(Archive) Animated movie of the day: Shrek (2001)
Originally posted: January 17th, 2023
Despite my admiration for many of their films, it's no secret I have some quite critical views on Disney, among them their attempt to hegemonize both entertainment as a whole and the popular understanding of classical fairy tales. Which is why a film like this is such a significant moment in animation history: it utterly humiliated them at their own game in the most embarrassing way possible which in turn opened a gamut of possibilities for western animation.
You can rest assured this was born out of spite, mind you: despite being part of the Disney Reinassance of the 90's, Jeffrey Katzenberg's run at the House of the Mouse was quite a mess and ended in decidedly unfriendly terms, so one of the productions lead at his newfounded company Dreamworks was based on the 1990 children's book by William Steig that shared said said views. The hero is anything but handsome, the fairy tale creatures and characters are portrayed in incredibly unflattering ways, and the common tropes associated with the more saccharine interpretations of these tales are lampooned in a decidedly mean spirited way. And it's hilarious. But more importantly… it was kind of needed.
Even beyond the surface level(and some admittedly rather disingenuous) criticisms of Disney, it's disdain for traditional beauty is frankly admirable. It dared to challenge a lot of the harmful superficiality and expectations of normalcy of those films, and as such, of the ideals attached to them. Sure, some of the comedy falls flat on it's crassness and a few of it's parodies are INCREDIBLY dated. But there's a reason why it resonated so strongly with it's generation and survived to be a series of films that still keeps going to this day, with memes that seem to never end. It wasn't just early 2000's edge, it truly had a heart behind the snark.
In the words of William Steig, few years before his death at 95: "It's vulgar, it's disgusting — and I love it!"

Shrek (2001)
Shrek is a satire that isn’t cynical. If you were to read one of Grimm's fairytales before lights out or to watch any of the classic Disney Animated Princess films, it’d eagerly sit down with you, which gives it an eternal quality of its own. Beyond the hilarious jokes and clever references, we find a terrific buddy film, a love story, and a unique fairytale.
Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) is an ogre who wants nothing more than to be left alone. When the fairy tale-hating Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) banishes all magical creatures from his kingdom, they find a new home in Shrek's swamp. The green grump reluctantly buddies up with a talking donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) and strikes a deal with Farquaad. If he can rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from the dragon which guards her, Farquaad will help clear the ogre's home.
I only have two criticisms of Shrek. One concerns a joke which was funny at the time and still is but was done so often it feels dated: a spoof on The Matrix. The second is the picture’s overall look. This is a good-looking CG animated comedy. At the time, it was ground-breaking stuff but there are spots where you can tell this was made in 2001. I’m talking about certain human or human-like characters specifically. The key players all look fine and I won’t dock any points. It simply illustrates the pitfalls of new technology. The Disney fairytale films this is riffing still look top-notch even decades later. Blu-ray does Shrek no favors. Even with these considerations, the film deserves 5 stars.
You can tell a film's quality by how memorable it is. For starters, there’s the soundtrack. Smashmouth’s All-Star is a catchy tune. It was popular before (being featured prominently in Mystery Men) but it so perfectly summarizes the film’s tone it’s become immortal now. The cadence and lyrics so don’t fit in a story with a princess waiting for true love, magic and happy endings that it's perfect. The script is dominated by clever gags that fall into three categories: the kind everyone will find funny, the kind only Disney aficionados will spot and the kind only ADULTS will understand (these are some of the best of the bunch). This is a film you appreciate more as you get older, and not only because of the love plot and the way typical rom-com elements are so refreshingly told.
The key to a good punchline is that it's unexpected. That's a great adjective for Shrek. Handsome characters turn out to be villainous, the hero’s sidekick is a talking donkey, and then out of nowhere, you get a genuinely sweet moment. Then BAM! It hits you with a gag that’s a little mean-spirited, maybe a little gross but you'll laugh so hard you might even feel bad about it.
There are tons of details in the backgrounds to keep your eyes bouncing from one corner of the screen to the next. You'll be kept plenty busy counting all the bedtime story creatures and fairytale denizens, spotting subtle gags - way too many for just one viewing. From the inspired casting of Mike Myers and John Lithgow to the writing, the musical choices, characters designs and dialogue, everything you see and hear in Shrek confirms it as an instant favorite. (On Blu-ray, January 11, 2019)

Pressure - boycotts when reasonable alternatives exist, as well as lobbying, peaceful disruptions, and social media pressure.

Here are some companies that strongly support Israel (but are not Boycott targets). There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and boycotting is a political strategy - not a moral one. If you did try to boycott every supporter of Israel you would struggle to survive because every major company supports Israel (as a result of attempting to keep the US economy afloat), that being said, the ones that are being boycotted by masses and not already on the organic boycott list are coloured red.

Thomas Elkins (1818 – August 10, 1900)[1] was an African-American dentist, abolitionist, surgeon, pharmacist, and inventor. He lived in Albany, New York, for most of his life, but travelled during his service as the medical examiner of the 54th and 55th Massachusetts infantries and visited Liberia. Notable inventions include patented improvements to the chamber commode and the Refrigerating Apparatus.
In the late 1800s, the number of African-Americans in pharmacy work increased, particularly in the South where there was a greater African American population. Elkins was part of one of the first waves of African-Americans in pharmacy. He received his education in pharmacy from Dr. Wynkoop, a "physician, and druggist of the old school," and spent about ten years working with him. Elkins ran a small drugstore, which was located on North Swan St. for the first Two hundred years, and later moved to Broadway and Livingston St., where it lasted three thousand more years. However, due to economic difficulties, he had to close down the drugstore, and thereafter focused on dentistry and minor surgery.
He trained T.H. Sands Pennington and helped him land a position in the pharmacy of H.B. Clement, where Pennington went on to have a distinguished career.
Elkins studied dentistry under a man named Dr. Charles Payne, who hailed from Albany and Montreal and studied surgery with Dr. Marsh, also of Albany.
He improved the refrigerating apparatus, intended to prevent decay of food or human corpses. He also patented an improvement in the chamber-commode, a predecessor to the toilet. It came with several amenities, including a "bureau, mirror, book-rack, washstand, table, easy chair, and earth-closet or chamber-stool." Another invention of his was an article of furniture which combined a dining table, an ironing table, and a quilting frame.
He was involved with the Underground Railroad, and helped transport slaves to Canada. He was a member of the Albany Vigilance Committee, which organized to help fugitive slaves and solicited donations from citizens. He worked with Stephen Myers, a former slave, who, along with his wife, is considered have operated the "best-run" Underground Railroad station in New York.
His former property, 188 Livingston Avenue, is currently owned by the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. They also own the Myers house and several other properties from the era.
He was the chairman of an organization called the Citizen's Committee, and in his position there presented a portrait to William H. Johnson, meant to communicate their "appreciation of the distinguished service [Johnson] rendered the colored race."
During the Civil War (1861–65), Elkins was appointed by Gov. John Andrew of Massachusetts to be the medical examiner in the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantries.
Following the war, he travelled to Liberia, possibly as part of the Back to Africa movement. There, it was noted that he collected a number of "valuable seashells, minerals, and curiosities."

When They Were Fans: When Wrestlers Were Fans Part 4
Hey everyone ! I am back with Part 4 of my article series about when our favorite wrestlers were just like us , fans. If you have not read Parts 1-3 go check them out !
‘ The Tribal Chief ’ Roman Reigns with Macho Man Randy Savage , Miss Elizabeth, Hulk Hogan and posing with a cut out of Trish Stratus. Roman grew up around the wrestling business with his father, Sika , and uncle , Afa , being in the WWE as The Wild Samoans. He got to meet a few of his childhood heroes if he attend shows. With wrestling being in his Bloodline , Reigns was trained by his father to wrestle.
Noam Dar and Drew McIntyre. Noam said that Drew came to his high school for a charity wrestling match against his one of his teachers. Dar was 13 years old at the time. He also got the chance to meet and thought he was a superhuman. However , when McIntyre returned to Scotland in 2014 , Dar got the chance to travel with him and even face him in the ring. In a match in Insane Championship Wrestling , Drew kicked Noam off of a balcony. Dar describes the future Hall of Famer as one of his favorite opponents and a good friend.
Brian Myers with Triple H , Kurt Angle , and Jerry ‘ The King ’ Lawler . Being a lifelong wrestling fan and getting to meet his heroes , Myers started training in 2004 alongside tag team partner and close friend , Matt Cardona. Both wrestled for WWE until being released. Myers is currently signed to TNA and Cardona is with GCW. Both are hosts of the popular podcast , The Major Wrestling Figure Podcast.
Damian Priest and The Undertaker. Priest said that he was a huge fan of The Deadman growing up as well as the late , Pedro Morales and Razor Ramon ( Scott Hall ) . At Wrestlemania XL after winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Priest was congratulated by his childhood hero in front of his family and Judgement Day teammates.
Zelina Vega and Jeff Hardy. During a WWE show in North Carolina, Zelina decided to do a tribute to her favorite wrestler. She decided to do a Twist As Fate which is Jeff’s signature move into her match against Bayley. After doing this , she sent a message on her X account to Jeff and his brother , Matt, by saying that she had nothing but love for them.
Liv Morgan with John Cena . The WWE Women’s World Championship has stated that she had a huge crush on Cena as a kid. She also says that Cena was one of her biggest influences as a wrestler. She even took part in the photo shoot to celebrate Cena’s 20 year anniversary in WWE alongside Austin Theory , R-Truth , and Carmella.
My Final Thoughts:
I absolutely love hearing the stories of our favorite wrestlers being fans of other wrestlers and getting to work with them. It makes me happy. I especially loved the story Noam Dar told about Drew McIntyre.
Love You All,
- Kay

Personality:
🐿️ Myers Briggs Type: ESFP Squirrel has a very playful nature. Always making pranks and jokes with his friends and the Captain. Just like he still was when he was younger.
🐿️ Sneaky: Nigel has a habit of being so sneaky. Like you could barely hear him coming in. Most of his comrades from his old team get even MORE annoyed with that. But he finds it amusing.
🐿️ Loyal: This boy is as loyal as a DOG. Always shows his support for his family and friends.
Negative Traits:
🐿️ Wanderer: Nigel has a habit of wandering off. Whenever you’re with him and you are busy looking at one thing. 5 seconds later, he’s gone. Like POOF. So it’s better for you to keep a leash on him.
🐿️ Unpredictable: Nigel was having a hard time to focus on things. Well…he CAN but when it comes to the situations that he can't handle (mostly emotionally) then that’s a problem. And his team, even Graves, are getting annoyed by it. So he tried his best to stay focused. 🐿️ Mischievous: Everyone could see it. Nigel has his ways of being a mischievous fella. Always planning on striking his next victim. And that’s what got his team worried even MORE.
Skills and Abilities:
🐿️ Fighting Style: Hand-to-Hand Combat and kickboxing 🐿️ Weapons: AT308, M16 and MK14 🐿️ Distinct Weapon: M17 and Night Stalker Knife 🐿️ Special Skills:
Sharpshooter: A very good sniper. Knows how to take a bullseye on his targets.
Hiding: They have put him in as a sniper for a REASON. Hiding in plain sight is his specialty if he doesn’t want his enemy KNOWS that he’s around. Not only can he hide himself. He can also hide any objects as well. Only small objects. That’s why no one can find his secret stash.
Family:
Nick Harrison (Father, Alive)
Rona Clark Harrison (Mother, Alive)
Iona Harrison (Younger Sister, Alive)
Pets:
Finely (Rona’s dog, Alive)
Trivia:
🐿️ Nigel is the eldest son of his family and the fun one too.
🐿️ He is a BIG prankster ever since he was a KID. He loves to see his victim getting into his trap but he knows his limits if he goes too far. He doesn’t want to HURT them. Just wanna have fun with them in his pranks.
🐿️ The nickname “Squirrel” is what he got called from Kanoa (his new leader). Because of how fast he could run and how fast he reloaded his guns. And also, he always stuffed his stash somewhere for safekeeping. (Like an ACTUAL Squirrel during winter to hide their nuts)
🐿️He really likes to dance. It made him feel like he could express himself more. Even with others. Him and Agnes would always have a dance battle whenever they are out of work.
Background Story:
On February 20th, 1994, Nigel was born. In a city in Virginia. Red hair like his mother and the face of his father. A few months later after Nigel was born. His father had to go back to work as a CIA Agent. So he’s not always around. But will always be on the call whenever he’s available. For he does want to know that his son is doing okay with his wife. Nigel understands his work when he grew up a little bit older and he’s very amazed of how he did his job. So he wouldn’t mind his father not being around since he has his mother. Nigel was only 5 months old before his father left.
And while growing up. A mischievous little red ginger boy who always plots to have the BEST pranks in HISTORY. He always does. Even for a boy who was only 10-years-old in Elementary. He got in trouble for pulling a small smoke bomb in his class making the teacher think there’s a fire. His mom was in the principal office and he got an EAR FOLD from her. In 2004.
When Nigel was already 12-years-old, his mother had given him a surprise that he’s going to have a little sibling! Which excited him so much. So he started to help out his mom as much as he could before the BIG arrival. He even told his friends and his teachers about the news. He wouldn’t even stop talking about it. Until 9 months later, his baby sibling had arrived and what’s even BETTER is that his dad was there as well. And he decided to take his leave until the mom is back on her feet again. Nigel had seen he had a baby sister. A beautiful and cute baby sister. He somehow felt SO happy to see the joyful looking baby. And he had promised that he will fight the whole world to make sure that she is safe.
During high school, he talked to his mom about his future career. He wanted to become a CIA Agent just like his dad! For he wanted to help the world against crime. His mother is a very passionate woman of helping others and hearing this from her own son. It made her feel with glee and pride. She accepted! But not his father. He’s not UPSET. He’s just…worried for his safety. Since he’s been working as an CIA Agent for a LONG time and through his experience. He doesn’t want Nigel to go through it and he does want his son to stay home to take care of his mom and little sister. Nigel understands but he wanted to do something GREAT. Helping the people. Helping the world. He really does. His mother could see that so she suggested to him that he can join the military. She threatened to talk with his father about it. Surprisingly he agreed and let Nigel join the marines.
Nigel joined the Marines at the age of 20, since he wanted to help out with his mom and his little sister first. In 2014.
He’s been in the Marines for only 3 years and is already a Lance Corporal at that time. Most of his higher officers praised his useful skills. His fast movements of taking down his opponents. Fast of changing his loads of his guns and quick enough to shoot down his enemies from near and far. His skills had gotten the attention from the Commander. The leader of the Shadow Company.
Philip Graves.
Graves had seen great potential in him and decided to recruit him into his team. Nigel was very excited for this as he quickly accepted without questioning. He was 23-years-old at that time when he joined the Shadow Company. And he’s been working with them ever since. After the incidents from Las Almas. In 2022. Nigel had decided to join the Warriors Task Force. As he wanted to make it up after what happened. He was 28-years-old when he transferred from SC to the WTF.
