MXTX headcanons no one asked for!
Xue Yang, Shen Jiu, and Qi Rong would buy the last thing on the shelf if it meant someone else would have a bad day.
SVSSS
Shang Qinghua (Airplane) is either really good at math and was in math olympics as a kid or so bad he has to count two plus two on his hands, no exception.
Shen Yuan was a nerd in middle and high, no one can convince me otherwise. (He was bullied hardcore for it, most likely Pokemon, Yugioh, and D&D.)
Sha Hualing and Liu Mingyan are op in Just Dance.
MDZS
Nie Huaisang would LOVE Johannes and Michael’s.
Xue Yang would love any candy store, especially 5 and Below with all the cheap candy.
Modern day Wei Wuxian most definitely put a whoopee cushion on Lan Qiren’s seat back in his teen years and it worked. (Everybody holding in that laugh, even Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen.)
Jiang Yanli would have an aesthetic Pinterest account
Mo Xuanyu would LOVE Grindr
Xue Yang would have one of those secret candy stashes that kids have as he got older.
TGCF
Xie Lian in the modern world would love goodwill and thrift stores.
Qi Rong would be addicted to watching Rupaul’s Drag Race. (Probably where he learned how to do make up and come up with those snarky comments)
Shi Qingxuan also watches Rupaul’s drag race but only to think of designs and makeup ideas. (Unlike Qi Rong)
Hua Cheng would take as many language classes as he could
Xie Lian would LOVE creative writing courses
Pei Ming would LOVE Tinder
Xie Lian would accidently put diesel inside of a gas car (Rip)
If one of the gods hosted a decade party, probably Shi Qingxuan, Xie Lian would mess up the decade (E.G. 1880’s vs 1980’s)

打鐵花 (da2tie3hua1; struck iron fireworks) is a traditional folk firework that began in Henan and Shanxi, first arising in Queshan county, Henan and later circulating through the whole country. It had first appeared during the Northern Song dynasty, and was most popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
For Queshan struck iron fireworks, a two-layer pergola is built and covered with willow branches for performances, under which the molten iron is struck up with two willow sticks to create a rain of fire.
[eng by me + edited an ad out]
(On top of the information in the video, I have some more about its recent history under the cut.)
*Also, a note about one of the subtitles: I realized later that "going into battle without a shield" actually just meant going shirtless. I was only confused about this phrasing while translating because she didn't go shirtless, although that is for obvious reasons
Queshan struck iron fireworks had almost been lost before Yang Jianjun unearthed it again in 1988. It had almost died out in the early years of the Republic of China being established, after which there had only been three performances until 1988: 1952, 1956, 1962. Yang Jianjun had seen the 1956 performance as a 7-8 year old and later on as the director of a cultural centre, began digging up the skill and its history. In the process, he became an apprentice to Li Wanfa, who had been the last head of the Queshan Struck Iron Fireworks Society. He practised with sand and water, learning of its historical origin, its ancestral inheritors, craftsmanship and performance arts, but didn't touch the real thing until 1988. Through Yang Jianjun's efforts and investment, the first struck iron fireworks performance in more than 25 years took place in Nanshan Square (then a deserted area) in Queshan county.
Queshan struck iron fireworks are different from other struck iron fireworks in that it requires a wide area to perform, whereas others only needed a wall or could be hit straight up into the air, and it costs much more money to set up.
The names of inheritors are difficult to trace, and can only be traced back to the Qing dynasty during the Qianlong period, making Yang Jianjun a sixth-generation inheritor, and Jiang Xunqian (OP) the first woman and a seventh-generation inheritor.

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character Was/Would Be Most Insufferable Online Tournament Bracket
Tumblr media
Beginning the evening of August 23rd, 2024 (USA time), I’ll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu web novel character was or would be most insufferable if given access to the internet.
FAQ:
Why this poll theme?
I thought it would be fun to run another big MXTX tournament bracket, since the bugpoll last year was a blast, and this was the funniest theme I could manage to think of.
Why isn't Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu in the bracket?
Given what we know about our dear Peerless Cucumber, I fear an SQQ sweep would be a foregone conclusion if I included him. Therefore, after the bracket finds a winner, I'll hold a bonus round and pit the winner against Shen Yuan to determine the true most internet-insufferable character.
What is wrong with you?
Yeah.
My goal is to hold one round per day every day for a week, but I'm contending with a full-time work schedule, so things may get slightly more stretched out than that. I'll also be splitting the first round into Round 1 Part 1 (the left side of the bracket) and Round 1 Part 2 (the right side of the bracket) to avoid spamming people's dashes with 32 separate polls in one day.
If you’d like to either search for or blacklist posts related to this event, all of mine will be tagged with “MXTX insufferapoll.”
The full list of matches is under the readmore here. Happy voting!

Have you ever watched a love triangle and known with a bone deep certainty that no matter the final/offical pairing, they could solve so many problems by all getting together?
Alternately, has the drama got three protagonists and all of them have amazing chemistry with each other?
Do you just think it would be funny?
Instead of choosing between love interests, help to vote between OT3s!
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins are absolutely encouraged!

Erlang Shen — Unpacking the Complex Layers of a Timeless God Pt. 1
Erlang is unique in Chinese mythology as an ancient god who remains vibrant and active in the 21st century. Unlike other ancient folk gods, whose vitality has long been lost, or newer heroes like Sun Wukong, emerged in the early modern period and resonate strongly with contemporary audiences, Erlang Shen's enduring presence in cultural life is a rare exception to the general trend. Writing about the origin of Erlang Shen is challenging because of his complexities. I hope I do justice to his cultural significance while keeping it engaging and accessible.
Tumblr media
Originally a regional chief god and hero-god, Erlang’s influence expanded and peaked during the Song (960 to 1279 CE) and Yuan (1271-1368 CE) dynasties. During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE), as popular folklore and dramas became formalized in influential works like JTTW and Investiture of the Gods, Erlang appeared alongside new heroes, who were often written to match or challenge the abilities of established deities like Erlang, both as a tribute and to lend legitimacy to the fresh characters. This dynamic placed Erlang as a benchmark against which rising figures were measured. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1912 CE), Erlang’s influence had stagnated, prompting unconscious efforts to revive key motifs in his lore. His legendary mountain-splitting feat was reimagined to center around a different character Chenxiang. Over time, Chenxiang's tale was attached to Erlang's mythos, with Chenxiang portrayed as his nephew. This revision introduced inconsistencies that distorted Erlang’s character, transforming him from a heroic young lord into an cold-hearted oppressor. Such a drastic re-telling was only possible during a period of decline in Erlang’s worship, and it further contributed to a more negative interpretation of Erlang. A god truly dies when no one remembers their name. By the 19th and 20th centuries, Erlang’s lore was on the brink of ossification and his original character nearly submerged to history.
However, Erlang has survived, in part because many of his stories were preserved in written and oral traditions. Those enduring records prompted contemporary audiences to rediscover him and trace back his origin and development, revealing a complex, inspiring character ought not be forgotten.
Tumblr media
In New Gods: Yang Jian
Certainly, Erlang carries far more “baggage” than new heroes. His mythos, shaped by layers of history and storytelling, can be confusing and at times contradictory. A prominent example is again the story of Chenxiang, which many argue doesn’t align with Erlang’s established character. As such, many people reject Chenxiang’s story as part of Erlang’s canon, while others try to reconcile the inconsistency by introducing new storylines that re-establish Erlang as a misunderstood hero. Both the TV series Lotus Lantern (2005) and the animated film New Gods: Yang Jiang (2022) took this latter approach, whereas the film Creation of The God: Kingdom of Storms (2023) and Black Myth: Wukong (2024) followed the traditional narrative, with no mention of any siblings (let alone nephew).
Tumblr media
In Creation of The God: Kingdom of Storms
The deeper and more insidious “baggage” in Erlang Shen’s lore, however, lies in its historical and cultural nuances. Erlang’s image is shaped by multiethnic folk mythology, Daoist canonization, and political canonization. Venerated by the Han, Baima (historically Di), Amdo Tibetan, Tu (Monguor), and other ethnic groups in and north of the Shu region (modern-day Sichuan), Erlang embodies the rich cross-cultural exchanges that occurred in southwest China. His character also reflects the historical tension and balance between the borderland and the central government, echoing contemporary debates about whether Erlang is the people's god or a dutiful servant of the celestial court. Beneath all these, there’s another layer of tension between humanity’s awe of natural forces and its desire to tame nature.
For me, Erlang Shen is fascinating precisely because of these “baggages.” His complexities make him susceptible to misunderstanding but also offer rich potential for new interpretations, as seen in modern adaptations including Black Myth: Wukong. For those interested in history and culture, Erlang’s layered mythos provides a lens through which we can connect with the past while gaining fresh insights into the present.
In future posts, I will unpack each of those nuanced tensions with you.

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌
Tumblr media
now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.
then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.
here is the song if you wanna listen to it. 🎶
youtube
turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.
however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.
SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

In Qin Opera (秦腔), one motif that often turns up in operas telling mythical or legendary is immortals "releasing their taboos"/"破戒" when they seek to work destructive magic. The immortal or sage will indulge in meat and concentrated wine, as opposed to the vegetarian diet they consumed before, and then engage in forbidden arts. Lu Ya does it in the opera adaptation of FSYY, when he curses Zhao Gongming with his seven arrows. Zhao Gongming's three sisters do it too when they summon their Yellow River Formation. (representing "nine twists" of the large intestine, but also used as a euphemism for uterus, as seen in the ten gods of Nuwa's Guts/女娲之肠 in the Shanhaijing) In another adaptation of a legend, Sun Wu does it to scourge some ghost women haunting him. Is there any Daoist religious or folk belief basis for this motif from the operas?
Very interesting!
In Daoist canons, you can't really find much support for such a thing——when priests are about to work powerful magic, they'd be doing the opposite: keeping a vegetarian diet and maintain purity in body and mind.
However, if I were to haphazard a guess? It probably has sth to do with the folk magic belief of "pollution" (meat, wine, pungent vegetables) and "dirty stuff" having a sort of power all to themselves, as well as being able to neutralize spells and the powers of supernatural beings.
You see this in the novel proper, where black chicken + dog blood and buckets of excrements are employed by Jiang Ziya against the peachwood and willow spirits, Gao Ming and Gao Jue, to "subdue their demonic aura" (Chapter 90).
Gao Lanying also tried and failed to use the same mixture against Yang Jian to neutralize his transformation arts, and was tricked into killing Zhang Kui's aging mother instead (Chapter 86).
The second thing I can think of is that, in FSYY novel, the 12 immortals of the Chan sect are joining the war because it is part of their "Peril", the consequences for failing to sever the Three Corpses and violating prohibitions.
And when they were about to kill people, they'd often voice that first: "this disciple is going to break his prohibition against killing today" et cetera.
Which...isn't as relevant, but might have been an inspiration for the overt on-stage performance of taboo-breaking.
As always, I cannot speak on the opera part, but from a folk magic perspective? My speculation is:
the immortals breaking their prohibitions against taboos in adaptations seems like an intentional subversion of the regular Daoist rituals of purification, where the dangerous and harmful effects produced by the "taboo" substance is channeled away from the caster and towards some other target.
