Vatican City, Oct 28, 2024 / 12:55 pm
Ahead of the 2025 Jubilee, the Vatican has launched a cartoon mascot unveiled Monday as the cheerful face of the Catholic Church’s upcoming holy year.
The mascot, named Luce — which means “light” in Italian — is intended to engage a younger audience and guide visitors through the holy year.
Clad in a yellow raincoat, mud-stained boots, and a pilgrim’s cross, Luce’s mission is to guide young pilgrims toward hope and faith with her trusty dog Santino at her side. Shells glimmer in her eyes, recalling the scallop shell of the Camino de Santiago, an emblem of the pilgrimage journey.
Speaking at a Vatican press conference on Oct. 28 next to a plastic figurine of Luce, Fisichella described Luce’s shining eyes as “a symbol of the hope of the heart.”
Luce, he said, will also be the face of the Holy See’s pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, where she will represent the Vatican’s pavilion theme, “Beauty Brings Hope,” alongside Caravaggio’s “The Entombment of Christ,” a painting that will be temporarily on loan from the Vatican Museums for the expo.
Luce’s yellow sailor’s raincoat is a nod to both the Vatican flag and to journeying through life’s storms. The mascot’s muddy boots represent a long and difficult journey, while her staff symbolizes the pilgrimage toward eternity.
I'll do a fan art later.

Luce (mascot)
Luce (Italian: [ˈluːtʃe], lit. 'Light') is the official mascot of the 2025 Jubilee. Designed by tokidoki founder Simone Legno, she represents a Catholic pilgrim. Luce has a pet dog named Santino and friends named Fe, Xin, and Sky. The designs of Luce and her friends have been compared to anime characters.[1]
She has blue hair and wears a yellow rain jacket, which is colored in reference to the flag of the Vatican City as well as a symbol for "journeying through life's storms". She carries a pilgrim's staff, which represents "the pilgrimage toward eternity", and wears mud-stained boots to represent "a long and difficult journey". Her eyes have highlights in the shape of a scallop shell, a traditional symbol of Catholic pilgrimage; her shining eyes were described as "a symbol of the hope of the heart". She also wears a rosary. Simone Legno said that he hopes "Luce can represent the sentiments that resonate in the hearts of the younger generations".[2]
Luce was unveiled by Rino Fisichella on October 28, 2024. He said that Luce was inspired by the Catholic church's desire "to live even within the pop culture so beloved by our youth."[3] She is planned to represent the Vatican City at Lucca Comics & Games in 2024, which will be the first time that the Vatican officially participates in a comic convention.[2] Luce will also represent the Vatican City at Expo 2025 in Japan.[4]
Following Luce's unveiling, she quickly spawned Internet memes. Users on websites such as Twitter made jokes about the Catholic Church embracing anime visuals, and some drew comparisons between Luce's design and the design of Ai Ohto, the protagonist of Wonder Egg Priority.[5] However, her debut also sparked controversies among some Catholic groups due to designer's public support for LGBT, including Pride Month, and collaborations with a company producing sex toys.[6] Other, less-hinged criticisms call Luce Satanic because a possible name for Satan that appears once in the Vulgate - Lucifer - shares the same Latin root - lux, meaning "light" - as the mascot. 9 November 2024
For the first time in over a century, the historic Chair of St. Peter, a wooden throne symbolizing the pope’s magisterial authority, has been removed from its gilded bronze reliquary in St. Peter’s Basilica to be displayed for public veneration.
Pilgrims and visitors can now behold this storied relic directly in front of the basilica’s main altar, just above the tomb of St. Peter, where it will remain on display until December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
According to Pietro Zander, Head of the Necropolis and Artistic Heritage Section of the Vatican:
"The last major public viewing of the chair occurred in 1867, when Pope Pius IX exposed the Chair of Peter for the veneration of the faithful for 12 days on the 1,800th anniversary of the martyrdoms of St. Peter and St. Paul."
It was the first time that the centuries-old wooden throne had been exhibited to the public since 1666 when it was first encased within Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s monumental bronze sculpture under the stained-glass Dove of the Holy Spirit window at the basilica’s apse.
Formally known as the Cathedra Sancti Petri Apostoli, or more simply as Cathedra Petri, the chair has held a revered place in Catholic tradition over the centuries, representing papal authority from St. Peter to the present.
Tumblr media
“The chair is meant to be understood as the teacher’s ‘cathedra,’” art historian Elizabeth Lev told CNA.
“It symbolizes the pope’s duty to hand down the teaching of Christ from generation to generation.”
She explained:
“It’s antiquity [ninth century] speaks to a papacy that has endured through the ages — from St. Peter who governed a church on the run trying to evangelize with the might of the Roman Empire trying to shut him down, to the establishment of the Catholic Church and its setting down of roots in the Eternal City, to our 266th successor of St. Peter, Pope Francis.”
A Storied History
Tumblr media
The wooden chair itself is steeped in history.
According to the Vatican, the wooden seat was likely given by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald to Pope John VIII in A.D. 875 for the emperor’s Christmas coronation in the old St. Peter’s Basilica.
A depiction of the emperor appears on the crossbeam of the chair, and its ivory panels illustrate the labors of Hercules along with other scenes from Greek mythology.
The informational sign near the chair in St. Peter’s Basilica informs visitors that “shortly after the year 1000, the Cathedra Petri began to be venerated as a relic of the seat used by the apostle Peter when he preached the Gospel first in Antioch and then in Rome.”
The Fabric of St. Peter, the organization responsible for the basilica’s upkeep, maintains:
“It cannot be ruled out that this ninth-century imperial seat may have later incorporated the panel depicting the labors of Hercules, which perhaps originally belonged to an earlier and more ancient papal seat.”
Before returning the chair to its place within Bernini’s monumental reliquary, Vatican experts will conduct a series of diagnostic tests with the Vatican Museums’ Cabinet of Scientific Research.
The ancient seat was last removed and studied from 1969 to 1974 under Pope Paul VI but was not shown to the public.
The recent restoration of Bernini’s works in the basilica, funded by the Knights of Columbus in preparation for the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, made it possible for the chair to be moved from the bronze sculpture in August.
Pope Francis got a sneak peak of the relic in early October and a photo of the moment — showing him sitting in a wheelchair before the Chair of St. Peter — quickly went viral.
Afterward, the pope requested that the relic be displayed for public veneration.
Tumblr media
Francis ultimately decided that the Chair of St. Peter — a symbol of the Church’s unity under the instruction of Christ — would be unveiled for the public at the closing Mass for the Synod on Synodality.
“Pope Francis has been exceptionally generous to the faithful about displaying relics,” Lev said.
“He brought out the bones of St. Peter shortly after his election, he had the Shroud of Turin on view in 2015, and now he has taken the Chair of Peter out for veneration in the basilica.”
“In our virtual age, where much confusion reigns between what is real and what is not, Pope Francis has encouraged us to come face to face with these ancient witnesses of our faith and our traditions.”
Feast of the Chair of St. Peter
Tumblr media
The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, celebrated each year on February 22, dates back to the fourth century.
St. Jerome (A.D. 347–420) spoke of his respect for the “Chair of Peter,” writing in a letter:
“I follow no leader save Christ, so I enter into communion with … the Chair of Peter, for this I know is the rock upon which the Church is built.”
As Pope Benedict XVI explained in a 2006 catechesis:
“‘Cathedra’ literally means the established seat of the bishop, placed in the mother church of a diocese, which for this reason is known as a ‘cathedral.”
“It is the symbol of the bishop’s authority and in particular, of his ‘magisterium,’ that is, the evangelical teaching which, as a successor of the apostles, he is called to safeguard and to transmit to the Christian community,” he said.
When a bishop takes possession of the particular Church that has been entrusted to him, he sits on the cathedra, Benedict explained:
“From this seat, as teacher and pastor, he will guide the journey of the faithful in faith, hope, and charity.”
“The Church’s first ‘seat’ was the upper room, and it is likely that a special place was reserved for Simon Peter in that room where Mary, mother of Jesus, also prayed with the disciples,” he added.
Benedict XVI described Peter’s ministry as a journey from Jerusalem to Antioch, where he served as bishop, and ultimately to Rome.
He noted that the See of Rome, where Peter ultimately “ended his race at the service of the Gospel with martyrdom,” became recognized as the seat of his successors, with the cathedra representing the mission entrusted to Peter by Christ.
“So it is that the See of Rome, which had received the greatest of honors, also has the honor that Christ entrusted to Peter of being at the service of all the particular Churches for the edification and unity of the entire people of God,” he said.
Bernini’s Baroque Masterpiece
Tumblr media
Bernini’s monumental reliquary for the chair, commissioned by Pope Alexander VII and completed in 1666, is one of the most iconic artworks in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Bernini encased the wooden relic within a bronze-gilded throne, dramatically raised and crowned by a stained-glass depiction of the Holy Spirit, symbolized as a dove, surrounded by sculpted angels.
The bronze throne is supported by massive statues of four doctors of the Church — two from the West, St. Augustine and St. Ambrose, and two from the East, St. John Chrysostom and St. Athanasius.
It is symbolizing the unity of the Church through the ages, bringing together the teachings of both the Latin and Greek Church Fathers.
And at the top of the throne, cherubs hold up a papal tiara and keys symbolizing papal authority.
On the chair itself, there are three gold bas-reliefs representing the Gospel episodes: "consignment of the keys" (Matthew 16:19), “feed my sheep” (John 21:17), and the "washing of the feet" (John 13:1-17).
The ongoing restoration of Bernini’s monument at the Altar of the Chair, along with the recently finished restoration of the baldacchino, is significant not only in light of the 2025 Jubilee Year but also the upcoming 400th anniversary of the Consecration of the Current St. Peter’s Basilica in 2026.
Benedict XVI said:
“Celebrating the ‘Chair’ of Peter means attributing a strong spiritual significance to it and recognizing it as a privileged sign of the love of God, the eternal Good Shepherd, who wanted to gather his whole Church and lead her on the path of salvation.”

Late fanart I planned to do in October but because I was sick (... AGAIN), I was unmotivated. But anyways here's Miraitowa and Someity (Tokyo 2020) as well as Xin and Luce (Jubilee 2025)!!! The perfect mascot quartet because the artstyle are very similar-
What also made me really like Luce was when I found out that it was Simone Legno who created Tokidoki who designed her! And also is a "Christian mascot" because I am Christian myself- All of them are cute, though!
And also a resharing of my OTHER Tokidoki fanart I made of Cactus Rocker back in early 2024!

The America article above celebrates the veneration of St. Thomas Aquinas’ skull and relics that came to Washington DC on November 29. In it Father James Brent, assistant professor of philosophy at the Dominican House of Studies, said “an exceptional way” to gain wisdom and understanding “is to pray for it in the presence of the skull of St. Thomas Aquinas.” Fr. Gregory Pine, OP offered this quote for the event at St. Dominic’s church which included a Mass, veneration, and solemn prayer:
In a time of renewed interest in the teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas, the jubilees of his canonization (700 years in 2023), death (750 years in 2024), and birth (800 years in 2025) draw our attention to the masterwork of wisdom and sanctity which God wrought in him. The opportunity that we have to receive and venerate his relics makes this grace all the more proximate and precious to us.
I went to the 12:15pm mass at St. Dominic’s church where Archbishop Wilton Gregory presided and preached at. The gospel reading from John was where Jesus invites his disciples to recognize the love that God has for them through his own witness and invites them to ask for gifts from him. The archbishop preached on the practice of venerating relics and how Aquinas’ relic is a great spiritual gift for us and draws us closer to God and the wisdom and knowledge of God.
The veneration itself was a powerful act of spiritual devotion where many people prayed for personal and social intercessions from this great saint. For my part I prayed for the personal gifts of wisdom, knowledge, justice, and charity. In our society I prayed for our nation and especially for our immigrant community. I asked also for the wisdom and courage for us who are willing to transform our broken political system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is the prayer that was passed out during the veneration.
O God, who poured forth the waters of wisdom upon your Church through the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, grant us, through the veneration of his relics, an increase share in that same holy wisdom and divine charity that inflamed it. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blending Aristotelian philosophy with Scripture and Patristic theology St. Thomas developed a form of natural theology - the belief that people can experience God’s existence through reason and experience, rather than any special revelation - which made his concepts very accessible to all people. Thomas helped further develop the idea of natural law and rights which would have such a profound impact on western civilization. His contributions also included the notion of how we can come to understand God and the purpose of our existence, how the virtues inform who we are and how society can be organized towards the ideals of justice and charity. We are indebted to him for the philosophical underpinnings of our society.
The Dominicans have established this amazing way of learning about Thomistic theology and spirituality called Aquinas 101. It is a great site with videos on all things Thomistic.
youtube
As i share this focus on the great saint and theologian I also want to share on the mysterious end of his extensive writing. This has troubled me for some time now. The following article shares some insights on the interesting event.
It is troubling to think of what happened on December 6, 1273 when he stopped writing after going to Mass that day. Many assume that he suffered a stroke that left him incapable of finishing his masterpiece. As the author of the above article tells us:
For his part, Thomas’s explanation of the silence was not physiological but spiritual. As often happened, he entered an ecstasy during Mass. Earlier in the year, on Passion Sunday, while he was celebrating Mass before many witnesses, the experience lasted so long that brothers had to intervene so that Mass could be finished. On this day, the feast of St. Nicholas, Thomas celebrated Mass as usual in the chapel of St. Nicholas in San Domenico Church in Naples. When Thomas’s friend and secretary Reginald brought him back to his senses, he was transformed.
The natural explanation would be that something happened to incapacitate his continued writing, a stroke perhaps. But it is curious to discover that St. Thomas Aquinas communicated this event as a spiritual experience that ended his writing career. It does offer the possibility that in experiencing the diving itself one may be left bereft of expressing this. As his attempt was to create a definitive theological summery he felt that mystery itself cannot have a conclusion thus leaving it open for others to expand on or delve into.
Even so, what he has left western civilization is an amazing work which has been the basis of ongoing work for theologians/philosophers/social scientist.

16 April 2024: King Abdullah II said Jordan’s security and sovereignty are above all considerations, stressing that the protection of Jordanians comes above all else.
Commenting on recent regional developments during a meeting with local community leaders and figures in Mafraq Governorate, His Majesty reiterated that Jordan will not be a battlefield for any party.
At the meeting, held at the Hijaz Railway’s Mafraq Station and attended by Crown Prince Hussein, the King expressed pride in fellow brothers in arms, noting that military retirees support the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army and security personnel in defending the nation and safeguarding its future.
His Majesty highlighted the historical value of Mafraq city, as well as its strategic location on international routes.
The King said at the meeting, held as part of ongoing outreach visits to mark the Silver Jubilee, that Mafraq residents have capitalised on the important location of the governorate, turning it into a meeting point for everyone.
His Majesty noted the variety of agricultural produce in Mafraq, stressing the importance of investments in industry and renewable energy in the governorate, which has further potential for development in various fields.
The King said Mafraq was largely affected by the refugee crisis, reaffirming his trust that Jordanians can transform challenges into opportunities.
For his part, Mafraq Governor Salman Najada stressed Jordanians’ support for His Majesty’s leadership, and their pride in army and security personnel, who protect the homeland, congratulating His Majesty on the Silver Jubilee and highlighting achievements in Mafraq over the past 25 years.
He praised the King’s wisdom in dealing with regional crises, as well as his support for the Palestinians, especially in Gaza.
Earlier, upon arrival in Mafraq, His Majesty inaugurated BIA Textile Company, an investment valued at $149 million, at the King Hussein bin Talal Development Zone.
The King was briefed by the company’s owner, Sanal Kumar, on the project, which is a subsidiary of Classic Fashion Apparel Industry, the largest textile company in Jordan and the Middle East.
Kumar said the company seeks to create job opportunities for the local community and support economic growth in Jordan, in line with the Economic Modernisation Vision.
BIA Textile Company, in its current first stage, employs 320 employees, including 120 Jordanians, and is expected to employ 850 additional personnel, including 300 Jordanians, in its second phase, which concludes by the end of 2025.
Upon arrival at the Hijaz Railway’s Mafraq Station prior to the outreach meeting, the King was received by Mafraq Band for Popular Arts, and Samer Revival band, in addition to a poetry recital.
During the meeting, His Majesty bestowed the Silver Jubilee Medal on individuals and institutions in Mafraq, in recognition of their contributions to serving Jordan, especially the local community in the governorate.
Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and Adviser to His Majesty for Tribal Affairs Kneiaan Bluwi attended the meeting.
