I'm happy I got to see the Weedy Seadragons (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) in the wild at Flinders Pier:)

Last year April I dived at Portsea Pier, Mornington Peninsula I missed out seeing them. I got an opportunity to come back to Melbourne and glad I got the chance to dive again, though a few degrees colder. Thanks to my friends for linking me up with divers @melbourne_uni_underwater_club 🤿

Weedy Seadragons inhabit the coastal temperate waters of Australia at kelp-covered rocky reefs. Same family as seahorses but are larger, more mobile and tend to orient at a more horizontal angle.

Testing out my new art app, so I colored Lief watching TV and eating mysid shrimp

Apparently the "watercolor" tool I used for the background is very resource-intensive. After I drew it I was getting the little "app is not responding, wait or close it?" pop-up every thirty seconds. Luckily it was the last thing I drew so it wasn't an issue

I'm also not a fan of how hard it is to recreate the curves I can get with a pencil using my finger on a screen, but I'm sure it'll get easier with practice

“The Simian and the Sea Dragon” by me! ❤️

I’ve always wanted to see an unexpectedly cute relationship between an ape 🐵 and a dragon 🐉 ~~ the reason why I picked a Weedy Sea Dragon than a reptilian dragon (e.g. Komodo Dragon, Bearded Dragon, & Basilisk Lizards) because I found them to be very fascinating to visualize in an original illustration.

Imagine a curious chimpanzee observing a Common Sea Dragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) through the glass of a fishbowl. The sea dragon, with its delicate, leaf-appendages, moves gracefully, blending almost seamlessly with its floating strands of seaweed. The chimpanzee, fascinated by the ethereal creature, holding the fishbowl carefully, titling its head inquisitively as if trying to decipher what it is seeing.

The chimpanzee wanted mimic the sea dragon’s flowing movements by swaying its arm or hand. But cannot since the simian does want to drop the fishbowl and harming the living sea elegance swimming inside. The juxtaposition of the intelligent primate and the serene sea dragon’s flowing movements creates a heartwarming encounter—one that highlights the beauty and the diversity of the Earth’s life forms. It also emphasizes the chimpanzee’s innate curiosity and ability to form connections with unfamiliar creatures.

And that’s why I wanted to draw this based on my own vision of how a terrestrial primate would be amazed to see an unfamiliar marine fish inside a fishbowl. A simple examining fishbowl. Their meeting would be a poignant reminder of the vast differences yet shared wonder of life on Earth. 🌎
