How to Prevent Knee and Joint Pain: Tips from Joint Replacement Surgeon for Maintaining Healthy Joints
Tumblr media
Joint pain, especially in the knees, can significantly impact our daily lives and limit our mobility. However, with the right preventive measures, you can take proactive steps to maintain healthy joints and reduce the risk of knee and joint pain. In this informative blog, we will discuss some practical tips that can help keep your joints in optimal condition and minimize the need for surgical intervention. As the Best Orthopaedic hospital in Surat, specializing in knee and joint replacement surgeries, we, at Param Superspeciality Hospital, are dedicated to promoting joint health and overall well-being.
1. Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Excess weight can put strain on the joints, particularly the knees. By maintaining a healthy weight, you can reduce the load on your joints and minimize the risk of developing knee and joint pain. Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, and engage in regular physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
2. Engage in Regular Exercise:
Regular exercise is essential for maintaining joint health and preventing knee and joint pain. Low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, and cycling, help strengthen the muscles around the joints, improve flexibility, and promote joint stability. Consult with a healthcare professional or a qualified physical therapist to develop an exercise routine that suits your fitness level and joint condition.
3. Practice Proper Posture and Body Mechanics:
Maintaining proper posture and body mechanics during daily activities can significantly reduce stress on the joints. When standing, ensure that your weight is evenly distributed on both feet, and avoid locking your knees. When lifting heavy objects, use your legs instead of your back, and avoid twisting motions that can strain the joints. By practicing good posture and body mechanics, you can protect your joints from unnecessary wear and tear.
4. Protect Your Joints during Physical Activity:
As the best knee replacement hospital in Surat, we offer comprehensive diagnostic services and treatment options to address joint pain and provide personalized care.
Engaging in sports or high-impact activities can put strain on the joints and increase the risk of injury. To protect your joints, wear appropriate protective gear, such as knee pads or supportive braces, when participating in activities that involve repetitive movements or potential impact. It is also essential to warm up before exercising and cool down afterward to prepare your joints and prevent injuries.
5. Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing:
Prolonged periods of sitting or standing can contribute to joint stiffness and discomfort. If you have a desk job or a profession that requires long hours of standing, take regular breaks to stretch your legs and move around. Incorporate simple exercises, such as walking or gentle stretching, into your routine to keep your joints mobile and prevent stiffness.
6. Pay Attention to Footwear:
Wearing appropriate footwear plays a crucial role in maintaining joint health. Choose shoes that provide proper support, cushioning, and stability. Avoid high heels or shoes with inadequate arch support, as they can put excessive strain on the knees and contribute to joint pain. Consult with a podiatrist or orthopaedic specialist to find the right footwear for your specific needs.
7. Listen to Your Body:
It is important to listen to your body and pay attention to any signs of joint discomfort or pain. If you experience persistent or worsening knee or joint pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention from one the best joint replacement hospitals in Surat.
8. Hormonal Changes and Joint Health:
Women experience hormonal changes throughout their lives, such as during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, which can impact joint health. During these times, women may be more susceptible to joint pain and inflammation. It is essential for women to be aware of these changes and take extra care of their joints during these phases. Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and practicing good posture can help support joint health during hormonal fluctuations. Consulting with a healthcare professional can provide further guidance on managing joint health during different stages of a woman’s life.
Maintaining healthy joints is crucial for overall mobility and quality of life. By adopting these preventive measures and incorporating them into your lifestyle, you can reduce the risk of knee and joint pain and preserve joint health. However, if you experience persistent joint pain or have a pre-existing condition that affects your joint function, consult with the best joint surgery hospital in Surat for a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan. Remember, early intervention and proactive joint care are key to preventing and managing knee and joint pain effectively.

[TW: joint dislocation/surgery talk]
Well, I wanted to have one more big finished piece for you, but I think my high expectations have gotten in my way, and now I'm out of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This whole Boromir kick started after I dislocated my shoulder for the fourth time back in June, and it was a bad one. My summer of swimming, hiking, and camping with my kids was taken over by wearing a sling, orthopedic referrals, MRIs, and ultimately, the reality that my cartilage is torn and is not going to heal. This Friday I'll be undergoing surgery for it, and I'll be in a bolster sling for weeks afterward. I should be able to type during that time, but I won't be able to draw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not sure why Boromir snuck up on me this summer, as I sat wearily sketching under an ice pack, trying to keep my arm loose, but it's been a blast. I had no idea that drawing a half-baked comic culminating with a feral raccoon becoming High Warden of Gondor would kick off such an all-encompassing dive back into LotR. I'm really grateful for all the follows, shares, interactions, and lovely comments from the Tolkien community---it really kept my spirits up and fueled a ton of inspiration. I can't remember the last time my art folder was so hyperfocused on a specific character.
Tumblr media
Anyway, TLDR, I'll be quiet here for a while. Don't trust anything I might post for about forty-eight hours starting 8/18; general anesthesia makes me extremely stupid. I can only hope this surgery will fix things and I can go back to drawing niche comics and emotional thirst traps.
And send me your fics; not being able to draw is going to drive me OUT OF MY MIND.

It is interesting how much math comes into even the most basic of like. Making things. Making almost anything. And often not numbers necessarily but proportions and geometry. I think all the time about how castles were built with geometry at the heart of it. And I use the same kind of proportional math to make socks fit. And none of my pieces are ever knit with a prime number of stitches--because you use factors to make neat colorwork and ribbing and different stitches. Idk ! I remember constantly thinking 'how the hell is THIS gonna come in useful ?' But it always does. Math is at the heart of everything, and knowing how to apply it is a tool of critical importance to Thinking Up A Shape And Making It.

soooo turns out i have condylar resorption, a severe degenerative joint disease that causes gradual bone loss of the mandibular condyles (the bones that are part of the jaw joints, aka the TMJs). this has probably been going on i was a kid but went diagnosed all this time. my symptoms like functional issues, pain, etc. were repeatedly dismissed by doctors my whole life. the pain and dysfunction is increasing more and more by the day.
it's a progressive disease, and nothing can stop it or slow it down until the joints are completely eaten away. the only solution to prevent further bone loss and restore function is a total temporomandibular joint replacement, where the two diseased joints that literally hold my face together are removed and permanently replaced with metal prostheses. aka a major surgery with a 6-12 month recovery 😃

thinking about how with becoming disabled, your threshold of what is normal slowly changes, so slowly that you don't notice. I'm currently laying in bed debating whether I need to suck it up, get up, and go do something because it's really not that bad, or if I should go to sleep early because my legs hurt and my shoulders ache and I'm fucking tired even though I've only been awake 9 hours. then I remember that if I had felt this shitty even just a couple yrs ago, I would've assumed I'd caught something and would have allowed myself to take the rest I needed, to lay down, close my eyes, and put on an audiobook. I think about how this, the curling up in bed and listening to an audibook, is a luxury that only able bodied people with appropriate sick leave can afford when they've got the flu. not something that most disabled people can afford to do every day, even though they need the rest.
