It was Helen's face that launched a thousand ships, but you unleashed Achilles. How were you to know that poets would sing of his rage? - that innumerable men would meet their deaths at the end of his grief-stricken spear? How were you to know when you went to battle in his armor that you would never return to him? - that you had brought about his death as surely as your own? He wept - and his mother in the hepths of the sea heard his cries. He wept - and he dirtied his face, and tore at his hair, and wished for death. Eternal glory was not worth the price he paid. It was not worth the loss of you, Patroclus, whom he loved as his own life. What was Achilles to do when his heart burned with you on the pyre? What was he to do when his heart burned with nothing but ashes in a golden urn? He was nearly a god-son of a goddess, best of the Greeks. He fell to an arrow, the poets say, guided by Apollo himself. The poets are wrong. He was nearly a god- but he was mortal, and he fell to that great mortal weakness: love. You would have followed him anywhere, even into death. You must have known that he would do the same.

You will not get a second chance.
No matter how much I wish I could give you one.
Did you know that you mended my heart just to break it again? Did you know that from the moment I met you and talked to you, heard your voice for the first time, I wanted to hear it always. Just seeing your name sparked something within my soul, a fire that had never been lit.
My hands were so much smaller than yours, but they fit together just right. You were a whole foot taller than me, yet our bodies molded together like water in a glass-perfectly. And when you kissed me, it was like my lips have always been meant for you. Your hands in my hair belonged there. My name on your lips was a prayer. I wanted to dance to every song in the kitchen with you. I wanted the chance to cook more dinners at eleven o'clock at night. I wanted to say goodnight at 4am when you would go home and hope that one day you would stay, so then I could turn over and say good morning. I wanted everything with you. I wanted to grow with you. Everyday. In every season.
But, as it turns out, you yourself... you were just a season. You were my favorite one that I have gone through. Why the fuck did the solstice have to come and change it all?

In a kinder world, Mary Jabassa lives to a ripe old age. She and her wife K.T. Concannon run a greenhouse and nursery called The Green Place.
In a kinder world, Furiosa and Jack are happily married and living in a peaceful working class neighborhood. They've recently started dating a twitchy loner named Max; the three of them get on like a house on fire.
In a kinder world, Joe Moore runs the multinational corporation Aqua Cola with the help of P. L. Eater and M. Kalashnikov. Furiosa and Jack both work for him; Furiosa's building a record of sexual harassment and OSHA and EPA violations he's responsible for. He's about to go down.
In a kinder world, Rictus got a better upbringing and lives with his brother Corpus; they're each other's caretakers. Corpus has a degree in astronomy and contributes to several major publications. Rictus collects Happy Meal toys and harms absolutely no one.
In a kinder world, Angharad and company are sorority sisters going to college. They all have bright futures.
In a kinder world, the Organic Mechanic is a critical care paramedic in a big city. He's exactly the same, he just has better equipment to work with. He still has the tree of evolution tattoo; the tally marks on his arm are successful codes he's worked.

In a kinder world, the Octoboss enlisted in the Air Force and is pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering, with an eye on becoming a pilot. He can't seem to let go of his childhood friendship with Dementus; he keeps telling himself this won't come back to bite him in the ass.
In a kinder world, his kid brother Ramboss runs a guide service and competes professionally in motor cross. (This one's for AnimationFan2006)
In a kinder world, Rizzdale Pell is in prison.

My headcanon that is canon and I won’t take any refusals: the Vuvalini general played by Elsa Pataky is Mary Jabassa and Furiosa’s initiate mother, K.T. Concannon, whom Furiosa mentioned in Fury Road.
She initiated Mary when she joined the community heavily pregnant and initiated Furiosa one she was born. K.T. And Mary eventually began seeing each other and had a hand fasting ceremony when Furiosa was 3. K.T. taught Furiosa and her mother Catalan (the presumed language she spoke to Mary telling her that no one could know about the Green Place.) Mary refused to let her come both because the Green Place needed her as a defender and because she couldn’t bear the possibility of potentially losing her wife as well as her daughter if she failed. Also, that if she managed to send Furiosa home but not herself, that Furiosa would still have a mother to return to. Good night I’m going to go cry please enjoy my brain worms. 🫠🫠

Nina is actually a better person than people give her credit for. Like at the beginning of S1, I had the same scenario with Patricia happen to me: new girl at a new school, trying to make friends, and this other girl in my class didn't like my ~vibes~ or whatever and started saying nasty stuff and trying to isolate me. (thankfully in my case no close friends were kidnapped by secret societies in search for eternal life 💀 ) So not only i can sympathize with her situation, but even relate to it.
And what I don't see talked about enough is ( or if people did, I haven't seen those posts) calling out Patricia's behavior for what it really was: bullying. Keep in mind here, that I understand where Patricia's behavior is coming from, since she's being gaslit like crazy. But that still doesn't make her behaviour towards Nina acceptable or excusable.
And I wouldn't have blamed Nina if she refused to accept Patricia's apology, because is not a victim's responsability ( only their choice) to forgive their bully.
Still, Nina forgave Patricia because she's good like that ( and probably didn't want to break the already fragile ecosystem of the house with more hostility even if it was within her right to keep a grudge and refuse Patricia's apology. )
What i'm trying to say, Nina is a good person, flawed but good.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

June 1st
I was writing in my journal about you. I was describing every date, day, moment, kiss, hug, laugh that we shared together because I thought that maybe... just maybe... I would look back at it in years and love to reminisce.
But you ended things two days ago.
And now I am here.
I know I made you feel something. You didn't break that no first kiss on the first date rule for nothing. The way we were already acting on our first date like we had known each other for ages, yet we had only known each other for a week. The way you held me in your arms in front of my door and pulled me in a for a kiss.
And the way you kissed me.
Fuck. If I knew it was going to end like this... I still would have let it happen anyway.

The Prospects
Tumblr media
Note: As always, I try to keep my reviews is as vague as possible. I prefer to go into books knowing as little as possible and I don't want to ruin that for anyone else, but I do give away some basic ideas and tropes used so that readers have clearer idea of what the book is about. If you'd prefer to know nothing, please skip this review until after you've read the book.
If there were a Mount Rushmore for my favorite contemporary, achillean romance novels, The Prospects by K.T. Hoffman would now be up there along with Red, White & Royal Blue and Boyfriend Material. It's that good.
This novel gave me everything I could possible want in a romance. It's wonderfully written, seriously funny, and so very joyful. Here are some highlights and points that I think are worth noting:
This book is full of great characters. Gene and Luis are both so loveable and will be relatable to so many people in so many different ways. The supporting characters are also fun and interesting and add a lot to the story.
Representation: this book feels so inclusive and has so much wonderful and casual representation.
The relationship is a perfectly constructed and well-paced slowburn. There is no "instalove" here. By the time these two get together, you understand why these two want to be with each other and how being with each other improves each of their lives.
It's friends-to-rivals-to-lovers! Gene and Luis were friends in college then something happened that caused some distance and resentment. Now they are forced together and things develop from there.
It's Spicy! This is an "open door" romance with a on-page sex scenes.
Found Family and biological family. Luis and Gene both have great families that feature in some great scenes but there's also found family. The relationships that Gene, especially, has with his teammates is a beautiful part of the story.
Baseball. I normally don't read sports romance books because I don't watch or really care about any kind of sports. This didn't stop me from loving every minute of this book. The baseball plot is woven into the relationship growth in a way that feels natural and that, I think, should keep both baseball & non-baseball fans easily invested in the story.
This book is hopeful and optimistic. While there are moments of drama and angst, there is nothing too heavy or sad in this book. This novel is 100% pure queer and trans joy.
Tags for the book: romance, queer, Achillean, trans character, contemporary romance, sports romance, rivals to lovers, spicy
I highly recommend this book to all romance fans. It comes out on April 9, 2024!

The Prospects by K.T. Hofman
goodreads
Tumblr media
Hope is familiar territory for Gene Ionescu. He has always loved baseball, a sport made for underdogs and optimists like him. He also loves his team, the minor league Beaverton Beavers, and, for the most part, he loves the career he’s built. As the first openly trans player in professional baseball, Gene has nearly everything he’s ever let himself dream of—that is, until Luis Estrada, Gene’s former teammate and current rival, gets traded to the Beavers, destroying the careful equilibrium of Gene’s life. Gene and Luis can’t manage a civil conversation off the field or a competent play on it, but in the close confines of dugout benches and roadie buses, they begrudgingly rediscover a comfortable rhythm. As the two grow closer, the tension between them turns electric, and their chemistry spills past the confines of the stadium. For every tight double play they execute, there’s also a glance at summer-tan shoulders or a secret shared, each one a breathless moment of possibility that ignites in Gene the visceral, terrifying kind of desire he’s never allowed himself. Soon, Gene has to reconcile the quiet, minor-league-sized life he used to find fulfilling with the major-league dreams Luis makes feel possible.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book before, but if you like sports romance this sounds interesting!
