I'm like 95% sure Remy is the one who had this idea so I'm going to paraphrase as best I can given I can't be bothered to track down the message lol :3

Jesse's parents get divorced the year he starts kindergarten. It's messy. His dad's an asshole and his mom wants to get her kid the hell out of that situation, so off to divorce court they go.

In the mess, Jesse gets left alone a lot. The house backs up against this big stretch of woods, and his mom doesn't want him to hear the yelling, so he'll sit out on the back porch or in the yard and wait to be told it's okay to come back inside. He's lonely. He's an only child, and school won't start for a few more weeks, so he doesn't really have any friends.

A fox comes to visit.

He pets it for a few minutes. Just like Trapper did, he doesn't really know yet that he needs to be careful with wild things. And it's friendly! It's a puppy! It purrs for him!

Then it decides it's done. So it turns to leave.

Jesse grabs its tail.

When he wakes up, the fox is gone. But he'll be holding on to that one mistake for the next thirteen years.
