicals but this one? ain't it. i know everybody's eager with trans representation moreover if it's a trans actor in a main role but this film? ain't it. really. and not this trans woman, a full racist and classist who called 'gatos' (cats, derogative) to mexicans for not liking the movie. really. just so you know this movie is soooo bad that not only mexico but all latin american countries are so angry because of it. that's why it hasn't released here yet.
also, to all people who tries to defend this movie as 'a cultural, policial and social diagnosis of mexican reality that mexican film industry always tries to hide under the rug' (in words of the film press campaign that defends emilia pérez). there are dozens of mexican films made by mexican directors and screenwriters that talk about the violence in the country, most of them with all the hurt and respect (even the not-dramatic ones) that is needed in a topic like this and not making it a cheap musical. here are some of them:
the most recent? sujo which was released last year too and talks about a niño sicario (a child hitman for the narco) that didn't get any nomination btw!!
so yeah, take your money and energy elsewhere. maybe go to watch "i'm still here" the only latino (brazilian) movie that is nominated this award season that talks about a mother and activist coping with the forced disappearance of her husband during the military dictatorship in brazil because that's how you should treat such sensitive topics, thanks.
#emilia perez#selena gomez#golden globes#academy awards#the oscars#dearindies#trans media#mexican film#this is not a mexican film btw it's french!#so pleaseee stop putting this shit on my dash thanks#karla sofia gascon

Emilia Perez is a joke of a movie and the US should feel ashamed to claim it as some kind of artistic masterpiece worthy of film awards.
Is insulting to every single mexican who as suffered the violence and fear drug cartels enforce in our country. The absolute audacity of a group of foreigners without an ounce of respect making a caricature of something that actively keeps taking and ruining mexican lives is outrageous.
The phenomena of the missing people in latinamerica isn't a hot topic for you to explore in your experimental musical movie. The pseudo social commentary based on the most basic view of a problematic the creators clearly don't care enough to learn about is shallow and disrespectful.
This is the egotistical vision of a group of people who don't respect out culture nor our traditions nor our people, and who are actively dismissing our voices because their oscar bait bullshit movie is more important to them than the people they disrespected.
I really don't care how good you think the script is, or how "artistic" it may be, or if you liked the songs or if the main actresses (none of them mexican btw) gave the preformance of their life. This movie should not exist because it was made from the arrogance of "I'm gonna tell how things are and how they should be because I just know better despite the fact this isn't my country nor my culture and I didn't even bother to reseach."
And the result is a collage of insentive takes and stereotypes disguised as a "nuace and smart social commentary", triving off of the ignorance around what Mexico really is. Everything around this movie has been non-mexicans saying "we don't care what mexicans have to say, we did this movie because we really wanted to and we could."

learning that Sujo a Mexican movie touching on the subjects of the killings and violence in Mexico was in the list to be nominated in for an Oscar for best film, lost this opportunity because of Emilia Pérez, a movie made by a white French dude that apparently knows nothing about Mexico, and decided to make a musical out of a current problem that affects the life of millions... is white interesting.... 🤔
#.blah blah blah#I need to watch it#But aspects about it already bother me#I also don't care about these awards#But I care about the issue here#emilia perez
