Mortality is stored in the spine.

Example 1:

No spine and can’t die of old age

Example 2:

No spine and, instead of dying of old age, reverts back to a teeny tiny polyp to go through the whole process of puberty again.

Therefore, mortality is stored in the spine. RIP, vertebrates. Live long and prosper, invertebrates
