John W. Mulligan and Charles Adams.
Would you believe me if I told you Hercules Mulligan's son and John Adam’s son were lovers? Well, maybe you would think it's a made-up story to satisfy the gay-historic-thirst of the Hamilton musical fans, but I assure you, it was a real story.
Charles Adams was the younger brother of John Quincy Adams, who was very noticeably the favorite child. He grew up with the same education as his brother, and there was not much difference between them until, at his return from school in London, Charles got a job working at Alexander Hamilton’s law firm. There, he met another young man his age, whose father was an old acquaintance of Hamilton’s: John W. Mulligan, Hercules Mulligan's son. We don't know when their relationship started, but soon after, they moved in together. They were, at this time, handsome and wealthy men in age to marry, but neither did so. Both seemed to enjoy the company of the other best.
It was, more or less, a year after they moved in together, when John Adams visited his son. His brother John Quincy was thriving in the world of politics, and the man wanted an update on how Charles was doing at Hamilton's law firm. By visiting their home, Adams quickly realized Charles and John’s relationship transcended friendship, and this horrorized him. How could his son give in to the sin of Sodom? Even though Thomas Jefferson had changed the penalty for it from death by hanging to castration in 1776, the risk of getting caught and ruining his reputation was too high, and so Adams tried to force Charles to break up with John.
But the two young men loved each other too much to simply give in to his orders. This is when John ran to Hamilton, asking him for help, confiding in his father's old friend. As a side note, this is another proof of Hamilton's bisexuality being known between his inner circle: why would John trust him with his own homosexuality if he thought Alexander wouldn't be supportive? Theorizing, Alexander probably told his first friend in the Colonies about his ‘proclivities not limited to the fairer sex’, in his own nephew’s words, which would mean Hercules knew about John's relationship with Charles, probably being the one to advice him to ask for help from Hamilton.
Alexander understood their problem. He probably saw himself and Laurens in them, and so he wrote to Baron von Sugar Daddy—I mean, Baron von Steuben—about John and Charles’ problem. Now, a bit about Baron von Steuben before continuing with the story—Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was an openly homosexual man who was exiled from Prussia for it. In the Colonies, he rapidly joined the army and ascended to General. Washington didn't seem to care about the Baron’s past in Europe, letting him have his own military facility where he did a number of very gay things. Two should be highlighted: first one, the party he held with his aides where pants were not allowed, and the second is his three closest soldiers: his personal assistant, Pierre Stephen du Ponceau (though this one gives me a bitter feeling, as Pierre was only 17), William North and Benjamin Walker, who were his lovers and formally adopted (the homosexual replacement for marriage in the 18th century) to be in his will at his death later. Now, carrying on, von Steuben was a protector of homosexual men of the time: by sending Charles and John away to him, Alexander was shielding them from Adams and giving a safe space to be open about their relationship.
This is how they moved in with von Steuben, with whom they stayed for a happy year, being together. However, after this year passed, the Baron wanted to move upstate: while John desired to become his personal assistant and move with him, Charles desperately wanted to stay in the city. They parted ways, though this wasn't the end of their relationship: Charles got married and had two daughters, and he often left them at home while being off visiting his lover at von Steuben’s. It was on a day when Adams decided to show up uninvited to their home and he found his daughter-in-law and granddaughters alone. When questioning them for his son’s location, he was incredibly mad. Everybody knew the Baron was gay, and this only confirmed his suspicions. We have a register of the colorful vocabulary he used to refer to his son to Abigail, highlighting the following: “rake” (meaning the equivalent to manwhore) and “buck”, which meant an effeminate man. After this, he properly disowned Charles.
Charles died young of a liver infection probably caused by a genetic condition, or perhaps, alcoholism. John outlived him and von Steuben, being present on his will.
They were, indeed, very gay.

you know the first problem w the musical was the revolutionary set. the four friends close in age and hamilton's the newcomer. it made the plot easier ok but it did horrors for the characterization of these four people. mulligan was older and hamilton knew him first and he prob never interacted with the other two during the war bc he was a SPY IN BRITISH NEW YORK CITY and by the time Ham meets Laurens and Lafayette the continental army was long gone from New York. so then hamilton meets lafayette on washington's staff and THEN laurens comes into the picture and the latter three are the gay trio. newcomer hamilton haunts me. thats why he was always a dirty looking (why? just why) bummy nerd who's taken in by a cool (?) group of friends and it has made me. sooo mad. also laurens' actor being (a decade) younger than hamilton's? HORRIBLE FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION. horrible for the fandom. it is NOT LMM's fault but do you know what happened to Laurens bc of it? bruh they put that man in a dress. they made him. they. they. it physically repulses me to say this but they made him uwu. idk what yall were reading in like 2017-18 but i was there and i look like the shell shock meme every time i see drawings of anthony ramos as John Laurens and it is NOT his fault it is not LMM's fault but truly I am traumatized. i feel afraid in my chest when i think about it. i think i'd rather relive the Undertale fandom if i'm being fuckinf honest. bring back the weird Sans multiverse bring back the glowing boners bc i want John Laurens drawn in a red dress as Maria Reynolds GONE from my memory. thanks for coming to my ted talk

Remember those great made-for-TV horror movies from the 1970s? You know the ones. They had familiar stars, and some were very, very good films like The Night Stalker (1974) and Salem’s Lot (1979). In this episode, the 70s Grue Crew returns to that well with Snowbeast (1977). Familiar stars? Bo Svenson, Yvette Mimieux, Robert Logan, Clint Walker, and Sylvia Sidney. Check. A very, very good film? Not so much. According to Bill, Snowbeast should be known as No Beast for its skimpy reveal of the title character. But there is that beautiful skiing footage. Oh well. Someone out there loves Snowbeast. Now, if we could just find them.
At the time of this writing, Snowbeast (1977 is available to stream from Amazon Prime, Tubi, Crackle, Plex, and Freevee.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Colussus: The Forbin Project (1970), a science fiction thriller about a computer takeover. Wait. Is it science fiction if it’s already happening?

Notes: Decent 4k capture of the touring production.  Some very rough filming at times, with some blind-wideshots and a few blackouts due to usher activity, but also has some really gorgeous close-ups.  Struggles with washout at times, some minor obstruction from heads particularly on either extreme side of the stage, and has some major obstruction from a head during Act 2.  Filming is much more settled during Act 2.  Has some nice covers on.  Jared’s, Bella’s, and Devin’s final show with the company.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
highlights of April & May
1. Favourite movies: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Mildred Pierce (1945) 2. Decent movies I liked / appreciated but not loved: Pat and Mike (1952), Emma. (2020), Suzume no Tojimari (2022), Bullets or Ballots (1936) 3. wtf movie/ending: Rebecca (2020). The movie is so lifeless that even gorgeous locations don't save it. It looks more like a tourist advertising. As far as the ending is concerned, leaving it vague makes the movie feel even more pointless and empty than it already was. 4. Best scenes: the ending / the police station argument in Pat and Mike (1952); 'If I loved you less...; from Emma. (2020); Katharine getting her comeuppance in Working Girl (1988); stealing a corpse from the hospital in Nine to Five (1980); the opening from Mildred Pierce (1945); the courtroom scene in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). 5. Favourite genres: drama, fantasy, comedy, romance. 6. Favourite directors: George Cukor (Pat and Mike, 1952); Makoto Shinkai  (Suzume no Tojimari, 2022); Michael Curtiz (Mildred Pierce, 1945); Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). 7. Favourite actors: Deanna Durbin, Herbert Marshall (Mad About Music, 1938); Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn (Pat and Mike, 1952); Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn (Emma., 2020);  Melanie Griffith Harrison Ford Sigourney Weaver Joan Cusack (Working Girl, 1988);  Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton (Nine to Five, 1980);  Keanu Reeves Ian McShane (John Wick: Chapter 4, 2023); Roger Livesey (I Know Where I'm Going!, 1945); Joan Crawford Ann Blyth (Mildred Pierce, 1945); Edward G. Robinson, Joan Blondell (Bullets or Ballots, 1936); Gregory Peck Brock Peters Mary Badham (To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962); Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak (The Man with the Golden Arm, 1955); Bette Davis (A Stolen Life, 1946). 8. Least favourite performances: Armie Hammer in Rebecca (2020). Not only is it a terrible performance when compared to a master class that was Laurence Olivier, but even in its own right this performance is truly horrendous. It lacks all possible nuance that Maxim's character needs and is overall more a caricature than one of my favourite characters in movie history. 9. The most wasted cast: Lily and Kristin Scott Thomas in Rebecca (2020). I do believe they are capable of giving great performances, but not in this film. It's like a void sucking the talent of otherwise good actors. Also, I don't understant why make Cruella (2021) at all. The actors are fine and all but the entire film is just... wrong. This character is not Cruella, this is not her backstory, it's someone's fanfic. Nothing in the plot makes a lick of sense. Emma Stone, Emma, Joel Fry, Mark Strong. 10. The best wasted premise: Rebecca (2020). A gothic mystery romance. Sign me up... most of the time. You have to try to stuff it up. They managed. 11. Best premise: Suzume no Tojimari (2022). Crazy and brilliant. 12. Favourite cast: Pat and Mike (1952), I guess. I just really love seeing Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy together on screen again. They light up every scene they are in. 13. Favourite on-screen duos: Herbert Marshall x Deanna Durbin in Mad About Music (1938); Katharine Hepburn x Spencer Tracy in Pat and Mike (1952); Anya Taylor-Joy x Johnny Flynn in Emma. (2020); Melanie Griffith x Harrison Ford in Working Girl (1988); Jane Fonda x Lily Tomlin x Dolly Parton in Nine to Five (1980); Keanu Reeves x Donnie Yen in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023); Sadie Sink x Dylan O'Brien in All Too Well: The Short Film (2021); Joan Crawford x Ann Blyth in Mildred Pierce (1945); Edward G. Robinson x Joan Blondell and Edward G. Robinson x Humphrey Bogart in Bullets or Ballots (1936); Gregory Peck x Mary Badham and Phillip Alford in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962); Frank Sinatra x Kim Novak in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955). 14. Favourite on-screen relationships: Pat Pemberton + Mike Conovan (Pat and Mike, 1952); Emma Woodhouse + George Knightley (Emma., 2020). 15. Favourite characters: for the first time since I've started writing these I know exactly who the best character is. Possibly the best character of the entire year. Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). I adore this man for his reserve, conviction, strength, love, patience, compassion. He is the most inspirational character I can think of. Gloria Harkinson, Richard Todd / "Mr. Harkinson" (Mad About Music, 1938); Pat Pemberton, Mike Conovan (Pat and Mike, 1952);  Emma Woodhouse, George Knightley (Emma., 2020); Suzume Iwato (Suzume no Tojimari, 2022); Bruce Wayne / Batman (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, 1993); Doralee Rhodes (Nine to Five, 1980); Caine (John Wick: Chapter 4, 2023); Roger Livesey (I Know Where I'm Going!, 1945); Mildred Pierce, Veda Pierce Forrester (Mildred Pierce, 1945); Detective Johnny Blake (Bullets or Ballots, 1936); Atticus Finch, Scout, Jem (To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962). 15. Favourite quote: You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. (To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962). 16. Favourite fact discovered in 2023: I have a couple. Gregory Peck and Mary Badham formed a life-long friendship on the set of To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Harper Lee and Truman Capote's real-life friendship was also depicted in the film. 17. The most overrated film: like half of them? Rebecca (2020) is terrible; Working Girl (1988) is a bit cringe; Nine to Five (1980) is ALL cringe; John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) is okay but not a masterpiece; I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) has the most annoying protagonist; Highlander (1986) is a bit meh. I'll go with Cruella (2021) because it has no right to even exist. 18. The most disappointing film: Rebecca (2020). 19. The biggest surprise: Gregory Peck and the entire To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). An introspective character study. Truly deep and meeningful, masterfully written, diracted and acted. What do they say? They don't make them like they used to? Indeed they don't. 20. Best cinematography: The absolute best one is Ernest Haller for Mildred Pierce (1945). Cinematography in that film is breathtaking. It's one of the best-looking noirs I've ever seen and that is saying something as I've seen about a hundred of them. Honourable mentions go to Erwin Hillier (I Know Where I'm Going!, 1945); Russell Harlan (To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962). 21. Best set design: George James Hopkins (Mildred Pierce, 1945). 22. Best costume design: Mildred Pierce and Working Girl (1988). 23. Best music: Nine to Five (1980) just because the song is an absolute smash hit! I have had it on repeat for years. 24. Best prooduction choice: cinematography, costumes and casting in Mildred Pierce (1945). Joan Crawford is a knockout! Also, everything about To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). 25. Worst production choice: making Rebecca (2020). Who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to remake a Hitchcock classic? Was 1998's Psycho not enough? But also, they made it in the brightest possible colours. It's supposed to be a dark mystery almost horror and it looks like a Taylor Swift music video. Moreover, the costumes are truly baffling. They don't look 1930s at all and paired with rainbow colours all the style of the story or the 1940's adaptation is gone. Just by looking at it, you'd confuse it for a modern melodrama. I can't leave it at one. The whole existance of Cruella (2021) annoys me. Such a pretentious and irritating film! The obnoxious costume design is one of those notoriously bad production choices. 26. Film of the month: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). There isn't a single doubt in my mind.Mildred Pierce (1945) is a close second, also quite a gem of a film.

pasting this here from discord 🐉 (Hamilton hcs)
well the beginning is Lauriver but everything else is misc
ALWAYS AT ONE ANOTHER'S HIP
even when Max was around, whenever John was around Oliver was always w him somehow
I feel like they were both equally clingy—like touching one another somehow (like John always slinging his arm around Oliver and Alexander's shoulders and Oliver holding onto his arms or hands)
they accidentally fell asleep together once and Oliver was the big spoon and it stuck ever since
they didn't tell each other they were gay until Hamiliza's wedding because they thought it'd mess up their friendship because yk law and stuff it wasn't accepted at ALL back then
they didn't even tell each other about their crushes
I'd like to think they both join Angelica somehow during the toasts
they were Lafayette and Hercules kids™ I don't make the rules
if one did something then chances were that the other one followed along with
Oliver was pretty upset when she found out about the duel with Lee and it made John sad bc she was upset with him :(
whenever they drink, Oliver makes sure to stay completely sober for John's sake (and Lafayette and Hercules too if they're there. she doesn't care much for Alexander)
I'd like to imagine in the "You and I, do or die" part of "My Shot," John has his arms around both Hamilton and Oliver, but is looking mainly at Oliver during the "do or die" part
he def drags her everywhere, even when they were kids; during "Winter's Ball," if he was going somewhere, Oliver would be dragged behind him
going back to being Lafayette and Mulligan's kids, Lafayette definitely both knew they were gay and made sure they weren't questioned when they left the Wedding Ball for Alexander & Eliza, because he already knew what was up
Laurens house is Oliver's, as he's told her, and vice versa
they probably both have a key to each other's house theyre BESTIES besties
besties as in ppl assume they're together and they have to either awkwardly deny (mlm & wlw supremacy) or just "no we're just friends"
headcanon that ever since she was little she would call John "mein zukünftiger Ehemann" (My future husband according to my translator) as a little joke, never told John what it meant tho. and during the war, just in case, she would always call him that too but was always confused whenever she started to feel different the more she said it
im just gonna screenshot everything else.

i was not copying and pasting all of that

Dead Wrong About Everything
A new report titled “COVID Lessons Learned: A Retrospective After Four Years” was just published. The authors are Scott W. Atlas, Steve H. Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins, Philip G. Kerpen, and Casey B. Mulligan, professor of economics at the University of Chicago.
The report cites a 2021 Danish study titled “Emergencies: on the misuse of government powers,” which concluded the following:
“We find that the more advantages emergency constitutions confer to the executive, the higher the number of people killed as a consequence of a natural disaster, controlling for its severity. As this is an unexpected result, we discuss a number of potential explanations, the most plausible being that governments use natural disasters as a pretext to enhance their power. Furthermore, the easier it is to call a state of emergency, the larger the negative effects on basic human rights. Interestingly, presidential democracies are better able to cope with natural disasters than parliamentary ones in terms of lives saved, whereas autocracies do significantly worse in the sense that empowerment rights seriously suffer in the aftermath of a disaster.”
I am not surprised by the findings of the Danish authors. With few exceptions, politicians seek office not because they possess any particular understanding or competency, but because they enjoy receiving public attention and possessing power. Giving such people enhanced power will always result in enhanced bungling with innumerable negative, unintended consequences.
Four years ago, while watching New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti exercise emergency power over their jurisdictions, I was reminded of this speech by the newly minted dictator in Woody Allen’s film “Bananas.” Though satirical and hyperbolic, the scene nevertheless expresses a profound truth about human nature.

I was talking about shift in tone between early and later seasons of MASH and I wondered if it was because of the writers own experiences. So I made a list of every writer who wrote 2 or more episodes of MASH then did my best to find out who had served in the military. The results did not exactly confirm the hypothesis, but I thought they were interesting.

Just Before Dawn (1981) – directed by Jeff Lieberman (Squirm, 1977; Blue Sunshine, 1977; Satan’s Little Helper, 1995) and starring George Kennedy, Deborah Benson, Chris Lemmon, and Gregg Henry – features yet another hulking, machete-wielding psychopath jumping onto the big screen to slice and dice their way through a group of hikers in the wild woods of Oregon, USA. Is it an underappreciated gem or deserving of its status as a “lesser known” in the 80s slasher canon? The Grue Crew has something to say on that subject.
At the time of this writing, Just Before Dawn is available to stream from Wicked Horror TV.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Bill, will be Santa Sangre (1989), by director Alejandro Jodorowsky and producer Claudio Argento. As the tagline proclaims, forget everything you have ever seen!
