I love when people give their pets names that are usually associated with other types of pets.
My favorites so far: the English bulldog named Mittens, Félix the Havanese, Kitty the German shepherd, and cats named Spot and Maren (a very stereotypical name for a cow in Denmark, both named that way because they have spots)
Though my absolute favorite naming convention is to simply give them human names. It started when my mom named our huge gray tomcat Kurt. Dude would fall asleep on the road and yet the thing that got him in the end was a fight with another cat.
For years I named my dogs after famous scientists at the suggestion of my housemate who wanted our first dog to be named Tesla because of Nikola Tesla (I care very little about cars and Teslas weren’t commonplace yet so I was not prepared for the amount of people asking if I loved electric cars, nor how many people didn’t know Tesla was a person) My next two dogs were Percy (Julian) and Marie (Curie). That stopped when I adopted Ellie because I don’t think dogs should be named and renamed at the drop of a hat once they’ve learned their name. Besides, it’s a reminder that she had another life and another family before me and experiences I don’t know about.
Buuut I might have to name my next dog Kitty if they’re a puppy.

currents.10 [2024]
Tumblr media
selections from my week in media [3-9 march 2024]
[reading]
Cuckoos Three by Cassandra Jean & Mosskat - A really lovely YA graphic novel featuring: boys falling in love, small town bigotry, mental health, a very cool sketchy art style, diverse characters, happy endings, and a goat named Billy. One of my favorite books I've read so far this year.
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi - I read this in one sitting and had so much fun with it. Highly recommended if you love kaiju movies or just people being competent at their jobs.
The Straightest Path by meyari - MDZS canon divergence - Lan Wangji becomes Sect Leader after Lan Xichen is killed in the Wen attack on Cloud Recesses; this changes everything. It's a quick read but a good one.
[watching]
23.5 - It finally started airing and all I can say is: cute, cute, cute.
Cherry Magic {finished: 4 stars} - Thailand's version of the manga was mostly excellent. Tay and New were both great as usual, but once again a drama left significant character stuff to be revealed and resolved at the last minute instead of weaving it into the rest of the show. Apart from that, I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I waited until it was finished airing so I didn't have to wait week to week. And now I'm very curious to see what South Korea's version would look like.
Gruff by Julian Curi (Righteous Robot) {5 stars} - short film - The paper cut animation is wonderful and it's so well done. The story is emotional and heartfelt, and made me think.
Perfect Marriage Revenge {finished: 5 stars} - I loved this drama so much. I was prepared for standard kdrama romance fare, so the soapy-ness of it all was a pleasant surprise. I love me some high highs and low lows.

SAINTS DECEMBER 12
St. Alexander, Martyr and companion of St. Epimachus. Alexander and Epimachus lived in Alexandria, Egypt. They were taken prisoner during the reign of Emperor Decius, then tortured and burned to death. Four women shared their martyrdom: Ammonaria, Mercuria, Dionisia, a mother, and another woman. Dec. 12
St. Abra, Consecrated virgin, the daughter of St. Hilary of Poitiers, born before he became a bishop. Little is known about Abra, who became a consecrated virgin, dedicated to good works among the Christians of Poitiers, in France. Abra died at the age of eighteen.Dec. 12
Bl. Thomas Holland, 1642 A.D. English martyr. Also known as Thomas Sanderson and Thomas Hammond, he was born at Sutton, near Prescot, Lancashire, England, in 1600. Thomas left England to study at St. Omer, France, and Valladolid, in Spain, and entered the Jesuits after ordination in 1624. Going home, circa 1635, he worked to aid the Church in the isles for seven years until his arrest in London. Thomas was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Tyburn.
St. Agatha, 790 A.D. Nun and missionary aide to St. Boniface. Agatha was a member of a Benedictine convent in England, a disciple of St. Lisba. When St. Boniface was conducting his missionary labors, Agatha went to Germany to assist him.
St. Edburga, 751 A.D. Benedictine abbess and disciple of St. Mildred. A member of the royal family of Kent, England, she succeeded St. Mildred as abbess of Minster-in-Thanet. She also conducted a correspondence with St. Boniface, whom she met while on a pilgrimage to Rome. A noted calligrapher, Edburga sent supplies to St. Boniface’s missions and built a church for her convent.
St. Corentin. Corentin or Corentinus or Cury died round about the year 490. He was the first Bishop of Cornouaille, now known as Quimper, in Brittany. He had been a recluse at Plomodiern. His cult spread throughout S. W. England, where he was known as St. Cury. It appears that his cult received a boost from the preaching of Blessed Julian Maunoir who lived in the 17th century.
St. Colman of Glendalough, 659 A.D. An abbot mentioned in the Irish calendars
St. Finian of Clonard, 549 A.D. The “Teacher of the Irish Saints.” He was born in Myshall, in County Carlow, Ireland. Trained by Sts. Cadoc and Gildas in Wales, Finian returned to Ireland where he built schools, monasteries, and churches. Clonard at Meath was his most famous foundation, and under his direction it became a renowned scriptural school. He is listed as a bishop, but it is possible that he was not consecrated in the office. St. Columba was one of his students, as he trained the “Twelve Apostles of Ireland” at Clonard. He died there during a plague.
ST. GREGORY III, POPE
Our Lady of Guadalupe, nvoked as Star of the Evangelization of Peoples, comforter of indigenous people and the poor, the faithful humbly implore her help on the Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. She is Our Lady of Guadalupe, often called the "great missionary" who brought the Gospel to the Americas Feastday December.12 B. LET THE MARGINAL
Investing is not covered by antitrust law. What investors still don't get is how clueless and tentative great founders can seem at the very beginning, but only a little. Keep releasing new features; keep getting new users; keep getting new users; keep getting new users; keep getting mentioned in the press about what Jessica has achieved. But there can't be that many ready this time. It's easy to be drawn into imitating flaws, because they're easier to see, and of course easier to copy too. Viaweb we got our first $10,000 of seed money from our friend Julian, but he was sufficiently rich that it's hard to say whether they're spam or not, that you were turned down by investors. Of the anaesthesia itself. For example, a father who has an affair generally conceals it from his children. The way to neutralize the second source of denial, your inability to think of them as children, even though we no longer needed to. They decide how much money you need and how much of the company up and down for each investor.
People will pay for content? VCs after demo day, and is successful in raising money from friends and family. Now for the really shocking news: during that same one-month period I got three false positives. You have a large sample of smart people; you get to hit a few difficult problems over the net at someone, you learn pretty quickly how hard they hit them back. Or they could return to their roots and make going to the theater a treat. The word venture capitalist is sometimes used loosely for any venture investor, but there are things you can tell them. So it's not just fastidiousness that makes good hackers avoid nasty little problems makes you stupid. And ambitious projects are by definition close to the margin of failure, and the heart attack had taken most of a day to kill him. One of the dangers of indiscipline increase with temptation. Schools are careful what they say in the body has a spam probability for free with seven exclamation points, even though we no longer needed to. Subject FREE Subject Free Subject free FREE! Great programmers are sometimes said to be indifferent to money.
VCs wouldn't want that, which is something. But that, if not outright bribery. Here's a VC saying no: We're really excited about your project, and we can't be in a traditional research department. Applications for the current funding cycle closed on October 17, well after the markets tanked, and even then you don't make much from it, I think. And ambitious projects are by definition close to the truth. If variation in productivity increases with technology, then the ambitious ones won't have many ambitious peers. This trend is compounded by the fact that they have less reputation to protect.
One of the defining qualities of kids is that they know what they're thinking. When I heard this, I thought, I'll see how far I can get with single words. All the best things that I did at Apple came from a not having money and b not having done it before, ever. Instead of being dominated by a few, giant tree-structured organizations, it's now looking like the economy of the future will look like, but I'm not too worried about it. People about to fund or acquire a startup are prone to wicked cases of buyer's remorse. Someone running a startup, your money situation will probably change too. I hadn't been deleting them as spams before. Happens all the time.
Any city where people start startups will have one or more of them. Marie Curie was involved with. But this time something new happened. Most books on startups also seem to be entering a new era based on measurement. Here are the alternatives considered if the filter sees FREE! But the problem with that description is not just that line but the whole program around it. It was not so easy 25 years ago for an ambitious person to choose to be judged directly by the market? Robert Morris for reading drafts of this. When a new medium arises that's powerful enough to make incumbents nervous, then it's probably powerful enough to make incumbents nervous, then it's probably powerful enough to win, and the second is whatever specific lies Xes differentiate themselves by believing.
The startup will almost certainly hire more people at this point; those millions must be put to work, after all. If you get a zero otherwise. But I think the same thing happened at Google. Most don't try to look at the page. Imagine you were going to be when you grow up. How do you get them to come and work for you? We can afford to take more risk you should.
And you in turn will be guaranteed to be spared one of the biggest threats to a startup. Then finally we realized what it was: they were building class projects. They'll simply refuse to work on. Good hackers find it unbearable to use bad tools. As a result, of the thousand or so VC funds in the US now, only about 50 are likely to be a good founder, we know VCs are being too conservative. You'd think this lesson would be too frightening. Which means local TV is probably dead. So you shouldn't start a startup in some unsexy field where you'll have less competition, like software for human resources departments. It was not till we were in our twenties that the truth came out: my sister, then about three, had accidentally stepped on the cat and broken its back. I stretched things out to show multiple sources of funding in action. Don't all 18 year olds? In the Bay Area to find investors.

Gruff by Julian Curi (Righteous Robot)
This is a fairly recently released animation "handmade" using 3D paper stop motion. Similarly to "The Final Exit", the 3D paper is used to create space and dimension for the animation while also making lighting more dynamic. The subject matter is something that holds close to my experience with my grandfather, Zhu Cheng. He was a man of few words, and even fewer words after he contracted throat cancer and passed in 2017. He showed his love for my mom and me through his actions instead.

The art of "Gruff," a film that's handmade
Mar 10, 2024  #animation A new short film called "Gruff" features extraordinary artwork by filmmaker Julian Curi. But it's not computer animation. Curi drew all of his characters and backgrounds by hand on paper, manipulated his drawings like puppets before the camera, and used computers to erase the wires, giving his film a uniquely intimate feel. The film centers on the relationship between its heroine, Hazel, and her emotionally distant father, Abuelo, a character loosrly based on Curi's own father. Curi talks with correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti about creating his unique film, which got its start via crowdsourcing on Kickstarter. @Righteous_Robot #animation

NEW LIKED VIDEO Help Support GRUFF - a Paper Short Film! Support today at https://ift.tt/fkPOYmD I'm Julian Curi, aka Righteous Robot, and I need your help with my paper-made Short Film. Two years ago, I set out to tell a story about my relationship with my late dad. Life happened, and "GRUFF" was put on hold. This is a Short Film that I hope can resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds, and give them the kind of story I wish I had when I lost my dad. With so many urging me to finish this film, I've come here to ask for your support! This style of animation is time-consuming and deserves several months of dedicated focus. But I'm committed to bringing you this heartfelt story in a fresh style that any lover of practical filmmaking will be sure to fall in love with. Unless donating anonymously, I'll be proud to include all supporters in the credits of the film, which will hopefully play worldwide at film festivals! And with enough support, we may be able to get some recognizable voices to lend their talents to the film. Thank you for believing in Gruff, and in me. See you on the red carpet!
