Embroidery Workshop
On Monday 17th April, we had an embroidery workshop with Ruth. It was a very enjoyable workshop and I learned many different embroidery stitches, (running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, chain stitch, etc.)
We first had to draw various motifs that could be incorporated into our designs. The embroidery patterns already on my garment reminded me of stars so I drew out various star motifs that I could make. (However, I didn’t end up using them in my final design)

Final Design

After considering all of my designs this is the one I decided to make.
It is a pretty basic design but I know that it’s something I will wear. That was my goal from the start- to upcyle the garments into something wearable for myself.

Based on my work on the stand, I created more designs, exploring the possibilities of having extra fabric to work with.

Artist Research- Moschino
Moschino is an Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1983 by Franco Moschino in Milan. The brand is known for its over-the-top campy designs.
I’m particularly fond of their Spring 2020 Ready-to-wear collection. This collection was dedicated to Picasso and his muses, and you can see the clear influence of cubism in these outfits.
This patchwork sort of style has always intrigued me and I wanted to use it in my own designs.

Artist Research - Bridget Riley
Bridget Riley is an English painter known for her optical illusion paintings.
Her art style changed constantly from semi-impressionist to pointillism to landscapes until 1960 when she evolved her style of exploring optical phenomena. Her paintings are certainly illusions and they produce a disorienting physical effect on the eye.
The phychadellic aesthetic of Groove is in the Heart reminded me of her work.

Fashion design inspiration
The dance for Groove is In the Heart was obviously heavily inspired by the original music video for the Deee-Lite song released in 1990. Many of the dance moves seen in the Just Dance choreography are taken from this music video.
I love the psychedelic patterns in the background and just the overall aesthetic of this music video.

Interdisciplinary Approach
This quick little stopmotion incorporates pieces from all of my 3 disciplines, and was a practise round for my actual stopmotion.
