1x02 Diefenbaker’s Day Off | Score
One of the most charming parts of early due South is how much the score shines. It's my favourite TV score ever, and it really acts as another important character especially in the first season.
This hit especially is so good! The call-and-response on the twelve-string! The dichotomy between the pared-down score (just a woodwind, guitar, and percussion!) and the chaos inherent in the establishing shots of Chicago! The parallelism in how Fraser is a simple-livin' kind of guy out of place in this bustling metropolis and neither of them really fit together!!
It's so good. 3J, you're iconic for this score forever.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 19, 2023 Media Contact: Matt Ankenbrandt Sports Information Director │ Small College Basketball 616.780.1335 www.smallcollegebasketball.com
SCB Partners With Exhibit Associates for Tribute to Small College Basketball
Kansas City, MO – Small College Basketball is extremely excited to announce a partnership with Exhibit Associates to build and complete the Tribute to Small College Basketball at Hy-Vee Arena.
The Tribute to Small College Basketball will be a unique, first-of-a-kind physical structure that will use advanced technology to pay tribute to – and preserve the history of – the game of basketball at the small college levels. John McCarthy, Founder of Small College Basketball, had this to say regarding the partnership with Exhibit Associates: “It is such a thrill to bring the vision of the Tribute to Small College Basketball to reality,” stated McCarthy. “Through the use of video, light projection, sound domes, graphics and physical pieces, we’ll tell the history and stories of our great game of basketball at the small college levels. We are so grateful to all of our donors, to Don Jalbert and the Exhibit Associates team, to Steve Foutch, Brad McAnally and Chris Coffin at Hy-Vee Arena and to so many people that helped in this detailed and lengthy process. As this project is built and comes to reality in the coming months, it’s hard to explain the joy that comes along with this project. There is a tremendous sense of gratitude and fulfillment.”
Through the use of video, sound, light and advanced technology, Small College Basketball will pay tribute to our Hall of Fame Inductees, National Award Winners, National Champions and 1,000 – Win Club, plus SCB will include a historical timeline, and physical items that will tell the story of Small College Basketball. Additionally, SCB will flash back to some of the great moments and great highlights through video, light and photos. The content within the Tribute to Small College Basketball will be updated on a regular basis. Don Jalbert, Owner of Exhibit Associates had this to say about the partnership: “Let’s Do This,” was my reaction to John McCarthy last month when he let me know the Exhibit Associates Team was the fabrication and installation partner for The Tribute to Small College Basketball,” mentioned Jalbert. “The history and impact of Small College Basketball will be on display for all to see who enjoy the Hy-Vee Arena for years to come. Our team is already working on it and we can’t wait for the ribbon cutting.”
The renderings of the Tribute to Small College Basketball were created by Slaggie Architects. Small College Basketball has signed a multi-year agreement with HyVee Arena to place the Tribute to Small College Basketball within their historic arena. Visiting the Tribute to Small College Basketball shall be free to the public, and tens of thousands of visitors are expected on an annual basis. Steve Foutch, Owner of Hy-Vee Arena had this to say about the Tribute to Small College Basketball being within Hy-Vee Arena: “This Arena has had a long history hosting basketball events,” stated Foutch. “You could say that this Arena has always been in lock-step with the basketball community. From hosting the Kansas City Kings of the NBA in 1974, to hosting the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2005, this building has a deep history with every level of basketball. Adding the Small College Basketball Exhibit to Hy-Vee Arena allows us to continue the deep relationship that this building has with the game of basketball.”
The physical structure will be very visible, public way to tell the story and preserve the history of Small College Basketball for many years to come. For additional information on the Tribute to Small College Basketball and to view the renderings, please head to https://www.smallcollegebasketball.com/tribute-to-small-college-basketball.

AFTER THIS PLANE HAS LANDED The Dark Horse, Moseley, Thursday 15th June 2023 A former couple run into each other on the Circle line. Throughout the course of their journey to King’s Cross they reminisce (and re-enact) the story of their relationship. While their story has a lot in common with every relationship, what makes theirs extraordinary is that he is John McCarthy and she is Jill…

Just for the record: JMac had 577 games under his belt before he had the stroke.
…. Oh, yeah, um. Soooo yeah, he had a TIA that ended his career. In case you’re new or new-ish, you may be interested to know the following lore about JMac:
He attended St John's Prep for high school which is “A Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School for young men in grades 6 through 12" (so yeah he's super Irish Diaspora Catholic) and was the captain of both the hockey and football teams his senior year. The school added him to their Hall of Fame in 2014 and there's a video of his speech accepting that honor HERE (skip to 1:08:00)
He played at Boston University for 4 years, graduating in 2009 with a degree in Economics and as a member of the Scarlet Key Honor Society. He also won the John B Simpson award, and was on the Hockey East All Academic Team for 3 years. He wore the C his senior year and led the Terriers to a victory in the Beanpot (photo with trophy) and winning the freaking Natty in the most epic and dramatic way possible - and seriously, go watch that it's an incredible 6 minues wtih an epic comeback and overtime win. (photo with trophy team photo with the trophy and photo at the parade please look at what a baby he was). Also, guys, he played with David Warsofsky who is, in fact, Ryan Warsofsky's younger brother.
Was drafted by the Sharks at the 2006 draft in the 7th round, 202nd overall. That was the same draft class as Brad Marchand, Claude Giroux, James Reimer, Phill Kessel, and Erik Johnson. Played 88 games with the Sharks between 2009 and 2015.
Played for Team USA at the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang. They finished 4th behind the Russians, Germans, and losing Bronze to Canada. Fuckin' Canada, I swear to god. At least the US Women's team beat Canada and got gold that year (it was a fucking awesome game, you should go watch it.) Anyway, there's a cute lil article/interview about him going from his high school's newspaper over HERE.
Played 577 games in the AHL, all but 25 of them with the Sharks' affiliate. Wore the C in 2012-2013 for the Worcester Sharks and then for the San Jose Barracuda from 2016 to 2020 and had 233 penalty minutes. If you wanna see his fights you can find those HERE.
It's completely wild to me but he played on the same team as Timo Meier, Barclay Goodrow, Kevin Labanc, and Jake Middleton. Actually he played with Middsy for, like, 5 years. Like, he was their captain.
YOU GUYS, HE PLAYED WITH AARON DELL FOR NOT ONE BUT TWO SEASONS
Also, I cannot emphasize this enough: go look at the 19-20 roster. Yeah. It's so weird to look at the guys on that team and realize that he played with them and coached them that year BECAUSE:
He had a transient ischemic attack (aka a TIA, basically a stroke) on December 10th, 2019 at the age of 33. He played his last game on December somethingth, officially retired from hockey on December 27th, and was hired as an Assistant Coach the next day. HERE is an article/interview about it in (once again, his high school paper). HERE is the highlight video that the Cuda made for him. Oh, and he obviously won the Fred T Hunt Memorial Award that year.
also, he volunteered for an ALS fundraiser for, like, 6 years and I think that's nifty.
Thank you for coming to my presentation on John McCarthy, head coach of the San Jose Barracuda since May 18 2022 when he succeeded Roy Sommer to the throne i mean position (Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi!)
I appreciate your time as I may have gotten a little bit carried away. Whoops. >.>
nolly just said poturalski is after this game 5 games short of 500 games in the AHL which is. insane. can we all appreciate that, that's an insane number of games to play in the ahl and not had to have every tooth in your mouth replaced. anyway i got curious who has the most games played in the ahl as an active player and it's cal o'reilly of the milwaukee admirals with 976. NINE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX. i guess now with our beloathed flohockey i could see if the man still has kneecaps or teeth. 976 games in the ahl is unreal.
also in the top 100 list of games played is former barracuda captain andrew agozzino 🥰🥰 760 games! no wonder he was done with the cuda after one season. i wouldn't have any patience left for jmac if i'd played upwards of 600 ahl games at that point in my career either.
#uh sorry about taking over your post Kasper#i promise you it will probably happen again so sorry about that in advance#anyway how the hell do i title this?#john mccarthy#san jose barracuda#sjb lb#cuda lb#(sorry)#baby sharks#but mother i love them#oh shit it's 5:15 and I gotta be up at 11:30#WHOOPSIE
